Peugeot 406- Brakes- Not checked for Two Years? have you checked yours recently?

Peugeot 406 not serviced for over two years and has a brakes issue.

Car owners sometimes make my “blood boil”. This particular motorist had decided to have his Peugeot 406 serviced and did not realise that the car had not had a service for well over two years, he insisted that the car had a service in 2012 when it was in for the MOT test, but when we looked it up on our computer system, it was in fact 2011 when it was last serviced. He swore us down that it was only last year and there must be a fault on our computer system.

However he left the Peugeot 406 with us and we proceeded with the service and changed all the oils and relevant filters, the oil was thick and black and there was not much of it and the filters were totally clogged up, we think that in another few months the engine would probably have blown up, due to lack of maintenance.Peugeot 406

The car was in for an annual MOT test in 2012 and it passed ,but the car had not been serviced as the customer had thought, however he would have known this because his invoice was only for £39.90,the price of the MOT test. Ryan my head mechanic then removed the wheels to check out the brakes as the car had a “ low efficiency reading”,on the rolling road brake tester.

Peugeot 406 brakes discs were just solid rust.

On inspection the front brakes needed a set of brake pads and the discs cleaning up. The rear discs on the Peugeot 406 were completely rusted solid and in a real mess. The rear Car Brake Pads and Disc Brakes had to be completely replaced because they were in such bad condition. In Ryan’s opinion this work would not have been needed if the Peugeot 406 had been serviced at more regular intervals. Car owners do not understand that their car is a machine made from millions of small parts and they need regular servicing and attention, it is not just a money thing it is all about safety.

I wonder how many people would travel by airplane if they thought that they had not been serviced for ages (not many).

Luckily modern cars are now equipped with electronic assistance’s to warn the driver about any pending problems, they warn you if your pads are getting low, a brake warning light will light up on the dash. Modern braking systems also have electronic assistance’s, known as (EBS) and have other additional braking aids such as Anti-lock brake system (ABS) and electronic stability program (ESP) Traction control system(TCS) and also electronic brake-force distribution (EBD).

These systems are now becoming common features on today’s modern cars and are all designed to aid the driver when braking in different weather and bad situations that may occur. When you have to brake on an icy road or an uneven surface the electronic assistance will apply the correct pressure on the front and rear brakes at the right time to avoid the car from skidding out of control.

In my opinion this is all very good but the car owners should take the basic steps of making sure that their brakes ore in good condition by having the car serviced at a reputable service centre or at least have their Car Brakes serviced. . If you do not know one in your area look online for your nearest Unipart Car Care Centre, Peugeot 406 brakes

Car Hand brake- Car Repair MYTHS ? Hand Brake (Parking Brakes) Customers always want it Checking?

Car Hand brake

Car Hand brake

Things that motorists still ask for when having a car repair.(Car Hand brake)

Consequently, this is an article about some of the things that motorists ask for or ask us to check. Hence, when they leave their car with us for servicing. I have to admit that most of these guys are male. Thus, from the older generation of motorists.Naturally, who remember some of the problems that they used to encounter in the past. Of course, on some of the older model cars that were driven then.

Therefore, one of the most asked questions is “Can you just adjust my Car Hand brake”. This comes from the days when I was a young mechanic. So all you had to do to adjust the hand brake on most regular cars. Was to take out a split pin, and turn a screw thread. Of course, to either lengthen or shorten the hand brake cables. Thus giving you more leverage from the handbrake in the brake shoes.

When the handbrakes finally snapped with rust or age. Then, all you had to do was replace it with a new cable,”simple”. This type of hand brake system was always failing. Especially, when you pulled on the hand brake. So, the cable would snap. This, was responsible for many an accident. With cars parked on hills running away. However, this is the type of Car Hand brake that some motorists think their car is fitted with. Thus, thinking that it is only a ten minute job to adjust (at probably no cost to him ).

Car Hand brake (Parking Brake)

As the modern car progressed. So it was clear that better braking systems had to developed. As a result, cars were getting faster, then they had to stop more efficiently and quickly. This brings us up to date.Consequently, with more and more car manufacturers using discs on all four corners of their cars. Not fitting the drums system at the rear. (Some newer cars still have drums at the rear, but more are favoring four wheel disc systems, for greater braking efficiency). Modern cars also have a separate handbrakes system. Including, their own drums system. Thus, working in conjunction with the rear discs. of course, which are virtually a separate system from the main brakes. Many cars are now fitted with duel cables. So, that are better protected from the outside elements (corrosion) .

Car Hand brake

Worn out discs and pads are another common brake problem besides Car Hand brake problems

Most Car Hand brake on modern cars are much more complicated to service. Of course, now are one and two hour jobs to complete. Some smaller cars have still got rear drums. A Car Hand brake that works by connecting to the Rear Brake Shoes. Requiring freeing off from time to time. Also and lubricating as part of a regular service. But I am afraid that the cables still seize up and have to be come to us for a Car Hand brake Cable Replacement  from time to time especially as the car gets older.

Car Hand brake

Rear Car Hand brake stripped down ready for the hand brake checking

Your Car Hand brake is now a different animal?

In the more up to date modern car with disc brakes all round there is an additional lever and cork screw mechanism that is added to the calipers piston. When the driver pulls the hand brake on in the car, the lever forces the cork screw against the same piston that activates the foot pedal system.

This system also has problems with seizing parts and will take more than ten minutes to free off and lubricate for further use. There are other systems such as used by Volvo, that incorporate a separate drum with its own Ferodo Brake Shoes that is connected to the rear discs, this can also be a long job to service correctly.

To summarise the “can you just adjust my Car Hand brake” days are over, we as a garage need to take more time to repair and adjust the modern car hand brake system and indeed what we do is to offer a separate service just to do the cars braking system justice and to offer a first class brake service.

BMW Mini Brakes-must have regular servicing for your safety

BMW Mini Brakes

BMW Mini Brakes How your Mini brakes work

With millions of the new BMW Minis driving about on today’s roads it is worth thinking about your Brakes. When did you last think about your cars stopping ability.

BMW Mini Brakes

Just think about your brakes, when speeding down the motorway. If you have a soft top Just imagine the sun on your face and the wind in your hair. This is the type of feeling that you get when you are at peace with the world and your Mini Cooper s driving like never before. Feels great, doesn’t it? This time, imagine having to slam on the anchors as a car hurtles towards you on the wrong side of the road, then finding out that your cars do not work. Now that would be a bad thing to happen, but if your BMW Mini Brakes were serviced regularly then you would have no problem stopping your Mini and carrying on with your journey.

Over the years and in particularly recent times the cars braking system has been continually up dated and modified. The modern BMW Mini Brakes system has now become extremely dependable,I can remember when years ago cars were always having problems with faulty brakes, in fact the brakes were one of the parts that failed the most, but with modern cars such as the new Minis, the braking systems have been developed by the manufacturers with some of the development coming from motor-sport.

BMW Mini Brakes

The BMW Mini Brakes system generally consists of disks all round. The front and the rear brakes are usually discs and pads. The brakes are connected by a system of low pressure metal pipes.Hence, from the rear and the front discs and wheels to the “Master cylinder”. For this reason, the system also includes the hand stop mechanism or (parking brakes). Consequently, the anti-lock system that most cars have these days.

When you apply the BMW Mini Brakes pedal. Thus, to stop or slow down you car. The pedal operates a plunger that applies pressure. Thus, to the fluid that is in your brake pipes. Of course, then to the master cylinder. The pressure from the pedal is then spread to the other wheels by the master cylinder. It is important that your master cylinder is topped up to the correct level, because it is impossible to stop your car without brake fluid in the cylinder at the correct level.

When you apply the foot pedal to stop your car, the pressure is spread out throughout all of your brake pipe system, and when the pressure is released then the pressure goes back to normal and the brake pads are released so that you can drive your Mini normally. These are some of the reasons that it is important to have your brakes serviced at a reputable Autocentre and by using Unipart approved parts, your car will be safe to drive in all weather conditions and will stop when you want it to stop, not an extra ten feet further on than you wanted to be.

BMW Mini Brakes

If there are air bubbles in the brake fluid your Mini will not stop efficiently. Air bubbles are caused by a leak in the braking system. When the fluid leaks then the leak allows air to

penetrate your brake system. This can be detected on a brake inspection or on the floor where you park your Mini. You will see a small patch of what looks like oil on the floor where you park your car. If you see this, then please have your brakes checked as soon as possible, it could very serious and perhaps lead to a total loss of your brakes.
In Halifax we offer a complete Unipart brake check on all models of car, and we love Minis.

Brake servicing in Halifax UK-Tips about BRAKES SERVICING for better car safety

Post Updated 20th Dec 2013

Brake servicing in Halifax UK;Regular brakes servicing is very important

Brake servicing in Halifax UK

Brake servicing in Halifax UK

Brakes and tyres are the most important most important parts to look after on your car . We should have our brakes checked at regular intervals, either on the cars routine service schedule or a stand alone brake service.

The most common time we find for brake failure is on the MOT test. We find that when this happens the brakes are in pretty poor condition.Brake servicing in Halifax UK is imperative for our local motorists. Most motorists though ignore my advice, and do not know that they have a problem with their brakes until they hear the grinding of metal to metal as their pads wear out and touch the metal brake discs, making the all too familiar horrible grinding noise. Please remember to have your brakes checked at regular intervals, this saves a big bill later when one problem runs to another, and could become very expensive.

Another problem the motorist has is that there Car Brakes wear out very slowly. I am talking in particular about things like brake hoses and brake cylinder rubbers. Both these items are made of a rubber based material and eventually they will rot away by the brake fluid. This rotting away would be noticed by our mechanics when having a Brake servicing in Halifax UK, on a routine service or MOT test as the leaking of the fluid is easily detectable. This can be very dangerous when the hose goes, as your brake fluid will be lost and with it your inability to stop the car.

As said above, brakes including the “metal pipes” that carry the brake fluid round the brake system are not checked out, there is a possibility that they may leak causing brake failure.

Brake servicing in Halifax UK

BMW mini 2 having its brakes checked out, Brake servicing in Halifax UK alerted the owner of this particular car had to have new discs and pads all the way round, because of lack of servicing.

Luckily for us in the UK we have the MOT test on an annual basis and the test will pick up many faults, but it is a very wise motorist that has their Disc Brakes brakes serviced at regular intervals.

Motorists are wise to have a brakes service carried out after Winter time. Winter is the time that you will use the brakes twice as much as in Summer time, because of motoring in very bad conditions. Another reason to have a brakes service is if you live in a hilly area, obviously you will be using the brakes much more when going down steep hills and taking sharp bends, probably using the brakes twice as much as on regular flat roads such as in Linconshire.

“Unipart2 replacement parts for your brakes servicing

Your brake pads usually need changing when there is about 25% of the pads left on and callipers have a system of measurements to determine how thick they are and whether or not they may need changing. Autodata gives us the correct thickness the pads should be before being replaced.

We here at Pellonautocentre offer a free brake check or can carry out a Brake servicing in Halifax UK for £29.90. If any brake work is required we can offer our customers a courtesy car, or give them a lift and back .We can offer online booking for MOT TESTS

We only use “Unipart” or “main dealer” quality parts with a warranty that covers all the mainland UK.

Car brake Noises-Noisy brakes scare drivers- What could be the many Causes of Noisy brakes ?

Car brake Noises

Car brake Noises and Possible Causes

Most off our customers who have their car serviced at regular intervals. Can sleep at night because they know that brake problems will be at a minimal. So, compared to the car owners who go from year to year. Without a thought to the condition of their cars. Especially the brakes and tyres. Luckily we have a system that picks up these cars at yearly intervals here in the UK called the MOT test.

This is when the faults and worn out car parts are picked up including the brakes. Including, all the other important parts of the car that need to be kept in tip-top condition for the sake of road safety.

Even so cars brakes do go faulty even in between servicing. Car brake Noises and  problems can occur at any time. Winter time is one time that brake problems can happen. The main cause in my opinion is the salt that we spread on our roads to melt the snow and ice can also cause damage to brake pipes cause and the brake calipers to seize up.

Car brake Noises

New BMW brake discs fitted

When brake calipers are seized up, this means that the pads are constantly put under pressure onto the discs and usually wear very quickly at one side. When cars brakes are regularly serviced we apply special grease onto the calipers to help them stay free from road debris and salt and keep them from setting solid and wearing out the brake pads and making loud Car brake Noises .

Car Brake squeaking noises

This is a similar thing that happens to older cars that are fitted with brake shoes at the rear. The parts that expand and contract the shoes seize up with shoes constantly sticking on causing rapid wear to occur. Another result of not having your car serviced and brakes checked is the build-up of dust and debris in the brake disc area, this is another possible cause of  Car brake Noises.

We have all seen the horrible black dust the builds up inside your wheels. So, making your alloy wheels look a mess. Of course, these would have been cleaned in a service. Spraying the alloy wheels with a special chemical to keep them in top condition.

This noise can happen whether the brakes are being applied or not. The reason is in my earlier text and is more than often a brake caliper that has stuck on because it has seized up due to not been serviced or after the winter, the latter being the most common cause. The pads or a pad will be stuck against the caliper and due to the heat build-up with friction the brake pads take on a shiny coating on the surface, causing them to give off a high pitch squeaking noise.

This hard coating also causes the brake pads to become less effective, probably reducing their braking power by 30%. If you hear this noise then you should have your brakes looked at as soon as possible, as brake failure could be imminent.

The most common car braking noises is brake grinding disc.

This is the most common problem that we have in our garage in Halifax UK. Customers come running into the reception. Panicking about this dreadful grinding noise. Thus, coming from the front of the car? Many of our customers think that it is the exhaust pipe that has broken. Dragging along in the road. Thus making this horrific grinding sound. This mainly happens when the brakes are applied.

But in bad cases can be a constant noise. The grinding is due to the fact that the lining of the Ferodo Brake Pads  that stop the car have worn out down to the metal part and are grinding against the metal brake discs.

Once again this is due to lack of maintenance. But can also be between services. On rare occasions we have known a small pebble or stone being trapped in the disc. So, making a similar noise. Generally though it is the metal on metal sound. Caused by worn out brake pads. Usually at the front of the car.

In a perfect World the pads would have been spotted as being on the low side and changed on a service, without causing any further damage to the other brake parts, but after the metal on metal it is usually the discs and pads that are damaged and need changing, perhaps trebling  the cost of repairs.

Brake warning lights now help us more

Some areas of the country can see much more in the way of brake repair work than others. The main reason for this is the terrain. Here in Halifax we are surrounded by the Pennine hills, a small mountain range called “the backbone of England”. Because of this we all use our brakes more often. Therefore the brakes will wear out quicker. We can get more of our fair share of drivers with Car brake Noises. People who live in say Lincolnshire will use their brakes less. Because the terrain is very flat and the brakes are not needed as much.

One of the good things about modern cars. Of course, is the use of computers and warning lights to pre-warn us of any pending problem. The Car Brakes warning light is one of them. Car brake pads are fitted with a sensor wire. Alerting a solenoid when the brake pads reach a certain thickness. So a warning light will come on in your cab when the pads are getting low. A great idea that I think has possibly saved lives.

This also gives the car owner plenty of time to book their car in to the local garage. Subsequently, to have the brakes fixed before they start to make the dreaded grinding noises.

Car brake Noises to finalise

To finalise it is always a good policy to give your car a regular service. According to the owner’s manual. If you cannot do this for some reason or another. Then have your brakes checked. Of course, before you embark on that important journey.  Or before you hear that dreaded Car brake Noise. Perhaps your holidays so that you know that your brakes are in good condition for your own and other driver’s safety sake.
