The compound on the Dunlop tyres, is generated from computers to provide the tyres with tread pattern with, high-void all-terrain pattern with interlocking tread blocks. This is also backed by placing the sipes in a way that rejects and throws out pieces of grit and gravel. At one time tyres with many sipes would also be noisy when driving on normal tarmac roads. The Dunlop tyres, with all their siping can now run much quieter, on normal tarmac roads, due to the computer design.

This is what can happen if you have the wrong tyres fitted?

So, it can make a hell of a lot of difference. Fitting the tyres with a different compound to you fellow competitors. As proved in the race described in the article.

In this instance they were using Dunlop rally tyres. But any make would have done the same. The tyres they were racing on had too softer compound. Thus, giving these cars a disadvantage over the cars with a harder compound.

Dunlop Rally Tyres just part of the large range of motorsport products

My interest in Dunlop rally tyresstems back to when I visited the Dunlop Competition Tyres section at Fort Dunlop in Birmingham UK. I must admit that I was most impressed with the

dunlop rally tyres

large range and variety of racing tyres, that were produced and the giant trucks that accompanied Dunlop to the race meetings all over Europe.

Dunlop supplies the tyres for all types of cars, from the single seaters to fast GT cars. I was surprised to learn that Dunlop even produced tyre for specific circuits and not just for specific cars. Like other tyre companies Dunlop racing tyre division provides the data and the research and development that will eventually be used in their road tyres to benefit the general public.

Circuits like Le Mans in South West France

Play a big part in the development of the Dunlop tyres, where the 24 hour races have to be competitive using the tyres with the most durability and lighter tyres with less rolling resistance. These qualities are what are required in the Dunlop high performance road tyres, such as perhaps the Dunlop SportsMaxx RT road tyre. These tyres have a large outer shoulder block for increased stability and handling when hard cornering. The SportsMaxx also has a compound that was a spin off from the motorsport scene, to give the road tyre improved grip and a better braking performance.

Dunlop rally tyres

So, are made with the same expertise as the rest of the Dunlop tyre products and their results and performance put in the know how. Off course, helping to develop a better production car tyre. Consequently, Dunlop is an old hand at this and that is the reason why new comers such as Kumho tyres have learned the importance of the race circuit when it comes to

dunlop rally tyres

developing tyres. A season racing can aid developments and improvements that could normally take years.

Dunlop use four types of rally tyres 1= DZ86R/RW A multipurpose gravel tyre that has a directional pattern with left and right handed options offers excellent traction and lateral grip in all conditions.

2= SP85 Gravel rally tyres providing excellent traction and braking in all conditions

3= SP61 Gravel rally tyres. An open patterned tyre, giving far better traction, on slippery, wet and muddy stages.

4= SP82 Gravel rally tyres. A closed pattern tyre, used for optimised grip and traction on dry hard stages.

Dunlop rally tyres also make a product for use on the tarmac stages of a rally called the

CR311 a moulded pattern for tarmac rallying available in various compounds for all conditions. These Tarmac Rally Tyres can be cut to either intermediate or wet patterns.

Finally,  Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre offer car and van servicing and repairs to all makes of vehicles.

Dunlop Tyres Declining-A Brief History of one of the tyre companies that I worked for !

Dunlop Tyres Declining

Dunlop Tyres

Bicycles the first for Dunlop

So, In the days of Queen Victoria! Britain was going full steam ahead in the industrialized nation that we had become. Inventions were arising thick and fast.

In the year of 1889 cam a patent from John B Dunlop. His company was founded in Dublin. Subsequently, was called the Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Co Ltd. Dunlops company manufactures his very own patent! Called the Pneumatic tyre. Importantly, in those days just for the bicycle.Dunlop Tyres Declining

So, the bike was getting very popular in those days. Well informed people were starting to form clubs for racing. Strikingly, a famous racer in those days was called Willie Hume .Winning seven races on the new Dunlop tyres. Word soon spread, and full production started in 1890 in Belfast Northern Ireland.

Dunlop were able to open up similar businesses in Europe and North America and opened a factory in Australia. They then began having financial difficulties and indeed had to sell off the overseas operations. Furthermore, to this day The company had to split and in Australia they have been a separate company, both making different brands using the same name.

Dunlop UK then opened a large factory in Birmingham the UK. In a short time they started the production of car tyres. Importantly, the Birmingham plant became known as “Fort Dunlop” . Of course, a very famous part of the Birmingham Brummy landscape. I visited the fort many times in the past! Importantly, I was always made to feel very welcome. Consequently, they became a very rich company. Having had Worldwide operations in distribution. Manufacturing included owning their rubber plantations in Ceylon and Malaya.

In the 1930s Dunlop  went into making other products

In the 1930s Dunlop Began diversifying into other rubber products, these were latex, golf balls, and other sporting equipment. They also started making rubber boots and “O” rings. In 1950 they then started making and supplying tyres for Formula 1 cars.

In 1971 Dunlop merged with Italian tyre giants Pirelli to form the biggest companies in the world. By 1984 they once again started with financial difficulties and the company was sold to Sumitomo Rubber Industries of Japan. The tyre brand name was split up over three groups and also all the other products that Dunlop made such as sports goods were sold off to various other companies. That just about brings us up to date,  Dunlop and Goodyear now trade under the same brand names with the same parent company and made in different factories around the World.

Moving forward to 2019 ! Dunlop tyres are in decline. In my opinion Dunlop are certainly not the force they once were. Of course like anything else new tyre companies have moved ahead. Stealing the older tyre companies business with new ideas an enthusiasm. Of course , I am a keen follower of the Dunlop brand and in fact sell many Dunlop Tyres from my Halifax retail depot.

Dunlop sports maxx tyres are a result of Dunlops tyre development in the field of motorsport. racing sliks for his racing car (i think it was F2 racing but I am not sure). Paul was the wealthy son of a Company that made building breeze blocks out of waste from the local coal fired power station (now pulled down).

In those days I worked for the local National tyres in Dewsbury West Yorkshire UK, and I was chosen to go to the  sports division in Birmingham the West Midlands. This was in pre-motorway days and the journey would have been about four hours. We did not have sat-navs then but I finally found the giant  tyre factory. In those days we did not ever travel far away from our small tyre depot, so I was very excited. The guys at the factory were very helpful and showed me round the racing division, the rally tyres and the F1 tyres and of course the ones that I had to collect were loaded onto my van and off I went back North, a great day out.

The  factory was now becoming old and was systemically dismantled over the coming years and the tyres were made in other parts of the World, only the racing division remained.

Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres-A tyre for the sporting car and driving enthusiast

Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres

Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres; launch a new bread of “sports TYRES”

Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres

Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres; Dunlop tyres vintage sign

This new tyre from Dunlop tyres has been specially designed. Hence, for the “driving enthusiast”. Dunlop has had a long heritage and standing in the field of motor sports. This new tyre is no exception. The new tyre. Naturally, has been developed to give much-improved road holding. Especially, for the driver who likes to live close to the edge. Therefore, with much-improved road holding due to the addition of racing technology.Plus, 120 years of racing experience built into the new Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres

This tyre gives much-improved grip. As a result, in both wet and dry road surfaces. This is due to the increased contact area of the road. Because of the tyres huge outer shoulder block area. The new Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres. Also, boasts two large centre grooves. So, that enable the tyres to dissipate water quickly. Thus, and resist aquaplaning. Keeping the tyre firmly in touch with the road surface in very wet weather. The water is pushed away from the centre grooves via through a set of lateral grooves and away from the tyre.

This new tyre is clearly aimed at the “Ultra High Performance” (UHP) tyre market. The new tyre will be available in 17 and 18-inch tyre sizes and will cater for high-performance car brands such as Audi, Mercedes, Porsche, BMW and Maserati’s. The new Dunlop tyres will also be available for the BMW Mini and jaguars.

Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres also introduce the Sports Maxx RT (Race Tyre)

This new tyre has been designed to be used by the Worlds fastest cars to perform on and off the race track. This new race tyre gives the same quality as the Sports Maxx road tyre but with added compounds used in the development of Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres racing division. This tyre is clearly going to be a winner after the thousands of hours that the Dunlop development team have worked on this project. This is the difference that I always talk about when explaining the difference between cheap tyres and the leading tyre companies, research and development costs a lot of money, this is why companies such as Dunlop tyres are able to command best prices for Dunlop tyres online at Pellon tyres Halifax

Car Tyres Days Gone Bye -Michelin-Dunlop and Goodyear were the Market Leaders in the 1960’s

 Post Updated 22nd Dec 2013/22nd march 2016

Car Tyres Days Gone Bye-My car tyres beginnings

Car Tyres Days Gone Bye-My very first job in the auto trade was as an apprentice mechanic in a small Yorkshire garage. I only spent four years there and after having an argument with my boss we decided to part companies. The best thing to come out of my old job was the fact that I became interested in tyres. Very strange you may think but that’s the truth. I had to repair all the punctures  and fit new ones using a tyre lever, a very difficult thing to do, until I got the knack of it.

Most punctures in those days were to tyre inner tubes. Most  in those days were fitted with tubes and were used right up to the tyre becoming completely bald and beyond. There were no laws in my early days this would come later on in my career.

I was now at home under my mother’s feet looking for, a new job. To my surprise, a vacancy for a  fitter appeared in the local paper. My mother rushed me off to the Briggs Auto-centre centre, within minutes of the advertisement appearing. The then manager a guy called Brian interviewed me and was very impressed that I could take off car wheels and fit and repair them by hand using tyre levers.

I received a polite letter saying that I had got the job. My mother was more pleased than me, because I would be no longer under her feet and she would have my weekly board money coming in again. I started work the week after and soon got settled into the job. I truly loved my new job and settled into my new role as a fitter.

This was to be the begging of my lifetime love for the  industry and was to set me up to run my own business in years to come.

The company was called The Tyre House , a local company soon to be bought out by the ever-expanding Dunlop retail outlet called Brigg’ s. Briggs were a group of  companies and were soon to merge with another group called Marshams , this was later to become National  a wholly owned company of Dunlop .

In those days, the major manufacturers were hell bent on buying out any  distributor to consolidate their share of the market. This was due to the ever increasing market

place as cars were becoming affordable to more and more people as jobs became more plentiful. Therefore, more people needed tyres,

Car Tyres Days Gone Bye-The first car tyres law came out

and I was promoted to office manager for my enthusiasm and it was beginning to get easier promotions in a large company such as Dunlop made at the famous Fort Dunlop tyre factory in Birmingham UK. I eventually left National Tyres and moved to Goodyear owned company in Leeds to try my hand with giant earth mover tyres, but will never forget the friends I met some of whom were friends for life and my first job in the tyre industry.

Car Tyres Days Gone Bye

Car Tyres Days Gone Bye-sort of cars from the 60s

Dunlop Tyres-One the founder and therefore earliest tyre companies and still a great tyre company.

Dunlop Tyres

John Boyd Dunlop invents the pneumatic tyre for Dunlop tyres

It was back in 1888 in Scotland. Thus, when the pneumatic tyres were invented by John Boyd Dunlop. Yet, another great British invention. He was working on his son’s bicycle at the time. Hence,he came up an inflated rubber tube filled with air. Of course,it was fitted around a metal rim for comfort. Hence, the rubber tyre was born. This invention paved the way for the future of the great company we now know as Dunlop tyres.

In 1985 Dunlop were bought by BTR plc and later a Japanese company Sumitomo were given the rights to make tyres under the Dunlop tyres road brand, it then started producing tyres in its UK subsidiary under the Dunlop Tyres Ltd name.

In 1999, the Sumitomo group began talks with Goodyear tyres and Goodyear bought a 75% stake in the company. Sumitomo carried on making Dunlop products in Japan and Goodyear made Dunlop in North America.

Dunlop Tyres

In 2006, The new Goodyear/Dunlop tyres company stopped making tyres here in the UK. Motorsport tyres are still produced out of Fort Dunlop in BirminghamDunlop Tyres UK, turning out about 300,000 specialist tyres a year.

Fort Dunlop can still be seen from the M6 motorway as you travel through Birmingham but it is a shadow of its former self, joining in with the rest of the decline of British manufacturing in the UK, very sad, I have had many visits to the old tyre factory in its former glory days but now the tyres are produced in China, Poland and Slovenia, not a British product anymore.

Goodyear Dunlop tyres also own two smaller tyre companies,

Fulda and Sava both brands that we used to sell in past and are good quality tyres. Goodyear tyres now operate from offices in Luxembourg and Brussels, who report to the main head office which is still in Akron USA.

DUNLOP VINTAGE TYRES- fitted to this great “vintage LANCHESTER”

This car was originally owned by a family of mill owners.Hence, from the Halifax area of West Yorkshire. The car was bought for the Lady of the house. For this reason, was restored by a West Yorkshire restoration company.Run by the owner and his son John Horsfield http://www.horsfieldsofhalifax.co.uk/projects.htm. The company carry out fantastic restoration jobs. Hence, as well as running a wedding car business.

This short article. Shows the diversity of cars that are booked in for servicing and MOT testing. Accordingly, at  Pellon Autocentre. We would like to thank the owners of these cars.Of course, for trusting them with such valuable cars into their care.

The “LANCHESTER” was designed by Mr George Lanchester. Who created an upmarket version of the” BSA ten” from around 1933. They also developed a model of car known as theRoadrider”. Before the beginning of the second World War. Lanchester was later bought out by “BSA”. Hence, the owners of Daimler and the Lanchesters were made to take second place to the new Daimler models. Sadly in 1956. Because the last model of the Lanchester known as the sprite was phased out.

The original holding company were facing financial difficulties. The bank called in the companies overdraft. Thus, calling for an immediate seizure of the companies assets. Lanchester cars were then produced at the BSA factory in Sparkbrook a (suburb of Birmingham), and because of this deal was struck to sell the Lanchester business to “BSA”. A deal was made in 1931 and Lanchester cars were bought out by BSA for £26,000 a significant amount of money in those days.

Lanchester was now the same company as Daimler and production were transferred to their factory at Radford.

DUNLOP VINTAGE TYRES

The DUNLOP VINTAGE TYRES were also followed by Avon tyres the “Avon Turbospeed tyres” and also Michelin tyres appeared on the market.

Hi, I would like to introduce myself. I have worked in the Garage and tyre, and I am MD for online battery company www.batteriesontheweb.co.uk. I have worked for a couple of national tyre companies in my younger days. Consequently, I now own a garage and MOT testing centre, here in the UK called Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre. A keen blogger about anything to do with cars and their related products that will help my business. Thus we are members of Point-S and Motor-Codes and are also a Unipart Car Care Centre and of course Tyre-safe.

Dunlop Motorsport Tyres-Are they second to Pirelli tyres in the motorsport scene?

Dunlop Motorsport Tyres

Dunlop Motorsport Tyres; In my opinion, Dunlop tyres have taken second, or even third place when it comes to supplying tyres to the motorsport teams. This is true for most kinds of motorsport. The good news for Dunlop is that in recent days they have qualified for three sessions on the famous LeMans 24 Hour race.

Dunlop invented the Pneumatic tyre, way back in 1888. Since then the former British tyre company have been involved in many different types of motorsport racing. Indeed, their first win was also at the LeMans circuit. This was way back I 1924, (even before my time). LeMans is a good hunting ground for Dunlop Motorsport Tyres. This is the event that has seen them as number one tyre manufacturer.

Tyre fitted to race cars have won 35 races at LeMans. In fact, Dunlop Motorsport Tyres have been successful on cars in the LMP2 class of racing cars. The LMP2 cars have won on Dunlop tyres in 2011 and for every year up to 2015. Dunlop became the choice for the FIA World Endurance LMP2 Championships. Dunlop Motorsport TyresConsequently, they have also been winners at the Nurburgring 24 hour’s race series in Germany.

Dunlop Motorsport Tyres, also support the Touring Car races

Dunlop is also supporters of the British Touring Car Championships and the Australian V8 Supercar championship. These top-flight races are always televised and give the giant tyre company excellent TV advertising exposure. Sky television broadcasts live action from Australia, where the Dunlop tyres get maximum exposure.

Dunlop also supplies tyres for the Isle of Man TT race series. They are the Official tyre partners to the FIM Moto2 and Moto3 race series, also seen regularly on TV coverage.

This is just a small sample. They also cover small race meetings at a local level. My main question though must put Dunlop in third place compared to the amount of input that Michelin and Pirelli put into motorsport.
