This is the place where I intend to store any Continental tyres orphaned content. Consequently, I’m allowing any of my readers to visit the post if they so choose. Of course, Continental is one of the world’s leading tire companies, making great tire products. Especially for cars, vans, and most other vehicle types that drive about the planet.

Here at Pellon Tyre and Autocentre in Halifax, we have been supplying and fitting tyres for many years, and Continental has always been one of those names that customers recognise and trust.
Over the years I have seen the tyre trade change enormously. Tyres have developed from relatively simple products into highly technical parts of the modern motor car. Better compounds, stronger construction, improved wet-weather grip, lower rolling resistance and increasingly sophisticated tread patterns have all helped make today’s tyres safer and more efficient.
Continental has played a major part in that development.
Continental Tyres – A Long History
Continental’s history goes all the way back to 1871, when the company was founded in Hanover, Germany.
Interestingly, tyres weren’t the company’s only products in those early days. Continental manufactured various rubber products before moving increasingly into tyres as cycling and motor transport developed.
The company started producing pneumatic bicycle tyres in 1892 and automobile pneumatic tyres in 1898.
One particularly important development came in the early years of motoring when Continental developed a car tyre with a patterned tread. It seems completely normal to us today, but early motor tyres could have very simple, smooth surfaces.
Adding a tread pattern helped improve traction and eventually became fundamental to tyre design.
Of course, tyres have come an incredibly long way since then.

Continental has become one of the best-known premium tyre manufacturers in Britain.

This has become even more important with hybrid and electric cars.
Electric vehicles can be heavy because of their battery packs and can deliver their power very quickly. Choosing the correct tyre specification is therefore extremely important.
The days when a tyre was simply a round piece of rubber are long gone!
Continental has been involved in tyre development for well over a century, including advances in tread design, compounds, winter tyres and tyre-monitoring technology.

Uniroyal is another famous tyre name that we have known for many years in the UK tyre trade.
There is also an important connection between Continental and Uniroyal. In 1979 Continental acquired Uniroyal’s European tyre operations.
Uniroyal became particularly well known for tyres designed with wet-weather performance in mind, which made the brand particularly relevant to motorists here in Britain.
The famous Uniroyal umbrella branding became closely associated with rain tyres.
And let’s face it – a tyre designed with wet roads in mind is hardly going to be out of place here in Yorkshire!
We can have glorious summer weather one minute and pouring rain the next.
Choosing the Correct Tyres
One thing I have always tried to explain to customers is that there isn’t necessarily one perfect tyre for everybody.
It depends on the car, the mileage you cover, where you drive and what you expect from your tyres.
Some motorists cover thousands of motorway miles every year. Others mainly make short journeys around Halifax and the surrounding towns.
Then we have customers who regularly travel over the hills and higher ground around Calderdale, where winter conditions can be very different from those experienced in flatter parts of the country.
This is why we always prefer to look at what the customer actually needs rather than simply trying to sell the most expensive tyre.

Even a premium tyre such as a Continental can only perform properly when it is looked after.
Correct tyre pressures are particularly important.
Running tyres under-inflated can affect handling, increase tyre wear and increase rolling resistance. Over-inflation can also affect the way the tyre contacts the road.
We therefore recommend checking your tyre pressures regularly and keeping an eye on tread depth and general tyre condition.
Look for cracking, cuts, bulges or unusual wear across the tread.
Uneven tyre wear can sometimes indicate another problem with the vehicle, such as wheel alignment or worn suspension components.

Although this page originally brought together some of our older Continental and Uniroyal tyre articles, I thought it was worth giving customers some useful information about these two long-established tyre names.
The tyre trade has been a massive part of my working life, and brands such as Continental have been around throughout much of it.
Technology may have changed, cars have certainly changed, and we now have electric and hybrid vehicles arriving in our Halifax workshop alongside conventional petrol and diesel cars.
