Hyundai ix35 Drive Shaft Boot Replacement at Pellon Tyres, Halifax

We recently had a Hyundai ix35 booked in at our garage here at Pellon Tyres in Halifax for a common issue we’re starting to see more often — cracked or split drive shaft boots, also known as CV joint rubber sleeves.

This might sound like a small problem, but if left unchecked, it can turn into a much bigger and more expensive repair. So, we thought we’d explain what’s going on under the car, why it happens, and what ix35 owners in Halifax and West Yorkshire should watch out for.

🚘 What Is a Drive Shaft Boot (CV Joint Rubber Sleeve)? Hyundai Drive Rubbers Replaced

The Hyundai ix35 — like most front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive cars — uses CV joints to transfer power from the gearbox to the wheels. These joints need to stay greased and protected, so they’re covered by rubber boots, which flex as the wheels turn and move up and down with the suspension.

Over time, these rubber sleeves can crack, perish or split — especially in cars over 10 years old. When this happens, the grease escapes and road dirt gets in, which can quickly damage the CV joint itself. That’s when things start getting expensive.

In the case of the ix35 we saw, both front drive shaft boots had split due to wear and tear, and we were able to replace the rubber sleeves before any major damage occurred.

🛠️ Why Do Drive Shaft Boots Fail? Hyundai Drive Rubbers Replaced

There are a few reasons we see this problem, especially on vehicles like the ix35:

  • General age and wear — rubber becomes brittle over time, particularly in older cars

  • Weather and road conditions — salt, grit and wet roads in winter accelerate wear

  • Driving habits — lots of low-speed turning or tight parking can stress the joints

  • High mileage — if the car’s done 80k+ miles, it’s often time to check the CV boots

  • If the boot splits and you don’t spot it in time, the CV joint will wear out, and you’ll be looking at replacing the full drive shaft — which is much pricier than replacing just the boot.

🔎 A Bit of Background on the Hyundai ix35 Hyundai Drive Rubbers Replaced

The Hyundai ix35 was introduced to the UK in 2010 as the successor to the original Tucson model. Built on the same platform as the Kia Sportage, the ix35 was designed to be a compact family SUV, with practical space, a high-up driving position, and the reliability Hyundai became known for.

It was available with a range of engines, including:

  • 1.6 GDI petrol

  • 1.7 CRDi diesel

  • 2.0 CRDi diesel

  • Many models came with on-demand four-wheel drive, meaning extra strain on the drive shafts and suspension components over time.

We’ve seen plenty of these cars at Pellon Tyres in Halifax, especially as they hit 10+ years of age. Overall, they’re a solid bit of kit — but like any vehicle, they need proper servicing and occasional part replacement to keep them running smoothly.

Signs Your Drive Shaft Boots Might Be Damaged

If you own a Hyundai ix35, keep an eye out for these symptoms:

  • Grease splattered inside the wheel arch or on the wheels

  • Clicking noises when turning, especially on full lock

  • Vibrations while accelerating

  • MOT advisory or fail due to cracked or leaking CV boots

  • It’s best to deal with the problem early. We can often replace the rubber boot and repack the joint with fresh grease, saving you money in the long run.
