As the batteries become fully charged and are no longer able to accept any further electrical energy. Consequently, the battery voltage will rise. Of course, when the voltage reaches the regulation level (varies with battery type see below) So, starts to dump power the controller’s lights are a solid red. Naturally, this energy is dissipated as heat into the surrounding environment. Significantly, more or less power is diverted to the dump load. According to how much is being supplied to the battery from the turbine.

lead-acid batteries- How they were developed and improved-Eric Roberts

lead-acid batteries

Bill explains the essential principles of lead-acid batteries. He shows the inside of motorcycle lead-acid batteries, removes the lead and lead-oxide plates an…

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

Lead acid batteries have now been around in their present form for many years.

Of course, it is only in recent times that the lead acid car battery has been overcome. Subsequently, by the more modern technology batteries . As a result, that are now being developed for the modern electric and hybrid car manufacturers. Significantly, due to the rush for a more environmentally friendly battery products. Such as the Lithium-Ion ! Now used many car models such as the Nissan leaf and the Toyota Auris hybrids.

In my opinion though, the ever faithful lead acid batteries, that we still use in the millions. Thus, will still be around for many years to come. They have been tried and tested and proven for almost a hundred years since their invention in 1859 by French physicist Gaston Planté.

Nothing much has changed in the past forty years of time

As an old guy then, I have bought and sold batteries now for more than 40 years. Car battery types have had modifications. Additionally, such as different lead alloys. That are now used in the manufacture of the battery plates. Increasing development of casings to help suppress and resist vibrations. Most truck and car ones are now sealed and maintenance free. So the motorists do not have to top them up any more. Although some battery makers have the old fashioned screw tops. So that you can top up the electrolyte when the acid  has evaporated.

The big development came when the AGM lead-acid batteries was invented in 1985 for military use and was developed by Concorde batteries for commercial use outside the military. The AGM (absorbed Glass Matting) lead-acid batteries is completely sealed and now used in hundreds of applications, although once again these batteries may be slowly replaced by the Lithium-Ion batteries. I know that some golf trolley ones are coming out in Lithium-Ion, but at the moment they are very expensive and golfers have a reputation of shall we say, “not putting their hands in their pockets”. The Lithium-Ion’s  were also developed for the military and used on the stealth bombers and they were also used in space flight and on the Mars Lander Craft “Curiosity”.

Another recent development of the lead-acid batteries

So a new introduction has been the introduction of “stop Start” technology. Used on some new models of cars. This was developed by the World’s leading battery company, Johnson Controls. The trade name that they use for these batteries is Varta batteries. What happens is when the car stops the engine is switched off and

when the car wants to set off again the accelerator is pressed and the car restarts. The batteries for this job have to be more powerful that the standard lead acid battery and so the AGM battery lead-acid batteries are used.

In my opinion the lead acid battery will be further developed and used on other applications that have not been invented yet, and will still be a player in the crazy mixes of the development of the modern car, their big advantage is that they are almost 100% recyclable, which is more than can be said about the lithium-Ion batteries.

UPS Batteries Have Many Uses-12 Volt 12 Amp are very popular

UPS Batteries Have Many Uses; 12 volt 12 amp in most backup batteries supply systems ?

I would not be exaggerating to say that that the 12 volts 12 amp UPS  (uninterrupted power supply) battery. Will be found in most large offices around the World. The most common usage for this one is as a backup supply source of power. Of course, in the event of a mains power supply failure. When the mains go down. Then the 12 volts 12 amp battery bank kicks in and allows the computers to carry out a proper shutdown. So, saving very valuable data from being destroyed. The UPS battery will be used in very large banks of backup systems .

These UPS Batteries Have Many Uses. Including, backup systems will usually come within a surge circuitry. Also have a built in filter this will protect the circuits and the computer from power surges. These surges are known as transients, spikes and surges and can destroy and even delete data as well as damaging the computer equipment. One of the commonest forms of power surges is lightening, even if an adjacent building is struck then a surge can occur and damage an unprotected computer system, but thanks to the 12 volts 12 amp battery then this will be protected.

“Even entry-level battery backups provide visual and audible alarms based on various states of alert. They also include automatic shutdown software that controls the connected microcomputer via USB port so that if the user happens to be away from the computer when the power fails, the system takes over and initiates safe shutdown procedures before they drain”… http://battery-backup-review.toptenreviews.com/what-exactly-is-a-computer-battery-backup-and-which-one-is-best-.html.

12 volt 12 amp batteries also fit many mobility scooters

This 12 volts 12 amp is also now used to power some smaller mobility scooters. As a result, it takes 2 these 12 volts 12 amps to make a 24-volt system . UPS Batteries Have Many Uses and here is some very important information about the care of your 12 volts 12 amps when they are not in use and during the winter months from an excellent website called www.easymedonline.com…

Always store your batteries FULLY CHARGED.

– Check all batteries once a month and recharge as needed.
– Wet ones can hold their charge up to 3 months.
– Sealed ones can hold a charge for up to 6 months.
– When storing a chair or scooter for more than 2 weeks, charge them and then disconnect them.
– Avoid hot and cold extremes when storing.

What is the proper way to store batteries for the Winter?

A: Store them fully charged. Check them once a month and recharge as needed. Sealed ones can hold their charge from 6 to 12 months. Remember, if storing your chair for longer than a couple of weeks, it’s best to charge them up  and then disconnect them”…http://www.easymedonline.com/more/batteries.html

063 Car battery Online-is Still one of the Most Popular batteries sold by BatteriesOnTheWeb

063 Car battery Online

Importantly, your regular car battery is still the thing that keeps your car electrics going. Especially, when your cars engine is switched off. Significantly, your battery is the thing that your car relies on. Especially the cars ECU (computer). Accordingly, when you switch off the engine and park it up for the night. Without being charged up, your 063 Car battery just does not work.

Just another reason why it is important to have your battery checked. Hence, at regular intervals such as service times. Including a check on your cars charging system. Of course a battery test is usually free of charge at your local independent garage Naturally, you can find your nearest centre online, by clicking the link.

By testing your 063 Car battery at regular intervals. So, you should avoid having a flat battery. Specially, when this always happens at perhaps a crucial time or an inconvenient place. Subsequently, your Car battery always goes flat where you don’t want it to. Perhaps, say in the supermarket car park. Particularly, when you have an appointment with the doctor. So a regular battery check should avoid all of this.

When buying a new 063 Car battery

Always importantly check out the specifications on the new battery that you require. Although, the part number may be the same !Then the number of amps may not be the same. For an example newer car models now have much more electrical components built into them.

Requiring much more power from the same size battery. The 063 battery came out years ago and was sold with a capacity of 35 amps. As a result was fitted onto early Vauxhall Nova’s and Corsas as well as early “British Leyland” cars. Such as the BMC 1978 Mini that I used to ownReplacing the very common 038 battery which was very popular at that time. In brief, the 063 Car battery was made more compact. Fitting into the smaller car models of the day more easily.

However as time went on and emissions became an issue. Cars were increasingly fitted out with more electrics and emissions control computers (ECU’s) . So the amps were increased to 44 amps. Of course on on exactly the same battery casing size, the 063 Car battery.

063 car battery now up to 44 amps

The up to date 063 Car battery is still the most popular car battery on the market in the small to medium size car market, but the difference is in the power. The power output is now up to 44 amps almost twice the capacity of the earlier 35 amp battery. This is a very important point when buying an 063 battery! Make sure that you have ordered the right capacity of your battery.

All you have to do is to replace the battery with the exact same car battery. Of course the same one that you have on the car. So, do not let people kid you that they are all the same ? They are not. Modern cars now charge and dis-charge at a higher voltage. In short, it is important that you get the right battery for the job. The new higher capacity Varta 063 heavy duty 52 amp car battery is now available online .

Varta Batteries Driven BMW…All Electric of 1972 – Top Gear

Varta Batteries Driven BMW

Varta Batteries Driven BMW powered 1602e was BMW’s first EV, and grand-daddy to the i8. Here’s its strange story

This was a surprise to me when i read about it?

So, I knew that battery driven cars are nothing new. But have never heard of BMW getting involved, and using Varta Batteries . Of course scientists are now developing the electric cars . Driven by a different type of battery. But, BMW apparently used the only technology available! The good old lead acid battery and Varta ones to boot.

Electric cars driven by batteries are nothing new?

Consequently, many car manufacturers have tried to produce the electric cars. Going back to the 1800’s. One of the efforts came from Ferdinand Porsche, the guy who started the Porsche car company.

So, he developed an electric car known as the P1 as far back as 1898. Consequently, he also developed what could have been the first hybrid in the world a car that was powered by a gasoline engine and a battery.

Thomas Edison also thought that electric cars were going to be the future and was always trying to improve a better batter to drive cars. Edison teamed up with Henry Ford to try to create lower cost electricity. Bur it was Ford who scuppered Edison’s plans by bringing out the model T, which would run on a petrol engine and not battery driven.

The cost of the cars driven on a gas engine was half the price of a battery driven model.

The gas engine cars out sold the battery cars and this was amplified even more when the starter motor was invented and it became far easier to start a car by pressing a button, than by hand cranking the engine to start the car.

Petrol became more popular! As oil was discovered in more and more of the American States. This meant that the new roads that were been built. Of course, all across the States and were serviced by petrol filling stations . All across the country! Giving the gas powered engine an even bigger advantage to the consumers. Who were buying these more affordable cars in droves. A new freedom had arisen ! People were wanting to explore the new road networks that were opening up all over America.

Petrol shortages spark interest in  electric vehicles driven by batteries

Nothing much happened in battery development for years. Bringing me up to the time when I became interested in cars. Working as an apprentice mechanic.Of course, here in Yorkshire UK, my home county.

The 1960’s and 1970’s the world was shook by the Arab Oil Embargo (1973). Which worried the USA about importing oil. So, in 1976 they passed a law authorising the development of battery driven electric and hybrid vehicles. Specifically, nothing new here, what goes round comes round?

General motors developed an urban electric car, in 1973

So, the American Motor company developed an electric battery driven jeep. To be used by the American post office in 1975. Of course, things were starting to move . But the problem of distance traveled on one charge, was rearing its ugly head. The same old problem that we are getting in today’s Lithium-Ion battery power trains.

Interest in the electric car then slowed down. Significantly, there were no further developments to name. As a result, regarding battery powered cars. That was until the 1990’s came along and the desire for cleaner air and pollution controls, Increased the interest once again, about developing the battery driven electric car.

Governments were introducing clean air acts and implementing emission controls on the car manufacturers. Unknown to the public which includes myself, governments were throwing billions of dollars in the surge to develop a better battery that would drive the electric vehicle of the near future. Oil prices were rising after the relatively cheap price of gasoline in the 1990,s and a similar scenario to the 1970’s was now emerging.

The world needed electric cars powered by batteries again

The race was on between the huge car companies in different parts of the world. Toyota of Japan was the first car maker to make big inroads. Into the electric car and hybrid car developments. In 1997 they introduced the Prius. Which became the first mass produced hybrid car. So, a car with a petrol engine and a battery train. This to me is still the better option than the elusive all battery driven car. Toyota used a nickel metal hydride battery to power the Prius. So, as I stated earlier the gas prices were starting to rise, which made this car a very popular choice for consumers.

Honda had also produced their new hybrid in 1999

Expressly, the developments after that are another story. This article gives my readers a little insight of a period. Hence, before the development of the new technology batteries. Such as the popular Lithium-Ion batteries, that scientists are still trying to perfect to this day.

Leisure battery LV22MF Numax leisure- Batteries can give you as much as 150 Amps per hour?

Leisure battery LV22MF Numax leisure

LV22MF Numax leisure Batteries are amongst the best batteries available to the Caravan and Motorhome community, not forgetting the lucky people who own a river craft or a canal pleasure boat.

All these types of vehicles require a battery. Or a number of batteries to supply them with electricity.Especially, where there are no mains power points. Usually in the wilderness or some isolated canal boat moorings.

Numax are not necessarily Cheap Leisure Batteries. But they are one of the more reliable battery products. Of course, for this usage on the market. In fact I have only ever seen one faulty Numax battery. As a result, since I started selling then six years ago.

Leisure battery LV22MF Numax leisure

The Leisure market battery products are always on show. Hence, at some of the country’s top leisure and outdoor shows. Because of this the Numax name has become very popular. Also because of the internet, the Numax Caravan battery has actually come down in price. So, is now one of our best selling products that we offer online.

The most popular battery is the XV31MF battery. This is an 110 amp one and is our best seller at the time of me writing this article. The number two, Leisure Battery is the  LV26MF , which is a 100 amp battery.

Following close behind is the Leisure battery LV22MF Numax leisure

This is a 75 amp battery and is used for the person who goes away at weekends and the occasional two weeks holiday. When the first Motorhome Battery came out, the industry used the regular car battery; in fact the 100 amp leisure battery was derived from the 250 car batteries. The car battery was modified with thicker calls to hold more charge and was then known as the LV26MF battery for leisure use. The original 250 car battery was a starter battery and had to provide the power up front to start a car.

As the leisure market began to grow, then so did the size of the caravans and motorhomes. This meant that bigger batteries were needed, because portable televisions and fridges could fit into the larger vehicles. In the early days these came in the form of truck batteries, which were the largest batteries available. This led to the development of the XV31MF leisure battery which once again had thicker plates to store more power, as the truck battery was a starter battery and needed the power up front to start the vehicle.

Leisure battery LV22MF Numax leisure

One thing that has surprised me is that more people do not connect 2 x LV22MF batteries together. These batteries are LV22MF Numax leisure Batteries and connected together in “Parallel” will give you a 75 x 2 capacity which is 150 amps, a much larger capacity than a XV31MF battery would. The main criteria is that you use the two exactly same leisure batteries and the same number of amps, the system will remain at 12 volts and in my opinion would be worth looking into.

Vintage Car Batteries–1932 Austin Lichfield Pickup spotted on display in a Garden Centre

Vintage Car Batteries

Old Austin spotted while delivering Vintage Car Batteries in the area.

I was very surprised when I called into a local garden centre for a coffee at there coffee shop. I love old and vintage cars and in actual fact we sell the 6 volt hard rubber Vintage Car Batteries that fit these old vehicles. To my amazement I saw an old vintage car forming the part of a sort of farm and country display in the corner of one of the glass houses selling household ware.

Luckily, I always keep my small camera with me. Therefore, and were able to take a couple of pictures for my blog . The car turned out to be a pick-up and was an Austin Lichfield Pick-up from 1932. hence, the car is very rare. Thus, I was really pleased to come across such a wonderful old car.

Morris Minor Vintage Car Batteries delivered

These Austin vans and pick-ups were known as “tillies” according to the article from “Graces guide”. I successfully delivered the Vintage Car Batteries which were for an old split screen Morris Minor 1000.

“A virtually new car was launched in 1939 with the body shell incorporating the floor to give a semi-unitary structure. The car was completely restyled by Argentine born Ricardo “Dick” Burzi who had joined Austin from Lancia in 1929.

In all during the war 53,000 of the saloons, pick-ups and vans, the last two unofficially known as “Tillies”, were made. With peace in 1945 a change was immediately made to civilian production but with the post-war financial crisis they were nearly all exported with the first one arriving in the United States in July 1945. So, 038 batteries are now used for many classic cars.

The van also re-appeared post-war with a slightly larger 1,237-cc engine”Read more on this old and very rare car at http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Austin:_Ten

Car Battery Handling-Take Care when you handle your “CAR BATTERIES”

Post Updated 23rd Dec 2013-30th Oct 2020

Take care when Car Battery Handling

Let me first say that in 40 years of selling car batteries. Both to the public also in my garage environment and now we sell batteries onlineFortunately, I have never (touch wood) seen a single accident. Of course, apart from the holes that appear in my staffs work wear. Long ago we did not wear any protective clothing when filling and charging batteries. Although we were aware of the problems that could have occurred.

These days with the advent of “health and safety”. Naturally, we take all precautions to protect our staff. I feel that I should point out a few things when Car Battery Handling. So, we wear full protective gowns with gloves. Including, goggles whenever we are charging batteries. Training all the staff in the procedures and first aid. This is important to us because we handle thousands of batteries a year.

Most people who have a 12 Volt car Battery delivered. Firstly will receive the new battery in a well packed box packed. Including, some kind of protective filling we at batteriesontheweb use polystyrene and cardboard box for this purpose , (after a few years of experimenting we find that this is the best medium to use).

When the battery is unpacked

So, you will find that it is protected with a polythene bag, sometimes when the weather is cold the plastic bag can be slightly wet this is only condensation and the battery will be fine after a wipe down with a damp old piece of cloth, just remove the bag carefully and check if the battery is the one you ordered.

Please do not smoke or have any naked flames anything near when Handling your Car Battery. Because Leisure Batteries give off a gas that is explosive and dangerous. When Handling Car Battery I would recommend that the unpacking is done outside or in your garage, if you must unpack in the house please put something down (old newspapers should be fine) to lift the battery onto the paper to protect your furnishings from any dried acid on the battery, lead acid will destroy clothing and furnishings and could burn the skin,(if possible wear latex gloves when handling) and certainly wash your hands thoroughly after handling. All these things are common sense just remember that the batteries need handling with care, please do not be alarmed by this advise as it is just common sense and as I have said earlier.

Car Battery Handling  can be very heavy ? Test the weight before you attempt

To lift.

Even the smaller car batteries are really heavy to handle. So,  please use your common sense. Batteriesontheweb handle hundreds of batteries a day and by using common sense and following simple rules get by without injury to our staff. Leisure Battery- to Leeds University ends in a nice surprise?

Post Updated 23rd Dec 2013+ October 29th 2020

Wanted to buy 110amp leisure battery

Leisure Battery; When the phone rang for the hundredth time on Thursday it was a call from a well spoken gentleman with a well educated Scottish accent. He wanted to buy a  leisure battery to go

into his motorhome. He chose us from our battery web site www.batteriesontheweb.co.uk, and also the fact that we were from Halifax and we were not too far away, as prompt delivery was important.

He turned out to be head of the Devonshire Hall Cumberland Road, part of Leeds University. The university had broke up for the Easter term and he found out that he had a dead battery and therefore required a new one.

I arranged to meet him outside the Devonshire halls at 8.30 am on the following morning with his new battery, as he said that he has a tight schedule. This is just an example of the personal service that we give to our online battery service. While I was waiting I took a walk through the gate into the Devonshire halls outside area. I could not believe my eyes at the outstanding beauty of the building what a shame it is hidden away from the public, the students are so lucky to study in such outstanding architecture of the buildings.

Sent back old leisure  battery for re-cycling

The guy arrived a little late and he asked if I would drop the new leisure battery off at the back of the buildings into his garage, I obliged accordingly but when he opened his garage door there was a second surprise, the guy owned a 1967 BMC 1100 car in white. He pulled out the car so that I could take a photo for my blog, and gave me two old batteries for re-cycling, This was a great trip out for me (how sad).

Caravan Tyre Problems-Christmas holiday season time again to check your tyres?

Caravan Tyre Problems

Caravan Tyre Problems; Information about your Caravan Tyres

Caravan Tyre Problems start with your tyres that must be inflated, checked and adjusted and only when the tyres are cold before your road trip heats them up.

In fact. We recommend that the owners of trailers and Touring Caravans. Should take off the complete wheels. Thus, and bring them to the garage or auto

Centre. Hence. that they use and have them checked by a qualified member of the staff. For this reason, this will ensure the complete unit will be  verified correctly. Hence, with the safest possible outcome for you and your caravan. Alleviating any  Tyre Problems

The wheels will be checked for rust and alloy flaking off. The tyres will be removed from the wheels and checked for any internal cuts or other damage. This is very important. Naturally, as hidden damage can turn a simple journey into a nightmare scenario. Especially, when going down a motorway at sixty miles per hour. Thus, and losing complete control of the caravan due to a tyre failure.

Caravan Tyre Problems

The tyre fitter will check the outside of the tyres for damage. Hence, to the tread and the side walls. So, for cuts and cracks and look for signs of Caravan Tyre Problems. Also important is to check the age of the tyre. This can be easily done by an expert fitter. They do become out of date after six years. For this reason, and are affected by ageing in the rim areas.

Cracks start to appear round the rim area. Hence, due to them being stood in the Sun. For long hours during the Sunnier months and in time, the “carbon black”, that is used in the rubber mix of the tyre. Thus, starts to break down. For this reason, and deep cracks begin to form around the rim area and will eventually join up to create a very dangerous hazard.

Caravan Tyre Problems

Indeed this is one of the most common causes for tyre failures on caravans and trailer tyres. Any with cracks and cuts should be scrapped with immediate effect and replaced with a new tyre. Finally, if everything is in good order, the air pressures and valves should be checked to the correct readings for your type of vehicle and trailer. One of the best brands of motor-home tyres are made by Michelin and are made especially for the job with all the correct weight markings.

Another important point. Is to have the vehicle load index checked. Thus, for the weight that you will be carrying. To make sure that they conform. Hence, to your caravan or trailers recommended weight carrying capacity. Many trailer owners make this mistake and fit the wrong type. Some of the larger heavier vehicles require more heavy duty ones to give the additional loading; your tyre dealer will advise you on the correct fitments by recommending you fit re-enforced or larger ply rated tyres, six or even 8ply tyres are available.

Finally, to sum up, you should have your tyres checked by a tyre expert

Try to stick to new tyres if you can afford. Always load your vehicle and trailing vehicle evenly. Thus, to give a more even weight distribution across the axle. Make sure that your tyres have the correct load rating. Hence, for the full weight index of your caravan or motor home, and also necessary fix yourself up with a spare wheel that has a tyre to match the ones you have on the vehicle. Most Caravan Tyre Problems are common sense, but we still see piles of wood on the side of our roads in the summertime due to blow outs.

Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre offer car and van servicing and repairs to all makes of vehicles.  We also sell Michelin Caravan Tyres online from our website www.pellontyres.co.uk by using the tyre

selector and choosing your tyre size. We offer courtesy cars to local motorists who need to go to work and leave their car with us for work doing. We are also an official MOT testing station .

038 Car Batteries- Now fitted out with a new label style, This helps with warranty dates

Lucas 038 Car Batteries from Lucas

So, hear in the UK, then “lucas” has always been a well known name in the field of car electrics. Including the battery range! Unfortunately the original company split up. Subsequently, the different sections were sold off!  Or indeed the brand names were sold off. This was the same with the Battery section of the company. So, the Lucas battery franchise was originally bought by Energy batteries. Registered in the Corby area. Unfortunately Energy went into the hands of the receivers. The Lucas franchise was then bought by Manbat in 2009. Thus trading its own battery products under the acquired name of Lucas. Although Lucas do not make their own Car Batteries! Manbat source batteries of excellent quality for their premium Car Batteries range and the Classic range of batteries. We  at Batteriesontheweb are the Yorkshire dealers for these excellent products.

Lucas batteries

“Now, in its most noticeable move to date, Manbat has made fundamental changes to the existing packaging. Core to the re-branding objective was to make the Lucas name and green colour scheme far more prominent than on the previous design, which only carried a small Lucas logo with a hint of green. The new design however, brings the green that the brand has been historically associated with and the Lucas name to the fore through an attractive design that stands out from the competition and emphasis the brands

The 038 Car Batteries also fits other battery applications. The 038 Car Batteries are used mainly on classic cars. The early mini’s and Austin Alegro cars were all fitted with the 038 Car Batteries. The battery also fitted cars made by Vauxhall cars. This includes the best selling Viva range in the 1960’s and some of the Triumph groups cars. This included the Triumph Spitfires and saloon cars such as the herald and the Vitesse.

Many battery companies change labels every so often. It is a way of telling when a battery was made. This helps them with warranty claims. Many claims are rejected because they can tell how old the label is.
