Frightening to think about what is going to happen when the new idea “Smart Motorways” take off! Many people don’t yet know this, but the new idea is this; when you use the new Smart Motorway and your vehicle develops a fault that causes your vehicle to loose power and stops running.

Consequently, you the driver is then expected to slow down to a stop in whichever lane you are in. Accordingly, you will not be required to try and move over to the hard shoulder. So, it will not be there anymore, you simply stop in whichever lane your vehicle breaks down in.

Winter tyres grip-can help you get a grip in the cold and the Snow- Evening Telegraph

Winter tyres grip

Winter tyres grip can help you in the cold
Evening Telegraph On damp or wet roads, tyres grip differently — and the braking distance is substantially longer.

Winter tyres

It pleases me very much to see how the British public have responded to the efforts of the owners of tyre outlets and the many motoring publications, that have been

Citroen fitted with 4 Yokohama winter tyres

advising the public about the advantages and safety features of fitting winter tyres to your car.

What started me off committing myself to this subject was the massive increase of traffic on our roads, combined with the worsening winters that we were getting. This in my eyes makes road safety, especially where brakes and other road safety factors are concerned. Cars are travelling and accelerating at much faster speeds and therefore requires better braking systems and tyre technology. The latter is probably my specialist subject and a subject that I am passionate about, therefor the advice that I give to drivers and my customers is in their best interest.

The subject of whether or not to fit winters in November time or not, to me is a “no brainer”. Here in West Yorkshire winter will shortly arriving , in fact this morning the local council gritting trucks are out gritting the icy roads. Winter tyres have a special compound that has silicone added to the rubber compound.

Winter tyres grip

Of course, this ensures that the winters remain flexible in freezing weather conditions, and are still able to maintain there grip on icy or snowy roads. On the other hand a summer ones that do not have additives will begin to harden when the temperature drops below 7 degrees centigrade, when Winter tyres grip . The effect is similar to your wiper blades, we all know that in cold weather that your wiper blades become very hard and will not clean the windscreen, all other rubber items have the same affect, and do not work correctly in cold weather.

If the tyre does not flex because of the cold, then the tread will not be able to do the job of gripping, especially in cold weather or on a very dirty rainy day when you may be traveling at 70 mph on a motorway. Winters will flex and give you the full tread onto the road, together with a much better designed tread pattern made especially for wet and snowy winter conditions, there is no doubt that Winter tyres grip . You owe it to yourself and your family to be as safe as possible on our very busy roads in winter time, none of us know what the weather will throw at us on any given day,(not even the weather man)

Mintex Rally and Goodyear Tyres

This attached article takes me back to when I was branch manager for a leading tyre company, owned by Goodyear Tyres.

I became interested in rallying through a customer that wanted me to swap some rally tyre around on the wheels and other stuff like that. he said that he would put our company sticker on his car if we did the jobs for free. Many local drivers were self funded and paid for the expenses through their own pockets.

The guy would leave his tyres and wheels with us to repair at our own leisure. I began to take some interest in rallying, but only the tyre side of it. Word soon got round and my area manager told me about a rally car that our company actually sponsored.

The car was a Ford Escort Mk2 driven by a lady contestant.

Her tyres were of course made by Goodyear and I volunteered to attend the rallies and help out with the tyre fitting if any help was needed. After a few small meetings the car was entered into the much larger “Mintex Rally“. The rally was to take part in North Yorkshire close to where I lived near Huddersfield.

Chrissy Ashford was one of the countries leading lady drivers at the time (now sadly passed away). The Mintex Rally was one of the big ones. Goodyear Tyres attended with a huge truck full of spare built up tyres and wheels. The truck would be where the cars parked on their over night stops. If any tyres needed changing then we would do this at the night time stops.

I remember the weather was very icy and snowy.

The Goodyear truck was well equipped with the latest tyre fitting machine. A couple of my staff were also interested and would consequently turn up to help me. Although it was all free work, it did not matter because I was amazed how much that I learned about tyres and tyre compounds.

It was always a good talking point with my customers back at the depot. because of my first hand experience with the Goodyear tyres products and knowledge about the tyres performance including tread patterns and tyre compounds.

I remember making a good impression with Goodyear after breaking all sales records at my Huddersfield branch.

Car Tyres Repairs from Repair Specialists

6 best puncture precautions

  1. Keep your tyres properly inflated: Underinflated tyres are more susceptible to punctures because they have a larger contact patch with the ground, which increases the chance of hitting a sharp object.
  2. Use tyre liners or puncture-resistant tyres: These are designed to prevent or reduce the chance of getting a puncture.
  3. Avoid riding on rough roads or through debris: This is especially important when riding through construction zones or areas with a lot of broken glass or other sharp objects on the road.
  4. Keep your vehicle in good condition: Regularly inspect your tyres and other components for wear or damage that could make your bike more vulnerable to punctures.
  5. Install a bike computer with a speedometer, as it can help you notice any unusual vibrations in the tyre that could indicate a puncture before it becomes a full-blown flat
  6. Have a spare tube, pump, and tyre lever with you when you ride, so that you’re prepared if you do get a puncture, which can help you get back on the road quickly and safely.

So, a little bit of history! As a life long tyre guy then specialists tyre repairs have always been around. Of course, I can now go back to the beginning, to the introduction of radial car tyres. Firstly, many of these tyres were fitted with inner tubes. Specifically, Michelin tyres on early French imported cars. including Renault and Citroen. So, car tyres containing inner tubes were very common. also relatively easy to repair. When the tubes were removed, they were either repairable or ripped to pieces! due to them being run on when deflated.

Heat Causes More Tyre blowouts puncture repairs

Then came the “tubeless tyres”

Very early in my tyre career, we were introduced to “tubeless tyres.” These are still the norm in today’s tyre market. remembering that my manager at the time said they would “never catch on” !

As a result, we were given some rudimentary instruction on how to repair these tyres when they became punctured. All sorts of new products were introduced and shown to us by different tyre repair salesmen. So, one guy tried to sell us what he said was a ball of string soaked in vulcanised rubber. A piece was cut off the ball and pushed through the hole in the tyres tread ! where the nail had pierced the tyre. This is something I will never forget! Because his demonstration tyre had about 500 of these pieces of string pushed into holes ! while the tyre was still inflated.

So it resembled a large hedgehog ! Very strange! However, this never took off, and a sort of mushroom repair patch became the standard. The repair area was buffed and dirt was removed. A probable cause would be a nail or screw. As a result, the object was removed and the hole was drilled to take one of the mushroom repair patches.

These were to be the answers for years to come. The stem of the mushroom would fill the hole caused by the nail, and the inside had a vulcanised patch covering the damaged area. perfect !

Bigger holes required a different repair method

Moving on a few years, I got a job working for a tyre repair specialist in Leeds. So, the coal and steel industries in the UK were in full swing. Consequently, there was a need to repair the giant tyres that were fitted to the giant earth-moving machines. It was significantly larger than the car tyres I was used to repairing, and it presented a new challenge.

Believe it or not the systems for repairing were much the same except of course the difference in size. In fact you could get inside most of these large tyre to repair them. So, in the next five years I was able to learn a great deal about different tyre repairing methods. Of course this was to help me in the coming years of owning my own tyre business.

So, to bring us up to date we have now installed a “hot vulcanised car tyre repair machine“. Car tyre have become much larger in recent years. Of course mainly due to the advent of the SUV  type of vehicles and large motorhomes. Tyre damage to the shoulder area can be repaired by using our specialist equipment. Although good profit for us , then it can also save the customer a small fortune ? naturally by not having to buy a new tyre.

All round tyre service

As a tyre centre owner for over forty years now, it has always been my aim to be an all-round tyre service facility for my customers in the Halifax area. So the addition of such equipment, including an alloy wheel straightening machine, Including a new “four wheel alignment centre” has brought us very close to achieving this goal.

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

Winter tyres

Of course, there has never been any doubt about Quality Winter Tyres . Significantly, including the fantastic job that they do when winter arrives. Including, most in the Northern hemisphere, no matter what country you live in.

It is always an advantage when great car magazines !

The likes of Autocar reinforce what us tyre experts have been saying for years. So. the reason that we tend to harp on about Quality Winter Tyres. Importantly, is the safety aspect of the product. These days the cars are getting much faster and powerful and we also have had the recent influx of SUV’s and crossover cars. These vehicles are next to useless when it comes to coping with the winter conditions of snow and ice. They are large and powerful and are absolutely useless in the snow without Quality Winter Tyres fitted.

Quality Winter Tyres are now an essential safety commodity

Significantly, to be used on our modern day vehicles. Winter tyres will even give you  significantly safety advantage when driving on the motorway on a stinking wet day. So must be considered before the winter sets in. We at Pellon Tyres in Halifax recommend a couple of makes that have been proven to us over the years. They are Nokian and Jinyu ! Although Jinyu are an economy brand. Importantly, we have tested these on our own vehicles over the past few years.

Of course winter is on its way yet again! So, I wonder what the 2020 winter will bring us. However it is important to keep you and your family safe and consider winter tyre if new tyres are required.

Scrap Tyre Dumping Returns

Waste Tyre Uses- there are many uses of scrap tyre now including these great planters.

Home » All Tyre Articles » Page 13

Waste Tyre Uses

Correct tyre disposal is in all our interest. Old tyres are just part of the problem of recycling all our waste. During recent times we have started to solve the problem of mass disposal of our scrap tyres. Hence, they are now turned into many useful items. Importantly, such as tarmac chipping where the small pieces of rubber are shredded. So, these rubber chips are added to tarmac to give a quieter road surface. The other big use is that they are used to power cement kilns. Thus, which are specially heated to dry out the liquid cement in large kilns. The kilns are designed not to emit any smoke into the atmosphere, making this a very green process.

In essence, the thing that I am pleased with is the millions of ways that ordinary people have found ways to use our old car tyres to make different items. Some make clothing and jewelry, but the main items are made into garden objects and I think that they look really good. I am starting to show some of these ideas on my blog and hope to inspire people to use a few old waste tyres into making similar things.

Waste Tyres Uses-Collected from any tyre depot for free

Ultimately, tyre depots would only be too pleased to let any gardener take scrap ones. Of course, to be used as planters. Here in Halifax UK we are only too pleased to help anyone out with some old ones.

So, to bring things up to date, then gardening has become more popular in 2020. Subsequently, due to the terrible covid 19 lockdown that we here in the UK have had to put up with. People have taken up a greater interest in nature! Including a rise in the number of gardeners. Given these points, people in smaller gardens have taken to container based gardening. Including using old tyres again.
