I must admit that in most of my years as a garage owner then customer satisfaction ratings were never known. Of course up to the advent of the modern computers then there was no such things as ratings fro your customers. So its become a thing of the future! And why not. Importantly, it is one of the best indicators that your business is doing well. Whatever type of product or service that you are selling.

Another happy positive is that when you have high ratings then its no coincidence that your business will be thriving. Anyhow thats my experience! Consequences, also set out other parameters, that give will the thriving business the best results. In my opinion number one factor is having the right staff. Especially when in the garage situation.

Garage owners just dont get it !

Of course the  garages of today have got a lot to thank for the starting of the “Kwik-Fit” era. Coming out of an American idea from the infamous Tommy Farmer, then fast fits brought the garage industry into the 21st century. Incidentally we do still have the dirty back street type of garages and scruffy second hand tyre shops for all to see. However the garages that prosper will have all the right mixtures of ideas and cleanliness that the modern driver s are looking for. This also reflects on the particular garage businesses ratings of customer satisfaction.

These days of consumerism mean that we all have to try harder, be more polite and generally “bend over backwards”. So to keep our ratings high. Consumers are very savvy  and will freely give a business a good review. Strangely enough there does not seam to be a middle of the road review! At least not with us at Pellon Autocentre. Most reviews are in fact 5 stars which is excellent for us. However, we get the odd customer who will give us just a 1 star rating.

I must confess that I used to hate this. Although very rare then it is all part of system. We will never please everybody! Now I take the time to look into this. So, when we receive a low rating then I now investigate the poor result. Then first thing that hits me is that my excellent staff always know about the circumstances. I truly believe that there is a certain type of person who is never going to be happy.

Whatever and wherever they go, these people are trouble.

So, I know before I say anything that my staff know exactly what has happened. Believe me or not it is always the customer that has caused the problem leading to them giving us a 1 star rating. Importantly, we do make mistakes! After all we are only human. But a good garage will handle any problem in the correct manner. Always changing a possible bad situation into a good outcome. This includes all our garage services and products. Including tyres and associated services. and MOT testing.

Finally we do have good reviews on Google and Facebook. But in my opinion our online tyre portal www.pellontyres.co.uk is the most accurate and is not open to any low score abuse from “keyboard warriors”. Subsequently, trying to knock your reputation by giving a false low score. Bellow I have published our excellent results and would like to thank our great customers. So, for taking the time and energy to give us the results that all businesses dream about.

Many cars are now having a bad  experience

Of driving your car along the road only to find that when you apply the Failing Brakes,

you hear a tremendous “grinding”noise problems

Of course winter is always a bad time for our customers with brake problems. Specifically, because drivers use their brakes much more often. Especially, if the weather turns wild. Snow and ice make drivers doubly aware of the driving conditions. Consequently, they use the brakes twice as much as they would in say dry sunny summer conditions.

Eventually the brake pads will wear away. In many cases the pads wear down to the extent of wearing out altogether thus causing Failing Brakes ! Frequently, only leaving the metal part of the pads in tack. Of course this is the time when the grinding noise can be first heard by the driver. So, causing panic as this is often accompanied by brake warning lights illuminating on the cab dashboard !

So, the noise comes from the metal part of the worn out pads grinding on the metal brake discs eventual causing Failing Brakes. Resulting in the horrific noise when the brakes are applied. Significantly, this happens many times and We are now finding that we are seen an increase in drivers calling into our Halifax garage with this problem. With with Failing Brakes that are rattling and banging. Many of our customers are lady drivers (about 60% we estimate).

Not being sexist but the lady drivers do appear to panic more when this bad brake experience happens. Finding out that when you apply the brakes. Then you can hear a tremendous “grinding”noise. As a result, coming from your car. This can be a harrowing and frightening experience. Especially, to a first time driver.Failing Brakes

When this happens all the customer wants to do is stop their car. Of course and then, getting it to a garage as soon as possible. As I have siad earlier, these days as well as the noise, then a warning light will illuminate. Hence, on the dash-board. Making the experience twice as daunting.

Customers just want their vehicle putting right !

So, in really severe cases of total brake failure, then a recovery is often required. Drivers just dont want to drive their cars that are making such a terrible noise. So, the cars are just left with us to do whatever is needed to make their vehicles roadworthy again ! The cost of the repairs does not seem to be a problem. Because, this important part of the car and the brakes must be fixed at all cost.

Why let the brakes get to this stage ?

This is the bit that I don’t understand ! I believe  that the main reason for the customer grinding brake problem is a lack of car servicing. Thus allowing their cars to become  beyond the stage of proper safety levels (when the pads are completely worn down and they become metal on metal with the Discs). Dangerously, this problem occurs mainly because the vehicle had not been serviced the year before.

Customers now lead very busy lives ! So, it is not surprising when we tell them that their car has not been serviced for over two years. I must admit that I am in this bracket ! Consequently, because of a missed service then parts that need replacing such as brake pads . So, are neglected and wear out causing the grinding problem. Customers do not usually miss servicing on purpose !

So, there was a time when our customers would miss a service for financial reasons. In recent years we have found that this has become less of a problem. Money is much easier to access, so important things such as servicing their car has become less of a problem.

Missing a service is false economy !

However a modern safe guard has become the annual MOT Test. Expressly, the modern way is to have a service when the vehicle is in for its annual MOT test. So, to help drivers, many garages like ourselves. Offer a service and MOT package that is in the financial reach of most card drivers. Of course, this package ensures that things that could be missed due to neglect can be spotted  and put to rights.

Including the cars braking system. When the brake pads  are not completely worn down then we can advise the car owners and they can be changed before the dreaded grinding noise emanates.

So, when the car is in fir a service/MOT, and we find that the  Brake Pads are getting low. Then we report back to the client with an advisory. Of course with the permission of the car owner ! The parts will be changed on the service making the car safe again, and up to scratch. If the owner does not have their vehicle serviced and the Failing Brakes are neglected, then the problem of low pads will then be spread to the other parts, namely the brake discs.

Of course, other brake problems could also occur. Including, seized up brake calipers, or leaking brake cylinders and damaged ABS warning wires.

As an example to what I was saying earlier in the article! One lady customer brought her BMW Mini in to us with a  Brakes problem. Closely examining the Mini we found that she required discs and pads on the front. Including a set of pads on the rear. The lady could not understand this ! Explaining that she we had only just serviced the car a couple of months previously.

Much surprised! We subsequently,checked the records on our computer system. She was horrified to find that the last service was carried out 18 months ago ! Time had flown by and she had missed her annual service completely. Needless to say that she apologised, paid her bill and went on her way. Of course ,we do send out reminders to our customers, but it had slipped her mind.

I do believe that motorists are becoming more aware and educated about the need for regular car servicing as a preventative measure to Failing Brakes. Especially before the dreaded grinding brake scenario occurs!

European Union Car Servicing were up for renewal in May 2010. The standards were all about setting out the rules. Consequently, to take into account the huge amount of trade competition. Of course, in the automotive industry markets for the way that a fair distribution of new motor vehicles. Including, technology and their prospective replacement parts, and for the fair provisions for the car servicing (Car Service Costs). Repair and maintenance sectors of the common market. This is part of the scheme to protect smaller auto companies. Subsequently, from getting unfairly treated regarding the flow of information freely. Of course, from the car makers to the rest of the car sector.

The markets for competition for new cars was thought to be healthy in the new car sector. But the garage repair and for spare parts distribution was not as intense. This is meant a danger to motorists who could be harmed by anti-competitive practices. Importantly, that would push up repair bills. The car servicing and garage Repair industry are very valuable for motorists if it was not for the EU rule the price of car servicing would go sky high, as much as 40% (predicted by the EU)

Because of rising oil costs and the existing recession. So they are more price-sensitive. Tending to own much older cars that need more regular car servicing. The EU have put in place a much stricter set of rules. Governing these automotive markets that will make it easier to enforce the new regulations. One of the problems that were a specific issue. Of course, was that car makers were holding back technical information. Not releasing some of the specific parts to the aftermarket. Including, also refusing to honour car warranties. Because motorists were having their vehicles repaired at independent garages. Not the main dealers where the cars were bought.

Independent garage facilities and repairers are very important. Because they give a better choice to motorists. Keeping the cost of services and repairs very competitive. So, by placing pressure on the car manufacturers, Including, main dealers and authorized repair networks. Independent service centre has been set up to give the independent garages a nationwide service to their customers, one of the best being Unipart Car Care Centres (UCCC) for short.

It is also very important that garages can get the technical information necessary

 

Of course,to do the repairs and carry out the work on increasingly sophisticated cars with increasing amounts of equipment, due to stricter emission and greener controls, this to me is what is not happening, we at Pellon auto centre here in Halifax are forever coming across new fault codes in the engine management systems that our machines can not correct, because the car manufacturers have so called updated them, they are always moving the gate posts to try to outfox us and our computers. Most garages are buying new diagnostic machines and computer-based analytic equipment that can plug into the database of most cars computer systems. Because of the new European Union Car Servicing directive, the majority of new cars coming onto the market will be able to be serviced at independent garages and auto centres, such as Unipart (UCCC).

The other European Union Car Servicing rules are the parts used in servicing are compatible with the manufacturers and main dealer components, for example, an oil filter must be of the same quality as a manufactures oil filter. This is now carried out at most independent garages, we always use equal quality parts or we use parts from the main dealers themselves, most service parts are actually made by the same company that supplies the car manufacturers, a good example is LUK clutches. They make clutches both for the replacement market and the car makers.

Are the new rules working for the car servicing sector ?

 The new rules will help to enforce the competition for the independent garage, auto centre, and parts outlets. They are designed to help create a level playing field between the replacement car section and the car manufacturers, which will help drive down the cost of servicing the community of Europe and the UK.

This ruling is now two years old and although things appear to be going to plan, the speed of the development of EV cars is outstripping the rules on sharing the technology from the manufacturers. One example is the advent of the Li-On batteries fitted to the electric cars. These batteries are now Leased to the car owners when they buy a new car. Is this how the car makers are going to get around the European Union Car Servicing laws, in my opinion I think it is ?.

So it is really important to learn about the reason for your cars engine warning to come on. Of course many times are a false alarm. However I know from personnel experience that it is likely to be very important and should be checked out as soon as possible.

The reform was all about setting new rules to take into account the intensity of competition on the markets for the distribution of motor vehicles and spare parts. Also for the provision of repair and maintenance services. It covers cars, trucks and buses, and all types of garage small or large.

The Commission found that competition in the market for the sale of new vehicles is strong. In this light, the current sector-specific rules create an unnecessary straitjacket that prevents

car manufacturers from organising their distribution systems as they see fit. The European Commission has therefore aligned the rules applicable to motor vehicle distribution. This applies with those that apply to distribution agreements in other sectors but with a three-year transition period to allow dealers to adapt to the new measures.

Competition on the markets for repair and maintenance and for spare parts distribution is less intense. This is a risk to consumers who may be harmed by anti-competitive practices. This could push up Car Repair Costs when Servicing a Car. The garage Repair and maintenance industry is very important for consumers. Not only for reasons of safety and reliability. But also because repair bills account for 40% of the total cost to car owners. Unlike car prices, the cost of the average repair job and  servicing has actually risen over the past years.

Consumers are feeling the effect of rising repair bills. This also includes  servicing costs during the present crisis. They are more price-sensitive and drive older vehicles that require more regular maintenance. The EU Commission has put in place a tougher regime for these markets. They will make it easier to enforce the rules. Particular problematic issues include holding back technical information and not releasing spare parts, and refusing to honour warranties when consumers have their cars repaired at independent garage servicing facilities.

Independent garages and repairers such as Pellonautocentre are important because they give more choice to consumers. This helps to keep the price of  servicing and repairs competitive by putting pressure due to competitive pricing against main dealers. Also to  authorised repair networks. New rules will assure that garage servicing companies have access to technical information for models which are type-approved after 1 September 2009. By making a clear link with the 2007 car type-approvals Regulation. The EU Commission will ensure both consistency as regards access to technical information. For cars put in circulation before that date and allow the presentation of technical information to evolve and continue in line with technical progress.

The EU Commission remains committed to vigorously enforce the rules on access to technical information. This was demonstrated in four cases brought in 2007. This was to ensure that car manufacturers disclose the necessary information to independent repairers and garage servicing facilities. The new “Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulation“,  will continue to help lower the cost of” GARAGE SERVICING”for 13 years until 2023.

The EU Commission will constantly monitor the situation in the markets for motor vehicle and spare parts distribution, as well as in the market for the provision of repair and maintenance services including garage servicing companies. The EU Commission will also monitor the application of the Regulation, in cooperation with National Competition Authorities and stakeholders. Once again the UK garage and motor industry can continue to work hard and give the public the service and competitive pricing they deserve.

The best way to compare the price of “car servicing”for your car is to look for all the right things when the time comes for your car servicing.

In these times of recession it is very tempting to skip on your car servicing, but in my opinion the very least you should, is to have an “engine service”, especially if your car has a diesel

A good example of this is your braking system. Many customers of ours skip car servicing only to find out that there brake pads that needed changing. This has now turned into not just pads but “discs and Pads”. This means that the pads would have been picked up as “very low” on a regular service. Would only costing perhaps £30, have been allowed to wear out causing damage to the metal discs and now costing £130.

This also applies to the other parts on your car. Regular car servicing will pick up faults, that may have just started to wear out and by catching the fault early. This will not spread to other parts causing much larger problems at a later date.

By missing out on your “car servicing” your are storing up “problems” that may occur in the future. One of things that we recommend in these hard times, is to ask your service centre to give your car an “engine service” when your car has its next MOT test.

The lights, steering and brakes will all be checked on the MOT. You will then be notified by the testing station if any failures need attention. If the car passes then you can have an engine service, usually your “OIL and FILTER”changing, now knowing that your car will be in decent condition.

So, although this is an older post it is still very relevant. Subsequently, recent times have proved that our customer base is now a well balanced mix of male and female customers!

About, how the MOT Rules works to keep your car safe and legal.When you prepare your car for the MOT test, the follow advice will apply.Especially, when dealing with wheels and tyres. The first thing to check are the wheels. As a result, if you have alloy wheels.Because, you should check for serious damage and cracks. Also, you must have a full set of wheel nuts fitted. If your car has steel wheels and plastic hub caps.Of course, the nuts will not be checked by the tester.Thus, they will only be checked if you remove the hub caps before the car is tested.

If any nuts are missing then this will result in a failure.
According to the DVLA MOT Rules. The tyre condition is very important. Testers look for any side wall damage and for any cuts or damage to the tyre tread. The tester will also check the tread depth. Using his official tread depth gauge.The legal limit is 1.6 mm across three-quarters of the tread width . This can be detected by a visual look at the tyres.Of course, before you present the car for a test. Tyre manufacturers build into the tyre treads a wear indicator bar.For when the tyre wears down to the bar a bald patch is visible. Police officers also use these bars as away of a quick check of tyre condition.Especially, when stopping a motorist for a check over.

Spare wheels and tyres are not part of the MOT test,

Tyre sizes are checked on the car on the same axle. But other information such as load ratings are not checked.Because, this is deemed as too technical. As a result, some cars may break the law. Eric Roberts MD of Pellon-auto centre has recently attended a regional meeting of Unipart Car Care Centres (UCCC). This was in a hotel in Wakefield West Yorkshire. New plans that mean that Pellon Autocentre Joins Unipart was unveiled to upgrade their new image to the garage members.

UCCC Members will be offered complete new signage. Consequently, by using Unipart’s new updated logo. This logo is very similar to the present one. Because it appeared that only a slight modification to upgrade. Eric Roberts says “The new image looks very stylish. Although there is not lots of change, the new design will look very useful. Especially, when bonded together with all the other promotional effects that will be on offer to us.

Our garages images are in the Unipart style and colours.”
Unipart will still provide their garage network with their website design service to help its individual garages build their website. This service will be subsidised by Unipart, rolling on from the old system. This offer has been taken up by over 500 garages and has become a favourite feature to the garages in the scheme.

A brand new feature will be the introduction of Ben Collins, (the former “sting” from Top Gear motoring programme on TV). Ben will be helping promote the Car Care Centres at a national and local levels, holding regular events across the country.
Another new feature will be the introduction of more training facility. Garages participating will have the use of Uniparts technical helpline and training staff support. “This Pellon Autocentre Joins Unipart service will be of great use to participating garages such as ourselves,” says Eric Roberts.
Unipart will be revamping the existing web site. This website will be fully optimised, and search engine friendly. Links to participating members websites. Furthermore, offering the partners a right online image with facilities to offer online service and MOT booking.

Furthermore, the new work-wear was also on display for the garage owners to browse over and the meeting concluded with a buffet. Unipart’s marketing director Wendy Williams conducted the meeting in a very professional manner, and it felt that all the participating centre members in attendance, were looking forward to the new changes with great anticipation.
