UCCC-Good News for Unipart Car Care Centres in the UK

Good News for Unipart Car Care Centres  (UCCC)  in the UK

I became a Unipart car care Centre” UCCC” about 5 years ago. I have been very pleased with updates that have been thought out for us to give improved service to our local

unipart UCCC sign

Popular  UCCC sign outside a members garage

customers in Halifax here in Yorkshire UK.

I have always been a fan of becoming a member of an organization such as UCCC. This is  because it can give a small local garage like us a nationwide coverage. When it comes to helping out our customers who may get into trouble when traveling to other parts of the country, say on holiday or perhaps visiting relations. As part of the service that we offer. It is a good feeling that we know about  safeguarding  our customers. It gives us the same strengths as the multinational companies that are out there competing with us.

If we say carry out a service or a repair job to your car and you visit your long lost aunt in Brighton, then your car will be covered by this warranty. Should a part fail or go faulty, then we can arrange for the car to be repaired in that area by contacting another UCCC centre. By contacting us here in Halifax and we will arrange for your car fixing so that you can have a safe journey home.

There are other advantages to being a UCCC, such as the quality of the replacement parts that we supply. These parts are up to the manufacturers specifications for quality and can be used on a car that is still covered by the car manufacturer’s warranty, without affecting that warranty, which is great news for us small independent garages. Here at Pellonautocentre in Halifax we have always prided ourselves for giving excellent service and customer satisfaction and this tied in to being a member of UCCC.

Horror when Unipart went into administration on 23rd July 2014.

You can imagine my disappointment when I heard that Unipart had gone into administration,( last week). We would have certainly survived but it could have made things a little more difficult, especially regarding outstanding warranties. The Unipart Company are now in the hands of the administrators KPMG. But to my surprise I found out that the Unipart Group are a separate company to Unipart Automotive who control UCCC, of which we are members.

This is a recent e-mail to all the UCCC members from Stuart McHale…

“We were saddened by the news about Unipart Automotive, but it is important to note that Unipart Group continues to be a financially strong, growing company in

UCCC

manufacturing, global logistics; consultancy and International automotive aftermarket operations

Express Factors, KiS users and Unipart Car Care Centres throughout the UK will understandably have immediate concerns for their future, so I wanted to update you on the current arrangements.

Unipart Group and Andrew Page have moved as quickly as possible to work in partnership to provide new services and Andrew Page will now become a national stockist and distributor of Unipart products. For those KiS and UCCC’s previously supplied by a Unipart Automotive branch, please contact your local Andrew Page branch to agree service and supply arrangements.

Unipart Group is working to make new arrangements with a number of software and programme suppliers to provide systems functionality and support services and intends to make the Unipart brand available to UCCC who meet minimum standards”

This is great news for all the UCCC member depots across the UK, including myself and we will be looking forward to the start of a new regime.

Unipart Car Care Centre Halifax West Yorkshire

This year at Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre will be our 25th year in business. To celebrate we are holding a huge party for our customers and suppliers, who have supported us over the past years. In that time we have tried any many different trade associations to better us and the customer experience, by offering different things that would improve their experience when unipartvisiting our garage for tyres servicing or indeed general repairs.

The two organisations that we are currently associated with are the best that I have had the pleasure to deal with.

Unipart Car Care Centre (UCCC)

We have been a Unipart UCCC now for five years and have benefited our customers with the service that they offer. The Unipart UCCC garage network now extends to over 200 independent garages that operate throughout the British Isles. They consist of a blend of normal type garages, fast fit centres and other motoring organizations and are the largest network in the country (UK).

Because we are all independent garages we probably carry out car servicing in slightly different ways, but we all work in the same ethical way offering our customers a top quality service with genuine monetary savings, that we must adhere to as part of our UCCC membership.

We use top quality service schedules that are available online on… https://www.pellonautocentre.com/CarServicing/CarServicingPriceList2012.pdf

The price list says 2012, but we are sticking to these prices for the near future. On some car models we will use the Autodata car servicing manual to give us the exact requirements for the customers car’s needs. Just to mention it , we do have the computer equipment to correct and re-set any of the cars service lights when the service is completed.

Unipart original Equipment Quality Parts.

Another bonus for our customers is that we use 90% of Unipart sourced parts to use on our customers cars. This ensures that we fit real quality parts when we carry out a service or repairs to our customers cars .We have to ensure the best parts because all our customers are covered by a Unipart Car Parts 12 months parts a labor guarantee, which is applicable all over the mainland UK.

So if you are going on holiday, say to Brighton from Halifax and you had a problem with some work that we carried out, then you could take the car to the nearest Unipart UCCC depot and the unipartproblem would be sorted out for you to carry on with your holiday, a great bonus for all the Uccc Members customers.  All Unipart Car Care Centres are signed up to the Motor Industry Code of Practice.

The second great organization that I have joined has been Point-s.co.uk they operate an online tyre pricing system to compete with the other online tyre retailers, but the difference is that the pricing system is to help us local businesses compete with the huge national customers. When you buy a tyre through Point-s.co.uk tyre buying system, then the sale comes to us at local level, we are then contacted by the customer who arranges a date for the tyres to be fitted, This is a great system for a popular but local tyre centre to compete with the big companies, and it also means that our customers have a choice from where they can buy from, knowing that if they have a problem in the future they can still rely on our great service and guarantee system.

Both these partners to our business have helped us compete in this ever changing computer internet driven world many thanks.

Flat Tyre-A Woman’s Guide to Changing their own Wheel?

Women often do change their flat tyre

While sometimes it may be great to play a damsel in distress and have a strong and well-toned man fix your flat tyre, I think every woman ought to know how to change a flat tyre. After all, having your tyre blow is never something anyone plans and you may not have any ready and eager boy scout waiting around to rescue you. There is no need to keep the tyre changing in a man’s domain. Times are changing and you should too. Time to empower yourself and get ready to tackle that tyre!

 1. First of all, if there is a place for you to move your car out of the way move your car there. Make sure oncoming traffic will be able to see you. Turn on your hazards and if you have an

Flat Tyre

Lady changing her own wheel

early warning device, place where it will be clearly visible. Also make sure the place you move your vehicle to is flat and even. Avoid soft ground and inclines. Place some bricks, blocks or large rocks under your car to prevent your car from rolling backwards.

 2. If you have hubcaps, remove them. These are the covers of your tyres. Check you manual on how to remove them. I highly suggest you look at this beforehand and not when you have already blown a tyre.

 3. Next you need to remove the wheel nuts. These are the caps that hold your wheel in place. You will need a lug wrench to do this. The lug wrench is the T shaped wrench that should be together with all your other tools. The shape of the wrench makes for easy leverage, but if your upper body strength is lacking the heft or muscle needed to loosen the lug nuts, you may have to resort to step on the T-arm for better leverage. And remember, left to loosen and right to tighten.

 4. Now you need your car jack to raise your car. Most cars have a flat plate behind the front tyres and just in front of the back ones for this purpose. Place the jack under the tyre to be changed and raise it to meet the plate. Double check and make sure your car will be steady once it is raised. Safety is crucial whenever you are working with your car. Now raise your car about 15 cm of the ground. Don’t forget that an inflated tyre will need room so make sure there is enough space for the spare to be placed on.

remove the flat tyre

 5. by grabbing it with both hands, one on each side. Pull it straight and off. Now line up your spare with the bolts and slide it on. Replace the lug nuts but do not tighten them completely. When you have lowered your car, use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts in opposite pairs. Make sure these are as tight as possible because you absolutely do not want your tyre to come off when you’re driving.

 6. It’s time to clean up and put things back in place. Put all your tools together and place them back where they were stored. Always put them back in the same place so you know right

Flat Tyre, women checking her car tyre

women customer checking her car tyre

away where to find them in case of emergencies. Knowing where all of the tools are before you get into an emergency situation is suggested. Put your flat tyre where you spare one was and make sure to have it fixed right away.

Now that you know how to change a flat tyre, remember to practice prudence before you decide to bust out your inner mechanic. If you find yourself near enough to civilization, it might be wiser to call for help or assistance. A woman alone with her car and a flat tyre could be a signal for the less than honourable to take advantage of the situation. If you have no recourse but to change the tyre yourself, make sure you have some form of protection nearby like pepper spray. Also make sure to call a friend or relative to let them know what happened when your tyre blows so someone is aware of where you are and the situation you are in. This will at least give people you know the information of your whereabouts.

Having your tyres in good condition is one way to avoid a flat tyre. While some causes like a puncture from a nail or other sharp object cannot be avoided, keeping your tyres well inflated and careful driving will lessen the chances of your having to change a flat in the future.

And if you need new tyres, Point-S has over 160 independently owned centres across the UK to help you find the right tyre for your need. Its knowledgeable and professional staff will be able to give you brand neutral advice to help you make the right decision for your tyre needs. And if your car needs other types of auto service, they offer than as well. And because they are part of the Unipart Car Care Centre network, you know they adhere to the core values of:

• An open and honest approach with the customers

• A high standard of work and excellent value for money

• 12 month guarantee on parts and labour

• An open invitation to inspect, review and rate the garages of your choice to make the best informed decision for your needs

Stay safe on the road ladies!

Car Brakes-Entering the FRICTION ZONE — Older vehicle PARC sees increase in Car brakes sales

Entering the FRICTION ZONE — Aging vehicle parc ripe for car brakes sales

Tire Business

“Where before when a vehicle reached 10 years or 11 years, consumers were thinking of selling it, now they’re thinking of, ‘How can I keep my car going?

eric roberts‘s insight:

This is a very in depth articles about car brakes

Car brakes are very often taken for granted, in other words car owners will just pull into your garage and leave their car, because there is a banging or rattling noise coming from the front of the car.

This is usually a good indication that the car brakes have failed,or are failing, but brake jobs do follow a pattern.

The spring time is usually the time for our customers car brakes to start going wrong and needing repairing. In my opinion i think that it is because that drivers use their car brakes

car brakes

A nice new set of brake discs fitted

much more in the winter months and therefore the brake pads and discs .

Drivers almost always wait until the last minute to have them repaired and consequently cause more damage to the brakes.

For example a simple job like a set of brake pads replacing may turn out to be more complicated and end up the car needing new discs, or a seized up brake caliper.

This will result in a larger garage invoice for the customer. The secret is to get a free brake check at your local garage. most garages here in the UK will give a car a free brake check and give the customer a quote for the required work. We are members of the Unipart Car Care Centres who also offer a nationwide guarantee throughout the UK and a free brake check on all makes and models of cars.

All this culminates as a good time of year for doing brake work, especially the many older cars that our customers are now hanging on to longer and having them repaired instead of replaced.

UK motorists-1 in 10 think the MOT test is Only an OPTION?

UK motorists,mot test

Millions of UK motorists are clueless about the legal requirement for MOT test, insurance and road tax (Mot’s only cover approx 20% of your car being checked but servicing covers approx 70% as i was told when i last…

eric Roberts’ insight:

As the owner of an MOT test station

I can believe these figures from the excellent Auto express magazine. This article makes interesting reading and state that 10% of UK motorists, car owners do not know that the MOT test is compulsory on cars that are after three years old.

The British government are computerising the whole system of car insuring and road tax along with the DVLA MOT Rules. In my opinion, they would be better off aligning the threeUK motorists, mot test

MOT test sign to look out for

together so that you could not have one without the other. At the moment, they are not aligned and you could have a car insured without an MOT test. In my opinion, this will be the Governments aim as at the end of this year the road tax disc will be abolished and the system will go online and make it easier for the UK motorists, the List of New MOT Rules and  details will probably have to be entered along with the insurance details, thus tightening up on the whole system which is at the moment flawed.

Electric Car Servicing-Buying An Electric ‘Compliance Car’? Think Hard About-

electric car servicing

There are now more than a dozen plug-in electric cars for sale in the U.S., but not all electric cars are created equal.

eric Roberts’ insight: Electric car Servicing

This is an interesting article about the difficulty that the American motorists could experience when wanting to repair or service their electric battery operated cars.

It tells of the state of California giving the car manufacturers a quota for a number of vehicles, that they are to supply as compared to normal gasoline engined ones.

The problem is that the amount of electric car servicing garages are in short supply, especially Toyota.

The question on my mind is “whatever happened to the Right to Repair Laws” that are in operation in the States and in the European Union. This states that service garages should be given the access to  technical details of all the cars that car manufacturers are making. So why can’t the regular garages service these cars? If you know out there please let me have the answers. It has always been a strong suspicion of mine that this work will be kept away from the independent garage sector and Electric Car Servicing will not be open to us. In some ways they cannot be blamed for wanting to protect all their investment and development, but every other product that has ever been produced would have had to start out somewhere, so this won’t stick with me, we should all have a share in this market as we do today, I hope the EU are looking at this, so that they can legislate against the car makers protectionism and give us all a fair deal allowing us to carry out Electric Car Servicing, alongside petrol engine car servicing.

Solar Energy Batteries- May Vie With U.S. Oil Boom as Energy Changer

Solar Energy Batteries

Solar Energy Batteries

The rapid development of rooftop solar and Solar Energy Batteries storage technology could be as trans formative to the economy and modern life as the U.S. oil and gas boom, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said. (Batteries May Vie With U.S.

Eric Roberts’ insight: Solar batteries

The USA Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz has come out with a statement that I have been talking about for a couple of years now. In this article, he says that the USA could start to be getting independent of the national energy providers if the growth in solar Renewable Energy and other renewable resources can keep growing at the present rate.

In my opinion, the public in America. Of course, and other continents such as here in the UK. Have really grasped the nettle as far as going it alone with solar energy. The solar panels in this picture are situated in a small town in West Yorkshire UK. Starting producing energy from the Sun as early as February. The electricity that is produced by these solar panels is sent straight to the electricity grid. Through a reverse meter and the electric company pays the house owner for the electricity that is provided.

In America there is a growing trend to store the electricity. Hence, that is collected from the panels. Into banks of Solar Energy Batteries. This is also useful in rural and more isolated areas. Where the batteries can store the electricity. As a result, for use at night by the house owners.

The most effective type of Solar Energy Batteries to use is AGM batteries.

These AGM batteries will cost more in the first instance. But will give better service due to the ability to have much greater charge and discharge cycles. Than say a normal lead-acid Car Batteries.

There are many DIY videos available. Showing, householders how to set up a Solar Energy Batteries system. One of them is Trojan AGM Battery. Subsequently, these batteries are very suited for the use with solar energy. So, anyone thinking of doing this should look at the Trojan AGM product.

Like the USA energy secretary Ernest Moriz. I too wonder how long off are we before we are producing more electricity. Say than the national providers and what happens then?.

Spring Service-It’s Time To Start Preparing Your Car- AOL Autos

Spring Service

It’s Time To Start Preparing Your Car For Spring service

AOL Autos

Proper wheel alignment allows your car to handle properly. It also means that your tires won’t wear out prematurely.

Eric Roberts’ insight:

Spring Service

This year will be no better time to have your car or SUV serviced. The reason why is that here in the South West of England, we have experienced the wettest winter for many years.

The cars have been wading in floods all across the South and especially in the Somerset Wetland’s, an area of England that is bellow sea levels and has been heavily flooded for most of the winter.

In my opinion, it is important now that the flooding has receded, to take you car into a local Car Service centre and have a Spring Service and the Car Brakes checked over.

The most vulnerable parts to suffer from water damage are your cars brakes. Most modern engines are now sealed units and do not have spark plugs and electric coils anymore,

Not just a Spring Service any service will benefit your car

spring service

Catalytic Converters can easily be damaged by flood water

but the water can enter your exhaust pipes and cause damage to the catalytic converter. This may not be detected straight away, but you may end up with your cars engine management light coming on at a later stage, as the water damage shows up in your cars engine management system and particulate filter.

Most things will be picked up when you Spring Service your car, but this is a good time have a spring service as the weather start to improve, as I say especially the cars braking system. Many good Auto-centres now offer a free  brake check here in the UK and if you do not have a garage then you could do no worse that looks up your nearest Unipart Auto-centre, where you know that you will be treated fairly with honest pricing and their work is covered by a nationwide guarantee.

Aquion manufactures New Type of Battery, long-lasting batteries for storing renewable energy. (Demo: #Aquion manufactures cheap, long-lasting batteries for storing renewable energy.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Another New Type of  Battery for solar energy  Hits the Road

Mount Pleasant in Pennsylvania will be the site for the production of yet another new type of battery. The company will be known as Aquion Energy and will start producing a new type of battery that was invented by professor J Whitacre from the material science department of the Carnegie Mellon University.

These new type of battery is expected to cost about the same to produce as lead-acid ones that are in common use today for a multitude of applications, but are expected to last

twice as long. They  will be primarily used for the storage of the suns power generated from Solar Panels for Electricity and  Turbines, offering a storage facility for homes in rural and isolated areas that use the off grid powered by the sun, which  supplies and require storage for night use and bad weather when the sun is not available. At the moment these people use different types of lead-acid ones and fossil fueled engines powered by diesel as standby supplies when the sun does not shine for whatever reasons.

For the reasons that I have explained this new type of battery is expected to be used in countries that do not have an electric grid, but are expected to get electricity in the near future and because this new type of battery will be available for storage, then these countries will save a huge amount of money by running diesel generators when the sun does not shine and at night. I am sure that Africa will be one of the first places to benefit from such inventions.

The new company have also used ingenious ways of saving money during the manufacturing process of the new batteries, using machines that were originally used for making aspirin pills to make the thin plates used to make the positive and negative electrode materials. They also use parts from a sweet wrapping machine to pack the electrodes together to collect current.

The company expects to start full scale production in early 2014 and hopes to make enough batteries to supply 150 solar powered villages.

Bridgestone Run-Flat tyres-These Runflat tyres are undoubtedly a serious Safety Feature

Bridgestone Run-Flat tyres

Bridgestone Run-Flat tyres

When I first heard about the Bridgestone Run-Flat tyres concept,

At first, I was a little bit skeptical. So,about how runflats would work? Say when the car was driven at eighty miles per hour on a wet busy motorway. However as time has gone on and with a little more research. Then I have got used to the idea of your car not having a spare wheel. Also the fact that the car does not swerve or deviate as the tyre is deflated at speed.

Now run-flat tyres are just part of the tyre scene. Our customers just accept the fact that if one goes flat and they have to drive home on it. Consequently, then they are going to need a new tyre at some stage in the future. I am a great advocate of road safety. Convinced at  the fact that tyres play a great part in the tyre safety picture.

Run-flat tyres are now part of that picture along with all the other safety features. Hence, that are being produced by innovative tyre companies at the moment. Such as “self-seal” technology. Recently, introduced by Continental tyres, Pirelli tyres and Kumho tyres.

The fact is that run-flat tyres are now being fitted to many cars. Now one of the leading makers of Run Flat Tyres . Of course, are the giant number one tyre company of the World, Bridgestone tyres. One of the growth markets for run-flat tyres is the larger and heavier premium cars. Such as Mercedes and BMW. Who have in fact worked side by side with Bridgestone to help develop this concept of tyre. Naturally which is safe for the driver and just as important to other road users.

Bridgestone Run-Flat tyres

If run-flat tyres are subject to a sudden pressure loss. So, then the car will keep driving in a straight line. Continuing on its journey. Of course, without any mishandling or deviation. So not causing any problems to the other drivers in the same vicinity. A normal car tyre that is subject to an instant loss of pressure would probably disintegrate at speed and because the car to deviate badly, this is, in fact, the cause of many car crashes, this could result in the car colliding with several other cars causing a very bad accident.

Another good point to remember is that there is no need to have to pull onto the shoulder and change your spare wheel? You can drive the car, to your nearest tyre centre. If you are a stranger to the area then I would suggest that you look up your nearest Point-S tyre centre. These centres are dotted all over the UK and are vetted for a fair price and give excellent

Run-Flat tyres

Alex balancing a run flat tyre in Halifax UK

service. Point-S can be found online at www.point-s.co.uk and if you like you can even check out the price on the website, to see what a great deal you can get.

A slight drawback with run-flat tyres is

That once you have detected that the tyre is no longer inflated, then you are restricted to driving at 50mph at a distance of 50 miles, but this can give most people ample time to get to the nearest town and have the tyre changed. Also for the old-fashioned amongst you then the cars with run-flats, do not have a spare, this was

Run-Flat tyres

This Audi TT is been fitted with Dunlop run-flat tyres

originally to give the cars more space where the spare tyre would normally be sitting, also it lightens the weight of the car to help conform with emission controls.

Also, BMW Run Flat Tires Problems now run alongside with the TPMS systems (Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems). This warns the driver if the tyres are losing any pressure, or in fact if the tyres have suffered from an instant loss of air. The warning light will illuminate and warn the driver that they have a problem with a tyre. This is a great all round system and is a great safety feature in many new models of cars that are now entering the marketplace, including the SUV models.

Other tyre companies also make the run-flat tyre and I believe that a budget tyre is available made by economy tyre company Wanli. Most of the leading tyre companies now make run-flat tyres and there is now a large choice available.
