Car Servicing under Warranty-Do You Have to Have Your Servicing Done By the Main Dealer ?

Car Servicing under Warranty

Your car servicing can be carried out when the car is  under the manufactures warranty

Car Servicing under Warranty

European Union EU flag

So, as a garage owner of long standing ! This is a question that I am always asked. Albeit too late to benefit my garage. Of course, when customers come to us for say a tyre fitting.Naturally, then they sometimes ask us what the price of a service would be for their car. Some customers then say that we can’t do the car  servicing ! Because the car is under the manufacturer’s warranty. Subsequently, they must take their cars to the main dealer (franchise garage).

This ruling was brought out in the European Union (EU) in 2010 .  As an update to previous legislation. Consequently, this is similar to the American version of “Right to repair act”. It was brought up to date to prevent the car manufacturers from protectionism. Including, diverting the cars that they made to their franchise dealers. Thus not allowing any work to be passed onto the independent garage sector. While the vehicle was still under warranty. This also would have included Prestige Car Servicing. Giving the main dealer garages the monopoly for all the work. Whilst the car was still in the warranty period.

This was not acceptable to the EU.

So, as car repair bills were then accounting for 40% of running and owning a family auto. Unfortunately, the costs were going to rise in future years. In my opinion this legislation was not very well publicized. Because the general public do not know much about the fact that you can take your vehicle to a reputable independent garage. Finally, even if the car is still under the makers warranty scheme.

More reading…European Union Auto legislation

Car owners are still told that they must return their cars to the franchise dealers for servicing. Including out of warranty repair work. Including, such things as brake pad replacements and other wear and tear items. Tragically, or else if they don’t it will affect their cars warranty. This is simply NOT TRUE?

A couple of my customers have told me recently that this is what the salesman had told them, when they had bought their new vehicle. One was a guy with a BMW, who told him that the carcar servicing under warranty

had to be serviced by the BMW garage to keep the cars warranty. Another woman customer had bought an Audi TT from the local Audi franchise and they told her the same. I am not sure if it is a lack of knowledge by the car salesman, but I suspect that they must be trained to say these things.

The EU legislation states that all car makers

So, have to offer the least, a two year unlimited mileage warranty on all their cars. This starts from the day the car is first registered. These car sales people should know the law and I am sure the same thing is applicable in the USA, as I stated under their “right to repair laws”. The two year minimum warranty ruling also applies if the car changes ownership within the warranty period.

The 2010 EU ruling along with previous legislation has been around for quite a while now and all franchise garages know that you cannot force a new car buyer to return the car for all its car servicing or brake work.  Enabling the car to retain its warranty. The only stipulation is that the independent garage that is carrying out the service should carry out the work according to the cars manufacturing service manual and also use service parts of the same quality as the original equipment fitted the vehicle.

car servicing

Car servicing Halifax can also be carried out by other local garages if the car is still under warranty

In my opinion it is good practice to have your car servicing done at a reputable garage

One that may be recommended by your family or friends. If possible look out for a garage that is one of the “good garage schemes” or one that is vetted by the Motor codes organisation or by the Independent Garage Association. My garage is a member of one of these schemes and you may think that I am blowing my own trumpet.

But in my opinion ! Standards are high and customer care is a priority at most of these regulated garages. I must stress though, that if a part is found to be faulty . Then the franchise dealer has the right to repair the van under the terms of the car warranty. In my opinion this entirely fair and reasonable. Because it will the manufacturer who will be paying for the faulty parts being repaired. Consequently, they need to have proper procedures in place and a correct paper chase

This post does not cover warranties that are sold by a third party. Including, extended warranties offered by the garage that have sold the car. So, my advice is to be careful with that situation. Some of these other types of warranties that are not under the regulations covering the manufacturer’s warranties may require you to have your car serviced at the dealership where the van was bought.

We recently had this type of problem with a car that had a worn out clutch.

The lady customer brought the car to us for a new clutch fitting. Unfortunately, and did not tell us that the car was still under warranty. She genuinely thought that she did not have to pay for the clutch fitting. Unknowingly, and that we could claim the money back from the car manufacturers. After a long argument and many phone calls to the main dealer she finally paid us for her clutch fitting and went away a very confused and disgruntled lady, never to be seen again.

This was a perfect case of the car owners, not knowing about their cars warranty procedures.

“Under EU law, you may invoke your guarantee at any dealer in the manufacturer’s network, regardless of the EU country in which you bought the car. So if you buy your car in Germany and take it back with you to France. So, you go to a car dealership for that make of car close to your home to ask for a manufacturing fault to be remedied (within the guarantee period), rather than travelling back to Germany”…http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/vehicles/cars/faq/index_en.htm

Electric cars-Dealers Are Really Scared Of Tesla Disrupting The Servicing Experience

Service departments are important for car dealers and Auto Centres in general?

eric roberts‘s insight:

When Electric cars arrive will car servicing be a thing of the past

Well according to this article, it would be Electric cars from Tesla that get in their way. I have been having this discussion on LinkedIn forums for ages now, and most industry professionals, think the same way as me and that the future car mix will be the old and new Electric cars technology cars mixed.

America has now found themselves with oil that will last them many more years ahead, from the new technology  of “fracking“.

This is where crude oils are forced out from between layers of shale rock that could not be previously  got at, using conventional mining methods.

This new oil find will in my opinion secure the use of gasoline(petrol) driven vehicles, all be it with much more efficient engines and probably diesel. Diesel can also be made from

car servicing

If it is up to Tesla car servicing would be a thing of the past

organic plant materials, known as Bio fuels. which are already in use in today’s diesel engined cars. We can also recycle old fuels including old oil to purify and use in these engines.

EV and electric cars are being developed at a very fast pace along with Hydrogen cell cars and no doubt there will be many more new inventions coming out of the Worlds universities as governments plough billions of dollars into new research and development.

All these different mixes of car technology will in the future mean a very diverse mix of cars on the roads of the World.

Car servicing will still be a thing of the future

I also think that the “right to repair bill” that is law in America and also very similar to the European Union laws that are designed to protect the replacement car servicing and

parts companies from new technologies that are created by the car manufacturing companies such as Tesla Electric cars in America and say BMW in Europe.

Proper wheel alignment allows your car to handle properly. It also means that your tyres won’t wear out prematurely.

Eric Roberts’ insight:

Spring Service

This year will be no better time to have your car or SUV serviced. The reason why is that here in the South West of England, we have experienced the wettest winter for many years.

The cars have been wading in floods all across the South and especially in the Somerset Wetland’s, an area of England that is bellow sea levels and has been heavily flooded for most of the winter.

In my opinion, it is important now that the flooding has receded, to take you car into a local Car Service centre and have a Spring Service and the Car Brakes checked over.

The most vulnerable parts to suffer from water damage are your cars brakes. Most modern engines are now sealed units and do not have spark plugs and electric coils anymore,

Not just a Spring Service any service will benefit your car

spring service

Catalytic Converters can easily be damaged by flood water

Significantly, though the water can enter your exhaust pipes. Thus causing damage to the catalytic converter. Consequently, this may not be detected straight away! But you may end up with your cars engine management light coming on at a later stage. Irritatingly, the water damage shows up in your cars engine management system. Including your particulate filter.

Most things will be picked up when you Spring Service your car, but this is a good time have a spring service as the weather start to improve, as I say especially the cars braking system.

Many good Auto-centres now offer a free  brake check here in the UK and if you do not have a garage then you could do no worse that looks up your nearest Unipart Auto-centre, where you know that you will be treated fairly with honest pricing and their work is covered by a nationwide guarantee.

All these new procedures have come about by a change in the MOT testing rules from May 2018.  So, from May 2018 the smoke test limit for Euro 6 and some Euro 5 diesels will be halved. This also ties up with the number of cars that have been having there DPF’s (Diesel particulate Filters) removed completely. So it will now be an MOT test failure if your vehicle does not have an EGR valve fitted and has had it removed.

Of course this will affect drivers who have bought a second hand car and are unaware of its removal. In a statement obtained by Garage Wire the online care repair specialists,  a Department of Transport  spokesperson said:

“We are taking strong action to stop the removal of DPFs. “We expect future changes to the MOT emissions test for diesel vehicles, due to come into force by May 2018, to make it easier to detect vehicles with failing or removed DPFs.”

CONTAMINATION AND ITS EFFECTS ON AN ENGINE

Fuel and Oil are an organic matter, when they are burnt or left to naturally degrade they form contamination, this adheres to different components within the engine, namely:

  • EGR Valve
  • Lambda Sensor
  • HVL
  • VVT System
  • Injectors
  • Valves
  • Piston Crown
  • Piston Rings

Over the last 20 years, engines have become more complex and the tolerances within the engine have become finer. As a result, it takes just a small amount of contamination to adversely affect engine performance.

Pellon Autocentre invest in a new Carbon Clean machine

Of  your vehicle can now fail the emissions part of the MOT Test due to the new stricter smoke test that comes under the Euro 5 and Euro 6 lowered limits. So to keep up to speed we here at Pellon Autocentre have invested in a new machine for cleaning up your vehicles engine. This can be done in conjunction with a regular service or to just get your vehicle through the MOT tests stricter emission rules.

Modern engine design, coupled with a drive to reduce harmful emissions, has led to a significant increase in contamination related issues such as

  • Blocked DPF’s
  • Fouled Fuel Injectors
  • MOT emission failures

The Tec4 Carbon Cleaning Machine, backed up with our unique marketing package, allows you to fix these issues with minimal fuss and promote a preventative maintenance solution.

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

Neglect car servicing advice from Africa

I know that I keep going on about how important car servicing is. But its good advice when I see other countries preaching the same thing. So this article comes from Africa! Giving the  motorist some good points that affect all car drivers. Importantly to have your car serviced. Of course, there may be some serious underlying problem with your car.

Especially, about hidden problems that you do not know about. Significantly, that a service should pick up. The main neglect that we come across is Car Brakes problems, for example leaking brake cylinders that are undetected could lead to a sudden brake loss, and heaven knows what that could cause, so please have your car servicing done at regular intervals. Please do not Neglect car servicing?

If you would like some advice  about your cars servicing intervals then here you are .

From my advice I would like to stress that the newer your car is then the fewer services the car will need. Most of today’s modern cars that our customers drive are supposed to be serviced every 12000 Miles Per Year. Or at least once a year. Some of the older models require more Servicing a Car, but we tend to check out the service booklets and service the cars accordingly.

After three years, your car should have averaged say 12000 miles every year, but many drivers do not do that amount of miles, so in that case i would advise you once again to stick to the mileage regime and not the time scale. In my opinion it is best practice to stick to the cars service manual. If you do Neglect car servicing and exceed the miles, say if you use your car for work purposes then you should have the 12000 mile service once a year, or at least make sure that the car has a major service.

But most importantly please make sure that the car has the oil and filter changed, as oil contamination can always run into other more major problems. Also check the time or mileage that your timing belt needs changing, this can be the major problem if you Neglect car servicing , if your car requires it, most do and have a brake check. if you have a 12000 mile yearly service, then all this will be taken care of.

Timing belt change intervals can be checked out, Neglect car servicing could result in your engine blowing up.

Basic Automotive care-and Other Important Car Care Tips

Basic Automotive care

Basic Automotive care;Owning a car or truck carries with it the responsibility of ownership.

If you want your vehicle to give you years of hassle-free service, it will be necessary to provide Basic Automotive care and routine maintenance and upkeep to keep it running well. Otherwise, your car could leave you stranded at the most inopportune moments. That is why it is important to buy cars from verified and quality car dealers such as Carzoos if you want to

Basic Automotive care

Basic Automotive care;Topping up your oil should be a regular maintenance job

avoid frequent repairs.

For starters, ensure your car has the proper amount of oil in it at all times, which is a Basic Automotive care . On the engine is a stick with a ring or handle on it with an oil can displayed on it. Check your oil routinely by removing the dipstick. The dipstick can be found as a handle along the top of the engine with an “oil can” picture. Remove the dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert into the tube and remove again to check the oil level. If it’s low, add a quart of oil to the engine, usually another cap that says “OIL” on it, most of the time it can be found on top of the engine itself. Your oil should be changed every 3500 to 5000 miles to keep your engine running efficiently.

Another Basic Automotive care, is Checking your coolant system, while cool, will also keep your car running great. The temperature gauge on your dash board will usually tell you if you have a cooling system problem. Most engines are designed to run below 210 degrees F, anything over that is considered overheating. You can add coolant or water to your system using the overflow tank in the engine compartment, but only when it’s cool. Beyond adding coolant, if you are experiencing engine overheating, go to your local mechanic. There are four possible causes of engine overheating-a bad water pump, a bad radiator, a bad thermostat or a ruptured hose along the cooling system path. The replacement of the water pump and radiator are expensive but it’s usually a once every 150,000 miles replacement. Some cars happen sooner, some happen later, but they all will have it happen.

Basic Automotive care

Tires are good for 40,000 to 50,000 miles before they need replacement. But checking the air pressure periodically is vital. Each tire will have a recommended pressure on the tyre itself. Purchase a tire gauge at the local auto parts store or big box store and check your tyre pressure. Most convenience stores have an air pressure machine that will allow you to fill your tyres for a fee, once again an important piece of Basic Automotive care . You can also swing by a local tire shop or garage and most will check your air pressure for free. When your tires begin to lose their tread or become bald, it’s time to purchase new tires. Once you have purchased these tires, have a maintenance plan in place to rotate and re-balance every 10,000 miles or so. This will ensure the longest life from your tires.

Basic Automotive care

Basic Automotive care

Brakes are also an important part of Basic Automotive care . While you cannot routinely maintain your brakes, you can prevent unneeded repairs by taking your car to an automotive shop when you first hear that brake squeal. That squeal is the brake wear indicators telling you that your brake pads need to be replaced. If you continue to wait and ignore the brake wear indicators, you will have the additional cost of replacing the rotors(discs)as well. If identified early enough, your rotors can be placed on a machine and resurfaced instead of having to be replaced.

Basic Automotive care

These are just a few Basic Automotive care parts of the routine maintenance items you can check for yourself to keep your car in good working order. Finding a mechanic you can trust is also an important factor as well. Seek out recommendations from friends and colleagues for a quality mechanic to help guide you through your car maintenance issues.

European Union Car Servicing-2010 E.U. Rules about garage working practices?

 Post Updated 1st Jan 2014/25th march 2016

European Union Car Servicing; Equality was the key word for car servicing

European Union Car Servicing

European Union Car Servicing

European Union Car Servicing were up for renewal in May 2010. The standards were all about setting out the rules to take into account the huge amount of trade competition in the automotive industry markets for the way that a fair distribution of new motor vehicles and technology and their prospective replacement parts, and for the fair provisions for the car servicing (Car Service Costs) , repair and maintenance sectors of the common market. This is part of the scheme to protect smaller auto companies from getting unfairly treated regarding the flow of information freely from the car makers to the rest of the car sector.

The markets for competition for new cars was thought to be healthy in the new car sector but the garage repair and for spare parts distribution was not as intense, This is meant a danger to motorists who could be harmed by anti-competitive practices that would push up repair bills. The car servicing and garage Repair industry are very valuable for motorists if it was not for the EU rule the price of car servicing would go sky high, as much as 40% (predicted by the EU)

Many motorists are already feeling the effect of increasing car servicing and repair costs because of rising oil costs and the existing recession, they are more price-sensitive and tend to own much older cars that need more regular car servicing. The EU have put in place a much stricter set of rules to govern these automotive markets that will make it easier to enforce the new regulations. One of the problems that were a specific issue was that car makers were holding back technical information and not releasing some of the specific parts to the aftermarket, and also refusing to honour car warranties because motorists were having their vehicles repaired at independent garages, and not the main dealers where the cars were bought.

Independent garage facilities and repairers are very important because they give a better choice to motorists and keep the cost of services and repairs very competitive by placing pressure on the car manufacturers main dealers and authorised repair networks. Independent service centre has been set up to give the independent garages a nationwide service to their customers, one of the best being Unipart Car Care Centres (UCCC) for short.

It is also very important that garages can get the technical information necessary to do the repairs and carry out the work on increasingly sophisticated cars with increasing amounts of equipment, due to stricter emission and greener controls, this to me is what is not happening, we at Pellon auto centre here in Halifax are forever coming across new fault codes in the engine management systems that our machines can not correct, because the car manufacturers have so called updated them, they are always moving the gate posts to try to outfox us and our computers. Most garages are buying new diagnostic machines and computer-based analytic equipment that can plug into the database of most cars computer systems. Because of the new European Union Car Servicing directive, the majority of new cars coming onto the market will be able to be serviced at independent garages and auto centres, such as Unipart (UCCC).

The other European Union Car Servicing rules are the parts used in servicing are compatible with the manufacturers and main dealer components, for example, an oil filter must be of the same quality as a manufactures oil filter. This is now carried out at most independent garages, we always use equal quality parts or we use parts from the main dealers themselves, most service parts are actually made by the same company that supplies the car manufacturers, a good example is LUK clutches. They make clutches both for the replacement market and the car makers.

Are the new rules working for the car servicing sector ?

The new rules will help to enforce the competition for the independent garage, auto centre, and parts outlets. They are designed to help create a level playing field between the replacement car section and the car manufacturers, which will help drive down the cost of servicing the community of Europe and the UK.

This ruling is now two years old and although things appear to be going to plan, the speed of the development of EV cars is outstripping the rules on sharing the technology from the manufacturers. One example is the advent of the Li-On batteries fitted to the electric cars. These batteries are now Leased to the car owners when they buy a new car. Is this how the car makers are going to get around the European Union Car Servicing laws, in my opinion I think it is ?.

Air Filters Explained-Car Servicing tips What Your “AIR FILTER” Does

Air Filters Explained

Air Filters Explained;Make sure that your Air Filter gets changed not just cleaned ?

I say this because when I was an apprentice mechanic. Hence, the garage that I worked at never changed an air filter. In those days they just blew it out with an air-line.Thus, or washed it in petrol, but they always

charged the customer for a new one fitting. I remembered all these little things. So in life as I grew older and vowed to myself never to make the same mistakes. If you can not do the job properly, or “don’t do it at all”. This is one of the reasons that I teamed up with Unipart Car Care Centres  (UCCC) for short. We are regularly checked and vetted .Hence, to make sure that our

servicing is done correctly. Therefore, and no short cuts are taken. Indeed we save all the old parts to show to the customer. Therefore, should he ask to see them. However the air filter is one of the important parts of your car.

Air Filters Explained

That you need to change at certain service intervals. After all, it is one of those parts that do an unseen but very important job. Hence the “Air Filters Explained”. Remember that its main functions is to actually prevent dirt and particulate matter. Thus, from entering your engine. It does what it says on the tin. it cleans the air that enters your engine.
What is very important. Is that you should change air filter regularly. Service centre experts suggest that you should at least replace an air filter once a year. However, there are exemptions to this rule. Because, these exemptions depend on the what kind of performance that your car has and the frequency the car is used for.

Air Filters Explained

Air Filters Explained

As part of your service the cars engine performance increases with the addition of a new air filter If air filters are new, they actually increase your car engines efficiency.

The new air filter is made up of layer upon layer of thin paper and other materials that make the filter very porous and allows air through, dirty air comes in at the inlet and clean air enter the engine after been filtered. If a mechanic only cleans the filter then it is impossible to do a correct cleanse, due to all the layers of paper, this is done by some . But it is not good practice.
Replacing your air filters are done as part of a service and need not be expensive

Air Filters Explained

The job is fairly simple but it is best to go to a mechanic or your local Unipart Automotive  service centre. You actually can do it yourself, but it is best done by a professional.
The air filter is usually mounted on top of your engine. However, for some older cars with carburetors, you would see that the Car Air Filters are located in front of the carburettor

usually on the side of the engine. In a fuel injection car, the more common type now, the air filters would be enclosed in a square or a rectangular housing (some are very large)which could be mounted somewhere on the side of your car’s engine and not on top of it.

Air Filters Explained

If you do intent to fit the air filter yourself then when the old filter is removed you should then clean the filter housing with a recommended cleaner. Try using a vacuum cleaner to suck out the dust in the filter pan before putting the new filter in and re-assembling the whole thing back on to the engine. It is highly recommended though that the air filter is changed as part of your annual service.

car servicing Halifax

Car Servicing Halifax-There are different types of car maintenance?

Car Servicing Halifax

Cars are just pieces of machinery and need Car Servicing Halifax

Car Servicing Halifax

Car Servicing Halifax

Modern cars, are just like any other piece of machinery. Require regular maintenance. So, if your car is neglected. Consequently, it will become worn and tired and will eventually stop working . Through experience and in my opinion this is what will happen.

This is why regular servicing is very important. Carried out regularly will ensure that your car performs at the optimum level for much longer. Not all car owners can afford to take their car to the garage for Servicing and  repairing.Because of the skill and knowledge of the service mechanics. So, your local auto-centre in Halifax . Naturally, is best place to have  servicing carried out.

Levels of Car Services

Firstly, this is just a breakdown of the types of servicing . To be sure, that you may encounter at your local auto-centre. Most safety conscious drivers. Hence, will book their vehicle in for a service at least once a year. This is generally the case with most drivers that care for their cars and also care about road safety.

As a standard rule, most auto-centres that service your car have four types of services to choose from. These are (in order of the number of checks carried out):

1- engine service (oil and filter change) known as a Bronze service.

2- medium service Silver service.

3- full service Gold service.

4- full service + MOT test Platinum service.

Depending on the type of your vehicle and how much you use it, it is worth checking what is involved in each kind of these services.

Especially if you like most of us are concerned about the money situation. This is because each service has a scale of things that are carried out and it may be that you could only afford to have an engine service and not the large Gold service. In my opinion this would be better than not having your car serviced at all, and letting your car degenerate.

The most basic maintenance plan is the oil and filter change (engine service). This service changes your oil and oil filter, also checking basic safety things such as your tyres, lights and a visual check of the brakes.

car servicing Halifax

car servicing Halifax

If you use your car a lot throughout the year, you may consider booking your vehicle in for an medium car servicing Halifax, say every six months you can do this between your annual full service (gold service)

The next service is the silver service which will include somewhere in the region of 25-35 safety checks on your car, components such as brake fluid, handbrake travel, steering and suspension will be examined and reported on, if any further problems arrive.

The most comprehensive service an auto-centre offers is usually the Full Service (gold service). This is recommended by garages as an annual check-up, the gold car servicing Halifax will go through almost everything in a car using our special check list.

With well over 50 checks, a Gold Service will ensure that your car performs to optimum levels

This should last the car right after the year following your service. The gold service is often carried out with an MOT to make a platinum service.

Not only do these car servicing Halifax options act as fantastic preventative measures that will help to keep your car safe, but when you have booked your car in for a service the mechanics that carry out the work might spot things which could affect your MOT.

If small issues are found, these can be fixed before they turn into big problems that cost you far more money. Servicing a Car
