“MICHELIN TYRES” the great Success Story.(Then came Pirelli Tyres)

MICHELIN TYRES

The Michelin X tyre was developed from an idea and then an invention by American named Arthur W Savage. Tyre companies in America were not interested in the idea of radial tyres. Other tyre companies were still developing the bias belted tyre for use on their large “gas guzzling”cars. But when Savage visited Europe he received a warm welcome and his invention was well received.

Pirelli

Early MGBs were fitted with 165×14 Pirelli Cinturato textile radials

and indeed taken up by

Michelin tyres.

The rest of story is in my previous blogs. The next tyre company to try to emulate the great French tyre company was Pirelli tyres of Italy.

Part 3; Catch Up Time first “Pirelli Tyres”

Pirelli tyres were one of the first European tyre companies. Thus, to try catch up with them and in 1951 introduced the now famous Pirelli Cinturato tyre. Michelin Tyres UK  had tried to protect the copy write of the radial tyre.

The Pirelli Cinturato was first made of “Rayon cords”. Thereby, better known as a textile radial. The original tyre came out as the Cinturato CF57 and quickly became a favourite of many top car makers especially in Italy. Companies the like of Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati were all fitted with Pirelli tyres.

Pirelli tyres and sports cars became a great combination. Pirelli still use the cinturato symbol on its tyres. Such as the Pirelli Cinturato P7 Plus and were always looking over their shoulders at Michelin tyres .

MICHELIN TYREs

The two tyre companies became great rivals. Pirelli tried to increase their size by merging with other tyre companies. They tried merging with Dunlop and Continental but increased its capacity by buying Armstrong tyres of America .Pirelli tyres were also fitting original equipment tyres to marques such as Aston Martin and Jaguar giving their product a very high profile image. The first time that i came across the famous Cinturato tyres  were fitted to the MGB cars in the mid sixties.

The main problems were on the early Jaguars, i remember having to take these cars to the Dunlop depot in Leeds where a Dunlop technician would have to skim some rubber off the tread area to make the tyre round enough to balance them on a regular wheel balancer.

Pellon Tyre and Autocentre offer car and van servicing and repairs to all makes of vehicles.

Pirelli tyres are now available from www.pellonautocentre.com/tyres.htm online with free fitting in the Calderdale area of West Yorkshire.

Best 4x4 Tyres

Best 4×4 Tyres

Tyre manufacturers and the automobile companies work hard. This is to develop the correct tyre for your vehicle. Best 4×4 Tyres that are produced for all vehicles including 4X4 and SUV vehicles are thoroughly tested in all conditions. Probably ,before the vehicles are released into the public domain.
Consequently, most of the Best 4×4 Tyres  developed are for mainly on road driving. Some come  with a small amount of off road capability, but the main emphasis is form the vehicle to have stability with good steering and low noise levels when driving on the road. Such vehicles would be perhaps Land Rover Discoveries.
A problem may occur when a more demanding situation requires a more demanding product. Such an occurrence may happen, say for a Farmer or any person working in a rural environment.

A different type of the Best 4×4 Tyres would be required for this situation. The tyre most likely to react to this situation would be an A/T (all-terrain) . Most noteworthy, these types  are  made by several tyre manufacturers, including General, and Kumho .

Furthermore, one of our best selling, if not the best selling on/off road tyres is the Best 4×4 Tyres General AT2. This all-terrain tyre has been designed with an aggressive, self-cleaning tread pattern that will give the driver of these vehicles much off-road traction, durability and impressive tarmac road performance.

Best 4×4 Tyres

  • 5-row tread pattern with multiple traction edges
  • Directional double v-shaped tread pattern
  • Highly-engineered acoustic tread pattern
  • Snowflake approved and this tyre can be studded.
Benefits
  • Innovative tread design promotes uncompromising off road traction
  • Designed to increase tread life
  • Allows the aggressive tread pattern to remain quiet during road and highway driving
  • Select sizes meet the severe snow service requirements of the RMA and RAC

It is also possible to fit different sizes  to your vehicle and indeed different sized wheels  can be fitted in sets. Another thing, this would be no problem for our experts on the help desk. Spring Car Servicing-Treat your car to a Spring Treat with a good service

Spring Car Servicing; Get Your Car Service After the  long Winter

Spring Car Servicing; Eric Roberts of Pellon Tyre and Autocentre gives his humble advice on good Customer Service on your vehicle or van after our the last cold and wet winter. Even a short engine service will be good for your cars life, and life expectancy, changing your old oil will reinvigorate your cars engine, and prolong its life expectancy.
I think this is the time to think about getting your car serviced, even in these times of recession it will pay you to care your vehicle by having Spring Car Servicing.
This winter as been exceptionally wet on your vehicle. Because of all the torrential rains. We have experienced this spring and winter and the rainy days have probably been forgotten now that Spring Car Servicingwe will be feeling when a bit of warm sun(not yet though we are now in May, and it’s still freezing) on our backs and the spring has arrived.

But your car took some heavy wear and tear on those cold, freezing nights. Your battery, your braking system, your clutch and other items such as the thickness of your cars oil. When your engine is running on thick oil, there is a likelihood of the increase in wear and tear on your engine, and it is important to change the oil as soon as the air temperature starts to rise, this will give your engine an uplift and increase its life expectancy.
Also, the effect that inclement weather has on your clutch and tyres, skidding on slippery surfaces causes massive amounts of premature wear on both these parts of your vehicle; an excellent service will pick up all these points.

Spring Car Servicing

Your Spring Car Servicing should be carried out at a proper service centre, ( look for your nearest Unipart service centre). Many motorists know of a good garage centre and will often pass this information on to their friends and family by word of mouth.
If you are phoning around for prices. I would advise going for the middle range price ( and make sure that the price includes parts and labour).

It is also a good idea to ask the garage/auto centre to keep your old parts for you to examine. Although many of the good centres will do this automatically for you. The cost of your Spring Car Servicing are governed by the size of your car engine. The cubic capacity (CC) usually the prices are split into three, small, medium and large engines. The bigger the car, the more extensive the parts. Therefore, the costlier the service and also diesel engines will be slightly more expensive.
I always recommend that motorists should try and use a garage that may be part of a larger trading group. These organisation often offer excellent guarantees and a sounder peace of mind,” and you cannot beat word of mouth recommendation”. I often give the analogy of buying a cheap tyre”. They look good but never last as long as a premium brand of tyre.
Also with many motorists strapped for cash. I would advise that the least thing you do is to change your engine oil. Consequently, have your brakes checked when you can afford to have your Spring Car Servicing.

Not just a service check your battery as well

If your car battery starts letting you down, change it as soon as possible. Most modern cars have onboard computers. Also, modern engines now have alternators that charge at 14.5 volts and will only work correctly using a maintenance free battery. Your replacement battery should be the best that you can afford, but there are many car batteries for sale at reasonable prices. Try and buy a high-quality maintenance free battery with a three-year warranty at an affordable price; Available at most good websites, with next day

Giant Earth-Mover tyres

Giant Earth-Mover tyres

Giant earth-mover tyres like these are fitted with the up most safety and equipment,

Another worker has been killed by an exploding tyre at a Queensland mine, the latest in a string of similar fatalities.

These giant earth-mover tyres have to be fitted with huge machines and with care.

www.pellonautocentre.com/blog

From Car tyres to Earth-mover tyres

So, believe it or not this was to be only my second move from the car tyre industry. Of course, I had worked for the Dunlop retail outlet of National tyres . Then for about six years and was ready for a move. Fundamentally, I did not want to leave the industry that I loved so well. However, do to a disagreement with my manager at the time. So, a chance came my way to move jobs and learn about the giant earth-mover trucks. Importantly, that were appearing all over the country. Including learning about the Giant Earth-mover tyres that were fitted to them.

In Yorkshire, industry was booming. Because, we had a vibrant coal mining industry! Of course, as well as the steel making in Sheffield and the north east. Middlesboro was famous for the big kilns used for smelting metals. So, in industrious Britain there was also a surge to build improve the countries infrastructure. Including, new motorways. Importantly, this included the east to west motorway the M62, crossing over the Pennine hills.

Giant earthmoving machines required !

This required massive earth-moving machines!  Some had tracks fitted, similar to army tanks. But many of them were fitted with the giant tyres. I remember my first few days, and I was very nervous. But also keen to learn. The first job I had was in the reception. So, doing a similar job to the one at my previous employment. I was desperate to learn more about these giant tyres. Naturally, they were the same structure as a car tyre. But on a much larger scale. Incredibly, we also had to fit tyres to the world’s largest earth-mover. At the time located in the “Welsh coal fields“.

Giant Earth-Mover tyres

This is similar equipment that i would use to remove earth-mover tyres out on the job

The big difference was the way that they were fitted to the machine. I asked my new boss if I could be a tyre fitter and learn as much as I could about these earth-mover tyres. The boss gave me the thumbs up, but the first thing I had to do was to pass my heavy goods vehicle test as large trucks are needed for transporting and fitting these tyres.

I was paid to take a week’s lessons followed by the test, I always have thought that I was a good driver and after a week’s lessons I passed the test. My boss and I were both over the moon and it was not too long before I teamed up with another experienced and qualified Earth-Mover tyres fitter.

Safety is a huge aspect of earth-mover tyre fitting

I was very impressed at the methodical way these tyres were fitted, on some machines such as the Caterpillar 631 box scrapers; we removed and fitted the huge tyres on the machine itself. On the huge Terex dumper trucks, we would take a wheel and tyre that we had previously built up and change the wheel using the Hiab lifting equipment that we had fitted to the truck. These were the bee’s knees for maneuvering the giant wheels from and onto the giant trucks.

The time passed quickly and I soon began to be the main fitter in a two man team, going all over the UK to fit these giant earth-mover tyres. The one thing that I was impressed with was the safety aspect of the job. Fitting car tyres was relatively easy and you just have to watch your hands and feet, but the earth-mover tyre fitting was a much more disciplined procedure and no risks were taken. We would have massive blocks of hardwood chocks to prop up the machine in case a problem occurred when the wheel was off.

Nitrogen bottles for inflation !

We used nitrogen bottles to inflate and seal the tyres once they were fitted and these would be fully checked and tested all the time. I never had or saw a single accident, in the five years that were to be the best years of my life, I loved the job, it was man’s work and I was as fit as a fiddle and brown as a berry with working outdoors all the time.

This is what I could not believe when I read the story about the guy who was killed fitting the Giant Earth-Mover tyres. Any accident or death is a tragedy, but it made me recall how cautious we were and safety was a number one priority. I wish the guys family all the best and hope they can accept my condolences.

I must admit that this year in the Kirklees district of West Yorkshire, we seem to be having road works coming out of our ears, indeed the main Bradley to Barnsley road was closed for total resurfacing because of the potholes, for at least two weeks, but they have repaired all the horrible potholes and the road is now a pleasure to drive on.

Citroen C4 Picasso wheel problem

News – What Car?

Seven rear tyres, six wheel alignments, and bills totaling £679 in three years were not what John Leslie and his wife, Isobel, expected from their  C4 Picasso.

eric roberts‘s insight:

 Picasso had (wheel alignment problem)

As a garage owner myself  I think it is fair to say that we do get our fair share of Citroen C4 cars in for various types of repair work, especially for doing repairs after MOT failures.

This particular Citroen C4 was having tyre wear problems, the car had many wheel alignment checks and even had the suspension at the rear of the car reset, but the car continued to go through tyres at an alarming rate.

The Citroen C4 went through different  garages in Scotland and in the end the guy was compensated for some of his problems, but the problem was never cured ?.

Over the years we have all had our customers with problematic cars ,especially cars that wear tyres out, we used to call them Friday made cars, because the men at the factory never finished them off, because they could not wait to get home and the cars were not so good because of short cuts, I am not sure if that happens in to days car factories, but you still get rogue cars that has problems that we can never cure and this Citroen C4 is one of them, the guy would do well to get rid of the car. according to the  Picasso owners club, tyres wearing at the edged area a common problem.

NEW TYRES cost Less than Part Worn tyres

NEW TYRES cost

New tyres cost- works out cheaper

Let me start off. Thus, by saying that this is not the first time this debate has reared its head before. Thus, the problem mostly occurs when we are in a recession. Naturally, motorists have to make cost-cutting measures in their budgets. Which means them looking for cheap tyres in Halifax. This is when the debate begins.

In the last bad economic squeeze. Hence, in the 1990s the EU and the UK Government had the same problem. As we are having now. Businesses selling tyres were tempted to store. As a result, any good looking tyre that they removed. hence, to sell on as part worn tyres. This was to try to keep their companies up and running. They were mainly small type tyre shop type businesses. Who saw this as the only way out.

Also, people saw this as an opportunity. So to make some easy money. As a result, and started going round tyre retailers. Collecting their so-called “old scrap tyres”. They would then pick out the so called part worn tyres.Selling them on to the  careless motorists. In fact, I know one dealer that did so well. That he went to night school to learn German so that he could go live in Germany and set up business sifting through the Germans old tyres to re-sell here in the UK.

All these methods of obtaining second-hand tyres were flawed by the fact that the tyres were never tested. Although most of these tyres would probably have been alright, some were not and it was pot luck whether you got the good ones or the bad ones.

NEW TYRES cost

After much pressure from the tyre industry and consumer groups, a new set of rules and laws were devised to protect the consumer. “IF YOU CLICK THIS LINK YOU WILL SEE WHAT

NEW TYRES cost,

39/365 Tired (Photo credit: Mykl Roventine)

THEY WERE” http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1994/3117/regulation/7/made.

To me, the most important part is the fact that the part worn tyre must say”PART WORN” in capital letter on the tyre and it must be vulcanised not written or cut out in the sidewall. So if you just can not afford a new or remould tyre, please check this out, if it does not say this on , please do not have it fitted. This is the actual wording of part 12.

In order for a mark to meet the requirements of this paragraph, it must consist of the word “PART-WORN” in upper case letters at least 4 millimetres high and must have been permanently and legibly applied to the tyre other than by hot branding or otherwise cutting into the tyre

Unfortunately, we are now in yet another rescission and the same problems are cropping up as in the 90s. The problem is that we now have a new generation of tyre shops spring up all over the country selling part worn tyres. Unfortunately, we appear to back where we were before the 90’s tyre laws came out with people selling tyres that have not been tested and without the part, worn labels vulcanised on. This is more of a problem because our roads and motorways have become much faster and much more congested, and may turn a tyre blow-out into a major motorway incident ?.

NEW TYRES cost; Go for the  cheap new tyres they work out at a less cost than part worn tyres.

TyreSafe is now trying to educate the motorist about the dangers of unchecked part worn tyres. More importantly, they have investigated the “MYTH” that part worn tyres are cheaper than NEW TYRES cost. In fact according to their figures, priced in millimetres of tread new tyres are actually cheaper than part worn tyres. This is an average cost because new tyre prices differ. With motoring costs reaching record levels, a growing number of drivers are choosing part worn tyres in the belief that they offer better value. However, TyreSafe’s investigation into NEW TYRES cost also disproved this myth as it found that the average cost per mm of the useable tread of the part worn tyres was £6.33, whereas the comparable cost when selecting an equivalent new tyre was 16 per cent lower at £5.32. Please use the link bellow for the excellent article.
