Fast forward to today, and things are very different.

Modern tyre manufacturers are constantly searching for new ways to improve performance while reducing their impact on the environment. At first glance, it sounds almost unbelievable.

This article is a follow-up to one that I did a few years ago. Owners of 4×4 vehicles who are unsure of which tyres to fit to their vehicles are one of the issues we face at Pellon Tyres.

Off-road tyres are designed for use on rough, uneven terrain, such as trails, muddy roads, and other surfaces that are not paved. They typically have a more aggressive tread pattern and are made from a more durable compound than tyres designed for use on paved roads.

Hilly areas are the best place to spot 4×4 Tyres by General vehicles.

Here in Halifax, United Kingdom, we are in a very hilly area made up of the surrounding Pennine hills. As a result, 4×4 tyres are among our best sellers. Consequently, we do sell many different brands of 4×4 tyres.

The treads on off-road tyres are designed to provide traction on a variety of surfaces, including dirt, mud, gravel, and rocks. They also have sidewalls that are stiffer to give more support and stability when driving on rough terrain. Off-road tyres are commonly used on vehicles such as trucks, SUVs, and ATVs.

Every tyre a manufacturer makes is designed with specific strengths in mind.

How well it works with these strengths depends on how it was built, what materials were used, and what technologies were used during design and testing. 4×4 tyres by definition, introduce even more variables than these into the mixing pot.

We recommend a 50/50 or 40/60 tread ratio between a standard summer tyre and a rugged off-road tyre for our area. To make it a little easier to select the right one, a good place to start is to think about what you intend to use your 4×4 for. Many people used to say the Land Rover was just a status car, while others, such as farmers, needed Land-rovers for more practical uses, so a different tyre application was needed.

If you intend to use your vehicle off-road, you must first determine how difficult the terrain will be and how much time you will spend on it. Farmers would be doing far more off-road work, necessitating a much heavier tread pattern on the tyres.

In 2024, General tyres will no longer be available for cars and similar vehicles. However, Continental Tyres, the owners of General, are keeping the 4×4 tyre section in production and will still be available to British car and 4×4 owners, particularly.

So we here at Pellon Tyres in Halifax, UK, are now switching to another very good brand made in Japan. In fact, we are pleased to announce that we are now Falken tyre dealers for the Calder Valley area of West Yorkshire.

General Tyres are very well known for their excellent 4×4 tyre range.

However, not many people know that they manufacture a full range of summer and winter tyres for regular cars. All the general tyres are made by their owners, Continental Tyres. The tyres are manufactured by Continental, along with their world-winning tyres.

The General tyres use the same casing as the ones used to make Continental tyres. They are the exact same quality and will give the driver the same excellent performance that we expect from their Continental parents.

Suzuki Swift Tyres and Halifax’s Early Winter Rush – A Busy Start to the Week at Pellon Tyres

Monday 17th November turned out just as we expected here at Pellon Tyre & Autocentre — absolutely heaving from the moment we opened the shutters. As soon as the weekend’s weather forecast mentioned the chance of snowfall later in the week, the phones started ringing and the forecourt soon filled up with drivers wanting checks, winter tyres, and quick advice before the cold snap settles in.

To be fair, anyone who lives around Halifax, especially up the hills towards Mount Tabor, Wainstalls, Mixenden, or Queensbury, knows exactly why people take these warnings seriously. We’re perched right on the edge of the Pennines, and that means winter arrives here earlier than it does for much of the country. You can have bright sunshine down in Brighouse or Elland, while we’re brushing snow off the forecourt up here at Pellon Lane. It’s the price we pay for living in such a cracking bit of Yorkshire — stunning scenery, but hills that love to surprise us!

A Suzuki Swift in for a Free Tyre Check

One of the first visitors of the day was a lovely lady who called in with her Suzuki Swift tyre check. With the cold weather looming, she wanted peace of mind, and that’s exactly what our free checks are for. The work was carried out by Ben, our latest recruit and a cracking lad.
