“Where before when a vehicle reached 10 years or 11 years, consumers were thinking of selling it, now they’re thinking of, ‘How can I keep my car going?

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

This is a very in depth articles about car brakes

Un-reasonably,  car brakes are very often taken for granted. So, in other words car owners will just pull into your garage and leave their car. Because there is a banging or rattling noise coming from the front of the car.

This is usually a good indication that the brakes have failed, or are failing ! But brake jobs do follow a pattern.

The spring time is usually the time for our customers car brakes to start going wrong . So, and needing repairing. Of course, in my opinion I think that it is because that drivers use their  brakes. Of course, much more in the winter months and therefore the brake pads and discs .

Drivers almost always wait until the last minute to have them repaired and consequently cause more damage to the brakes.

For example a simple job like a set of brake pads replacing may turn out to be more complicated and end up the car needing new discs, or a seized up brake caliper.

This will result in a larger garage invoice for the customer. The secret is to get a free brake check at your local garage. most garages here in the UK will give a car a free brake check and give the customer a quote for the required work. We are members of the Independent Car Care Centres who also offer a nationwide guarantee throughout the UK and a free brake check on all makes and models of cars.

All this culminates as a good time of year for doing brake work, especially the many older cars that our customers are now hanging on to longer and having them repaired instead of replaced.

Good Windscreen Wipers Important

Good Windscreen Wipers Important

So when our wipers fail then we all know what a nightmare it can be. Especially, combining when driving your car in to the winter sun with a dirty windscreen. I am sure that it happens to us all at one time or another. Of course we all know that the answer is ? Make sure you clean your windshield. Including, all other windows regularly and before any kind of journey.

Naturally this will prevent dirt and grime building up. Making it impossible to see. Because, your window wipers just spread the dirt and grime across your windshield. Possibly, causing obscurity and restricting your view.

Winter time brings added problems when it comes to a clean safe vision. Washer jets often freeze up in winter time. It is important for safeties sake to make sure that your washer jets are clear of any dirt or frost. Hence before setting off on your journey. Jets that be accessed can be cleared of dirt or frost by using a safety pin to clear the hole that the washer fluid comes out of.

Good Windscreen Wipers Important-make sure wiper jets are not blocked?

Some models of cars allow you to adjust the angle which the solution is fired at the windscreen (adjustable jets) So after you have cleared the washers ensure they are at an angle that will get the best overall spray coverage. This is specially important when driving at high speeds on the motorway. We have all been sprayed by other motorists with their spray jets set at the wrong angle.

My advice is to try and aim the jets near the lower central area of your windshield. So that even at high speeds your windshield will get necessary cover. Very often drivers spray every other car but their own?

Ice scrappers are always a handy tool to carry in your glove compartment. This will ensure that you will be able to safely scrape all the ice and snow from your windscreen. A good recommendation is an old credit card. In fact I have used this method myself when caught out away from home in ice and snow.

As well as scraping any snow and ice off of your windows. So, you need to make sure your washer fluid doesn’t freeze on you or worse still run out. In colder weather we have all seen how the  salt on the UK roads mixes with the rain, ice or snow. When this mixture dries, salty deposits can build up on your windscreen and obstruct your view. When your washer bottle freezes or runs out of fluid then you visibility reduces to nothing.

Good Windscreen Wipers Important-Add the correct amount of antifreeze to your washer bottle?

As a result, make sure before any journey you have a full tank of washer fluid and a suitable amount of antifreeze or solution is used. If you are not sure what to do then your local garage would be only too pleased to help you out. If it is a prolonged winter then very often you will not use water at all and just pour the concentrated solution into your washer tank instead.

As I have said earlier in the article, driving in the winter can be made particularly difficult. Especially, due to the low position of the winter sun in the sky. Often dazzling drivers. So you should take care to wear sunglasses (even in winter) pulling  down your sun visor whenever it is required.

Of course drivers should take extra care when driving into the winter sun. Even with a clean spotless screen. Be especially aware of any sudden braking or pedestrians. When the sun is low which is often during the time of day people are driving to or from work.

Good Windscreen Wipers Important-Check before winter arrives

We have all seen drivers struggling to see through dirty windscreen. There is no excuse for it. In fact it is against the law here in the UK. Before winter approaches, I would recommend fitting new wiper blades. If you cant afford new ones then there are simply things you can do using household products. There are several things to use according to the “Tips Bulletin online magazine” Including a simple cup of water mixed with vinegar.

Of course a regular pre winter service on your car would ensure that your wipers and washer tank levels were topped up the correct levels. Ensuring a good start to the winter safety and driving season.

Air Filters-How they Work-Chevy High Performance Magazine

Air Filters

How Air Filters Work

Chevy High Performance Magazine

For performance air filter manufacturers like Air aid, determining the ideal filter design for each vehicle application is a balancing act between optimal flow and packaging constraints.

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

What do CAR AIR FILTERS DO?

So, as we all know, All filters are very important parts of your cars performance system. They help your engine breathe easily by filtering out the dirt and dust that enters your car engine. The car engine sucks in tremendous amounts of air. Importantly, this air must be perfectly clean.

It is amazing what the engine will suck in. Especially, in summer time! Of course, it sucks in millions of insects and dust particles. Including, in autumn and winter! So, apart from dirt and grime, the engine sucks in leaves. Even water from the winter rains. All these things can end up in the engine compartment and eventually would be sucked into the inlet ports. But your air filter stops all this happening.

The cabin filter is most often encased in a plastic holder, or older cars could be made of metal. This casing is a secondary filter safeguard and is sometimes they are shaped like kitchen pans, with the air intake looking like the pan handle, but the more modern cars have them shaped to fit in with the engine compartment. The plastic box has its own filter slits which helps trap larger objects such as leaves.

Dirty filter ready for changing

Air Filters

It is therefore very important to have your car serviced at regular intervals and to make sure that the garage changes the oil and other filters by asking them to see the old ones when you pick the car up. If you do not change the air filter it will slowly clog up with dirt and starve your engine from oxygen.

This will hamper the performance of your car. The biggest problem is in Fuel-injected cars, because a dirty oil filter will hamper the performance of your car. It is great when a customer has just had his car serviced and notices the difference in the cars performance, this is usually because of the new air and oil filters.

Of course all  filters are manufactured by many different companies, but here in Halifax UK we use quality replacement filters on all models.

Braking Problems Highlighted- Check your brakes after the lockdown park up

Braking Problems Highlighted

Braking Problems Highlighted

Of course your cars brakes are really important. Surprisingly, we still get cars presented to us with brake pedals that almost touch the floor of the vehicle! So you would not believe the number of cars that are driving about with insufficient braking power. You really have to press the pedal with all your might to stop the car!

Braking Problems Highlighted-brake fluid levels require regular checks

So, this article comes as yet another reminder to my customers and the motoring public in general. Regular servicing ensures that your brake levels , including your master cylinder are checked. Of course not only checked but topped up tot he correct level. At the moment I an writing this important post in the middle of the “covid 19” pandemic.

As a result millions of cars have been parked up and stood down. We were all told to stay at home to fight this terrible virus. Vehicles were no doubt neglected. Consequently, braking systems for ne reason or another would have become “spongy”. This is due to air getting into the brake system for one reason or another. Especially when the brakes were not used.

As I am writing this there will be motorists who will remember having to pump the brake pedal to enable them to get a good braking response. So, in my opinion I would recommend that you should call into your local independent garage and at least have a brake check. Preferably though as part of a service.

I have personally experienced brake failure and believe me it is no fun when you press the brake pedal and the car does not stop.

MOT testing back on track

Another thing effected by the government lockdown was a suspension of MOT testing. Because people were in lockdown then the government in there wisdom decided to make my life even more miserable by suspending MOT testing. However now that this period is over then cars will still have to be tested. Backlogs are inevitable as thousands of motorists will try book their cars into their favorite garages. This will be a great time to take advantage of one of the deals that small garages can offer. For example, here at pellon Autocentre we will offer the customer an MOT test and service for just £100.

naturally this will also alleviate any anxiety about the cars brakes. As they will be thoroughly check on the service and then sanctioned on the MOT.

Brake Problems

Brake problems can be difficult to diagnose, but most drivers encounter these common symptoms: your brake pedal feels soft or mushy, when braking, your foot

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

Master cylinder brakes  fluid may need checking at regular intervals

This Brake Problems video and article written by Joyce Blay is well worth looking at. We in the garage and Autocentre sector are always advising the motorists. Of course, about how they should look after their cars. However, we cannot over stress the important of the cars braking system. Including, how important it is to have your brakes checked. By a professional mechanic or your local garage to avoid future Brake Problems.

The levels that are checked under your bonnet (hood) . Importantly, will include the level in your master cylinder. The lack of brake fluid in the Brake Master Cylinders will lead to spongy brakes and if not corrected will end up in Brake Problems and even brake failure.

Brake Problems

So have these levels checked and if required you may need a complete brake fluid change. This is something else that is recommended by the car manufacturers at intervals. So it is well worth checking to see what intervals this job should be done at. Also if you are topping up the master cylinder yourself, make sure you use the recommended type of fluid for your model, some are different to others, your user’s manual will tell you which fluid to use. These procedures may help eliminate any braking problems for the future!

brake revolution

Of course as time has gone by then brakes have become much more complicated. So one of big advances has been the introduction of ABS to our braking systems. Important to realise that in my life time then braking systems have improved beyond recognition. That is to say that when I was an apprentice mechanic then most regular cars only had drum brakes fitted front and rear.

Later cars that were in the upper class bracket such as Mercedes were fitted with disc brakes at the front. Developments were coming out of the racing car circuits. Consequently, technology would be passed from the racing circuit onto the every day regular cars. Motor racing sped up the developments of all aspects of the modern cars. Up to the latest developments! Including, the introduction of the AEB (Automatic Emergency Braking). So, this system will detect a potential vehicle impact and automatically apply the braking system.

To be truthful I am not sure how this is going to work but I am sure that it will be another brake system success.

MOT Test Combined with Car Servicing

Unlike an MOT test, servicing is not a legal requirement for your vehicle. However, you will probably find that regular servicing can help to keep everything.

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

We all must be responsible for our cars servicing and MOT test

Sometimes I find it a great shame. Incredibly,  that we in the motor trade. Insistently, have to keep harping on about servicing your cars. One of the main excuses in recent times! Of course, has been the recession. Recently, car drivers just haven’t had any spare cash to spend on their vehicles. Consequently, we have all seen people just putting £10’s worth of fuel into their cars at the filling station? Ridiculous, but true !

In my opinion I think that these people should have some kind of a budget. A sort of “piggy bank” and save to have their vehicle serviced. Including any mechanical work required when it goes in for its annual MOT test. Incidentally it is estimated that 4.7 million miss their mot testing date. I am sure that drivers either just flaunt the law or are not aware that driving your

car without a valid MOT test certificate is an offense reference section 47 of the 1988 Road Traffic Act.

Also driving without an MOT test will make your insurance invalid and you may receive a fine of up to £1000. Is it really worth it, when you can have an MOT test and a service for most average family saloons for around £150? If you are not sure where you can go for your vehicle serviced you should go online and look for your nearest local independent garage they will offer you excellent service at a fair price.

Once you have had your MOT test and service you should be safer for another year, although I recommend that you have an engine oil and filter change in between the tests to be on the safe side. Also do not forget check your levels at regular periods, say once a week and top them up when required.

Here we are now at the back end of 2020, nearing Christmas time and the price of fuel has plummeted. The only problem is that the price of oil and petrol is not following as fast. The experts say that it may take a little longer for this to take place, but i was just wondering if services on cars wold be also coming down. I am not so sure , but i suspect so.

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY- Regularly Checking your Cars Brakes Could Save Your Life ?

Home » All Car Servicing » Page 3

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY

Along with your tyres , your car brakes are the most important (and sometimes most neglected) part of your car. I have been guilty of neglecting my brakes. Especially, when I was a young man. When I was a young mechanic, I borrowed a car from my then boss Peter.

Peter said that I could but I must check the car brakes. Also. the engine levels before setting off on my journey. I was heading for Blackpool. So, a seaside resort on the West coast of the UK. On our return home we started to pass through a town called Preston.

I was doing the statutory speed of 30 mph and was approaching a pedestrian crossing. Of course I should have had to stop. But, when I pressed the brake pedal. Then there was nothing there.Hence, the pedal went straight to the floor boards.

Consequently, I had to swerve the car to miss a guy walking across the crossing. Ending up on the pavement (side-walk). I rapidly pumped the pedal and managed to get some brakes. Thus, on the pedal. Luckily, the vehicle came to a stop. My  friends and I managed to push the car to a garage filling station. Of course, a hundred yards down the road.

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY

I lifted the bonnet (hood) only to find that the car brake fluid was at zero level.So. in the fluid reservoir. I felt a cold chill down my spine. Because, I remembered what my boss Peter had said. Just the day before we set off. We managed to buy some Tesco Brake Fluid and topped up the reservoir.

The car brakes pumped about half way up. Luckily the car would stop when I pressed the pedal. So, we limped home back to Yorkshire UK.Subsequently, a rather terrifying experience. Of course, which I vowed would never happen again. Lessons were learned that day. As a result, I am going to spell out a few important things about the care of your brakes. Hence, for you to understand. Before you embark on a journey or indeed at any time that you own a car.

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY-Your brakes are a life saver

The British MOT test has been a great step forward towards the safety of our cars and our roads. When your car is having it’s annual MOT test we check everything on that car ( to the  VOSA MOT test specifications). One of the problems of old was the checking of your car brake pipes.

Brake pipes connect all your four wheels braking system and the cylinders and brake pedal, and are fixed under the car, exposed to all the elements. They are protected by a special coating of wax-oil or sometimes just grease.

Despite all the protection. The Corroded Brake Pipes would rust and then start to leak the brake fluid, eventually causing the brakes to fail, similar to what happened to me in Preston.

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY for corrosion

The MOT test makes sure that all your brake pipes (lines) are in good working order and if not the car will fail the test and the pipes will have to be replaced. If you are not sure about the condition of your brake pipes you can get them checked out at your local independent garage, free of charge, or the local garage that you use at the moment.

You must always check the brake fluid in the reservoir under your bonnet and top it up if required with the correct fluid. Check your brake pedal it should feel nice and solid, if it goes too far down then have yours checked by a professional garage or mechanic, don’t take risks, you should not have to pump your pedal to get a good brake.

You brake fluid should be changed every so often, this can be done when you have your car serviced, your local garage will be able to ascertain when, by looking it up on his service
computer for your model of car, we use the Autodata system for checking out the fluid change times.

CHECK YOUR CAR BRAKES REGULARLY Including the Fluid Levels

Also you should check your Disc Brakes and Car Brake Pads. These are the parts that constantly wear out and need replacing with Brake Pipe Kits when they get down to a certain thickness.

When the pads wear down to the the metal part of the pads, then this is when you can hear a loud grinding noise that frightens the driver to death. Once again if this happens then you should have your car brakes checked by a professional mechanic or your local garage.

Once again if you have your car serviced when you have your annual MOT test then your brakes will be checked and should be fine for the next year to come. If your brake pedal does not feel right or goes further down than it should before you get a brake, then have the car checked out do not continue to drive before the car is checked by an expert.

Mazda 5 crawls in with Brakes Problem making a bad Grinding noise?

Home » All Car Servicing » Page 3

Mazda 5

Mazda 5 brakes make grinding noise

One of the benefits of been an independent garage is the huge diversity of cars that pass through our doors, and our ability to service and fix most of them. I say most of them, because we do have some problems with electrical faults, that can’t be detected without specialists equipment and so in that case we have a couple of different guys who are mobile  electrical specialists. Otherwise we can cope with most car problems.

One popular car to run about Halifax UK, is the Mazda 5. The most popular ones being the different Mazda sports cars, that in my opinion were a similarity to our own beloved MGB sport cars, they all look very much alike.

Mazda’s have come a long way since the 1960’s, when they were inspired by the development of the NSU and the Wankel engine. I remember this little car very well; a mechanic friend bought one and showed me the strange engine that was belt driven. The car was also very fast once it got going and the guy used to frighten me to death: eventually the engine blew up and the car was scrapped.

Mazda were very interested in the German technology

So the Japanese car company formed a business alliance. Of course, with the German car company NSU. In 1967 Mazda started to make a limited production model called the Cosmo Sport and eventually became the sole makers of the Wankel engine, this was only because all the other car companies had given up making the rotary engine.

The Mazda car company was beginning to get a good reputation and started exporting their cars from Japan, both the rotary engine and the standard type piston engine layout, all over the World. These cars were primarily the rotary engine cars, especially the RX models, the RX 2, 3 and 4, were the biggest sellers.

In recent years many other very reputable models were introduced to the UK car market and this brings me onto the Mazda 5 that came into us with brake problems. The customer

originally rang us up for a Brake Replacement Cost, but we explained that we could not tell what the problem was until we removed all the wheels and inspected the Car Brakes including the Car Brake Pads, to see what the problem was.

The customer was a lady with a couple of children and we promised to do the best price for her. This Mazda 5 is a very fuel efficient car with great style and with the performance is a very desirable people carrier and so is very popular as a family car.

The Mazda was left with us for the day with a promise to call the lady with a Brake Repair Cost, as soon as the problem was assessed.

We pulled the car onto the car-ramp and removed all the wheels for a brake inspection

The original problem on the Mazda 5 was that the car brakes were making a terrible grinding noise and we soon found out why? The front brake caliper’s was half seized up. This means that only one of the front Brake Pads were actually working. The one pad that was doing the work wore out quicker than the other pad. Until it went down to the bare metal. Hence, this is what had made the terrible grinding noise. From the front of the car.

The other front Disc Brakes were also in need of replacing and so we gave the lady an estimate and we were given the go ahead to do the work on the Mazda 5. Luckily the brake caliper could be freed off, using a little heat and did not need replacing. All the other parts, the discs and pads were replaced. The rear brakes were in good condition and only required a clean-up and the drums replacing.

This type of problem is a common fault with brake discs. Thus, is one of the reasons that you should have your car and your brakes serviced. Of course, here in the PellonAutocentre Halifax area we service car brakes on most car makes and models. In a service one of the things that we do is to clean and grease the caliper’s. So that they do not seize up and frighten the customer to death. Especially, when they hear the dreaded grinding noise of metal on metal. Naturally, when their brake pads wear out.

The job was completed and the happy customer picked up her car in the evening.

Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre offer Mazda 5 car and van servicing and repairs to all makes of vehicles. Also selling tyres online from our website www.pellontyres.co.uk by using the tyre selector and choosing your tyre size. How to beat the sexist mechanics: Servicing tips for women to avoid being ripped …

Women who know little about car repairs can make sure they aren’t being ripped off by their mechanic by simply suggesting a price for the work.

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

Most women customers are very confident when buying anything including having their car repaired. We now even have more female

Mechanics

So in general then I think that the garages who try to deceive female customers off. Of course, will be dishonest and also try to pull the wool over the eyes of all their customers ? men and women. “THESE GARAGES ARE A FOOL TO THEMSELVES”. So, our lady customers know when they are not been told the truth.

Hence, if the price looks and sounds wrong then it probably will be wrong. We are not now members of Unipart Car Care Centres. Having regular Servicing tips meetings and contacts with other garages.

It is our experience that our lady customers make up 60% of our total customer base. So, if a garage wants to keep this very important customer base then the ladies have to be treat in the correct manner especially by our mechanics..

Female customers look for a trustworthy garage

Believe me the ladies know what they are on about and would not go to the garage with their car that they did not trust. So, if they thought that they had been ripped off, they would not go back there a second time. Another addition to this story is that we now have an increasing number of female mechanics, with many Motor Mechanic Jobs going to females.

Incidentally, who are just as competent as male mechanics and are probably more sensible. A strange thing happened the other day? a lady customer who was in for an MOT test asked us the price of a service to go with the MOT test. The lady agreed to the price and we duly did the work; The lady was happy with the job and the price paid and went home, satisfied. About an hour later the ladies husband rang us up and told us in no uncertain words that we had RIPPED his wife off. WOW.

HERE IS A SECOND OPINION…

“You don’t ‘suggest’ a price to the garage looking to do the work, whether you know a bit or not. There is a price for the part/s and a price for the labour. The part/s you can research, but they may be privy to discounts etc you aren’t due to trade links, and the labour charge you either agree to or don’t – you could dispute the number of hours charged, but if you think it would take a shorter time, do it yourself. What a daft, American study from three probably biased and slightly bitter women who have fell foul, in their opinion of the motor trade”…
