Electric Car Servicing-Buying An Electric ‘Compliance Car’? Think Hard About-

electric car servicing

There are now more than a dozen plug-in electric cars for sale in the U.S., but not all electric cars are created equal.

Eric Roberts’ insight:

Electric car Servicing

This is an interesting article about the difficulty that the American motorists could experience when wanting to repair or service their electric battery operated cars.

It tells of the state of California giving the car manufacturers a quota for a number of vehicles, that they are to supply as compared to normal gasoline engined ones.

The problem is that the amount of electric car servicing garages are in short supply, especially Toyota.

Fundamentally, the question on my mind is “whatever happened to the Right to Repair Laws” ! Naturally, that are in operation in the United States and in the European Union. Significantly, this states that service garages should be given the access to  technical details. Including all the cars that car manufacturers are making.

So, why can’t the regular garages service these cars? In fact recently, I paid an expert on electric cars to brief my staff about the impending influx of electric cars. Special equipment is required  ! Because these vehicle are extremely dangerous ! Of course due to the possibility of electric shocks.

Because of certain restrictions then it has always been a strong suspicion of mine.

So, that this work will be kept away from the independent garage sector. Resentfully, Electric Car Servicing will not be open to us. In many ways they cannot be blamed for wanting to protect all their investment and development. However, every other product that has ever been produced. So, would have had to start out somewhere!

Accepting this is difficult for me and  this won’t stick with me. Consequently, we should all have a share in this market as we do today. I hope the EU are looking at this, so that they can legislate against the car makers protectionism ! Giving us all a in the garage business a fair deal. Thus allowing us to carry out Electric Car Servicing, alongside petrol engine car servicing.

Importantly, we can service the “Hybrid cars” and indeed do so.

UK motorists-1 in 10 think the MOT test is Only an OPTION?

UK motorists,mot test

Millions of UK motorists are clueless

about the legal requirement for MOT test, insurance and road tax (Mot’s only cover approx 20% of your car being checked but servicing covers approx 70% as i was told when i last…

Eric Roberts’ insight:

As the owner of an MOT test station

Of course, I do believe these figures from the excellent Auto express magazine. Significantly this article makes interesting reading ! Stating that 10% of UK motorists . Many car owners do not know that the MOT test is compulsory ! Importantly,  on cars that are over three years old.

The British government are computerizing the vehicle system. Including the whole system of car insuring and road tax along with the DVLA MOT Rules. In my opinion, they would be better off aligning the three systems. This of course would make it much easier to regulate and also for ease of use to the vehicle owners.

So, enabling it impossible to have one thing without the other ! Of course, at the moment, they are not aligned . Incredibly, you could have a car insured without an MOT test. In my opinion, this will be the Governments aim. Because at the end of this year the road tax disc will be abolished and the system will go online. Making it easier for the UK motorists, the List of New MOT Rules and  details will probably have to be entered along with the insurance details. Thus tightening up on the whole system which is at the moment flawed.

Today 2019, then this as all been implemented. Therefore no UK vehicles have to show a tax disc ! Vehicle data is all computerised and also available at any time for police officers to check.

It’s Time To Start Preparing Your Car For Spring service

AOL Autos

Proper wheel alignment allows your car to handle properly. It also means that your tyres won’t wear out prematurely.

Eric Roberts’ insight:

Spring Service

This year will be no better time to have your car or SUV serviced. The reason why is that here in the South West of England, we have experienced the wettest winter for many years.

The cars have been wading in floods all across the South and especially in the Somerset Wetland’s, an area of England that is bellow sea levels and has been heavily flooded for most of the winter.

In my opinion, it is important now that the flooding has receded, to take you car into a local Car Service centre and have a Spring Service and the Car Brakes checked over.

The most vulnerable parts to suffer from water damage are your cars brakes. Most modern engines are now sealed units and do not have spark plugs and electric coils anymore,

Not just a Spring Service any service will benefit your car

spring service

Catalytic Converters can easily be damaged by flood water

Significantly, though the water can enter your exhaust pipes. Thus causing damage to the catalytic converter. Consequently, this may not be detected straight away! But you may end up with your cars engine management light coming on at a later stage. Irritatingly, the water damage shows up in your cars engine management system. Including your particulate filter.

Most things will be picked up when you Spring Service your car, but this is a good time have a spring service as the weather start to improve, as I say especially the cars braking system.

Many good Auto-centres now offer a free  brake check here in the UK and if you do not have a garage then you could do no worse that looks up your nearest Unipart Auto-centre, where you know that you will be treated fairly with honest pricing and their work is covered by a nationwide guarantee.

Bridgestone Run-Flat tyres-These Runflat tyres are undoubtedly a serious Safety Feature

Bridgestone Run-Flat tyres

Bridgestone Run-Flat tyres

When I first heard about the Bridgestone Run-Flat tyres concept,

At first, I was a little bit skeptical. So,about how runflats would work? Say when the car was driven at eighty miles per hour on a wet busy motorway. However as time has gone on and with a little more research. Then I have got used to the idea of your car not having a spare wheel. Also the fact that the car does not swerve or deviate as the tyre is deflated at speed.

Now run-flat tyres are just part of the tyre scene. Our customers just accept the fact that if one goes flat and they have to drive home on it. Consequently, then they are going to need a new tyre at some stage in the future. I am a great advocate of road safety. Convinced at  the fact that tyres play a great part in the tyre safety picture.

Run-flat tyres are now part of that picture along with all the other safety features. Hence, that are being produced by innovative tyre companies at the moment. Such as “self-seal” technology. Recently, introduced by Continental tyres, Pirelli tyres and Kumho tyres.

The fact is that run-flat tyres are now being fitted to many cars. Now one of the leading makers of Run Flat Tyres . Of course, are the giant number one tyre company of the World, Bridgestone tyres. One of the growth markets for run-flat tyres is the larger and heavier premium cars. Such as Mercedes and BMW. Who have in fact worked side by side with Bridgestone to help develop this concept of tyre. Naturally which is safe for the driver and just as important to other road users.

Bridgestone Run-Flat tyres

If run-flat tyres are subject to a sudden pressure loss. So, then the car will keep driving in a straight line. Continuing on its journey. Of course, without any mishandling or deviation. So not causing any problems to the other drivers in the same vicinity. A normal car tyre that is subject to an instant loss of pressure would probably disintegrate at speed and because the car to deviate badly, this is, in fact, the cause of many car crashes, this could result in the car colliding with several other cars causing a very bad accident.

Another good point to remember is that there is no need to have to pull onto the shoulder and change your spare wheel? You can drive the car, to your nearest tyre centre. If you are a stranger to the area then I would suggest that you look up your nearest Point-S tyre centre. These centres are dotted all over the UK and are vetted for a fair price and give excellent

Run-Flat tyres

service. Point-S can be found online at www.point-s.co.uk and if you like you can even check out the price on the website, to see what a great deal you can get.

A slight drawback with run-flat tyres is

That once you have detected that the tyre is no longer inflated, then you are restricted to driving at 50mph at a distance of 50 miles, but this can give most people ample time to get to the nearest town and have the tyre changed. Also for the old-fashioned amongst you then the cars with run-flats, do not have a spare, this was

Run-Flat tyres

This Audi TT is been fitted with Dunlop run-flat tyres

originally to give the cars more space where the spare tyre would normally be sitting, also it lightens the weight of the car to help conform with emission controls.

Also, BMW Run Flat Tires Problems now run alongside with the TPMS systems (Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems). This warns the driver if the tyres are losing any pressure, or in fact if the tyres have suffered from an instant loss of air. The warning light will illuminate and warn the driver that they have a problem with a tyre. This is a great all round system and is a great safety feature in many new models of cars that are now entering the marketplace, including the SUV models.

Other tyre companies also make the run-flat tyre and I believe that a budget tyre is available made by economy tyre company Wanli. Most of the leading tyre companies now make run-flat tyres and there is now a large choice available.

Pellon Tyres 25 years old and still going strong here in Halifax UK?

Eric Roberts Managing Director of Pellon Tyres

It only hit home to me a few week ago about the achievements that 25 years of running the same business really means to me. All my staff are getting excited about our 25 years “Bash” celebration that we are holding for our local suppliers and customers at the Raggalds Inn at Queensbury on the borders of Halifax here in West Yorkshire.

pellon tyres

Busy repairing cars picture courtesy of the Halifax Courier

It is very hard to believe that we started with two small bays back in 1989, all that time ago; and over the years we have turned the garage business into one of the busiest and trusted in the West Yorkshire area.

In the beginning we inherited a stock of cheap budget tyres and a few hundred remoulds of different sizes, but we had to sell these tyres before we could build up a better stock. However the first day we opened, it snowed here in Halifax and we were inundated with telephone calls and customers driving in to buy tyres. I only started out the new venture with two tyre

pellon tyres

Debbie Bastow 25 years service and now Manageress

fitters and my assistant then Debbie Bastow, but we managed to get through that, with much higher than expected takings, I was very pleased and we had sold much of our budget tyres stock in the first day (a good sign).

A few years later I decided to change the company name from Pellon Tyre and Exhaust to  Pellon Tyre and Autocentre, because we were by then selling other services to our customers, much in line with other companies in the same auto business as us. The next natural step to take was for us to become an MOT testing station and so I decided to buy the end part of the building that was being sold by a car body repair specialist. The sale eventually went through and I opened the two bays up, to become an MOT testing centre.

The garage and tyre business grew steadily over the years but like all other businesses in the UK we were hit by two or three recessions, (every ten years, so it seemed). As a business man I always reacted in a recession and in the nineties, I decided to become computerised and decided to purchase a computer system that was specific to our garage and tyre business. After looking at a few examples I chose the T.E.A.M. (Tyre and Exhaust Management) system. This was a great system and helped the business move forward by giving us more information, better stock control, and an accurate accounts system, both for customers and suppliers, giving us a much more efficient and competitive business.

Pellon Tyres business was up and down but the car repair side remained stable

Like so many other garage owners Pellon Tyres have tried all kinds of new methods and products to prop up our profit margins and keep our businesses competitive, these included bulk buy exhaust systems from Bosal using all different types of tyre selling techniques, but the trade was completely turned on its back with the advent of the internet and the selling of tyres and other auto products online.

Pellon Tyres had to “sink or swim” and quickly had our first web site built. Like many other small garages at the time we thought that all we needed was a website, not knowing the complexities that was involved in getting your website to rank on the search engines. My target was to attract and retain our existing tyre customers and this was helped greatly by the addition of a “tyre selector” bolted onto our website. This was supplied to Pellon Tyres by the tyre wholesaler Micheldever and meant that we could offer tyres at internet prices to our customer’s local to West

Pellon tyres

Staff picture(some missing) courtesy of the Halifax Courier

Yorkshire.

In my eyes this was a success and we were able to retain a large amount of our tyre customer base. Other things came along in the last few years. Pellon Tyres joined forces with Unipart Car Care Centres, to enable us to offer our garage customers a nationwide pricing and guarantee system, to compete with the large companies with multiple depots.

Pellon Tyres also joined a European tyre dealer network for independent tyre dealers called Point-S and now enjoy much better tyre prices that we can pass onto our customers by been able to buy direct from the tyre manufacturers, such as Avon, Goodyear, Hankook, Continental and Yokohama. These companies also supply us with technical information and promotional materials. In fact Yokohama tyres have just finished a complete re-branding of our depot here in Halifax. We are now a  fitting station for Asda Tyres.

I must admit thought that although the time has flown, I believe that we are now living in very exciting times in the auto industry, with major changes taking place both in the tyre industry and the car industry in general, mostly sparked off by the desire of governments to create a better and greener planet and whether we like it or not these massive changes are going to happen in many of our lifetimes.

As for me I now take a bit of a back seat and the lady who started off with me 25 years ago is now the manageress of the Pellon Auto Centre business and she does an excellent job running things for me, together with my wife Michelle, they now operate Pellon Tyres. I now have an office at home and run the important internet side of the business and our websites, (happy days).

CAR TAX DISCS TO GO- Same Way as MOT test-Done by Computer

CAR TAX DISCS

CAR TAX DISCS

A typical British road tax disc

Of course, as the owner of an MOT testing station here in Halifax UK. I am always interested in any moves by the government. Wanting  to change the system that we use for the taxing and testing. Of the cars on our roads here in the UK. So, as a blogger on the subject of cars. I also like to help inform people of any changes that may occur.

As many of the people that come to us for an MOT test do not know, the MOT Rules became computerised a few years ago now and the old hand written certificates were done away with and were replaced by an A4 size computer printout that is a receipt of your cars test results, either pass or fail.

This procedure was a great success in my opinion. All the testing received a new computer terminal. Of course, the test was carried out for that specific vehicle. From a computer check list, all clever stuff. The computer does all sorts of other things. But they are only important to the testing station. All the information is sent to a data . Naturally, based at the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency. Significantly, you can check the results of an MOT test by logging onto www.motinfo.gov.uk .

The main important thing to remember is that you need an MOT test before you can tax your car, you can now do this online at the DVLA website. Another good thing about the computer system is that all the information is sent to the police and they can check instantly if the car in font has an MOT certificate registered to it.

This is why a computerised CAR TAX DISCS will tie up with the mot test

The history of the car tax goes back to 1888. Set in motion by the then Chancellor a Mr George Goschen. At first the Tax was on the bigger carriages . Consequently, owned by the wealthy ! But he proposed a £1 duty to be paid every year. By any vehicle that had a weight of 10 cwt or more. This was to repair the roads that were damaged by the entire vehicles that used them. This was followed in 1921 by the introduction of the actual tax disc that had to be displayed on the vehicles, very much as it is today.

This now bring me up-to-date and the scraping of the CAR TAX DISCS . From October 2014 the DVLA will no longer issue an actual CAR TAX DISCS because the system is to go computerised and will tie up with the MOT test system. This new system will not affect the car owners very much; it will just mean that they will miss the fun of trying to tear the circular disc with perforations on the new disc window when it first comes through the post or from the post office.

One of the main advantages of NO CAR TAX DISCS  system will be that we will be able to pay monthly by direct debit taking the strain off some household budgets. Another advantage is that we will be able to check when the road tax is due online, but we will still get a reminder from the post office when the tax runs out. Because the total system will be digital, the police will be able to check the road tax dodgers on camera when they check your number plate it will now tell them if the car is taxed and Mot tested or not.

mot test station sign

A few questions that don’t seem to have been answered yet are, how would a person buying a second hand car know whether the car was taxed or not? Perhaps we will be able to check on a data base. Also how would we know if a vehicle has been abandoned or not, because there would be no tax disc?

Anyhow I am sure that the whole thing will be a great success and easier for the public and the police to manage in the future.

Falken tyres sign up with Tyresafe

Of course, this is good news for the Tyresafe organisation . So, as they strive forward in their drive to make Britain a safer place. Hence, by giving advice and safety information to educate. Thus, the motorists in their quest for safer tyres . Including the need to check your tyres and tyre pressures at regular intervals.

Tyresafes campaigns are beneficial to the members. Enabling them to participate in any tyre and road safety events. Coming from Tyresafe as the year goes on. Falken tyres, like many other companies do will be able to tie their own campaigns. Consequently, with the ones from Tyresafe. Making a coordinated attack on the public about tyre safety and part worn tyres.

Tyresafe have enrolled all types of companies from the tyre trade including Falken Tyres

From single depot businesses like my own company. So, to the giant tyre manufacturers such as Falken tyres from Japan. Tyresafe was originally founded in 2006 and in that period road related deaths resulting in tyre related accidents have fallen by 30%, a great achievement from the Tyresafe safety campaigns across the years.

In fact Tyresafe have now been able to attract other types of organisations and not just garages and tyre outlets, but such people as car manufacturers and local councils along with the emergency services have now joined the cause.

The Falken tyres director that is charge of Ireland and the UK recently explained that tyre safety was at the core of all that the Falken tyres company stood for and firmly believes that activities such as the tyre safety study that was recently carried out a t a primary school had made a real positive difference to society and this combined with the tyre safety objectives in the future will be beneficial to both companies, which is exactly my own sentiments and the reason why my own company joined Tyresafe.

Solar Storage Batteries using AGM Batteries

This attached article by Kalyan Jana. Senior applications engineer for Trojan Solar Storage Batteries renewable energy group. Thus is one of the most informative articles on the subject that I have ever

read.

The World of Solar Power Systems and Solar Storage Batteries. So, has now become a crazy mixed up mix of different peoples. Setting up different ways of storing their renewable energy. There are also many Universities all over the Planet looking for different types of batteries to use for storing the suns energy or the energy created by wind turbines.

Indeed it was only a few days ago that I wrote an article about Stamford University in the USA developing the nickel-iron Solar Storage Batteries, first invented by Thomas Edison and these batteries have been ear marked for the use of Solar Storage Batteries from the sun to store the large amounts of electricity that sun produces.

Solar Storage Batteries-The future from Trojan batteries

Many countries in the world do not have access to a grid electric supply. This sort of thing is taken for granted in the western world. But for many

Solar Storage Batteries

countries, such as parts of Africa. So, an electric supply is just a dream. In these days of the rapid growth in solar energy production,. Hence, the dream is starting to become a reality. It is difficult to believe that over 1.6 billion people do not have any mains electric power supply.

With the solar power revolution. It means that for the first time people will have the doors opened for better lighting. Including, better communications that will lead them to better education. Educated people can become nurses and business men. This will also mean that the people will have better school facilities. Of course,  and more access to clean drinking and bathing water.

All this will be possible because of smart grid technology that we are developing in the western world. New renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and wind turbines and better Solar Storage Batteries systems that are developed by Trojan batteries are all playing a hand that is making the dream of electricity come true to some of these poorer nations.

We think that one of the best  Types of Energy battery storage products at this present time is the Trojan AGM batteries for this purpose.

Point-s-Where Will the UK Tyre Market be Going Next as the giants battle it out?

Where Will the UK Tyre Market be Going Next?

What part will Point-S play?

This has always been a subject close to my own heart, I have worked in the tyre trade now for a good 40 years and like many more like me, we started our own tyre businesses in the seventies and eighties.

I am now a member of the independent tyre group Point-S, and I have recently attended the annual Point-S conference, in Stratford-On-Avon, and very nice it was too. The thing that

Point-s

A well stocked depot

struck me was the number of members that were in the same age bracket as me.

Most of us used to work for the national companies that were then owned by the leading tyre manufacturers and then decided that we could make a go out of running our own businesses and so the story goes. Many ex managers for companies like Tyreservices a Goodyear owned subsidiary and National Tyreservices, who were then owned by Dunlop, decided that if they could run a  depot for someone else then they could do it for themselves and so looked for premises and started their own  businesses.

Here in West Yorkshire. I can think of at least six people who worked for the national  retailers. Then leaving to start their own  businesses. Some also worked for the tyre manufactures. Of course, the likes of Morris Palmer in Hull, who left Goodyear tyres to form the famous Savoy tyres ! Now run by his son.

This was happening all over the UK. Revolutionized the way that tyres were sold.  To the growing market and expansion of the car market. Most households had a car by then and business was good and profitable. So, I started a business that we called Kut-Kost tyres. Accordingly,we grew into three depots and made a good living.

The advance of the tyre wholesaler.

Life went on for a few years and as we were selling more tyres. Of course, then the manufactures were offering better deals . Many of us were tempted to buy in quantity. We were at this stage having to compete with the emerging Kwik Fit Tyre Discount stores . Including the ever more competitive Nationals.

Before computers! Local newspapers would have up six different adverts. Offering all sorts of deals to the motorists. Driving down the tyre prices! Followed of course by lower profit margins. Significantly, buying containers was a way of increasing our bottom line.

At this stage we were all on a different level and knew who was the competition and could price our products accordingly to compete. What we didn’t see was the growing number of

Point-s

A very busy tyre bay

wholesalers that were springing up all over the country and were growing at an alarming rate. I remember my first visit to Southam tyres in the old Rolls-Royce factory in the midlands and was in awe at the amount of stock he carried. Reg Bond also started his empire at round about the same time forming Bond International from an old warehouse in Pocklington ,North Yorkshire and the rest is history.

Many  retailers started to buy the better deals shifting their purchases from the manufacturers to the  wholesalers in our relentless search to maintain our profit levels.

Many other things were happening, but looking back I think that this was a mistake and it gave too much power and the wholesalers, who later decided to form their own retail outlets in direct competition to ourselves, but we are all fighters and with some ducking and diving we always seem to come up with some alternative supplies of tyres and battle on.

I then sold Kut-Kost to an emerging national company owned by Shell Oil, called Superdrive . Superdrive was to form a direct completion to Kwik-Fit, but failed to get the project together and eventually my old depots were bought from Superdrive by Kwik-Fit. I then purchased and developed the business that I am in now, Pellon Tyres here in Halifax and 25 years on fell that we are going through the same torrid times that we had to endure in the early days.

In the past two years the tyre market has seen some huge changes.

These changes have been brought on by the advent of the internet and the growing trend for the motorists to buy online. I have no problem with that and indeed I sell tyres online but not at a national level, in the Yorkshire catchment area. The internet has now made it possible to buy tyres from the rest of Europe, who are now in direct competition with the British wholesalers. In my opinion it is a good thing and drives down the price of tyres making the tyre manufacturers the companies who are once again making the good profits as they did in years gone by when they would deal with retail outlets direct.Point-s

More disruption in the tyre World ahead of us

I must admit that I was feeling vulnerable as I was stuck out on my own in little Halifax, not knowing who was going to buy out what, just like the seventies and early eighties. The next thing to come along has been the emergence of the Giant supermarkets wanting a slice of the tyre cake.

I must confess that I have embraced the chance of earning extra profit by fitting for these companies, but I have a feeling that we may be “bitten in the bum” by these companies. The latest rumor that I picked up at the Point-S conference was that the Tesco/Blackcirces combination were going to turn some Tesco sites into tyre fitting operations, similar to Costco’s operations(as an update Michelin tyres have now bought Blackcircles).

If this is a fact then I fear that it will start a new round of competition from the big tyre companies, all jostling to keep up their tyre numbers. I meanwhile think that I have made a good move by joining the excellent Point-S organisation and we are now once again after many years dealing with the big five manufacturers, with all the benefits that brings with it.

point-s

point s sign in belgium

As I said earlier we tyre guys are tough and I am sure that whatever is thrown at us we will struggle until these things disruptions pass, and we see better days again.

MOT Testing

Don’t be a victim of #car service ##mot test#myths! Take control & understand exactly what your vehicle may call for: http://t.co/Ohj6bdZXuX

eric roberts‘s insight:

When do you have your car service? mot testing

Many of the customers who come to my garage. For their car serviced. Choose one method and that is to have their car serviced. Of course, when it is presented to us for the annual MOT test.

This is the option that many motorists prefer. The reason is that the cost of having any repairs carried out. Hence, if the car fails the MOT test. Servicing means that their car should be road worthy. At least for another year and all the costs come on a one time basis.

Some drivers will have their MOT test carried out and spend their money on the repair work only to find that other problems occur later on in the year. One problem that seems to manifest itself over and over again is the brakes. On an MOT test the brakes are tested on a rolling road and are gauged on their road worthiness by the efficiency reading of the brake tester. The problem is that this does not include a visual inspection of the drums and discs and a car may pass the test but only have a few months wear left on the pads and shoes.

mot test sign Many of our customers have then to pay more money out later on in the year when their brake shoes or pads wear down to the metal and often cause damage to the discs at the same time. I think that eventually we will be able to remove the wheels to give a better visual report on the condition of the whole braking system.

MOT Testing

MOT Testing

This is why many of our customers will opt for a service. At the same time as their MOT test. It gets everything out of the way .Making for a much safer car and a better maintained car. Some drivers will rely on the service manual that came with their car for servicing  and when the car has been serviced we stamp their service manual to show that the car has had a full service history carried out for when they sell their car on.

The worse ones are the ones that do not have a service at all, that is until something goes drastically wrong. These are the ones who swear blind that they had the car serviced earlier on in the year, but when we check our computer it was indeed two years ago. You can tell the ones, their brakes start grinding and their car won’t pull properly, because the engine has no oil in it, or the filter is completely blocked with age, this is a special problem with diesel engine cars and is a different story.

In the long run people who do not service their cars have to pay out more because they usually have more damage done to the car caused by not having a service.
