Yokohama Racing Tyres-GOOD DAY OUT AT SNETTERTON 300 CIRCUIT.

Yokohama Racing Tyres AT SNETTERTON 300 CIRCUIT.

To be truthful I am not a mad follower of motor racing ! Probably something to do with the fact that in the whole of West Yorkshire we do not have a race circuit. The nearest one is Croft in North Yorkshire and I have visited this track a few times in the recent past.

Of course, in North Yorkshire and I have visited this track a few times in the recent past. So to see various motor racing events. The last one was a British BMW championship meeting through Kumho tyres.

It came to me with great pleasure ! So when I was invited to a race meeting in Snetterton, Norfolk, UK. The race meeting was a good four hour drive from my beloved Yorkshire. But never the less I decided to do the round trip in the day and set off at 5.30 in the morning. The day was going to be red hot ! You could just tell and I was looking forward to watching the cars perform. Especially, on the Yokohama Racing Tyres, that we sell in Halifax to our customers.

I arrived early because the roads were quiet due to the fact that it was Sunday morning

I met the Yokohama Racing Tyres UK guy Paul Cox. Paul was to be my guide ! Shyly, as I have said I know little about the motorsport circuit. Although I love the atmosphere that these events can generate. I took my camera to take some shots of the cars. Especially with the Yokohama racing tyres fitted. This is always the sign of a good tyre company, the research and development that these companies gain is invaluable when it comes to developing tyres for the regular cars that we use in every day usage.

Paul turned out to be a very knowledgeable guide having competed in motorsport racing himself for a good many years and now helping to coach his son to become a race car driver at the age of seventeen. The racing today was to be the British F3 and GT championships and when I arrived it was a lovely sunny day and the crowds were already building up.

British F3 has always been one of the proving grounds for future F1 drivers including the 2009 World champion Jenson Button. Some of the drivers competing on that day are expected to become future F1 stars and included Kevin Magnussen and Daniel Riciardo, so watch out for those names.

The weekends racing also included the BRDC Formula 4 Championships

Including up and coming stars on show, I could not Waite.  These cars run on 2 litre Ford Duratec engines and develop 175 Brake horse power BHP. They are supplied with a Cosworth engine management system and are operated with a 6 speed Sadev transmission system that works from a paddle shift. Yokohama Racing Tyres are the suppliers of the wet and slick compound tyres, the main purpose of my visit.

Paul was really enthusiastic about showing me round. So,I was very impressed with the politeness of the drivers. Including the guys in the pits ! Allowing me to take pictures at will. He also knew many of the drivers.Introducing me to a couple of them in between their busy schedules. One of the drivers was Jon Minshaw the owner of the famous Demon Tweeks motor parts stores. Consequently, taking time out between changing driver’s mid-way through a race.

Yokohama tyres fitting area was most impressive.

Paul also introduced me to the YOKOHAMA TYRES UK tyre fitting team fully equipped with fitting machines and wheel balance’s all ready for the action, in fact when we were there they had already fitted in excess of  a hundred slick tyres due to the hot sunny weather the slick tyres give a better grip, than tyres with a tread on them.

One of the other drivers that I saw was Sir Chris How who has only recently changed from cycling to the British GT Championships and is said to be a “natural” at motorsport, making 2014 his debut year in the Nissan Academy Team known as RJN. Also in his year of racing was Rick Parfett Jnr, son of his famous namesake from the band, Status Quo, who incidentally I saw live at Leeds First direct Arena, last December, with my wife Michelle. Rick the elder often watches his son race but was not there on this day.

After watching a great days racing and talked to many of the pit guys I thanked Paul for a great day out and headed for my long drive back to Yorkshire, looking forward to my next race meeting later this year.

Of course that we now all know about the  growing awareness of the nutritional benefits of consuming foods made from soybeans. So, what are they? Soy beans, aka soya beans, are a species of legume and are often classified as an oil-seed. Naturally, soya beans are known to have been in existence in China some 5000 years ago. Having been consumed and including use, in medical preparations. Hence, for at least the last 2000 years.

It was many centuries later before soya beans are grown commercially in the western world. It took until 1906 in the USA and 1910 in Europe before there was deemed to be a sufficiently large enough market to encourage farmers to grow soya beans in significant enough quantities.

Now soya beans are used in millions of food products.

Of course Goodyear tyres like many other tyre manufacturers. have been looking for alternatives using rubber latex in their tyre products.

Soya beans have have become one of these natural ingredients that match the molecular structure of latex used in the production of rubber in tyres.

Other tyre companies that have come up with similar natural products are Continental tyres. So, Continental tyres are experimenting by using the sap of the humble “dandelion” plants. Of course, this sap is also of the same molecular structure as latex rubber.

Yokohama tyres are now using the oil extracted from orange peel skins. All these methods will give tyres a greener more sustainable tyre product in the years ahead.

PELLON TYRES Sponsor Shirts Shirts for local Football Team

Part of PELLON TYRES Sponsor Shirts giving back to the community

2014 will be the 25 Year Anniversary of Eric and Michelle Roberts trading in Halifax here in West Yorkshire in the UK.

PELLON TYRES Sponsor Shirts

Debbie Bastow, my wife Michelle’s sister has also been with us for all of the 25 years as part time and a full time employee. Debbie started along with Eric when the tyre depot only had two bays to trade from. Over the years the business has grown from the two bays to the present seven bays that we have today.

As part of our celebration PELLON TYRES Sponsor Shirts  decided to give something back to the community and one of the things is to buy a football kit for local soccer team Ovenden West Riding, with our 25 years logo on the shirts (and very nice they look too).

Like many other tyre centres,  Pellon tyres moved into other areas of the auto trade and started to do other things, such as car servicing and repairs, MOT testing was added later and now they believe they are a complete Autocentre. Most of the changes were brought about by Eric Roberts to combat the effects of the different recessions that have hit small businesses over the past 25 years, and also to become a complete one stop service centre.

Over the years we have seen staff coming and going like most businesses, but we are now settled with our present staff, some who have worked for the company for over 20 years, the longest serving member being Ryan Linton. Ryan is at present in charge of the mechanical department, which includes the MOT testing side of the business. Other long serving members of staff includes Aaron Roberts( Aaron has now left us to become a bread baker). Adam Dale our driver and tyre fitter, Dale Linton ( now an MOT tester), Alex Bray, who is now in charge of the tyre bay and new recruit  Jake Kennedy. Other long term employees are Dave Smith and Tony Tetley, who run our Cheap Batteries Online  department, www.batteriesontheweb.co.uk  .

One of the biggest challenges to hit the retail tyre industry has been the rise of the internet. Fortunately Eric Roberts was quick to react to the challenges and started the website www.pellonautocentre.com  this was to compete with the national tyre companies selling cheap tyres online, but at a local level, “being a small company we could not compete at a national level but we could fight a battle at a local level”, said Eric Roberts. Pellon tyres were helped by a national wholesaler, Micheldever tyres, to set up a tyre pricing system so that the local public could log onto the website and buy their tyres at the same price as the national companies, thus competing at a local level. This has proved to be very successful and enabled the tyre side of the  business to maintain their tyre sales levels with the aid of the local community.

Pellon tyres join Unipart Car Care Centre

Another great move was to join national garage group Unipart Car Care Centre. This enables a local company to have a national image, whilst still been owned and run as a family business. Unipart also supply Pellon tyres  with excellent service and quality parts, with a national warranty  system that covers our customers, for faulty parts should they break down anywhere in the UK, a great insurance to help our customers.

On a similar theme Pellon Autocentre joined another great national tyre dealer network called POINT-S Tyres. This has enabled Pellon tyres to buy tyres direct from the manufactures, who previously were not interested in supplying a small company tucked away in Halifax, but because we are now a member of a large network, we can buy tyres direct and this has helped us once again to became more competitive.
