New Diesel particulate filters Law-2014- makes Even more important to use the correct Oil

New Diesel particulate filters Law

New Diesel particulate filters Law

Oil helps in reducing vehicle emissionsNew Diesel particulate filters Law

New laws are making car manufacturers vastly reduce the emissions of new models that they produce. One of the ways to do this is by fitting complicated exhaust after treatment units to their cars. It means that new low SAPS oil must be used to protect these units. New laws will be coming out in 2014 to reduce the emissions even further. For further reading  follow “Diesel net“.

Another large change that is now becoming more common is the development of the “extended service intervals”, this means that the car owner needs to use special long life oils must be used to meet the extra demands of the longer service intervals. Most service centers will have the computer technology to state the exact oil that the car requires, but things are becoming more difficult for the DIY motorists amongst us.

New Diesel particulate filters Law; Indeed by using the wrong oil in your car can cost you around £2500

For a new engine unit, this the average cost of a family sized saloon engine replacement. I am not trying to scaremonger, but the stuff in your engine is becoming more critical. The number of 5W-30 oil types now used on modern cars has increased dramatically; this is because of the number of reasons introduced by the car manufacturers.

Any motorist getting this wrong will end up in trouble and possibly a large bill.It is now getting more important to have your vehicle serviced at a reputable service center, even an engine service will be better than nothing, do not forget good service centers will have all the help from the oil companies to make sure that they get the correct product for their car. The wrong oil will block up your diesel particulate filter or poison your three-way catalytic converter, all at a terrible cost. Also do not forget to get the correct oil mix, for example, synthetic or semi-synthetic oils, or even diesel or petrol oils, all have different properties, so if in doubt have your car serviced by professionals, and don’t take the risk of a damaged engine.

Pellon Auto Centre in Halifax offers to service at excellent rates.

Timing Belt Needs Changing Sir? the dreaded words from your mechanic?

Change your  Timing Belt it’s imperative?

When our customers are having a service to their car, there are certain things that we will report to them when their cars service is complete. What we do which is what most garages do

timing belt

This Ford Fiesta cylinder head was badly damaged because the timing belt broke when the car engine was running.

nowadays, is to take a contact number of the person who’s car it is having a service. Before mobile phones this would have been more difficult to do, but now most of our customers have some sort of mobile phone or other.

The things we report on are such things as tyres or worn steering parts, these can be changed later on in the day if the customer is contacted and we will have time to carry out the repairs. One important thing though is the Timing or cam belt. The Timing Belt Kits come in two types ,the chain type, which as the word say’s is very similar to a motor bike chain and a rubber looking belt, that looks very similar to a fan belt or the belt that drives your washing machine or spin dryer.

This is made out of very strong material similar to the materials that tyres are made from. The importance of the timing belt cannot be overstressed. If the belt breaks in use then the engine can be damaged beyond repair. When we carry out a service we always check in the Autodata online manual, for the exact time for the belt to be changed. Sometimes it will state a Timing Belt Intervals and other times it may state a time period, but usually it will be between 60000miles and 100000 miles when the new belt should be fitted.

This is also important to know if you buy a second hand car. I have known customers who have had a car for a couple of months and their timing belt has snapped leaving them with a

timing belt

Timing Belt showing fitment on the pulleys

blown up engine and no redress from the person that they bought the Old Cars from, so if you buy a second hand car you must only buy one with a history record and the knowledge of the timing belt, otherwise you could be caught out with a huge repair bill, always ask about the timing belt?

A simple explanation of what this important part does is as follows; the timing belt is used to turn the camshaft at exactly half the speed of the crankshaft. Your camshaft controls the opening and closing of the valves in time to the pistons going up and down the engines cylinders. The camshaft belt runs on pulleys at the end of each important part and very often also drives the water pump. Should the belt break; then all these other parts simply smash into each, other causing major damage to the car’s engine.

The timing belt is spinning at tremendous speed and generates much heat,

so the belt is subject to many pressures and eventually starts to break up and cracking starts to appear, once again very similar to tyres. Perhaps you can see now why it is so important to change the belt at the correct time, we also recommend that you change the water pump at the same time. The water pump runs on a bearing and the bearings tend to wear out at the same time. If the water pump is not changed and goes at a later date then the garage will have all the same work to carry out all over again.

Many different companies makes of timing belt but we prefer to use Unipart belts, because as a Unipart Car Care Centre, our customers are covered under a warranty should anything go wrong with the part or the fitting of your new belt. You will be covered across the whole of the mainland UK, under the terms of the warranty a great protection to have.

So to finalise if your garage warns you that the timing belt is due for a change well get it done as soon as you can afford to, before the thing breaks and causes much more damage to the car and to your wallet or purse.

Failing Brakes

Failing Brakes-Lack Of Car Servicing Could lead To problems with your cars brakes ?

Failing Brakes

Many cars are now having a bad  experience

Of driving your car along the road only to find that when you apply the Failing Brakes,

you hear a tremendous “grinding”noise problems

Of course winter is always a bad time for our customers with brake problems. Specifically, because drivers use their brakes much more often. Especially, if the weather turns wild. Snow and ice make drivers doubly aware of the driving conditions. Consequently, they use the brakes twice as much as they would in say dry sunny summer conditions.

Eventually the brake pads will wear away. In many cases the pads wear down to the extent of wearing out altogether thus causing Failing Brakes ! Frequently, only leaving the metal part of the pads in tack. Of course this is the time when the grinding noise can be first heard by the driver. So, causing panic as this is often accompanied by brake warning lights illuminating on the cab dashboard !

Drivers panic !

So, the noise comes from the metal part of the worn out pads grinding on the metal brake discs eventual causing Failing Brakes. Resulting in the horrific noise when the brakes are applied. Significantly, this happens many times and We are now finding that we are seen an increase in drivers calling into our Halifax garage with this problem. With with Failing Brakes that are rattling and banging. Many of our customers are lady drivers (about 60% we estimate).

Not being sexist but the lady drivers do appear to panic more when this bad brake experience happens. Finding out that when you apply the brakes. Then you can hear a tremendous “grinding”noise. As a result, coming from your car. This can be a harrowing and frightening experience. Especially, to a first time driver.Failing Brakes

When this happens all the customer wants to do is stop their car. Of course and then, getting it to a garage as soon as possible. As I have siad earlier, these days as well as the noise, then a warning light will illuminate. Hence, on the dash-board. Making the experience twice as daunting.

Customers just want their vehicle putting right !

So, in really severe cases of total brake failure, then a recovery is often required. Drivers just dont want to drive their cars that are making such a terrible noise. So, the cars are just left with us to do whatever is needed to make their vehicles roadworthy again ! The cost of the repairs does not seem to be a problem. Because, this important part of the car and the brakes must be fixed at all cost.

Why let the brakes get to this stage ?

This is the bit that I don’t understand ! I believe  that the main reason for the customer grinding brake problem is a lack of car servicing. Thus allowing their cars to become  beyond the stage of proper safety levels (when the pads are completely worn down and they become metal on metal with the Discs). Dangerously, this problem occurs mainly because the vehicle had not been serviced the year before.

Customers now lead very busy lives ! So, it is not surprising when we tell them that their car has not been serviced for over two years. I must admit that I am in this bracket ! Consequently, because of a missed service then parts that need replacing such as brake pads . So, are neglected and wear out causing the grinding problem. Customers do not usually miss servicing on purpose !

So, there was a time when our customers would miss a service for financial reasons. In recent years we have found that this has become less of a problem. Money is much easier to access, so important things such as servicing their car has become less of a problem.

Missing a service is false economy !

However a modern safe guard has become the annual MOT Test. Expressly, the modern way is to have a service when the vehicle is in for its annual MOT test. So, to help drivers, many garages like ourselves. Offer a service and MOT package that is in the financial reach of most card drivers. Of course, this package ensures that things that could be missed due to neglect can be spotted  and put to rights.

Including the cars braking system. When the brake pads  are not completely worn down then we can advise the car owners and they can be changed before the dreaded grinding noise emanates.

So, when the car is in fir a service/MOT, and we find that the  Brake Pads are getting low. Then we report back to the client with an advisory. Of course with the permission of the car owner ! The parts will be changed on the service making the car safe again, and up to scratch. If the owner does not have their vehicle serviced and the Failing Brakes are neglected, then the problem of low pads will then be spread to the other parts, namely the brake discs.

Failing Brakes

The ladies BMW Mini having the brakes repaired after servicing

Of course, other brake problems could also occur. Including, seized up brake calipers, or leaking brake cylinders and damaged ABS warning wires.

Failing Brakes problems could have been avoided.

As an example to what I was saying earlier in the article! One lady customer brought her BMW Mini in to us with a  Brakes problem. Closely examining the Mini we found that she required discs and pads on the front. Including a set of pads on the rear. The lady could not understand this ! Explaining that she we had only just serviced the car a couple of months previously.

Much surprised! We subsequently, checked the records on our computer system. She was horrified to find that the last service was carried out 18 months ago ! Time had flown by and she had missed her annual service completely. Needless to say that she apologised, paid her bill and went on her way. Of course ,we do send out reminders to our customers, but it had slipped her mind.

I do believe that motorists are becoming more aware and educated about the need for regular car servicing as a preventative measure to Failing Brakes. Especially before the dreaded grinding brake scenario occurs!

European Union Car Servicing-2010 E.U. Rules about garage working practices?

 Post Updated 1st Jan 2014/25th march 2016

European Union Car Servicing; Equality was the key word for car servicing

European Union Car Servicing

European Union Car Servicing

European Union Car Servicing were up for renewal in May 2010. The standards were all about setting out the rules to take into account the huge amount of trade competition in the automotive industry markets for the way that a fair distribution of new motor vehicles and technology and their prospective replacement parts, and for the fair provisions for the car servicing (Car Service Costs) , repair and maintenance sectors of the common market. This is part of the scheme to protect smaller auto companies from getting unfairly treated regarding the flow of information freely from the car makers to the rest of the car sector.

The markets for competition for new cars was thought to be healthy in the new car sector but the garage repair and for spare parts distribution was not as intense, This is meant a danger to motorists who could be harmed by anti-competitive practices that would push up repair bills. The car servicing and garage Repair industry are very valuable for motorists if it was not for the EU rule the price of car servicing would go sky high, as much as 40% (predicted by the EU)

Many motorists are already feeling the effect of increasing car servicing and repair costs because of rising oil costs and the existing recession, they are more price-sensitive and tend to own much older cars that need more regular car servicing. The EU have put in place a much stricter set of rules to govern these automotive markets that will make it easier to enforce the new regulations. One of the problems that were a specific issue was that car makers were holding back technical information and not releasing some of the specific parts to the aftermarket, and also refusing to honour car warranties because motorists were having their vehicles repaired at independent garages, and not the main dealers where the cars were bought.

Independent garage facilities and repairers are very important because they give a better choice to motorists and keep the cost of services and repairs very competitive by placing pressure on the car manufacturers main dealers and authorised repair networks. Independent service centre has been set up to give the independent garages a nationwide service to their customers, one of the best being Unipart Car Care Centres (UCCC) for short.

It is also very important that garages can get the technical information necessary to do the repairs and carry out the work on increasingly sophisticated cars with increasing amounts of equipment, due to stricter emission and greener controls, this to me is what is not happening, we at Pellon auto centre here in Halifax are forever coming across new fault codes in the engine management systems that our machines can not correct, because the car manufacturers have so called updated them, they are always moving the gate posts to try to outfox us and our computers. Most garages are buying new diagnostic machines and computer-based analytic equipment that can plug into the database of most cars computer systems. Because of the new European Union Car Servicing directive, the majority of new cars coming onto the market will be able to be serviced at independent garages and auto centres, such as Unipart (UCCC).

The other European Union Car Servicing rules are the parts used in servicing are compatible with the manufacturers and main dealer components, for example, an oil filter must be of the same quality as a manufactures oil filter. This is now carried out at most independent garages, we always use equal quality parts or we use parts from the main dealers themselves, most service parts are actually made by the same company that supplies the car manufacturers, a good example is LUK clutches. They make clutches both for the replacement market and the car makers.

Are the new rules working for the car servicing sector ?

The new rules will help to enforce the competition for the independent garage, auto centre, and parts outlets. They are designed to help create a level playing field between the replacement car section and the car manufacturers, which will help drive down the cost of servicing the community of Europe and the UK.

This ruling is now two years old and although things appear to be going to plan, the speed of the development of EV cars is outstripping the rules on sharing the technology from the manufacturers. One example is the advent of the Li-On batteries fitted to the electric cars. These batteries are now Leased to the car owners when they buy a new car. Is this how the car makers are going to get around the European Union Car Servicing laws, in my opinion I think it is ?.

SQUEAKING BRAKES- What can cause rattling and noisy brake sounds?

SQUEAKING BRAKES

Most motorists have suffered from Squeaking brakes but what is it??

Some cars develop the SQUEAKING BRAKES problem. Thus, during normal motoring. Therefore, sometimes this is will occur when new brake pads have recently been fitted.

Squeaking brakes

Excellent new discs on this BMW cured the Squeaking brakes problem

The first thing we do at Pellon Autocentre. Is to remove all the wheels for close inspection. If the brakes have not been serviced recently we inspect each set of brakes.Hence, to look for any problems with the wear of the pads or shoes. We then check the other parts.Naturally, for incorrect fitting or for any damage that may have taken place. Sometimes the customer has had cheap ones fitted. Thus, causing dust to clog up the pads and become noisy or squeaky.

If nothing visible can be found, we would install new pads, only using the pads that are recommended for that model of car and the highest quality. Indeed because of the Squeaking Brakes Pads problem in the first instance we would use the original equipment pads from the main dealers. We at Pellon are a Unipart Service Centre and so use Unipart brake parts, and although these parts are of the highest quality, there are occasions then it is necessary to use the original equipment parts for excellent customer service this usually solves the problem especially for problem pads such as premature wear or indeed Squeaking brakes.

SQUEAKING BRAKES

If the problem persists, we may have to look at fitting pads with a higher carbon content although this is most unusual. Another issue could be the brake shims that fit between the pads and the callipers. The squeaky brakes problem can be cured by removing the shims and clean them thoroughly before giving them a coating of brake grease and then refitting them to the car; this job should be done at regular services so as not to cause future problems.

This will cure a noise often caused by the Car Brakes pads vibrating against the calliper during braking; this is usually heard by the driver as a squeak

We at Pellon consider you brakes as critical; any work carried out on the brakes should only be performed by professionals. We often find that when Disc Brakes are done by the DIY motorists things like brake squeaks often occur.

Catalytic Converter Care-Regular Car Servicing can help look after your Cat

What do prisoners use to call each other?
Cell phones.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER CARE; Why does car servicing affect your Cat?

Catalytic Converter care

Catalytic Converter care

This is an interesting point; I suppose that regular car maintenance has an effect on all your car parts in the end. Your Catalytic Converter care, (CAT) is a crucial part of your vehicle. Therefore, is fitted with your engine and the rest of the exhaust system. Thus, some are attached to the manifold, onto the engine, these are known as manifold cats, and some are fitted at the end of a short front pipe on the rest of the exhaust system.

Bigger models of cars sometimes require two cats, cars such as BMWs and MERCs usually have two cats fitted, (very expensive to replace).Catalytic Converter care

Your cat’s primary job is to clean the engine particles that the engine omits. Catalytic converters are made out of ceramic. Thus, with added precious metals (another reason why Catalytic Converter care is critical). Naturally to filter the dirty particles from your engine. Thus reducing the pollutants from entering the atmosphere, this helps us to clean the environment and is part of the UK MOT test.

Catalytic Converter Care

Your cat will only work correctly if the engine operates with the correct ratio of air to fuel. Naturally, this was your car servicing comes in. aged.

Right to Repair Law- Could Brexit Affect our Right to repair Laws?

Right to Repair Law

Right to Repair Law;The European unions block exemption rules regarding “garage servicing” came up for revue in May 2010.

The reform was all about setting new rules to take into account the intensity of competition on the markets for the distribution of motor vehicles and spare parts. Also for the provision of repair and maintenance services. It covers cars, trucks and buses, and all types of garage small or large.

The Commission found that competition in the market for the sale of new vehicles is strong. In this light, the current sector-specific rules create an unnecessary straitjacket that prevents

Right to Repair Law

right to repair symbol

car manufacturers from organising their distribution systems as they see fit. The European Commission has therefore aligned the rules applicable to motor vehicle distribution. This applies with those that apply to distribution agreements in other sectors but with a three-year transition period to allow dealers to adapt to the new measures.

Right to Repair Law

Competition on the markets for repair and maintenance and for spare parts distribution is less intense. This is a risk to consumers who may be harmed by anti-competitive practices. This could push up Car Repair Costs when Servicing a Car. The garage Repair and maintenance industry is very important for consumers. Not only for reasons of safety and reliability. But also because repair bills account for 40% of the total cost to car owners. Unlike car prices, the cost of the average repair job and  servicing has actually risen over the past years.

Consumers are feeling the effect of rising repair bills. This also includes  servicing costs during the present crisis. They are more price-sensitive and drive older vehicles that require more regular maintenance. The EU Commission has put in place a tougher regime for these markets. They will make it easier to enforce the rules. Particular problematic issues include holding back technical information and not releasing spare parts, and refusing to honour warranties when consumers have their cars repaired at independent garage servicing facilities.

Independent garages and repairers such as Pellonautocentre are important because they give more choice to consumers. This helps to keep the price of  servicing and repairs competitive by putting pressure due to competitive pricing against main dealers. Also to  authorised repair networks. But for this to happen it is essential that garages can get the

car servicing

car servicing costs would remain stable

technical information necessary to do the repairs and carry out the work on increasingly sophisticated cars with increasing amounts of technology.

Right to Repair Law

Withholding “technical information” will be dealt with directly under the EU Treaty rules on restrictive business practices (Article 101) since. The manufacturers , spare parts and repair shops generally have a larger market share in excess of 30%. In addition, Guidelines also being brought in contain detailed clarifications. As to the notion of technical information, cross-referring to Regulation 715/2007 on type approval of certain cars and all subsequent implementing regulations.

New rules will assure that garage servicing companies have access to technical information for models which are type-approved after 1 September 2009. By making a clear link with the 2007 car type-approvals Regulation. The EU Commission will ensure both consistency as regards access to technical information. For cars put in circulation before that date and allow the presentation of technical information to evolve and continue in line with technical progress.

The EU Commission remains committed to vigorously enforce the rules on access to technical information. This was demonstrated in four cases brought in 2007. This was to ensure that car manufacturers disclose the necessary information to independent repairers and garage servicing facilities. Garages the likes of Pellonautocentre.in the Calderdale area of West Yorkshire.

Right to Repair Law

By strengthening the enforcement of competition rules. Including the garage servicing sector and maintenance and spare parts markets. These new laws will contribute to creating a level playing field between car manufacturers and spare part producers and garage servicing.  Thus contribute to lower prices for spare parts. This has to be very good news for the garage servicing , garage repair and spare parts industry. This result must give great pride. To all the different groups and individuals that spent hard earned money lobbying and writing to their EU and local Mps. These new laws are similar to the “right to repair” laws in the USA.

The new “Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulation“,  will continue to help lower the cost of” GARAGE SERVICING”for 13 years until 2023.

The EU Commission will constantly monitor the situation in the markets for motor vehicle and spare parts distribution, as well as in the market for the provision of repair and maintenance services including garage servicing companies. The EU Commission will also monitor the application of the Regulation, in cooperation with National Competition Authorities and stakeholders. Once again the UK garage and motor industry can continue to work hard and give the public the service and competitive pricing they deserve.

Eric Roberts Pellon Tyre and Autocentre thinks that the Right to Repair Law, coming from the EU will be kept when our government decides on which legislation to keep and throw out.

Car Servicing Importance- Regular Servicing Could Also Save You Further Costs ?

Car Servicing Importance

Car Servicing Importance

The best way to compare the price of “car servicing”for your car is to look for all the right things when the time comes for your car servicing.

In these times of recession it is very tempting to skip on your car servicing, but in my opinion the very least you should, is to have an “engine service”, especially if your car has a diesel

Car Servicing Importance

Brakes are the first to suffer from not having your car serviced

engine.

A good example of this is your braking system. Many customers of ours skip car servicing only to find out that there brake pads that needed changing. This has now turned into not just pads but “discs and Pads”. This means that the pads would have been picked up as “very low” on a regular service. Would only costing perhaps £30, have been allowed to wear out causing damage to the metal discs and now costing £130.

This also applies to the other parts on your car. Regular car servicing will pick up faults, that may have just started to wear out and by catching the fault early. This will not spread to other parts causing much larger problems at a later date.

By missing out on your “car servicing” your are storing up “problems” that may occur in the future. One of things that we recommend in these hard times, is to ask your service centre to give your car an “engine service” when your car has its next MOT test.

The lights, steering and brakes will all be checked on the MOT. You will then be notified by the testing station if any failures need attention. If the car passes then you can have an engine service, usually your “OIL and FILTER”changing, now knowing that your car will be in decent condition.

Car Servicing Importance

Car Lights Missing-it is important to check your lights to make sure that you can be seen.

Car Lights Missing

Have you noticed all the “one eyed monster” with car lights missing

With the nights now getting visibly darker. Then it is just as well that we have well lit roads and well-lit highways. Generally, this is very important. We have probably one of the best after dark road light systems in the developed world.  Car lights are a safety critical aspect of motoring. But it seems that more and more cars are driving on our roads with lights out.

I have often noticed that cars on the continent. Especially France drive about all the time with on or more of their  car lights not working. of course, the cars in France have a slight excuse. Because they only have an Car Lights MissingMOT every two years. Although, this is no excuse ! firstly, because of the safety concerns. Developing  by having car lights out.

I call them “ one-eyed monsters”. Secondly, I feel that drivers have NO excuse for driving about in the dark without the full compliment of light bulbs in working order. Your car lights play a vital role in the safety of your vehicle and indeed other road users including pedestrians.

It is paramount that you check your lights all the time especially in the winter time.

We at Pellon auto centre . Cannot believe the number of cars that are failing the MOT test. Because of light bulbs that are defective. I can not believe the number of cars that I have seen driving along the M62 motorway of poor visibility such as heavy rain or even fog with a head light off; it is entirely irresponsible.

These days many car manufacturers are fitting light bulb warning lights to alert the motorist that a bulb is out this is a great step forward, and it will be a much safer World when all cars have these sensors fitted.

Car Lights Missing;Remember to get your car lights checked out every week there is no excuse its dangerous

Motorcodes Membership- Give garages a better standard and Excellent Control for consumer satisfaction

Motorcodes Membership

Motorcodes Membership

The UK authorities that regulate garage services and repairs here in the UK.Thus, have at last come up with a better way to control bad practice throughout the UK motor industry. Many systems were implicated in trying to regulate garage services.Including, repairers and car sales outlets for un- lawful practices. But this did not stop dodgy traders from breaking the rules. So and taking their customers to the cleaners.hence,  by not carrying out the correct repairs or not doing the work they were expected to do. Some garages were supposed to conduct garage services, but Motorcodes Membershipnever even touched the car, a complete rip off.

Most people have heard of horror stories. Therefore, the motor industry has had bad press. I personally as an “honest” garage owner do not think this will ever change.I think there will always be dodgy dealers in the motor trade.Consequently, willing to rip people off. Motorcodes will help ease this problem with higher standards set for the garage business.

Over the years many different organisations have come formed trying to regulate the garage trade. But it seems that their members are always joined by the same, ” Good garages“. The majority of garages and car dealers and auto centres are honest and genuine people, who are just out to earn a decent living. Especially in the private sector.

Motorcodes Membership

Most garage owners are very hard working individuals. Thus, who run their businesses honestly. Hence, offering the “local community” an excellent and honest deal on garage services.  One of the first “regulatory bodies” to control garages. Was “Trading Standards”. Garages who joined could attend meetings at a local facilities. Therefore, to discuss ways and means to offer a better garage services, but this did not stop the bad guys, as they only did not join, I think though that this was a move in the right direction.

However due to the recession. Because of the Government cut backs in the nineties. This scheme was scrapped to be, and other private organisation sprung up, These were driven by companies that were also promoting garage services products, such as oils and other engine products, in other words, you had to buy their goods to be in the club. In my opinion, this was not a satisfactory situation, and many of these schemes fell by the wayside.

“Motorcodes Membership” is a better system that helps to create an improved image for the motor trade and garage services, this time, I have a feeling it will be more successful.

To check out your local “MOTORCODES” garage log onto www.motorcodes.co.uk or in West Yorkshire www.pellonautocentre.com
