Car Servicing Tips-Six Easy Steps for Avoiding Expensive Car Repairs by sticking to basics

Car Servicing Tips; Car repairs need not be that expensive

Significantly, a visit to your local car repairs shop can be even more stressful. Say  than a visit to your local dentist. Perhaps you wont suffer physical pain. But sometimes your car repairs bill. Frighteningly, can leave your wallet or purse feeling pretty empty. Including, leaving you with a bad taste in your mouth.

Car Servicing Tips

Car Servicing Tips; Dale one of our MOT Testers checking the brake flued on a vehicle at our Halifax Garage

The best way to try and avoid costly repairs. So, is to take preventative maintenance measures and  Car Servicing Tips that will keep your car in the best condition possible.

The foremost thing that you should do is to follow the car manufacturers maintenance schedule. Of course, that will be outlined in your owner’s manual. The best guidelines are always always the ones that are recommended.Of course, by the manufacturer and if you fail to follow those guidelines. Your warranty may be voided for future repairs. Although here in Europe. You are allowed to have your car repairs and  servicing. So, carried out by a reputable garage, that uses original equipment service parts and oils by law. So, without breaking your warranty agreement. Importantly, a reputable garage would be one that operates under the MotorCodes schemes or an MOT testing station.

Always be sure to change fluids

Naturally, such as your brake fluid, all the filters and spark plugs (if fitted) to what the car’s manufacturer recommends. It is also a good idea to upgrade your motor oil to a higher performance synthetic oil, which can help to prevent certain problems and can also improve your car’s overall performance. We keep in several types of oil for servicing as specifications are changing all the time but using synthetic oil is not a bad thing and will cover most modern engines.

Always be sure that your tyres are correctly inflated. This is especially important, because tyres with too little air, or too much, can result in excessive wear with bad handling and may cause a tyre to blow out. It is often recommended that your tyre pressures are checked during every other visit to the petrol station. While this may seems excessive, you won’t be sorry that you have kept your tyres correctly inflated and therefore safer. For reasons of both safety and the expense of new tyres, the extra effort is well worth it.

If you notice any unusual noises coming from your car, whilst driving along check with your owner’s manual for information. Quite often, noises are perfectly normal and there is no need for concern. Your owner’s manual information section will let you know whether or not a visit to the Auto-centre is necessary.

Use a reputable garage for your car repairs

If you find that you do have to take your vehicle in for some Car Repair Advice, be sure that you are dealing with a reputable local company. Check with the other local people and ask your family or friends for recommendations. Also look out for your local Unipart Car Care Centre (UCCC), as they have very high standards to qualify for membership, and a nationwide warranty system, for if problems occur see your Local Car Repair Garages.

Bridgestone tyres bring out Bridgestone Blizzard Winters

eric roberts‘s insight:

Contrary to this article we find that UK customers DO buy winter tyres

Bridgestone tyres have indeed brought out  new Bridgestone Blizzard Winters. In my opinion this is a step that the other leading tyre makers are making, a more varied amount of winter products.

One of our biggest sellers here in Halifax was Yokohama “W” winter tyres they were very popular sellers.

Another reason that I do not agree with this article is because we are now much more conscious about changing our summers  with winters  because of the colder winters that we are now experiencing.

We have now been operating a “winter tyre hotel” for the past three years, not only does it work for us but it keeps in touch with our customers at least twice a year when they come in for theirs changing.

Bridgestone Tyres introduce a new SUV Winter Tyre

Blizzak SUV winter tyre LM-80

Bridgestone have upgraded their SUV winter tyres range to include the Blizzak LM-80 EVO. Although these tyres have been out a couple of years now, they have proved to be a leader in the SUV winter tyre market.

The old words when describing Bridgestone Blizzard Winters certainly flow when introducing this wonderful tyre product. In line with most other tyre manufacturers, Bridgestone Blizzard Winters have designed

Bridgestone Blizzard Winters

Bridgestone Blizzard Winters an excellent product

these with many sipe patterns to help get rid of the slush and wet that we associate with bad winter driving conditions. They have also added silica to the tyre compound to enable them  to remain flexible when driving in freezing temperatures.

The design is topped up with by adding  a centre rib and extra shoulder  blocks to the  tread area, for extra strength when cornering, giving these larger vehicles better handling and wet braking when driving in winter conditions. Here is some advice about driving in  winter conditions.

Austin Mini Cooper a true Classic-Reviews Buying Guide Parts And Service Advice

Austin Mini

The Classic Austin Mini is a legend amongst enthusiast’s and the general public alike, there are not many p…

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

The Early Austin Mini Will Never Die

Happily, I was lucky enough ! Or unlucky enough (it depends how you liked or hated the Mini). So,  to be able to work on the first mini models to come out. Proficiently, I was an apprentice mechanic. At a local Mini Dealership . Subsequently, soon to become British Leyland garage . Happily in a small town called Batley in West Yorkshire UK.

Austin Mini

Old fashioned tyre bead breaker that we had to try and break the 10ins mini wheels with.

Firstly, these little cars were pretty basic. Seriously, proposed a challenge to the experienced mechanics. Of course whenever these little vehicles went wrong ! Especially the engine unit or the gearbox and clutch.

Subsequently, mechanics in those days learned on the job . Making the new technology front wheel drive Austin Mini. Reluctantly, a new challenge. Because the technology was completely new. Especially in a small town garage.

These small Austin Mini cars were fitted with a 948cc engine in 1959 . I was told that the selling price was £399 for a brand new car. This was in 1959 ! Importantly, we did not get the Austin Mini dealership until five years later.

Minis had leaking water issues ?

I can remember the problems we had with these great little cars. Leaking water became a problem. Especially, in the boot compartment. So, water used to leak in through a drainage plug . bellow the spare wheel.

The Mini’s  ten inch wheels that were developed by Dunlop for the Mini . Significantly, the mini tyres were really bad to remove and fit. Hence from the wheels. Despondently, in those days we only had tyre levers and a hand gadget for breaking the beads. Equipment wise this was fine on the 14 inch A35 and A 40 wheels. But the 10 ins Austin Mini wheels had a very deep rim . Thus making it almost impossible to break the tyres bead by hand ! Fortunately the first tyre fitting machines were starting to evolve. So, we took the whole wheels to the local tyre dealers. Kindly, who helped us out with their new style Italian fitting machines.

I remember the worse water leak was in the boot, where the battery was fitted.

Over the years they tried out different drainage methods but the metal in the Mini Countryman boot always rotted in time. Mini modification companies sprung up all over the place, including companies that made fibre-glass body panels. These included a complete front end, because this was another bad area for rusting and rotting. Indeed i fitted a new front end to one of me first mini cars, but the damned thing used to flop about in the wind at any speed over twenty miles per hour?

Despite all its faults and draw backs I loved the Austin Mini and the first four cars that I owned were Minis, I used to try all sorts of modifications, but none ever made them go faster

It was a great experience to work on these cars and in my opinion they are still much loved all over the World.

Buying Your First Car? Here Are Some Tips

Wheel Balancing Problems-Wheel vibrations can damage your car.

Wheel Balancing Problems

Wheel Balancing Problems

Wheel Balancing Problems

So you love your job, and your family life is great. Congratulations! You have achieved balance. But can you say the same for your wheels? You can tell if yo… (Wheel Balancing Problems feel vibrations under your seat or steering wheel?

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

Wheel Balancing Problems

So, this video shows exactly how we balance a wheel. Some wheel balances  are much more sophisticated than others. However, they are all built on the same principals. Hence to achieve the same end result a good smooth ride ! Wheel balancing is carried out on every single tyre that we fit at Pellon tyres. Including any strip and fits or puncture repairs. Although this video is from the USA. Of course the equipment is international. So we do the same thing using the same type of wheel balancing machines.

Wheel Balancing Problems

Wheel Balancing Problems will shake your Blueberry Toyota Steering Wheel (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Wheel Balancing Problems are more noticeable when you are driving on the motorway (freeway). Significantly, it can be detected by a strange vibrating feeling. Of course, coming through the vehicles steering wheel. Especially at a certain speed. Usually, say between 50 and 60 mph. You can often drive through the vibrating feeling. Unpleasant, but generally it will not go away, and is most annoying.

Sometimes Wheel Balancing Problems can make you feel the vibrations coming from the cars seat

So, this usually the rear wheels which are out of balance. Other Wheel Balancing  problems with your vehicle can cause a shaking through the steering wheel. Generally though it will be the wheel balancing that causes the vibrations and other balancing problems. Commonly, the main  cause is a lost balance weight. Say, after your wheel has caught the kerb (sidewalk edge) . Logically, the weight may have come off and  this is the most common cause.

Another cause of out of balance wheels can be a buckled alloy wheel. Significantly, caused by the pot-hole problem that we are all having to endure. So, to combat this we have invested in a special machine. Of course to straighten bent alloy wheels back to their original shape. I will keep our customers informed in future blogs.

Local Garage Trust Worthy-Do you trust your local garage?Do They Give You a happy Smile?

Local Garage Trust Worthy

Local Garage Trust Worthy-Taking your car to your local garage should be a matter of trust.

The local garage I now own will be coming up to its 25 year anniversary in 2014. Believe me I really don’t know where all the time has gone. But it sure has. Many of today’s garage owners are reaching the end of their time. Regarding taking part in  the complete everyday running of the business. Leaving, everyday tasks to a reliable manager. Perhaps, sometimes to one of their family members.

In my case the Halifax garage and tyre bays are managed by by sister in-law Debbie. Hence, our online and battery business is now run by my wife Michelle. Of course, I am now concentrating on our battery selling web-sites. Trying to generate new business online.

Local Garage

Pellon garage reception with a TV coffee machine and up to date magazines. This is how your local garage should be

In my opinion the local garage (as they used to be), has passed its sell by date. These have been replaced by a nice modern Auto-centre system. This includes Pellon Autocentre here in Halifax UK.

As a result, this is the start of creating the trust that you must build. Hence, between the local garage and your customers. Most people run there lives in a clean and tidy order. Expecting the same of Autocentres when repairing or servicing their cars. So the order of the day is a nice clean garage. Where the customers can sit in a reception area. Perhaps watching TV or having a coffee. So whilst their car is having a job done. Of course this is the first stage. Subsequently, of gaining the customers trust in your local garage.

Local Garage Trust Worthy give a happy smile

When your customers first enter your nice clean reception. Then they should be greeted by a happy smiling member of your staff. Consequently, In my view this should be all your staff. If you have any grumpy or miserable staff working for you. Of course, you should get rid of them or retrain them to smile. because, in my opinion they will become a liability.Customers will pick this up and loose trust in them. Of course, even your mechanics and technicians. Therefore, should be of a happy and friendly nature.

The next thing is when your customer is greeted, they should be made to feel at ease when dealing with the problem of their car. Try to speak to them on there level and use visual aids to point things out, we use our Autodata system to show diagrams if possible, or show them the actual faulty part under their cars bonnet (hood). This also gives your customer confidence in your local garage and also trust in your garage and staff.

Another step that I took to create trust in your business is join some good trade associations, that can help your garage become more stable and secure in the fact that these trade bodies can increase your garages customer confidence, due to the fact that these trade bodies have to vet your garage premises and business practices in order for you to become a member in the first place.

Adding quality of service will once again add trust between  your customer and your garage.

As with many other Auto-centre owners of long standing, I could go on and on about this subject. Also there is no need to throw a lot of money at it, in most cases a lick of paint would be all that’s required and a nice happy friendly smile from your staff.

One of the best things I ever did was to call around a number of garages and tyre depots in my area, incognito so to speak. I was blown away by the amount of bad service and even bad

Being a member of your local trading standards is always a good sign that it is a local garage that you can trust also a member of Motorcodes

language. This even applied to some of the big boy’s depots, where they spend millions on staff training, but the general picture and standards was appalling. I now know why we have done so well over the years and created so much trust between the garage and our customers.

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY- Regularly Checking your Cars Brakes Could Save Your Life ?

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY

Along with your tyres , your car brakes are the most important (and sometimes most neglected) part of your car. I have been guilty of neglecting my brakes. Especially, when I was a young man. When I was a young mechanic, I borrowed a car from my then boss Peter.

Peter said that I could but I must check the car brakes. Also. the engine levels before setting off on my journey. I was heading for Blackpool. So, a seaside resort on the West coast of the UK. On our return home we started to pass through a town called Preston.

I was doing the statutory speed of 30 mph and was approaching a pedestrian crossing. Of course I should have had to stop. But, when I pressed the brake pedal. Then there was nothing there.Hence, the pedal went straight to the floor boards.

Consequently, I had to swerve the car to miss a guy walking across the crossing. Ending up on the pavement (side-walk). I rapidly pumped the pedal and managed to get some brakes. Thus, on the pedal. Luckily, the vehicle came to a stop. My  friends and I managed to push the car to a garage filling station. Of course, a hundred yards down the road.

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY

I lifted the bonnet (hood) only to find that the car brake fluid was at zero level.So. in the fluid reservoir. I felt a cold chill down my spine. Because, I remembered what my boss Peter had said. Just the day before we set off. We managed to buy some Tesco Brake Fluid and topped up the reservoir.

The car brakes pumped about half way up. Luckily the car would stop when I pressed the pedal. So, we limped home back to Yorkshire UK.Subsequently, a rather terrifying experience. Of course, which I vowed would never happen again. Lessons were learned that day. As a result, I am going to spell out a few important things about the care of your brakes. Hence, for you to understand. Before you embark on a journey or indeed at any time that you own a car.

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY-Your brakes are a life saver

The British MOT test has been a great step forward towards the safety of our cars and our roads. When your car is having it’s annual MOT test we check everything on that car ( to the  VOSA MOT test specifications). One of the problems of old was the checking of your car brake pipes.

Brake pipes connect all your four wheels braking system and the cylinders and brake pedal, and are fixed under the car, exposed to all the elements. They are protected by a special coating of wax-oil or sometimes just grease.

Despite all the protection. The Corroded Brake Pipes would rust and then start to leak the brake fluid, eventually causing the brakes to fail, similar to what happened to me in Preston.

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY for corrosion

The MOT test makes sure that all your brake pipes (lines) are in good working order and if not the car will fail the test and the pipes will have to be replaced. If you are not sure about the condition of your brake pipes you can get them checked out at your local Unipart Car Care Centre, free of charge, or the local garage that you use at the moment.

car brakes,brake pipes

Rotted brake pipes found on an MOT test examination

You must always check the brake fluid in the reservoir under your bonnet and top it up if required with the correct fluid. Check your brake pedal it should feel nice and solid, if it goes too far down then have yours checked by a professional garage or mechanic, don’t take risks, you should not have to pump your pedal to get a good brake.

You brake fluid should be changed every so often, this can be done when you have your car serviced, your local garage will be able to ascertain when, by looking it up on his service
computer for your model of car, we use the Autodata system for checking out the fluid change times.

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY Including the Fluid Levels

Also you should check your Disc Brakes and Car Brake Pads. These are the parts that constantly wear out and need replacing with Brake Pipe Kits when they get down to a certain thickness.

When the pads wear down to the the metal part of the pads, then this is when you can hear a loud grinding noise that frightens the driver to death. Once again if this happens then you should have your car brakes checked by a professional mechanic or your local garage.

Once again if you have your car serviced when you have your annual MOT test then your brakes will be checked and should be fine for the next year to come. If your brake pedal does not feel right or goes further down than it should before you get a brake, then have the car checked out do not continue to drive before the car is checked by an expert.

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY- Thanks Eric Roberts…www.mot-halifax.co.uk

Toyo Tyres F1600

Zacharie Robichon writes about his first win in an open-wheel car during the Toyo Tyres F1600 stop at Shannonville Motorsports Park.

Post Updated 6th Jan 2014

Toyo tyres

Toyo have always been one of my favorite tyre companies to deal with. Most of the time over the past 30 years Toyo have been a big supplier of small independent tyre companies such as my own company here in Halifax UK. But like most other tyre companies toyo decided to go down the tyre wholesaler route , to sell their products, thus cutting out us retailers, we also had an option to buy direct, but the tyres became available to anyone to sell and toyo became just another cheap car tyre on the market. The outcome is that retailers stopped sellintoyo tyres  .

Naturally, going onto to sell other similar products, such as General Tyres. We now use Yokohama tyres and Apollo tyres in there place, although Toyo are still a good product and if their policy ever changed, i would take them on board again,”what goes around, comes around” as the saying goes.

Toyo tyres are today still supporting the F1600 race series with their tyre products. Zacharie Robichon is still a prominent contestant.
