Kia Optima Crankshaft Woes – A Juddering Arrival at Pellon Tyres

Well, here’s another little tale from the workshop floor, that might ring a bell for a few of our readers, especially if you’re driving one of the more modern Kia models. This week, we had a Kia Optima in the garage with, a rather nasty engine judder. The customer, a chap from nearby Mixenden, had started to notice the shaking getting worse over a few days, and it didn’t take long before he decided it needed looking at sharpish.

When he rolled into Pellon Tyre and Autocentre, it was clear, something was badly wrong under the bonnet. The whole engine bay was visibly vibrating like a washing machine on its final spin. You could hear it before he even parked up—that sort of deep mechanical rattle that gets a technician’s ears twitching. We’ve seen it before… and we had our suspicions straight away.

Straight to the Point – Kia Optima Crankshaft-Pulley

Once we got the car into the bay, it didn’t take long for Dale, to spot the culprit. The crankshaft pulley, also known as the harmonic balancer, had failed. These things are often overlooked, but they play a vital role in keeping engine vibrations in check and powering accessories like the alternator and power steering via the auxiliary belt.

In this case, the rubberbonding inside the pulley had started to break down. The outer ring was wobbling badly, throwing the belt off balance and causing that juddering sensation. Left much longer, and it could’ve snapped the belt entirely—and then you’d be looking at a dead alternator, failed power steering, and potentially more serious engine damage.

We keep a good range of tools and parts in stock, and luckily, we had access to a quality aftermarket crankshaft pulley for this particular Kia. With the help of the air tools and a bit of elbow grease from our lad Alex, we soon had the old one off and the new pulley fitted up.

Once it was back on and the belt re-tensioned, the transformation was instant. The engine ran silky smooth again—no judder, no noise, no fuss. The customer was well chuffed and even popped into the local corner shop to get us a packet of chocolate Hobnobs as a thank-you (which didn’t last long in our brew room, let me tell you).

Kia are opting for the Hybrid cars that work from a battery and a petrol engine. When circumstances necessitate it, switch from one technology to another. In my opinion, other car makers will follow this, which will reduce car emissions by at least half. So, as I have said, I believe other obstacles will happen. Importantly, I just can’t see the giant oil companies giving in and reducing their oil sales to next to nothing. Either they will raise oil prices so that we cannot afford to buy fuel, or we will leave the UK entirely.

Remember that other countries are not ploughing ahead with this suicide target of stopping the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2030.

The 10-year-old battery is to blame for Kia Sorento’s starting issues, by Eric at Pellon Tyres, Halifax

We were enjoying our first brew of the day on a chilly and soggy Monday morning when a customer arrived on our forecourt with a really sour-sounding engine. The car in question? A **Kia Sorento**, a robust and well-liked SUV, is a common sight on UK roads, particularly in hilly areas like our charming town of **Halifax**.

The gentleman clarified that the automobile had been sluggish to start for a few weeks, particularly on chilly mornings, and that it had almost refused to start today. He prudently brought it in so we could properly examine it.

Initial Steps: Battery Test

We started working on our standard testing procedure. Dale, our battery and diagnostics specialist, promptly determined the cause: the battery was nearing its end of life. It should come as no surprise that we found the date code to be **10 years old!**

An automobile battery boasts an impressive lifespan** of 10 years. These days, the average automobile battery lasts **4 to 7 years**, depending on conditions, usage, and, of course, the good old British weather.

Let’s be honest: Halifax experiences a good number of rainy mornings, cold starts, and brief trips up and down steep roads. Car batteries suffer as a result of all of this.

A Brief Overview of the Kia Sorento

For those who do not know, the **Kia Sorento** is a mid-size SUV that was introduced to the UK market in 2003. Although it was first designed with families and drivers who desired a little more room and comfort in mind, it has also established a good reputation for dependability and stability.

Some Land Rover drivers were startled by the early Sorentos’ off-road capabilities because they were built on a genuine ladder-frame chassis. Aside from the worn-out battery, our customer’s Sorento was a second-generation model, most likely a **2014 reg**, and it was still in good condition and had been well-maintained.

The Reasons Car Batteries Die, Particularly Up Here

Living in **West Yorkshire** doesn’t help either. Car batteries don’t just quit working for no reason; there are generally a few contributing variables. Here are some typical explanations for why we wind up altering so many:

Cold Weather – Cold temperatures cause batteries to lose their power. Every time there is a frost, we observe an increase in battery-related problems.

With the Sorento now starting every time, we quickly had the customer back on the road. Good times!
