As the batteries become fully charged and are no longer able to accept any further electrical energy. Consequently, the battery voltage will rise. Of course, when the voltage reaches the regulation level (varies with battery type see below) So, starts to dump power the controller’s lights are a solid red. Naturally, this energy is dissipated as heat into the surrounding environment. Significantly, more or less power is diverted to the dump load. According to how much is being supplied to the battery from the turbine.

Varta Batteries Driven BMW…All Electric of 1972 – Top Gear

Varta Batteries Driven BMW

Varta Batteries Driven BMW powered 1602e was BMW’s first EV, and grand-daddy to the i8. Here’s its strange story

This was a surprise to me when i read about it?

So, I knew that battery driven cars are nothing new. But have never heard of BMW getting involved, and using Varta Batteries . Of course scientists are now developing the electric cars . Driven by a different type of battery. But, BMW apparently used the only technology available! The good old lead acid battery and Varta ones to boot.

Electric cars driven by batteries are nothing new?

Consequently, many car manufacturers have tried to produce the electric cars. Going back to the 1800’s. One of the efforts came from Ferdinand Porsche, the guy who started the Porsche car company.

So, he developed an electric car known as the P1 as far back as 1898. Consequently, he also developed what could have been the first hybrid in the world a car that was powered by a gasoline engine and a battery.

Thomas Edison also thought that electric cars were going to be the future and was always trying to improve a better batter to drive cars. Edison teamed up with Henry Ford to try to create lower cost electricity. Bur it was Ford who scuppered Edison’s plans by bringing out the model T, which would run on a petrol engine and not battery driven.

The cost of the cars driven on a gas engine was half the price of a battery driven model.

The gas engine cars out sold the battery cars and this was amplified even more when the starter motor was invented and it became far easier to start a car by pressing a button, than by hand cranking the engine to start the car.

Petrol became more popular! As oil was discovered in more and more of the American States. This meant that the new roads that were been built. Of course, all across the States and were serviced by petrol filling stations . All across the country! Giving the gas powered engine an even bigger advantage to the consumers. Who were buying these more affordable cars in droves. A new freedom had arisen ! People were wanting to explore the new road networks that were opening up all over America.

Petrol shortages spark interest in  electric vehicles driven by batteries

Nothing much happened in battery development for years. Bringing me up to the time when I became interested in cars. Working as an apprentice mechanic.Of course, here in Yorkshire UK, my home county.

The 1960’s and 1970’s the world was shook by the Arab Oil Embargo (1973). Which worried the USA about importing oil. So, in 1976 they passed a law authorising the development of battery driven electric and hybrid vehicles. Specifically, nothing new here, what goes round comes round?

General motors developed an urban electric car, in 1973

So, the American Motor company developed an electric battery driven jeep. To be used by the American post office in 1975. Of course, things were starting to move . But the problem of distance traveled on one charge, was rearing its ugly head. The same old problem that we are getting in today’s Lithium-Ion battery power trains.

Interest in the electric car then slowed down. Significantly, there were no further developments to name. As a result, regarding battery powered cars. That was until the 1990’s came along and the desire for cleaner air and pollution controls, Increased the interest once again, about developing the battery driven electric car.

Governments were introducing clean air acts and implementing emission controls on the car manufacturers. Unknown to the public which includes myself, governments were throwing billions of dollars in the surge to develop a better battery that would drive the electric vehicle of the near future. Oil prices were rising after the relatively cheap price of gasoline in the 1990,s and a similar scenario to the 1970’s was now emerging.

The world needed electric cars powered by batteries again

The race was on between the huge car companies in different parts of the world. Toyota of Japan was the first car maker to make big inroads. Into the electric car and hybrid car developments. In 1997 they introduced the Prius. Which became the first mass produced hybrid car. So, a car with a petrol engine and a battery train. This to me is still the better option than the elusive all battery driven car. Toyota used a nickel metal hydride battery to power the Prius. So, as I stated earlier the gas prices were starting to rise, which made this car a very popular choice for consumers.

Honda had also produced their new hybrid in 1999

Expressly, the developments after that are another story. This article gives my readers a little insight of a period. Hence, before the development of the new technology batteries. Such as the popular Lithium-Ion batteries, that scientists are still trying to perfect to this day.

Leisure battery LV22MF Numax leisure- Batteries can give you as much as 150 Amps per hour?

Leisure battery LV22MF Numax leisure

LV22MF Numax leisure Batteries are amongst the best batteries available to the Caravan and Motorhome community, not forgetting the lucky people who own a river craft or a canal pleasure boat.

All these types of leisure vehicles require Leisure battery LV22MF Numax leisure. or a number of batteries to supply them with electricity. especially where there are no main power points. Usually in the middle of nowhere or at a remote canal boat mooring.

Numax are not necessarily cheap leisure batteries. But they are one of the more reliable battery products. Of course, for this market usage. In fact, I have only ever seen one faulty Numax battery. As a result, in the six years since I began selling them,

Numax leisure

The Leisure Market battery products are always on display. Hence, at some of the country’s top leisure and outdoor shows Because of this, the Numax name has become very popular. Also because of the internet, the price of the Numax Caravan battery has actually come down. So, this is now one of our best-selling products that we offer online.

The most popular battery is the XV31MF battery. This is a 110-amp model and is our best seller at the time of my writing this article. The LV26MF battery from Leisure Battery is a 100-ampere-hour battery.

The Leisure battery LV22MF is close behind. Numax leisure

This is a 75-amp battery and is used for the person who goes away at weekends and the occasional two-week holiday. When the first motorhome battery came out, the industry used the regular car battery; in fact, the 100-amp leisure battery was derived from the 250-amp car battery. The car battery was modified with thicker cables to hold more charge and was then known as the LV26MF battery for leisure use. The original 250 car battery was a starter battery and had to provide the power up front to start a car.

As the leisure market began to grow, so did the size of the caravans and motorhomes. This meant that bigger batteries were needed, because portable televisions and fridges could fit into the larger vehicles. In the early days, these came in the form of truck batteries, which were the largest batteries available. This led to the development of the XV31MF leisure battery, which once again had thicker plates to store more power as the truck battery was a starter battery and needed the power up front to start the vehicle.

LV22MF leisure battery

One thing that has surprised me is that more people do not connect two LV22MF batteries together. These batteries are LV22MF Numax leisure batteries, and connected together in “parallel” will give you a 75 x 2 capacity, which is 150 amps, a much larger capacity than a XV31MF battery would have. The main criteria is that you use the two exact same leisure batteries and the same number of amps, the system will remain at 12 volts, and in my opinion, it would be worth looking into.

Old Austin spotted while delivering batteries in the area.

I was very surprised when I called into a local garden centre for a coffee at there coffee shop. I love old and vintage cars, and in fact, we sell the 6 volt hard rubber vintage car batteries that fit these old vehicles. To my amazement, I saw an old vintage car forming part of a sort of farm and country display in the corner of one of the glass houses selling household ware.

Luckily, I always keep my small camera with me. Therefore, we were able to take a couple of pictures for my blog . The car turned out to be a pick-up and was an Austin Lichfield Pick-up from 1932. Hence, the car is very rare. Thus, I was really pleased to come across such a wonderful old car.

Morris Minor Vintage Car Batteries delivered

These Austin vans and pickups were known as “tillies,” according to the article from “Graces guide”. I successfully delivered the classic car batteries, which were for an old split screen Morris Minor 1000.

“A virtually new car was launched in 1939 with the body shell incorporating the floor to give a semi-unitary structure. The car was completely restyled by Argentine born Ricardo “Dick” Burzi who had joined Austin from Lancia in 1929.

In all during the war 53,000 of the saloons, pick-ups and vans, the last two unofficially known as “Tillies”, were made. With peace in 1945 a change was immediately made to civilian production but with the post-war financial crisis they were nearly all exported with the first one arriving in the United States in July 1945. So, 038 batteries are now used for many classic cars.

The van also re-appeared post-war with a slightly larger 1,237-cc engine”Read more on this old and very rare car at http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Austin:_Ten

Car Battery Handling-Take Care when you handle your “CAR BATTERIES”

Post Updated 23rd Dec 2013-30th Oct 2020

Take care when Car Battery Handling

Let me first say that in 40 years of selling car batteries. Both to the public also in my garage environment and now we sell batteries onlineFortunately, I have never (touch wood) seen a single accident. Of course, apart from the holes that appear in my staffs work wear. Long ago we did not wear any protective clothing when filling and charging batteries. Although we were aware of the problems that could have occurred.

These days with the advent of “health and safety”. Naturally, we take all precautions to protect our staff. I feel that I should point out a few things when Car Battery Handling. So, we wear full protective gowns with gloves. Including, goggles whenever we are charging batteries. Training all the staff in the procedures and first aid. This is important to us because we handle thousands of batteries a year.

Most people who have a 12 Volt car Battery delivered. Firstly will receive the new battery in a well packed box packed. Including, some kind of protective filling we at batteriesontheweb use polystyrene and cardboard box for this purpose , (after a few years of experimenting we find that this is the best medium to use).

When the battery is unpacked

So, you will find that it is protected with a polythene bag, sometimes when the weather is cold the plastic bag can be slightly wet this is only condensation and the battery will be fine after a wipe down with a damp old piece of cloth, just remove the bag carefully and check if the battery is the one you ordered.

Please do not smoke or have any naked flames anything near when Handling your Car Battery. Because Leisure Batteries give off a gas that is explosive and dangerous. When Handling Car Battery I would recommend that the unpacking is done outside or in your garage, if you must unpack in the house please put something down (old newspapers should be fine) to lift the battery onto the paper to protect your furnishings from any dried acid on the battery, lead acid will destroy clothing and furnishings and could burn the skin,(if possible wear latex gloves when handling) and certainly wash your hands thoroughly after handling. All these things are common sense just remember that the batteries need handling with care, please do not be alarmed by this advise as it is just common sense and as I have said earlier.

Car Battery Handling  can be very heavy ? Test the weight before you attempt

To lift.

Even the smaller car batteries are really heavy to handle. So,  please use your common sense. Batteriesontheweb handle hundreds of batteries a day and by using common sense and following simple rules get by without injury to our staff. Leisure Battery- to Leeds University ends in a nice surprise?

Post Updated 23rd Dec 2013+ October 29th 2020

Wanted to buy 110amp leisure battery

Leisure Battery; When the phone rang for the hundredth time on Thursday it was a call from a well spoken gentleman with a well educated Scottish accent. He wanted to buy a  leisure battery to go

into his motorhome. He chose us from our battery web site www.batteriesontheweb.co.uk, and also the fact that we were from Halifax and we were not too far away, as prompt delivery was important.

He turned out to be head of the Devonshire Hall Cumberland Road, part of Leeds University. The university had broke up for the Easter term and he found out that he had a dead battery and therefore required a new one.

I arranged to meet him outside the Devonshire halls at 8.30 am on the following morning with his new battery, as he said that he has a tight schedule. This is just an example of the personal service that we give to our online battery service. While I was waiting I took a walk through the gate into the Devonshire halls outside area. I could not believe my eyes at the outstanding beauty of the building what a shame it is hidden away from the public, the students are so lucky to study in such outstanding architecture of the buildings.

Sent back old leisure  battery for re-cycling

The guy arrived a little late and he asked if I would drop the new leisure battery off at the back of the buildings into his garage, I obliged accordingly but when he opened his garage door there was a second surprise, the guy owned a 1967 BMC 1100 car in white. He pulled out the car so that I could take a photo for my blog, and gave me two old batteries for re-cycling, This was a great trip out for me (how sad).

Caravan Tyre Problems: Christmas holiday season, check your tyres.

Caravan Tyre Problems

Caravan Tyre Problems

In fact, we recommend that the owners of trailers and touring caravans remove the entire set of wheels. Diligently, and bring them to the garage or auto centre. Hence, they use them and have them checked by a qualified member of the staff. For this reason, this will ensure the complete unit will be verified correctly. Hence, the safest possible outcome for you and your caravan Alleviating any tyre problems

The wheels will be checked for rust and alloy flaking off. The tyres will be removed from the wheels and checked for any internal cuts or other damage. This is very important. Naturally, hidden damage can turn a simple journey into a nightmare scenario. Especially when travelling at sixty miles per hour on a highway. As a result, and due to a tyre failure, losing complete control of the caravan.

Caravan Tyre Problems

The tyre fitter will inspect the tyres for damage on the outside. Of course, to the tread and the side walls. So, check for cuts and cracks and look for signs of caravan tyre problems. Also important is to check the age of the tyre. This can be easily done by an expert fitter. They do become out of date after six years. As a result, and are impacted by ageing in the rim areas.

Cracks start to appear round the rim area. Hence, due to them being stood in the Sun. For long hours during the Sunnier months and in time, the “carbon black”, that is used in the rubber mix of the tyre. Thus, starts to break down. For this reason, and deep cracks begin to form around the rim area and will eventually join up to create a very dangerous hazard.

Caravan Tyre Problems

This is one of the most common causes of tyre failure in motorhomes, and the same rules apply to caravans and trailers. Any with cracks or cuts should be scrapped right away and replaced with a new tyre. Finally, if everything is in good order, the air pressures and valves should be checked to the correct readings for your type of vehicle and trailer.

One of the best brands of motorhome tyres is made by Michelin and is made especially for the job with all the correct weight markings.

Another important point is to have the vehicle load index checked.

Thus, for the weight that you will be carrying, to make sure that they conform. Hence, your caravan or trailer’s recommended weight carrying capacity

Many trailer owners make this mistake and fit the wrong type. Some of the larger, heavier vehicles require more heavy-duty tyres to handle the additional loading; Your tyre dealer will advise you on the correct fitments by recommending you fit reinforced or higher-ply-rated tyres, six or even eight-ply tyres are available.

Finally, to sum up, you should have your tyres checked by a tyre expert

Try to stick with new tyres if you can afford them. Always load your vehicle and the trailing vehicle evenly. Thus, to give a more even weight distribution across the axle, Make sure that your tyres have the correct load rating.

Hence, for the full weight index of your caravan or motor home, it is also necessary to fix yourself up with a spare wheel that has a tyre to match the ones you have on the vehicle. Most Caravan Tyre Problems are common sense, but we still see piles of wood on the side of our roads in the summertime due to blow outs.

Pellon Tyre and Auto-Centre: Caravan Tyre Problems

offers car and van servicing and repairs for all makes of vehicles. We also sell Michelin Tyres online from our website, www.pellontyres.co.uk, by using the tyre selector and choosing your tyre size. We offer courtesy cars to local motorists who need to go to work and leave their car with us for work. We are also an official MOT testing station.

038 Car Batteries- Now fitted out with a new label style, This helps with warranty dates

Lucas 038 Car Batteries from Lucas

So, hear in the UK, then “lucas” has always been a well known name in the field of car electrics. Including the battery range! Unfortunately the original company split up. Subsequently, the different sections were sold off!  Or indeed the brand names were sold off. This was the same with the Battery section of the company. So, the Lucas battery franchise was originally bought by Energy batteries. Registered in the Corby area. Unfortunately Energy went into the hands of the receivers. The Lucas franchise was then bought by Manbat in 2009. Thus trading its own battery products under the acquired name of Lucas. Although Lucas do not make their own Car Batteries! Manbat source batteries of excellent quality for their premium Car Batteries range and the Classic range of batteries. We  at Batteriesontheweb are the Yorkshire dealers for these excellent products.

Lucas batteries

“Now, in its most noticeable move to date, Manbat has made fundamental changes to the existing packaging. Core to the re-branding objective was to make the Lucas name and green colour scheme far more prominent than on the previous design, which only carried a small Lucas logo with a hint of green. The new design however, brings the green that the brand has been historically associated with and the Lucas name to the fore through an attractive design that stands out from the competition and emphasis the brands

The 038 Car Batteries also fits other battery applications. The 038 Car Batteries are used mainly on classic cars. The early mini’s and Austin Alegro cars were all fitted with the 038 Car Batteries. The battery also fitted cars made by Vauxhall cars. This includes the best selling Viva range in the 1960’s and some of the Triumph groups cars. This included the Triumph Spitfires and saloon cars such as the herald and the Vitesse.

Many battery companies change labels every so often. It is a way of telling when a battery was made. This helps them with warranty claims. Many claims are rejected because they can tell how old the label is.

Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries- Absorbed Glass Mat batteries AGM are now a very popular battery

Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries

Many people think that GEL and Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries are the same

Many people buying new golf batteries or mobility batteries. Therefore, believe that the two types of battery are the same. They are very similar.Hence, they are a deep cycle with a low discharge. Because they do not spill they are classed as sealed. Therefore, may be mounted in any position. For this reason, are safe to use in a confined area. Naturally, and may be carried safely.

Absorbed Glass Mat batteries. Are filled with a type of fibreglass material. As expected, that is fitted inside the battery and then soaked with the electrolyte between the batteries plates. Therefore, this makes the battery leak proof. In other words, if the battery casing is broken. Accordingly, then no acid will leak out. This type of battery is also the most popular here in

the UK (in my opinion this is due to the price difference) these are usually much cheaper batteries, in particular with the golfing fraternity.

Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries

GEL batteries have filled a type of silica gel mixed with the electrolyte making a thick jelly that allows the electrons to flow through the plates. Once again as in the other kind, they do not leak when the casing is broken.

One of the most common reasons. Thus, for people using the Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries. Is it can give out a high burst of amps if required to do so. Of course, they can also be charged with a standard battery charger. So, and an alternator if necessary. Also, they have a longer life expectancy. Especially, if these batteries are not fully discharged between discharges. In my opinion, this is a mistake that people make, they fully discharge their batteries too often causing premature failure, I think that people should keep a backup battery as a spare so as to not allow their batteries to become too discharged.

GEL batteries as stated before cost more than Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries

But offer better-working conditions. Especially, in hotter climates. Although, this does not affect us here in the UK. The big problem with gel batteries is that they must be charged correctly. Hence, or failure will follow. If you have a GEL charger then stick to a GEL battery. For this reason, they are designed especially for these types of battery. GEL  should not be charged with an alternator. Unless appropriate adjustments are made. Another battery that is starting to appear in the marketplace. Naturally, is the Lithium-Ion battery. So, watch out for this one.
To conclude. We think that Absorbed Glass Mat. Now has the upper hand and unless you only have an own charger on your golf buggy or mobility scooter you would be better off buying AGM.

Electric Cars More dangerous-China says that the EV-Battery driven cars may be more “Harmful to your Health”.

Electric Cars More dangerous; Power stations not the battery powered cars

Electric Cars More dangerous; A pollution study in China has come to the conclusion. That battery drove cars to cause more pollution than conventionally fueled vehicles. Because the electricity used to charge the cars is so-called “Dirty” fuel. Because the power stations rely on fossil fuels such as coal and gas, to power them.

The study was carried out in no less than 34 cities through out China.

People who are conducting this research are led by Professor Cherry a leading scientist in this field. So, who was helped by Chinese under graduates. He compared the particulate matters that cause the pollution. Which is similar to the test carried out on our cars in the UK on an “MOT TEST” on electric battery drove cars to that in petrol driven vehicles. He conducted the tests in China.  Because, believe it or not, they love electric battery driven cars and cycles and have probably the biggest percentage of battery-powered vehicles in the World. In fact, Chinese battery used cars outnumber regular fueled 12 Volt Battery vehicles by about 2 to 1.

The Police operate many of these cars, post, and local government. It has always been my opinion that Governments have gone about the green effect problem the wrong way. They should have sorted the power stations problem out, long ago. Man of the power plants in the world is fueled, from fuels such as coal and gas. But instead, the power operators chose to hammer the poor motorists. This was done with the costs and by the look of this report to no avail. We are still polluting the Planet and its citizens with countries like China burning 85% of electricity from coal.

To conclude it is a fact that regular petrol which has driven vehicles with modern emission methods are cleaner than electric battery operated cars, and that  Electric Cars More dangerous

What’s your opinion??

To read more of this fascinating story, please click the link bellow.

“They found that the electricity generated to power electric cars caused more particulate matter Car Pollution  than that caused by an equivalent number of petrol driven vehicles. There was no Advantages of Electric Cars.

Particulate matter comes from the combustion of fossil fuels and includes acids, organic chemicals, metals, and soil or dust particles.

Professor Cherry said: ‘An implicit assumption has been that air quality and health impacts are lower for electric cars than for conventional vehicles”…

Power Storage Tesla battery could take your home off the grid with – Inhabitat (blog)

Power Storage

Ever wish you could ditch your electric bill? Tesla is working on a house battery that could help you break up with your expensive utility company, essentially turning any home into an off-grid abode.

Is it legal to run off grid in the USA! I might  sound pessimistic, but what if you are having problems with your battery power storage ?

Battery Power storage will be part of the big energy mix in the future!

This whole scenario of battery Power Storage and off grid electricity! So, is now going above my head? Tesla cars are now claiming that the Lithium-Ion battery unit. Of course, that drives their cars.  Could be used to store solar energy for the average family home for a good three and a  half days. (or should it be nights).

You see I can’t get my head around this fact! Significantly

Regarding the power that we would need to power the average home. Would be cheaper than the power supplied the grid. The total cost of solar panels or wind turbines combined with a large enough battery storage pack, that would adequately cope with all the power that was needed, without totally flattening the batteries and look after itself when the owners were away would surely outweigh the cost of mains electricity You would also need a backup diesel generator, to use as a back- up for your solar system should

I know that there are whole island populations that are now using a solar power electricity system that has a huge battery power storage system that fits into a 20 foot container. The system was set up by Saft a French battery company. Consequently, the island is in the Caribbean group of islands. So can rely on a constant supply of sunshine. But the experts say that these systems can work across most of the world, using the sun that is available to them.

I have seen something similar here in the UK

I am not sure if there are many other battery projects on the go. But the way I see it as a layman, is that all the experts from all the countries are just going there one way, when what is needed is the getting together of heads and experimenting on housing developments that are nothing like the ones today. These developments would be away from the national grid and would be totally environmentally friendly using all the latest materials for insulation, (I see that here in the UK we are starting to revert back to straw as an insulation material).

Importantly, with the homes facing the right way (south) and totally insulated. This in my opinion is going the right way. However, to go further, each development should have its own battery Power Storage system. Which connects all the homes together. The initial electricity will be powered by solar panels and if possible a wind turbine.

In my opinion the problem lies with the fact that everything is based on converting new systems from old. But I do not think this will work. You cannot just disconnect yourself from the grid! Because of many other issues. Including where the old electric cables run. Of course, what if you wanted to sell the house. Because, it will be mixing lots of old problems with new problems. I have solar panels fitted to my roof and think that they look fine. However, I know some people who hate the site of them! I won’t even go into wind-turbines.

I am just scratching the surface here.

We need some good joined up thinking and we need to build proper working experimental housing developments using the latest technology and test it out over a number of years. When I hear Tesla talking about their car battery storing power for home owners it makes me cringe, it would probably capable of this but we should be talking collectively and build whole communities, using the latest methods and a collective battery storage system and not load of individuals using all sorts of mis-match battery storage systems that you can find instruction on how to do, on YouTube.

Most of our towns and cities will always be run off the national grids, for well into the future; our infrastructures are too old to cope with major changes.

There is no doubt in my mind that battery power will be the future, wherever it comes from, but we should get our heads together and build proper sustainable environmentally friendly housing using only the power of the elements, this would be the way forward and if you read this article and know of such experiments taking place, please let me know.

Please note these are the words and opinion of the author (Eric Roberts) only. Neither the author nor the website can be held responsible for any errors or omissions.
