Car Suspension Noises – From Your Suspension? Here’s a Real Example from Halifax
At Pellon Autocentre in Halifax, we often get customers bringing their cars in because of strange noises – creaks, rattles, and creaking noises from your suspension? Here’s a Real Example from Halifax
At Pellon Autocentre in Halifax, we often get customers bringing their cars in because of strange noises – creaks, rattles, squeaks and bangs. One of the more common ones we hear about is that dreaded creaking noise – the one that seems to come from everywhere and drives you round the bend.
The latest culprit? A 2002 VW Golf GT TDi with only 69,000 miles on the clock – low mileage for its age. The owner complained of a creaking sound that seemed to come from all around the car, especially when driving at low speed. Even reversing down his own driveway made it groan.
He popped by and we took it for a road test. As we often do, we drove around the large car park outside the local Co-op supermarket with the window down – this makes it easier to hear suspension-related noises at low speed.
Sure enough, the creaking was clearly audible.
What Causes Creaking Noises in Suspension? Car Suspension Noises
We started with the car’s history and found it had new anti-roll bar bushes fitted a couple of months earlier. That gave us a clue. In our experience, these types of noises often come from loose or worn parts like:
- Drop links
- Wishbone bearings
- Anti-roll bar mounts
- Top strut mounts
In this case, we suspected the drop link bolts might be at fault. Sure enough – they weren’t as tight as they should be. We re-torqued them, re-tested the car… And bingo, the noise was gone!
Happy Customer, Silent Car Car Suspension Noises
The owner was chuffed to bits – no more creaking or groaning. He drove off with a quiet car and a big smile.
Don’t Ignore Suspension Noises. Car Suspension Noises
If you notice odd sounds coming from your suspension, it’s best to get them checked sooner rather than later. Worn suspension parts not only affect comfort – they can also affect steering, tyre wear, and even your car’s ability to pass its MOT. At Pellon Autocentre, we use our experience to find the root cause quickly and get you back on the road safely.
We often see similar issues on cars like the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, and older Peugeot models, especially after winter when potholes have taken their toll. Loose or worn parts can sometimes be tightened, but often a simple, affordable replacement part is all that’s needed.
