Frightening to think about what is going to happen when the new idea “Smart Motorways” take off! Many people don’t yet know this, but the new idea is this; when you use the new Smart Motorway and your vehicle develops a fault that causes your vehicle to loose power and stops running.

Of course, this is of no great surprise to me. So, in the trade, we refer to old tyres as “Casings”. It’s been a few years since the law clamped down on suspecting criminals who were doing anything to get rid of scrap casings. I will explain how it works. The old tyre that come of our customers car are “worthless”. When remoulding was popular, many of them were used to recycle the old casings into remoulds.

However many changes have brought an end to this in countries like the UK. Modern cars with many different tyre sizes have brought an end to car tyre remoulding. Cheap tyres from China have made remoulding into a lost cause. The remoulded tyres were costing as much as a new tyre. So it made no sense to buy remoulds when new tyres were available at a lower price.

Problems for tyre dealers

Consequently, this developed into a problem for us tyre dealers. However, companies set up to recycle the old tyres. Machines that ripped apart the old tires did this. Thus separating the rubber from the steel wire to recycle wherever possible. Rubber chippings from this process is going into the production of many new products. Including adding it to tarmac for new road building.

However, as in anything where money is concerned

criminals became involved. As a tyre retailer, we now have to pay at least £1 for every casing removed from our premises. The system was government-regulated, with various forms to fill in any time casings were removed. This worked well until the underworld became involved.

Criminals began forging documents

pretending to be legitimate casing collectors. So a truck load could easily be worth, say, £500 . The conmen would also ask for cash, which for some reason, the dealers paid. The old tyres were then disposed of in many different ways. In fact, a guy in West Yorkshire rented part of an airfield and just simply stacked the millions of old tyres on the old runway.

The pile became larger ang larger and so did the guys bank account. All his paperwork was forged and  nobody thought anything about it!

He was eventually found out and sent to prison. However, this kind of thing never went away, right up to this latest find in Scotland.

This article is in the “Impartial Report”. Demonstrating the fact that police do indeed stop drivers. As a result, are prosecuted for having illegal part worn Tyres on their cars.

Although the police are not as abundant as they used to be. Then, it is no use risking a hefty fine. Such as  the fine that this guy received. He would also of course have to buy another set of tyres . Hence, in some cases he could have also received a ban from driving . As each tyre is three points on your license.

As in the picture of the British Police. Often have roadside checks. Consequently, stopping motorists from checking the cars documents . Also, there are other important things. As a result, we have often had drivers come to us with what we call a “pink slip.”. The slip has to be taken to any MOT station . Once the defect has been corrected. Then the car is deemed as OK.

Therefore, if say the car requires two tyres. Then we will check the car again. Once the tyres have been fitted,. We then sign the slip to say that the work has been carried out. Moreover, the driver then returns to the police station .Showing the police that the defection has been rectified.Without any further prosecution.

Consequently, there is the number of our regular customers that are getting caught out. hence by buying illegal Second Hand Tyres . These tyres are deemed as legal. Especially, if they are checked out and tested with a certified suppliers stamp . But this is not usually the case.

Only the other day (late October 2014). Then, we had two customers call into us . Thus, I recently bought Second Hand Tyres. Because they had some tyre problems in a  near by town (Huddersfield). Both cases were in very similar circumstances. as a result, the first customer came to us complaining .

Because his car was making banging noises. As a result, he thought it might be his brake discs and pads. When we removed the wheels,. So check out the brakes . Then we could not find anything wrong with the cars brakes. However , with the wheels removed from the car,. We noticed a large egg shape . This  went all around the tyres tread and sidewall area.

When we told him he said that this could not be so because he had just paid £40 at a tyre dealer in Huddersfield. He then went on to say that according to the guy who sold him the tyre, then the tyre was brand new. This had only been two weeks earlier?.

So the guy had paid £40 for some second-hand tyres that lasted only two weeks? crazy. We recommended that he take the tyre back to them for a refund, but as in many of these cases, the guy felt

stupid for buying it in the first place and instead bought a proper new tyre from us for £59.90, he could not believe it for only just short of £20 he could buy a brand new tyre, wow.

Going forward in 2024, I believe that it is the younger generations that are supporting the market for second-hand tyres ! I dont know who to blame it on. Perhaps the tyre industry has papered over this problem in the past and burried their heads in the sand.

So, this comes as no surprise to me.

Part-worn tyre sellers will never be stopped unless the law clamps down on them. Not to mention that the car-owning public supports them more than ever. Of course, money has a lot to do with the problem. When times are bad, people have less money available to spend on their cars.

As a matter of fact we are entering one of the worse economic recessions on record . Of course due to the Corona Virus pandemic. Here at Pellon Autocentre we are already experiencing a rise in phone inquiries for part worn tyres. Fortunately, the price of cheap economy tyres have dropped in recent times. So, making it possible to up sell from part worn to cheap new tyres.

Another observation is the number of young people who are asking for part-worn. Unfortunately, when I speak to them, they are totally oblivious to the dangers of part worn tyres. Luckily, we find it easy to change their minds and they usually go home with some new tyres fitted to their cars.

Of course, this ban does not yet apply to car tyres

though it may be worth watching this space. It always amazes me that a law has to be introduced to stop these things from happening.

However, there are very old tyres fitted to vehicles out there, just ready to cause an accident. So, I have found that particular types of vehicles are prone to having old tyres fitted.

One that springs to mind is the caravan and trailer scenario. For some strange reason, caravan owners keep their tyres fitted the longest. Many have their caravans parked up for much of the time.

So, only travelling for their annual vacations

and actually driving the caravan and using mileage on the tyres. Many caravans do change and indeed upgrade their caravans to  better models, but many do not.

These are the ones most likely to have over-aged tyres fitted. Indeed, one tyre that we removed from a caravan wheel was a 21-year-old Michelin ZX tyre.

Of course, the telltale sign

is to look for crazy paving-type cracking in the side wall and bead area of the tyre. Tyre guys are also familiar with the tyre brands that have been introduced over the years. This is why we spotted this Michelin ZX tyre. They were, in fact, good tyres, but not that good?

Sometimes it may be great to play a damsel in distress. So, have a strong and well-toned man fix your flat tyre. Importantly,  I think every woman ought to know how to change to the spare wheel. After all, having your tyre blown is never something anyone plans. Of course, you may not have any eager boy scout waiting around to rescue you. There is no need to keep the wheel changing in a man’s domain. times are changing and you should too. It’s time to empower yourself and get ready to tackle that flat tyre !

 1. First of all, if there is a place for you to move your car out of the way,!

So, if there is a place to where you can get out of the way, then move your car there. Make sure oncoming traffic will be able to see you. Turn on your hazards and if you have a warning triangle,. Then place where it will be clearly visible. Also, make sure the place you move your vehicle to is as flat as possible. Avoid soft ground and inclines. Whenever possible, place some bricks, blocks, or large rocks. Naturally, under your car to prevent your car from rolling backwards.

2. If you have hubcaps, remove them. Flat Tyre: A Woman’s Guide

These are the covers on your wheels. Check your manual on how to remove them. I highly suggest you look at this beforehand, not when you have already blown a tyre.

3. Next, you need to remove the wheel nuts.

These are the nuts or bolts that hold your wheel in place. You will need a wheel brace to do this. Of course, the wheel brace comes in different shapes and sizes. Commonly known as a “spider.”. So, the spider wrench is the T-shaped wrench. Of course, that should be together with all your other tools. The shape of the wrench makes for easy leverage. However, if your upper-body strength is lacking, you may not have the heft or muscle needed to loosen the lug nuts. Importantly, you may have to resort to stepping on the T-arm to obtain better leverage. Always remember, left to loosen and right to tighten.

4. Now you need your car jack to raise your car. Flat Tyres A Guide for Women

Most cars have a flat plate behind the front wheels and just in front of the back ones for this purpose. Place the jack under the “jacking point” nearest to the tyre to be changed ! Raising the jack with the jack handle to meet the jacking point plate. Double check and make sure your car will be steady once it is raised. Safety is crucial whenever you are working with your car. Now raise your car about 15 cm of the ground. Don’t forget that when you re-fit an inflated spare wheel.Thus, will need room so make sure there is enough space for the spare to be placed on.

 5. by grabbing it with both hands, one on each side.

So after removing the wheel nuts!  Pull the flat wheel straight and off. Quickly line up your spare with the bolts and slide it on. Replace the lug nuts, but do not tighten them completely. When you have lowered your car, use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts in opposite pairs. Make sure these are as tight as possible! Because you absolutely do not want your tyre to come off when you start driving away.

Put all your tools together and place them back where they were stored. Always put them back in the same place so you know where to find them in case of emergencies. Knowing where all of the tools are before you get into an emergency situation is suggested. Put your flat tyre where your spare one was, and make sure to have it fixed right away.

So we all must have noticed how busy our roads are now getting. Especially, on the motorways. Recently, I had the dis-pleasure of having a tyre blowout on the M1 motorway.

Of course, it was dark and raining and was a very frightening experience. However, it is a job that I have done all my life and quickly changed the wheel at the roadside. However, it did open my mind to the thought that this would have been horrific for a lady driver to attempt this task. Simply put, it would be far better to join the “AA” “Green Flag” or “RAC“. Naturally putting your mind at rest !

 A woman alone with her car and a flat tyre could be a signal for the less-than-honourable to take advantage of the situation. If you have no recourse but to change the tyre yourself, make sure you have some form of protection nearby, like pepper spray. Also, make sure to call a friend or relative to let them know what happened when your tyre blows so someone is aware of where you are and the situation you are in. This will at least give people you know information of your whereabouts.

9, Having your tyres in good condition is one way to avoid a flat tyre.

While some causes, like a puncture from a nail or other sharp object, cannot be avoided,. So, keep your tyres well inflated. Along with careful driving, it will lessen the chances of your having to change a flat in the future.

A Polestar 2 doesn’t come into our garage at Pellon Autocentre very often. The sleek electric vehicle, with its quiet motor and eye-catching Scandinavian design, was parked in our workshop bay. It was a clear indication of how the automotive industry was evolving. Even though installing four new tyres is a common task, this one felt like a tribute to the past, present, and exciting future. It’s worthwhile to examine the Polestar 2’s history and the development of electric vehicles over time before delving into the tyre replacement.

A Brief Overview of Polestar’s Past

Volvo’s high-performance division is where Polestar got its start. The company has shifted its focus from only tweaking fast Volvos to being a global leader in electric vehicles (EVs). Of course, after the recent “lockdown” many thousands of people will be getting their caravans and motorhomes ready. The British bank holiday season starts this year with the Easter holiday. Significantly, this is a time when thousands of holidaymakers will be checking their tyres. Including tyre pressures, ready for their first trips away.

So us Brits do this every year. Even though we know that we will be stuck in massive traffic jams and hold ups.  Wherever we go, but especially to the coast. Never the less we do it every year. We Brits yearn to get away over the bank holiday period and the adjoining school holidays.

What we do not all do is to check our tyres and Tyre Pressures ?

You would think that it was common sense. But many set off and do not think anything about it. These are the ones that we see on the hard shoulder of the motorway. Including, the grass verge. So, having to change a flat tyre or a blown out tyre on their caravan. The worse culprits seem to be the guys who are going camping and towing a little trailer. These small trailers are usually fitted with 400×8 trailer tyres. Similar to wheel barrow tyres. Because they are so small. Therefore, it is imperative that you inflate them to the correct

I have seen hundreds of these trailers parked up with a wheel missing. Because of the tyre blown out and the owner not having a spare the same size. If you use this type of vehicle! Then you must carry a spare wheel. So, if you are doing sixty mile an hour and you have a puncture in one of these trailers.

I must admit that I was not convinced about the eventual effectiveness of TPMS systems fitted to the earlier car models. So, as a busy tyre business! the first time that we had come across one of these systems was when a member of my staff broke a TPMS sensor. Thus, when removing a tyre from the rim?

In the past prior to the TPMS valves being fitted, we just used to rip the old tubeless valve out and then fit a new one. Consequently, we did this with every tubeless. So, a new valve was fitted to every new tyre or puncture repair.

The first time we came across

a TPMS valve was when one of my fitters ripped out the valve. Consequently, a complete new sensor had to be fitted. So, in the early days, we had to buy a replacement from the main dealers. In this case, it cost me £130 for a new valve? wow !

This article is thus coming out in the Cumnock Chronicle . It is no surprise! Especially to all of us genuine tyre dealers selling new tyre products for a living. As a result, we are very concerned about the way that these people are setting up. So, all these back street part-worn tyre shops that have sprung up recently are making me cringe!.

Especially in the past couple of years. Making some areas look like the back streets of Cairo (this is what i saw on a recent visit to Egypt). Incredibly, there was a tyre shop on every corner. Staff in so-called tyre shops were inflating tyres with old foot pumps.

Since I wrote this article,

their has been a rise in the number of prosecutions for Dangerous tyres. That is to say, against part-worn tyre dealers who sell Dangerous tyres. In this case, that does not come under the law. So some dealers do act within the law and I have nothing against this. But it is the unscrupulous dealers that should be targeted.

I am amazed that people live in a civilised country like ours!

Would they think that they could buy a decent tyre for only £20? Local authorities throughout the UK and the USA are starting to clamp down on the illegal sale of these dangerous tyres.
