Make sure that your family are safe with a Car Battery Check

So, on a recent visit to France, we unfortunately broke down. Due to an electrical fault on our Peugeot van. Just by a coincidence another English vehicle in a few parking spaces near to us. Was also broke down, this vehicle was a Citroen C4 Picasso people carrier, and was occupied by a family of six , four children and their parents.

I went over to the guy, who was looking under the bonnet (hood) of his car. Tentatively,  asking him what had gone wrong. He told that the orange alternator light had come on. Sadly, but he carried on. Not suspecting that the light would cause a problem. He went on to tell me!

That he had suspected that the car may have had a dodgy battery for a few weeks

. But he just kept on charging it up. Because he did not use the people carrier very often. In fact he only used the car for family outings and visits to the sea side.

I told him that I was in the Car battery business. So, and suspected that a Battery Check would do the trick. I am amazed at the number of drivers that I come across. Consequently, who are hell bent on trying to keep a dead battery alive. Of course, by constantly trying to charge up their old, and probably dead battery up. So, trying to keep the thing alive. Most drivers fail and eventually give up their dead battery. Of course, and go out to have a professional Battery Check. Before buying  buy a new one.

We were both members of the AA, a British breakdown organisation, that covers the whole of Europe. Sure enough a breakdown truck arrived to attend to the guy with the people carrier. The system in France only allows the AA Recovery to attend a breakdown on the road side or hard shoulder of a motorway.

This is French law! I think it has something to do with protecting the livelihood of the French garage trade. Something that the French are good at,  protectionism. The English guy did have a battery test and needed a new  12 Volt Battery. The battery on the vehicle was a common size. Known to us as a 096. These batteries cost about £60 here in the UK. But the driver got a shock when the new battery cost him 140 Euros.

His breakdown cover may not have covered him for what we call renewable s, so the lesson there is do not mess about trying to resurrect your old car battery,

just go and buy a new one. The whole experience of breaking down would have put a lot of pressure on his family, not knowing if they would not reach their holiday destination or not, just for the sake of a battery test before starting off on a journey.

Car Battery Check

My wife and I have had eight children together over the past 35 years and have traveled extensively all over Europe. We have broken down a couple of times in our people carriers and so we know about the pressure that breaking down can put on the whole family. It is not worth the hassle and stress, just because you did not prepare your car and had a not knowing if they would not reach their holiday destination or not, just for the sake of a Car Battery Check before starting off on a journey.

Since this post my dear wife of 45 years has passed away.Staggeringly, she died after three years of suffering with MND.

EricRoberts‘s insight:

Leisure batteries: powering our passions in the great outdoors

Let’s talk about something that’s becoming as important as a good pair of wellies when we go on an adventure: leisure batteries. In recent years, these handy powerhouses have become unsung heroes for everyone, from the weekend caravaner to the most dedicated off-grid camper. So, why the sudden focus on leisure batteries? Why should you consider one for your next wilderness or leisurely retreat?

What is a leisure battery?
First and foremost, a leisure battery differs from a regular car battery. These are specifically intended to deliver power at a consistent pace over an extended period of time. They’re the marathon runners of the battery world, designed to keep your lights on, your fridge running, and your devices charged even when you’re miles from a power outlet.

The rise of staycations and outdoor pursuits. Leisure Battery Suppliers

The recent spike in their popularity is not a coincidence. With the world as it is, more people are finding (or rediscovering) the benefits of staycations and outdoor activities. Caravans, motorhomes, and boats are more than just a way to explore our beautiful landscapes, from the rolling hills of the Lake District to the craggy beaches of Cornwall; they’re also becoming little homes away from home.

What makes these dwellings comfortable and convenient? You guessed it—leisure batteries. These batteries are essential for charging a GPS to navigate those treacherous waters or keeping the kids entertained with a movie on a rainy day in the Peaks.

Sustainability and Efficiency
Now that we’re all becoming more environmentally conscious, the efficiency of leisure batteries shines through. They’re rechargeable, long-lasting, and extremely durable, resulting in less waste and more enjoyment from a single purchase. Combine them with solar panels to create a sustainable system that Mother Nature would approve of.

The Local Scene
Let’s bring it back to the local scene. The United Kingdom has some of the world’s most stunning and diverse environments, and Brits are more eager than ever to discover them. Leisure batteries allow us to enjoy our trips without worrying about the next charging point. They want to make sure you’re as comfortable as if you were sitting in your living room while admiring the peaceful sights of the Yorkshire Dales.

Local businesses, particularly those in the caravan and camping markets, are benefiting from this trend. It’s an excellent opportunity for local businesses and online vendors (such as those selling high-quality batteries) to engage with the community and support these trips.

Wrapping Up. Leisure Battery Suppliers

So, if you’re planning a trip or considering getting into the world of caravans, motorhomes, or even marine vehicles, consider how a high-quality leisure battery could improve your experience. It’s not just about increasing convenience; it’s about making the most of those precious times away from the hustle and bustle.

When you’re getting ready for a trip or conversing with a friend about their new caravan, keep in mind the value of a dependable leisure battery. It’s more than simply a piece of gear; it’s your passport to a carefree journey in the vast outdoors. Travel safely, and may your battery always be charged!

Caravan Batteries

Caravan Batteries

As I am sat here writing this article. I must admit, that I am envious of all the people who are now buying their caravan batteries. So, in preparation for the new caravan season. The year has been a poor year for car batteries, because of the very mild winter.

I suppose though that we battery dealers should not really complain. As we have had a decent run of very cold winters. Hence, we should have known that we were due to have a mild one. So, and we certainly did. In fact, it is the first year that I can ever remember in my 65 years. Where we did not have any snowfall whatsoever.

We have now written last winter off as a bad year.Especially, for car batteries  sales. Thus, we are already looking forward the leisure and caravan batteries season. Which has already started with a bang, (what you lose on the swings you gain on the roundabout) as the saying goes.

Britain is now largest touring caravan market in Europe. We took over from the then number one country Germany in 2003. Of course, we were still number one in 2006 when the latest figures were released by… http://www.politics.co.uk/ .It is estimated that there are over half a million touring caravans in the UK. Including another 330,000 static caravan holiday homes. I am going to write about the growing number of motor-homes in another article.

Caravan Batteries

Over the years, many caravan owners have asked me the same question? Is there a difference between caravan batteries and car batteries? And the answer is YES. In the early days, car batteries were used to power the minimal electrics that caravans would use. There were no TVs, Fridges and all the other modern day electrics that you can see in today’s modern caravans, just a few light bulbs and an electric pump. The normal car or truck battery would have done the job perfectly.

Now we have seen the development of the new type of leisure batteries. The most popular one that we are now selling is, in fact, a 100 amp battery that is made and developed by the largest battery maker in the World Johnson Controls. They decided that the design of the car battery was fine, but it needed to hold more storage than starter power. This was done by using thicker plates that were able to store more power to supply the caravan with the electricity that it needed for the evenings.

XV24MF caravan batteries are a good buy.

This type of battery is known as the LV26 was then marketed as a leisure battery and would provide the caravan owner with auxiliary power, which as able to be

charged by the car’s electric system on a route, or as now with the use of solar panels, on a sunny day. You can upgrade to an AGM battery system, which will work better with solar panels, because of the better charge and discharge rate, but for the average caravan trip the LV26 will be perfect for the job, these caravan batteries have now been tried and tested over the years and generally do a good job and will give the caravan owner good service for about four or five years.

To aid in prolonging the life of your caravan batteries, I would invest in a 12v smart battery charger, and connect it to your battery over the winter period, when your caravan is not in use, we recommend the chargers that are made by Ring Automotive and are available online. I hope that this article is of use to you and happy caravan trips.

Hi, I would like to introduce myself. I have worked in the Garage and tyre and Cheap Caravan Battery business now for 40 years.

Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries

Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries

Many people think that GEL and Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries are the same

Many people buying new golf batteries or mobility batteries. Therefore, believe that the two types of battery are the same. They are very similar.Hence, they have a deep cycle with a low discharge. Because they do not spill, they are classified as sealed. Therefore, may be mounted in any position. For this reason, are safe to use in a confined area. Naturally, and may be carried safely.

Absorbed Glass Mat batteries. Are filled with a type of fibreglass material. As expected, that is fitted inside the battery and then soaked with the electrolyte between the batteries plates. Therefore, this makes the battery leak proof. In other words, if the battery casing is broken. Accordingly, then no acid will leak out. This type of battery is also the most popular here in

In the UK (in my opinion, this is due to the price difference), these are usually much cheaper batteries, in particular with the golfing fraternity.

Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries

GEL batteries have filled a type of silica gel mixed with the electrolyte making a thick jelly that allows the electrons to flow through the plates. Once again as in the other kind, they do not leak when the casing is broken.

One of the most common reasons. Thus, for people using the Absorbed Glass Mat batteries,. Is it able to give out a high burst of amps if required to do so. Of course, they can also be charged with a standard battery charger.

So, and an alternator if necessary. Also, they have a longer life expectancy. Especially if these batteries are not fully discharged between discharges. In my opinion, this is a mistake that people make; they fully discharge their batteries too often, causing premature failure, I think that people should keep a backup battery as a spare so as to not allow their batteries to become too discharged.

GEL batteries as stated before cost more than Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries

But offer better-working conditions. Especially in hotter climates. Although this does not affect us here in the UK,. The big problem with gel batteries is that they must be charged correctly. Hence, failure will follow. If you have a GEL charger, then stick to a GEL battery.

For this reason, they are designed especially for these types of battery. GEL  should not be charged with an alternator. Unless appropriate adjustments are made,. Another battery is starting to appear in the marketplace. Naturally, there is the Lithium-Ion battery. So, watch out for this one.

To conclude.

We think that the absorbed glass mat. Now has the upper hand and unless you only have your own charger on your golf buggy or mobility scooter you would be better off buying AGM.
