Nokian Winter Tyres

Nokian Winter Tyres

The compound on the Nokian Winter Tyres, is generated from computers to provide the tyres with tread pattern with, high-void all-terrain pattern with interlocking tread blocks. This is also backed by placing the sipes in a way that rejects and throws out pieces of grit and gravel. At one time tyres with many sipes would also be noisy when driving on normal tarmac roads. The Nokian Winter Tyres, with all their siping can now run much quieter, on normal tarmac roads, due to the computer design.

Cologne Tyre Show 2018-German Hospitality a Great Success for Tyre Enthusiasts

Cologne Tyre Show 2018

Cologne Tyre Show 2018

Cologne Tyre Show 2018

As the owner of a Tyre Retail Store here in the UK, then I think it important to visit the occasional tyre show. Of course we do have them here in the UK every once in a while . So the problem in the past has been the size of the show. What I mean is that you can walk through the exhibits in the matter of a few hours?

Over the years since I have been in the tyre business, then things have changed. Albeit at a slow pace. The public probably dont know or dont care much about tyres, as long as the price is right. However when you are a part of the industry, then you have “rubber in your blood”. For this reason tyres are an everyday part of our lives. Importantly, tyre guys like to meat and chat with other tyre guys, and so tyre shows are a great place to visit.

Pretty boring to most of the public, but like many other industries, So, tyres  are an every day part of our lives. This leads up to the first time that I saw that the European tyre show would be in Cologne Germany . In previous years I have traveled to these shows with a colleagues in the tyre trade. This time though I asked my wife if she would like to go. Of course she loves travelling and said a resounding yes.

New to Germany-Cologne Tyre Show 2018

Although I have visited these giant shows in other parts of Germany. then this was a country that she had never visited. All our travel arrangements were done by a local company, Tivolitravel . Of course everything went well and our hotel was situated across from the “messe” where the show was held.

When we arrived the temperature was 30 degrees and very humid. This weather was to last over the whole four days of our visit ! Cologne itself was a wonderful and vibrant city. Consequently, I would recommend anyone to take a visit its a great place with bars restaurants and a good shopping centre (not for me though).

The show itself was massive! Tyre companies do hold back when it comes to showing off their products. As expected all the big tyre companies were there in force. The one that I was interested in was the “Nokian Tyres” stand. Because we are Nokian dealers for our area here in Halifax UK. Although not the biggest stand, Nokian had a very good presence, showing off their AA rated SUV tyres, the Sporty Nokian zLine SUV summer tyre

Michelle and I had a great time at the show, taking some pictures for my blog and future blogs. It was a good experience the weather, food, hotel and the show were all first class. Including the friendly German people.

Compulsory rubber winter tyres

As we have all experienced this winter has been pretty tough. Especially after the so called “beast of the east” bringing a standstill to most of the roads of the UK. Of course some drivers are sensible and fit winter tyres to their vehicles. I also fit winter tyres to my vehicles. believe me they are really good.

My Ford Transit Comfort is fitted with a set of Nokian winter tyres. Believe me when I say that I never got stuck once. They were truly marvelous ? In fact one Saturday night I had to take my son to his girlfriends house in Wakefield West Yorkshire. The journey normally takes about a half hour. On the way a blizzard hit us ten minutes into our journey.

The snow settled very quickly and vehicles began to get stuck.

Even on the main roads. The scene soon became gridlocked as the snow was blown on high winds. Thus making driving impossible.

Except for my van. I quickly diverted onto the small roads that were not as badly affected by the now deepening snow. The Nokian winter tyres were doing a sterling job. Not once did I get stuck as I took as many back roads as possible. I arrived in Wakefield an hour later. So,dropped my son off and headed back home.

Once  again the main roads were grid locked. One main road out of Wakefield was blocked by a jackknifed  double decker bus. I did just the same and headed home on the back roads without any problems. The winter tyres were perfect? I am sure that there are many similar stories with drivers that were glad that they fit winter tyres. They are a known safety feature and save lives.

From the 1st November 2012 it will be a legal requirement. Hence, for all new tyres to feature one of the new tyre labels as required by European Regulation No
1222/2009. The intention behind these labels. So, is to give customers more information about the performance of each tyre. It covers three areas –

  • wet braking, which gives you a guide to how safe the tyre is
  • rolling resistance, offering a guide to fuel consumption; and external noise.
  • The labels are very similar to those found on household appliances such as washing machines, and should be easy to understand.

The tyres will be graded by each manufacturer or importer (where tyres are coming in from outside the European Union.).

Of course, to a strict testing system, and each country will be responsible for ensuring that the testing is carried out to the correct standards. Tyre manufacturers have already begun this process, so how are the tyres tested for each aspect of the label?

These new tyre labels are likely to encourage consumers to put more thought into the tyres they purchase. Thus, and tyre manufacturers to put more effort into improving the performance of their product. In time this should improve the safety of our roads

  • by reducing stopping distances
  • reduce greenhouse gas emissions (by reducing fuel consumption)
  • reduce the noise that traffic produces.
  • Overall this should result in a definite improvement of our environment.

Consequently, the new EU tyre labelling regulations make things much clearer for the consumer.

Previously the only way to age a tyre or tell the age was on the tyre sidewall. Instead of just the technical information on the tyre side wall. So, the new label give more useful information on fuel efficiency, wet weather capability and the tyres external noise level. Which of course is worth teaching our customers about. So, simply put, an “A” rated tyre will stop a lot quicker in the wet than a G rated tyre.

When tyre labeling first came out then some of us were dubious about its real use. The system was set up as a self governing exercise. This meant that tyre companies could sort of mark up the grading to make the tyres better than they really were. Further on in time then I do think that tyre standards are improving. In fact some tyre manufacturers now make Double “A” tyres with a low noise level.

Nokians AA Rated Tyres

These include Dunlop and Goodyear, but to my surprise Nokian tyres now make an SUV tyre with an “AA” rating The new AA-rated Nokian e Line 2 summer tyre ensures reliable top performance under all weather conditions. The precise driving feel and optimal comfort.

This Would Damage Your Tyres

This could be Station Road in Mirfield Next !!!

This Would Damage Your Tyres

This story in evolving all over the UK. Perhaps not as big as this but potholes are appearing everywhere. One particular bad spot that I know of is Station Road in Mirfield, West Yorkshire UK. Also the roads are bad traveling along the motorways particularly the M62. The M62 is the trans-Pennine route linking Liverpool on the west coast with Hull on the east coast.

This is one of the busiest motorways in Europe. This winter has been very cold and snowy. Because of this the roads are now cracking and potholes are opening up all over the motorway. Particularly where there has been previous roadworks!!

Here at Pellon Tyres in Halifax, we have noticed an increase in the number of damaged tyres and wheels. Of course I blame this on drivers hitting snow and slush covered potholes. Because this sort of incident causes sidewall damage then the tyres need replacing. One tyre manufacturer who is making tyres with stronger sidewalls, is Nokian.

Nokian originated in Finland are invented the first ever winter tyre. Of course they are now world famous for their winter tyres. Nokian have now developed a summer tyre for the SUV market that includes “aramid” . Of course, aramid is an extremely tough fibre, used in bulletproof vests. Therefore, the tyre was developed to protect larger sized tyre fitted to SUV,s.

The tyres with aramid in in some of the E line and Z line summer tyre ranges. Incidentally the E line 2 tyre range is a AA tyre rating, which puts the tyre in the elite class tyre manufacturers. As the Nokian dealer in the area we at Pellon Tyres are proud to offer these excellent tyres to the motoring public.

Michelin Winter Van Tyres-Agilis CrossClimate van and light truck tyre for safe driving in all weather conditions

Michelin Winter Van Tyres

All of the vans in my small fleet are fitted with winter tyres. In fact we do not take them off. Winter tyres are excellent all the year round. Delivery vans get into all sorts of places when out delivering. Including off road situations such as fields and un-tarmaced country lanes. I know because I have been there?

One of the best winter van tyres is the Michelin winter van tyres. In fact we have customers who are solo couriers who swear by fitting Michelin winters all the time. One particular guy delivers to companies that provide agricultural shows with many extras . Including show pens and refreshment areas.

These tyres are perfect because he has to drive on grassy surfaces and would get stuck when using summer tyres. of course another advantage of Michelin van tyres is their longevity. Like most Michelin products he found that they lasted much longer than other brands of winter tyres. The guy would visits us about every two years for his new set of winter tyres fitting.

Recently we became Nokian tyre dealers and so I may ask him to try a set? but I very much doubt it. Michelin have proved to him just how good they are. Believe it or not he is not the only one. Some of our customers will only stay with one brand of tyre for all their driving lives?

Eric Roberts

Michelin has extended its highly-acclaimed CrossClimate range into the light truck and van market. The new Agilis CrossClimate is a summer tyre with a full winter capability, boasting safety in all weathers, high mileage, robustness, damage resistance and long lasting performance, equating to low total cost of ownership. Rigorous tests.

scenes like this will be common in the UK the first week of March 2018

Because of the so called “Beast of the East” then we were all caught out by the massive snow falls and cold temperature of the past week or so. In fact the whole of Europe was swept over by freezing “Siberian” air carried by easterly winds from Russia.

Scenes like this image were common place all across the British Isles. No one escaped it. I think we were caught out by the fact that in the last few winters we have had relatively little or no snow.

Before that we have had spells of cold weather including snow falls in the winter period.

So were drivers ready for the bad weather?

To be fair, many motorists do fit winter tyres in November. In fact we did have some really bad winters and so we at Pellon Tyres in Halifax UK, decided to start a winter tyre hotel. For those new to bad winters, this is where people store the set of tyres that they are not using.

In summer we store the winter tyres and in winter the summer tyres. The only charge we make is for the actual fitting and balancing of the tyres. This has worked very well and keeps our customer base very happy. Unfortunately, we have no more vacancies at the moment our winter tyre hotel is full to the rafters.

However we do sell loads of winter tyre products. Our latest growth area is the addition of Nokian tyres as one of our suppliers of winter tyres. Nokian are building up a UK network of tyre suppliers in the UK. Of course pellon Tyres are honoured to become one of the Nokian tyre centres. Nokian also do a excellent range of Summer tyres including the X line range of “Aramid” reinforced SUV summer tyres.

As a result this article goes through some of the other ideas to help drivers in difficult snowy conditions.

Pothole Tyre Damage Looks Imminent -Continued rise of pothole-related breakdowns is “concerning”, says RAC

Pothole Tyre Damage Looks Imminent

Pothole Tyre Damage Looks Imminent

Pothole Tyre Damage Looks Imminent

I have already noticed the huge increase in potholes as I drive about. Especially after all the snow and frost that we have been witnessing here in the UK. One particular road near from where I live has opened up as many as twenty large potholes  in the space of three weeks.

The potholes seam to appear where there has been recent road works. Hence, you can see in the image that the hole is on old road works tarmac. In my opinion then local counsels should look more carefully how the roads are repaired by contractors. In many cases the roads have just been patched and made to look good.

The counsel are then left to pick up the cost of repairing the holes when they appear after bad weather. Of course, we do notice an increase in damaged tyres and even alloy wheels are smashed.

Many of these holes are covered with snow and ice.

Consequently, the only time the driver knows he has hit one is when he hears a loud bang. So as the cars wheel hits the hole.

The tyre damage is not often spotted until later when the car is in for a service or MOT test. By this time the damage has been done and a new tyre has to be purchased. Of course, tyre companies do recognise this problem. One particular tyre maker has come up with protective material in the side wall of the tyre. Nokian tyres are making certain sizes of SUV tyres, with added “Aramid” into the tyres construction.

Nokian say, “Durability and protection for surprising situations. The sidewall compound that is exceptionally durable and puncture-resistant contains extremely strong aramid fibres. The same material is utilised by the aerospace and defense industries. The aramid fibre strengthens the sidewall rubber to withstand external impacts and pressing against the wheel flange”.

These tyres are available in many but not all sizes. Of course it is a step in the right direction to help protect our tyres, cars and family should we come across some hidden pothole. The new technology is available on the Nokian Line SUV summer tyres and the Nokian Z Line SUV summer tyres. Customers can click onto the Nokian website to see of these tyres are available for their particular model of cars.

Nokian E-Line 2 Summer Tyres-A Tyre with An AA Rating due to Tough Aramid Protection Technology

Nokian E-Line 2 Summer Tyres

Nokian E-Line 2 Summer Tyres

In my early days of blogging. Then I used to write about almost every new tyre that was introduced by the manufactures. Eventually this began to grind me down. Most new tyres were similar to the last one, or claimed to be the tyre that was greener than the rest. As a result, I have been selling tyres for about forty years now. In the long run, tyres are just a consumer product.

This is certainly true to an extent. Tyre companies have had to come out with different solutions in recent years mainly due to the pressure from car manufacturers. In turn car manufacturers have also been under pressure from governments to bring down the emissions produced by their cars. This pressure has effected every part of the car. Including the tyres.

Tyre were beginning to become smaller and fatter. The 50 and 55 series tyres were introduced to fit some of the sportier cars in the market place. Looks were the thing. If a car looked good on fat tyres then that was kool ?

Things had to change for cars to become more eco friendly. Tyres were being made from unusual materials to make them lighter in weight. Continental are developing the white sticky liquid from “dandelions” Strange but dandelions have the same molecular build up as latex rubber. Yokohama tyres are using “orange skin oils” in their tyre compound mix.

Therefore a tyre that is lighter in weight and is built with a taller overall diameter is much greener.

These tyres will go further. using less of the vehicles fuel. Because they are carrying less weight than there predecessors.  The European Union brought out a guide line to show which tyres were the best in each department. The “A” is for fuel efficiency  the “B” is fore wet cornering and the “C” is in decibels for tyre noise. When the SUV market began to take off then there was a need to improve “Rolling Resistance” This was done by hardening the tyres compound.

Consequently this had the effect of the tyres having poor cornering. Especially in wet weather. Experiments were carried out with the new materials and “silica” would become the answer. Now most tyres contain silica. This gives the tyres a better rolling resistance and also helps the grip in wet weather situations. Companies were coming out with AA rated tyres the first were the Goodyear Efficient Grips, Pirelli Cinturato P7 Blue and the Bridgestone Ecopia EP001S tyres.

The latest addition to this group is the Nokian E-Line 2 tyres.

As a result Nokian have added an excellent safety feature to the tyre an “Aramid” reinforcement is fitted to the range of SUV summer tyres .This new reinforcement is fitted to the range of SUV summer tyres. Extremely durable Aramid staple fibres, which are also successfully used in bulletproof vests, stiffen and reinforce the sidewall to make it exceptionally resistant to wear and cuts. This is a major safety feature. Especially with the growing amount of potholes that are appearing all over the place.

These sidewalls are so tough that Nokian Tyres Aramid Guarantee covers accidentally on sidewall damaged tyres and provides you with a new, corresponding product free of charge.

You can check out if Nokian E-Line 2 Summer Tyres make an Aramid tyre for your car by clicking and putting your car details in.

Winter Tyre Preparations-A Hundred things to do to prepare for Snowstorms & Extreme Cold | Ready.gov

Winter Tyre Preparations

Winter Tyre Preparations

Winter Tyre Preparations

It is very rare that we experience, what you could call “extreme” weather here in the UK. Perhaps people who live in parts of Scotland wont agree with me. But in general snow comes and goes within a couple of days. As I am writing this post then the weather is expected to turn colder with a possible snow fall t the end of the week.

However it will be nothing like the type of weather that is experience in the USA. Especially in the north and east of the country. This is the reason for me sharing this article from Ready.gov. So, it lists hundreds of things that we should prepare. Hence, to cope with expected extreme cold and snow storms.

I remember watching a film from around the time of the American civil war. A family were snowed in for months. OK they lived in the mountains in the middle of know where, but the experience must have been daunting to say the least. These days we have a machines that get us out of such situations. people will still be cut off, but possibly for not as long.

Winter Tyre Preparations

Of course, this brings me around to one of my favorite subjects”Tyres”? I do know that in our modern times, people just have to move about. They will get to town whatever it may take. Many drivers now own 4×4’s and huge SUV’s to enable them to get about. Of course these machines would have to have winter tyres fitted.

Especially when snow falls on a regular occurrence. In places like Canada then snow chains are also used to help drivers get about as best as possible. Winter tyres are now one of the best aids for getting through winter safely. Of course we are now stockists of the Nokian winter tyre brand. Nokian claim to be the inventor of the winter tyre. Back in Finland it is extremely cold with continuous heavy snowfalls and this is where winter tyres originally came from.

Mixing Tyre Technologies-Does your car have the wrong tyres?, Hub – THE BUSINESS TIMES

Mixing Tyre Technologies

Mixing Tyre Technologies

Mixing Tyre Technologies

The question posed by this article in “The Business Times” is about the mix of tyre manufacturers technologies. Hence when it comes to mixing different tyre brands to the larger and now popular SUV vehicles. In my opinion it is yet another grey area in the crazy world of tyres. “Should we do this” and “can we do that” is a question that I hear every week.

So, the advent of the SUV has certainly opened up a new can of worms. Over the last decade tyre manufacturers have introduced a string of new tyre products. Consequently, pressure was brought on the tyre makers from governments wanting the car manufacturers to make greener and leaner cars. As a result, then tyres had to become lighter in weight and larger in circumference to give less “rolling resistance“.

Coincidentally, the SUV’s came out about the same time. The SUV’s had much larger tyres and it looks to me that new technology tyres were to be developed with these vehicles in mind.

Tyre makers were looking for all types of new materials to add to the rubber latex. Thus, trying to lighten the tyre weight. Continental tyres came up with the milk like substance extracted from “dandelions“. It was found that the milky substance found in the dandelion was of the same molecular make up as the latex . Now Continental are growing vast areas of these plants near their German tyre factories.

Mixing Tyre Technologies

Other finds include the Yokohama tyres use of orange peel oil. However I dont really want to get too technical. The issue is should we mix these different tech tyres on the same vehicle. Especially if the tyres were developed along side the car manufacturers. Of course the SUV’s are now big and powerful, made by all the worlds leading luxury car makers.

Have we now got to the stage when it is important that we stick to the same tyres as the original equipment ones. As a tyre dealer for over forty years, then I am beginning to think so. The attached article explains about the specific tyres that are made for certain SUV’s. Thus, tyres like the Bridgestone Alenza and Italian brand Pirelli’s Scorpion series.

This class of vehicle are also fitted with specific tyres such as the Yokohama Blu-earth RV-02. So, even Nokian are making a winter tyre for the SUV the Nokian WR SUV 3 tyres. Should the specific tyre types be compromised. Personally I do not think so?

When I am on the front line dealing with customers, then I always tell them to the best of my ability. In this case then I would recommend that the car should be on the same tyres that were fitted as original equipment. If they choose not to then it is their responsibility going forward. I suppose looking at it then this is a problem with buying your SUV tyres online.

Mixing Tyre Technologies

The registration number lookup only tells the buyer the size of the tyre and not what the SUV should have on. Subsequently, the best way is for the car owner to take the information from the tyre sidewall and order exactly the same tyres. Definitely a very grey area?
