Potholes Strike Again in Halifax – Another Victim for Pellon Tyres!

It’s been another crackingly busy week here at Pellon Tyre & Autocentre in Halifax, and once again our old enemy has been keeping us on our toes — potholes. Honestly, the state of the roads around Halifax and the wider Calderdale area seems to get worse by the week. Whether you’re heading down Queens Road, cutting over Mount Tabor, or travelling up towards Sowerby Bridge, you’re guaranteed to meet a crater or two big enough to swallow a wheel.

And once again, the potholes have been claiming victims.

This week we saw a right mix of damage: bent steering arms, damaged alloy wheels, and a surprising number of broken coil springs — the sort of stuff you’d expect after a winter of icy mornings and frozen tarmac. The combination of cold snaps and endless traffic is playing havoc with the road surface.

One job in particular stood out: a tidy little Honda Jazz, brought in by a lady from the Skircoat Green area. She’d heard a loud rattling and banging from the front of her car, especially when going over uneven roads — which, let’s face it, is pretty much every road around Halifax these days!

Diagnosing the Honda Jazz: halifax-pothole-spring-repair

When she rolled onto the forecourt, she told us the noise had started suddenly after hitting what she described as “a hole the size of Shibden Valley”. She wasn’t far off — there’s a nasty pothole near Salterhebble that’s been catching drivers out all winter.

Dale got the Honda up on the ramp, gave it a good check over, and there it was:
a cleanly snapped front coil spring.

To be honest, we weren’t surprised. Cold weather weakens already stressed metal, and a sudden hit from a pothole is often the final straw. Springs on smaller cars like the Jazz tend to go with a real “crack” when they break, and the loose end rattles around every time the wheel moves.

Once we sourced and fitted a new spring, gave the car a quick once-over, and made sure the tracking was all right, she was good to go. The lady was relieved—she’d been worried she’d done something serious—and she headed home happy, especially now the temperature is dropping again. Nobody wants to be stranded in the cold with a poor car.

Why Halifax Drivers Are Seeing More Broken Springs: halifax-pothole-spring-repair

Pothole season is definitely upon us. Calderdale Council do their best, but the sheer number of freeze-thaw cycles we get up here plays havoc with the tarmac. Water gets into small cracks, freezes, and expands, and before long there’s a hole big enough to damage even the toughest suspension.

At Pellon Tyres we’re seeing:

  • Broken coil springs

  • Damaged shocks

  • Bent steering arms

  • Split tyres from pothole impacts

  • Buckled alloy wheels

If you hear rattling or knocking or feel the steering pulling after hitting a pothole, it’s worth popping in. We’ll happily take a quick look—better safe than sorry, especially in the colder months.

A Little Bit of Honda History in the UK: halifax-pothole-spring-repair

Since we had a Honda on the ramp, it’s worth remembering just how important Honda has been to British motoring.

Honda first made a proper impact in the UK during the 1970s with small, efficient cars that suited our narrow roads and rising fuel prices. By the 1980s, Honda had partnered with Rover, helping bring models like the Rover 200 and 400 to market—both heavily based on Honda designs.

Then came a major milestone:
Honda opened its Swindon factory in 1985, which went on to produce over 3 million cars, including the Civic and CR-V. For years, you’d see thousands of Swindon-built Hondas driving around Calderdale — reliable, quiet, and great for handling the hills of Halifax.

The Honda Jazz, like the one we repaired this week, has always been a favourite with local drivers: economical, perfect for town driving, and surprisingly roomy.

A Local Note — and a Little Holiday Inspiration

Talking to the lady about her spring replacement reminded me how many Halifax folk are fed up with local road conditions and dreaming of a break. If anyone’s planning a spring or summer escape, our holiday home near the Yorkshire coast at Thornwick Bay is already taking bookings for next season.
Take a look at places like the Flamborough Head walks listed on the Lucky Paws website — perfect inspiration for a getaway after a stressful winter of dodging potholes.

Honda Civic Wheel Alignment Saves the Day in Halifax

It’s always good to be back in business after a little technical hiccup! Yesterday, one of our regular customers rolled into Pellon Tyre and Autocentre, here in Halifax, with his Honda Civic. He’d been having a bit of a problem—the tyres on his car were wearing badly on one side.

Now, uneven tyre wear is one of those things that can sneak up on you. At first, you might not even notice it until the car starts pulling slightly to one side, or you hear that tell-tale hum as the tyres scrub unevenly on the road. In this case, the driver had spotted the wear early — which is always a good sign — and came straight to us before it got any worse.

A Thorough Check by the Pellon Team: Honda-Civic-Wheel-Alignment

As always, we start with a full inspection. Ryan, one of our experienced technicians, took the Civic onto the ramp and gave the steering and suspension a proper going-over. It’s important to check these first, as problems with suspension arms, bushes, or ball joints can also cause uneven wear.

After a good look, everything checked out fine — no worn parts, no loose steering components. So, Ryan suggested the next logical step: a four-wheel alignment.

The Importance of Wheel Alignment

Many people don’t realise just how crucial wheel alignment is. It’s not just about keeping your tyres straight—it’s about ensuring that all four wheels are pointing in exactly the right direction, relative to each other and to the car’s frame.

If one wheel is slightly out of line, it can cause the tyre to drag across the road surface instead of rolling smoothly. Over time, that causes one edge of the tyre to wear down much faster than the other. Not only does this shorten the life of the tyre, but it can also affect your car’s handling and fuel efficiency.

When we carried out the Civic’s alignment check on our modern laser alignment system, it didn’t take long to spot the issue. The readings showed that one of the rear wheels was out of spec, causing the uneven wear that the customer had noticed.

All Four Wheels Adjusted: Honda-Civic-Wheel-Alignment

We always recommend checking all four wheels, even if the problem seems to be on one corner. Cars like the Honda Civic, with independent rear suspension, can easily go out of line at the back as well as the front.

After a few careful adjustments and re-checks, everything was set perfectly within the manufacturer’s tolerances. Once the alignment was spot on, the Civic was ready to go back on the road.

The difference in the way a car drives after alignment can be quite something — smoother steering, more precise handling, and no more annoying pull to one side. The customer was well chuffed and left with a smile, knowing his tyres would now wear evenly and last a lot longer.

A Common Problem Around Halifax

We see a lot of this kind of thing here in Halifax. With all our hilly roads and potholes, it’s no surprise that wheel alignment can get knocked out of position so easily. Just one hard bump against a kerb or a deep pothole can throw your geometry out.

If you drive around the back roads towards Ovenden, Mount Tabor, or Boothtown, you’ll know exactly what I mean! The Civic’s owner told us he regularly drives up towards Hebden Bridge for work, and that route is notorious for rough road surfaces. That’s probably where his problem started.

The Importance of Regular Checks: Honda-Civic-Wheel-Alignment

It’s a good idea to get your wheel alignment checked at least once a year — or any time you’ve had new tyres fitted, suspension work done, or a nasty knock against a kerb. At Pellon Tyre and Autocentre, we offer full four-wheel alignment checks using the latest laser equipment, giving you a printout to show exactly what’s been adjusted.

Keeping your alignment right saves you money in the long run — not just in tyres, but in fuel as well. When your wheels are all pulling in the same direction, your car doesn’t have to work as hard, meaning less drag and better miles per gallon.

Keeping Halifax Drivers Safe and Steady

It’s little jobs like this that remind us why we love what we do. Every day’s different here at Pellon Tyres, and whether it’s a Honda Civic, a Ford Transit, or a BMW, we take pride in getting people safely back on the road.

If you’ve noticed your steering wheel sitting slightly off-centre, or if your car pulls to one side, or if your tyres are wearing unevenly, it’s definitely worth popping in for an alignment check.

You can book online through our website at www.pellontyres.co.uk, give us a ring, or just call in at our garage on Pellon Lane, Halifax—we’re always happy to help.

Budget Tyres and Proper Wheel Alignment – Keeping Your VW Golf Rolling Smoothly in Halifax

At Pellon Tyres here in Halifax, we see all sorts of cars come through the doors – from shiny new SUVs to trusty old hatchbacks that have served their owners for years. Recently, we had a neat little VW Golf pop in for our free tyre check, something we offer to all our customers. It’s a quick but important job – tyres take a real battering on Halifax’s hilly roads and pothole-ridden streets, so it’s always worth keeping an eye on them.

This Golf’s tyres were well past their best. The tread was down to the legal limit on the fronts, and there was uneven wear showing on the outer edges – a sure sign that the wheel alignment was out of spec. After chatting with the customer, they decided to go for a pair of Comforser budget tyres – good value, safe, and perfect for everyday driving.

We fitted the new tyres, balanced the wheels (included in the price, of course), and gave the car a proper laser wheel alignment. The difference was night and day – smoother steering, better grip, and no more pulling to one side.

Budget Tyres – Sensible, Safe, and Great Value: VW Golf for Budget Tyres

There’s a bit of a myth floating around that “budget” means “bad”, but that’s far from true. Here at Pellon Tyres, we’ve tested plenty of budget tyre brands, and many offer excellent performance for their price.

Comforser tyres, for example, are one of our best-selling budget options. They’re well-made, reliable, and come in a range of sizes to fit everything from small hatchbacks to large vans. The tread design helps with wet-weather grip – a must in a place like Halifax, where it rains more often than not!

For local drivers who mainly stick to town runs, commuting, or trips up to the supermarket, a good quality budget tyre makes perfect sense. You get solid performance, decent fuel economy, and good braking ability – without breaking the bank.

Of course, if you’re doing high motorway mileage or need specialist performance tyres, then we’ll always recommend something like Michelin, Goodyear, or Bridgestone. But for everyday Halifax motoring, Comforser, GT Radial, and other budget-friendly brands do a cracking job.

Why Wheel Balancing Matters: VW Golf for Budget Tyres

Once those new tyres were on the Golf, we moved on to wheel balancing. It’s one of those behind-the-scenes jobs that makes a big difference to how your car feels.

When a tyre and wheel are fitted, even the smallest weight difference can cause an imbalance. At higher speeds, that imbalance can lead to vibration through the steering wheel, premature tyre wear, and even damage to suspension components if ignored.

At Pellon Tyres, we use high-precision digital balancing machines that detect even the tiniest imbalance. Once the weights are fitted and everything’s balanced perfectly, you’ll notice a smoother, quieter ride. It’s one of those things you might not think about – until you experience how much better your car drives afterwards.

And the best bit? Wheel balancing is included in the price of every tyre we fit.

Wheel Alignment – Vital on Halifax Roads: VW Golf for Budget Tyres

Next came the wheel alignment, or tracking, as many people call it. This is a must-do on cars that have uneven tyre wear or that don’t drive straight. Around Halifax, with its steep hills, potholes, and rough backroads, it’s common for alignment to drift out. A single clip of a kerb on Pellon Lane or Queens Road can be enough to knock things off balance.

We used our computerised laser alignment system to get the Golf’s tracking back to factory settings. Proper alignment means the tyres sit square on the road, steering response improves, and you save money by avoiding premature tyre wear.

It also helps fuel efficiency – if your wheels are slightly out, you’re effectively dragging the tyres, which takes more effort (and more fuel) to keep going. So, a bit of time spent on alignment can save you a fair bit in the long run.

🚗 Vauxhall Corsa Exhaust Replacement at Pellon Tyres, Halifax

Here at Pellon Tyre and Autocentre in Halifax, we recently had a tidy little white Vauxhall Corsa come in with a rather noisy problem. The customer mentioned that the exhaust had started “blowing” quite badly — the sort of deep, rasping sound that you can hear long before the car pulls up!

Sure enough, once we got it up on the ramp, it was clear that the exhaust system had split just behind the catalytic converter. This is a common issue, especially on cars that spend their lives pottering about town or making short trips where condensation builds up inside the exhaust. Over time, that moisture causes corrosion from the inside out, eventually leading to a blow or even a complete break.

🔧 Diagnosing the problem: Vauxhall Corsa Exhaust Replacement

Our exhaust expert Dale quickly checked the system from front to back. The pipework and back box had seen better days, with rust starting to eat through around the joints. It’s one of those jobs that’s easy to miss until the noise suddenly ramps up.

In many cases, if the damage is only to a small section, we can weld in a new flexi pipe or section to save the customer money. But in this case, the corrosion was too widespread, so we advised a complete replacement system.

The customer agreed, and within a couple of hours, the new exhaust was fitted, sealed, and tested. We always check for any small leaks before the car leaves the ramp — it’s part of our standard quality check.

🧰 Why exhaust systems fail: Vauxhall Corsa Exhaust Replacement

Here in Yorkshire, with our damp climate and plenty of salted winter roads, exhaust systems take a real hammering.
Common causes of failure include:

  • Rust and corrosion from salt and moisture

  • Short trips that don’t let the exhaust heat up properly

  • Loose hangers or broken brackets, causing vibration and stress

  • Stone or speed bump damage, especially on older cars with low clearance

Keeping your exhaust in good nick not only keeps your car quiet but also helps your fuel economy and reduces emissions — so it’s worth checking at least once a year, ideally when you book your MOT test.

We see plenty of Vauxhall Corsas through our doors—they’re popular in Halifax for a reason. Cheap to run, easy to park, and reliable little workhorses. But like all cars, they need a bit of TLC to keep them on the road safely and efficiently.

Our team at Pellon Autocentre can help with:

If your car sounds louder than usual, starts to rattle, or has a strange smell inside the cabin, don’t ignore it—these can be early signs of an exhaust leak.

The Story of How Alex Resurrected a Ford Focus at Our Halifax Garage

Eric Roberts Says

Hi there! You’re in for a treat if you enjoy motoring stories or are an enthusiast about cars. Allow me to take you behind the scenes of a recent project that happened in our beautiful Halifax, where the intricacies of car maintenance collide with the rich history of our community.

Since the loss of my dear wife Michelle, I have decided to become more proactive and spend a little more time visiting and blogging about my garage. Just the other day, I turned up with my mobile phone and took some pictures of my staff working on customer cars.

Alex is one of my long-term mechanics, and of course, he is a very experienced mechanic.Today Alex was working on a nice-looking red Ford Focus.

It began with a normal, breezy West Yorkshire morning.

Halifax’s streets were filled with people going about their daily business, and the air was clean. At that point, a Ford Focus drove into our garage. It was bright red and in good condition; indeed, it had the allure that Ford vehicles are known for. The owner, a man from the area, was eager to restore his car’s brakes to their former glory, and Alex is the perfect person to do so.

As some of you may know, Alex is somewhat of an automotive expert. His hands have worked on more customers vehicles than we’ve enjoyed hot dinners, and he has an excellent eye for detail. This Ford Focus required more than just a fast fix—a complete brake refurbishment. We’re talking about new discs and pads—the whole nine!

The procedure was quite careful. Brakes Job on Ford Focus

Alex began by evaluating the state of the old and perished brakes. It’s similar to archaeology; however, he was going through layers of deterioration rather than uncovering artefacts from the past. He discovered that the pads were completely worn out and the discs were far past their best due to years of use. It was obvious that this vehicle had seen some exciting times traversing Halifax’s hilly terrain.

Each of the new discs was spotless and shining. Brakes Job on Ford Focus

Alex fitted them with an accuracy that only came from years of practice. The pads followed, fitting snugly against the discs as though they had always been there. Seeing all the parts come together is a stunning sight, reminiscent of Halifax’s own Piece Hall makeover in that it takes something with history and breathes new life into it.

Now that the new brakes were installed, it was time for the crucial moment. Alex drove the Ford Focus to the end of Pellon Lane for a test drive. I wish you could have seen the smile that says, “It’s a job well done,” when he returned. With our tiny streets and steep inclines in Halifax, the car handled like a dream and stopped on a sixpence—exactly what you need.

Brakes Job on Ford Focus
Brakes Job on Ford Focus
There was more to this project than merely a car repair.

It was about giving someone in our community back a little bit of magic in their daily lives. This type of good workmanship fuels our enthusiasm for what we do at the garage. Every car that leaves our shop, whether it’s a Ford Focus or something else entirely, has a little piece of Halifax in it, which is a testament to the quality and care we stand for.

So keep in mind that Alex and our staff are prepared to work some garage magic on your cherished car the next time you hear a slight squeak or Noisy Car Brakes- from your car. Here in Halifax, we preserve the past by repairing cars one at a time. Be careful when driving!
