Cheap Tyres Can Cost More in the Long Run

When customers visit Pellon Tyre and Autocentre in Halifax, one of the most common questions we hear is the following:

“What are your cheapest tyres?”

It’s a fair question. With the cost of living rising, many drivers are naturally looking for ways to save money on car maintenance.

However, after many years in the tyre trade, we often explain that very cheap tyres can sometimes end up costing more in the long run.

The reason is simple. Tyres are one of the most important safety components on any vehicle, and the quality of the tyre can affect everything from grip and braking to durability and fuel economy.

Not All Tyres Are the Same: Cheap Tyres Can Cost More

To many drivers, a tyre is simply a round piece of rubber that keeps the car moving.

But in reality, tyre design and construction are quite complex. Manufacturers invest years developing rubber compounds, tread patterns and internal structures that provide the best balance of safety, durability and comfort.

Established tyre manufacturers such as Falken Tyres have spent decades refining their products through research and real-world testing.

Very cheap tyres, sometimes imported with little quality control, may look similar at first glance but often lack the engineering behind better-known brands.

Braking Distance Can Be Very Different: Cheap Tyres Can Cost More

One of the biggest differences between cheap tyres and well-designed tyres is braking performance.

Independent tyre tests regularly show that lower-quality tyres can take significantly longer to stop, especially in wet conditions.

On damp roads—which we see plenty of in Halifax and West Yorkshire—this difference can be critical.

Even a few extra metres of stopping distance could be the difference between avoiding a hazard and having an accident.

You can read more about tyre safety here:
https://www.tyresafe.org/

Cheap Tyres Often Wear Out Faster: Cheap Tyres Can Cost More

Another factor that many drivers overlook is tyre lifespan.

Some very cheap tyres use softer rubber compounds that wear out more quickly.

This means that although the tyres may cost less to buy initially, they may need replacing much sooner.

In many cases, a slightly better-quality tyre will last significantly longer, meaning the overall cost over time may actually be lower.

At Pellon Tyres, we often advise customers to think about tyres as a long-term investment rather than simply the lowest price option.

Fuel Economy Can Also Be Affected

Tyre design also influences rolling resistance, which affects how much energy your car needs to keep moving.

Poorly designed tyres can increase rolling resistance, which may result in higher fuel consumption.

Modern tyres from reputable manufacturers are designed to reduce this resistance while still maintaining grip and stability.

Over thousands of miles, this can make a noticeable difference to fuel costs.

Balanced Performance Matters: Cheap Tyres Can Cost More

A good tyre should offer a balanced combination of the following:

  • strong grip in wet and dry conditions
  • good mileage and durability
  • comfortable ride quality
  • predictable handling

Brands like Falken have gained a reputation for producing tyres that offer a good balance between performance and value, which is why they have become increasingly popular with drivers looking for reliable tyres without paying premium prices.

Advice from a Local Halifax Garage

At Pellon Tyre and Autocentre, we never pressure customers into buying the most expensive tyres.

Instead, we try to offer honest advice based on experience.

For some drivers, a budget tyre may be perfectly adequate depending on how the vehicle is used.

But we always encourage drivers to consider quality, safety and durability, not just the lowest price.

After all, tyres are the only part of your car that actually touches the road.

Final Thoughts: Cheap Tyres Can Cost More

Buying the cheapest tyre available might seem like a quick way to save money.

However, when factors such as braking performance, tyre lifespan and fuel economy are taken into account, those cheap tyres may not be the bargain they first appear to be.

Choosing a well-designed tyre from a reputable manufacturer can often provide better value and greater safety over time.

If you’re unsure which tyres are right for your vehicle, the team at Pellon Tyre and Autocentre in Halifax is always happy to offer advice.

Because when it comes to tyres, the right choice today can save money—and potentially avoid problems—later on.

Skoda Ven for Delinte D52 Tyres

It’s always a good start to the week when a customer pops in for something as simple as a free tyre check, and last week was no exception here at Pellon Tyres in Halifax. What began as a routine look-over for a Skoda van soon turned into a job well worth doing properly—keeping another local driver safe on the Calderdale roads.

A Reliable Visit from a Skoda Van: Skoda Ven for Delinte D52 Tyres

Now, Skoda vans—whether it’s something like the practical Skoda Praktik or one of the badge-engineered models based on Volkswagen platforms—have built up a strong reputation over the years. Around Halifax and the wider Yorkshire area, they’re a familiar sight, often used by tradespeople, delivery drivers, and small business owners who need something dependable without breaking the bank.

Skoda, as a brand, has come a long way from its earlier days. These days, they’re known for solid engineering, good fuel economy, and sensible running costs—qualities that suit our local customers down to the ground. Whether you’re heading up Pellon Lane, across to Sowerby Bridge, or navigating the hills around Hebden Bridge, you need a vehicle you can rely on.

This particular van came in for a free tyre check—something we always recommend, especially with the state of some of our Yorkshire roads after winter. It didn’t take long to spot the issue: two tyres were worn down beyond what we’d consider safe, particularly with the wet weather we often get around Calderdale.

Choosing the Right Replacement – Delinte D52 Tyres: Skoda Ven for Delinte D52 Tyres

After a quick chat with the customer, they opted for a pair of 225/50ZR17 98W Delinte D52 tyres, which sit nicely in that budget-friendly range without compromising too much on performance.

Now, Delinte might not be as well-known as some of the premium names, but they’ve carved out a decent reputation in recent years. Manufactured with modern compounds and tread designs, Delinte tyres are aimed at drivers who want safe, reliable motoring without paying top-end prices.

The D52 model in particular is designed for everyday use—ideal for vans and cars doing regular mileage around town and on motorways. It offers:

  • Good grip in both wet and dry conditions
  • A comfortable, quiet ride
  • Even wear patterns when properly aligned
  • Excellent value for money

For many of our customers here in Halifax, that balance is exactly what they’re after. Not everyone needs premium tyres, especially if the vehicle is used for work or short daily runs.

The Importance of Wheel Alignment: Skoda Ven for Delinte D52 Tyres

Of course, fitting new tyres is only half the job. We always say there’s no point putting new tyres on if the alignment is out. In this case, we carried out a full wheel alignment before the van left the workshop.

This ensures the tyres wear evenly and the vehicle handles properly. Around Calderdale, with its mix of tight bends, steep inclines, and the odd pothole thrown in for good measure, proper alignment makes a real difference.

It also saves money in the long run. Poor alignment can wear tyres out much faster, meaning you’re back in the garage sooner than you’d like.

A Happy Customer Heads Home: Skoda Ven for Delinte D52 Tyres

With the two new tyres fitted and the alignment sorted, the Skoda van was ready to go back out onto the road—safe, steady, and good for plenty more miles.

It’s jobs like this that remind us why regular tyre checks are so important. What starts as a quick visit can prevent bigger issues down the line. And for drivers around Halifax, Brighouse, and the wider Calder Valley, it’s peace of mind knowing your vehicle is in good shape—especially with our ever-changing Yorkshire weather.

We always say, ‘Pop in when you can.’ A free tyre check doesn’t take long, and it might just save you a lot of trouble later on.

Kia Optima in for New RoadX Tyres at Pellon Tyres Halifax

We had a Kia Optima in at Pellon Tyres here in Halifax recently, booked in for a new set of tyres after the customer started to notice a drop in performance.

Like many drivers, they mentioned that the car just didn’t feel as confident on the road as it used to—especially with the recent spell of wet weather we’ve been having across Yorkshire. That’s usually one of the first signs that tyres are nearing the end of their life.

Kia Optima for new RoadX Tyres

Worn Tyres and Reduced Safety: Kia Optima for new RoadX Tyres

When we carried out our usual checks, it quickly became clear what the issue was. The existing tyres were quite worn, with tread depth getting close to the legal limit in places. On top of that, there was some uneven wear across the front tyres, which can affect both handling and braking.

Tyres are something that wear gradually, so it’s easy not to notice the decline. But once the tread gets low, especially below 3mm, performance in wet conditions starts to drop off quite sharply. Water isn’t cleared as effectively, which increases the risk of aquaplaning and longer stopping distances.

In a place like Halifax, where we see plenty of rain and the odd steep hill, having good tyres really does make a difference to everyday driving safety.

Choosing RoadX Tyres – A Sensible Budget Option

After discussing the options, the customer decided to go for a set of RoadX tyres.

We’ve been fitting more of these lately, and they’ve proven to be a solid choice for drivers who want something reliable without the higher cost of premium brands.

RoadX tyres offer:

  • Good grip in both wet and dry conditions
  • Comfortable and quiet driving
  • Strong value for money

They’re ideal for everyday use, commuting, and general driving around town or on the motorway.

Professional Tyre Fitting at Pellon Tyres: Kia Optima for new RoadX Tyres

Once the tyres were chosen, we got the Kia Optima straight into the workshop.

As with every tyre job we do, the process includes the following:

  • Removing the old tyres safely
  • Inspecting the wheels for any damage
  • Fitting new valves where required
  • Mounting the new RoadX tyres
  • Balancing each wheel to eliminate vibration
  • Setting tyre pressures to the correct levels

Taking the time to do things properly is what ensures a smooth and safe drive once the car leaves us.

Immediate Improvement on the Road

After fitting the new tyres, the improvement was clear. The vehicle felt more stable, steering was sharper, and braking performance was noticeably better.

That’s something we hear quite often—customers don’t always realise how much their old tyres were affecting the car until they drive away on a fresh set.

With the new RoadX tyres fitted, this Kia Optima is now ready for whatever the Yorkshire roads throw at it.

Why Keeping an Eye on Your Tyres Matters: Kia Optima for new RoadX Tyres

This job is a good reminder of how important it is to regularly check your tyres. Even a quick visual inspection can help spot issues early.

Things to look out for include:

  • Low tread depth
  • Uneven wear
  • Cracks or damage to the tyre surface
  • Changes in how the car handles

If you’re unsure, we’re always happy to take a look and give honest advice.

Busy Winter Days, Free Tyre Checks, and a White VW Golf on Mazzini Tyres

Drivers seeking budget-friendly solutions often find that the VW-Golf-for-Mazzini-Tyres meets their needs perfectly.

It’s that time of year again at Pellon Tyres when the kettle barely gets a chance to cool and the ramps are never empty. As soon as the first frosts arrive over the tops and the roads around Halifax get that greasy winter shine, drivers start calling in for free tyre checks.

We’re seeing plenty of bald and damaged tyres at the moment, and the last thing anyone wants is a puncture or a blow-out on the way to Christmas dinner. There’s nothing festive about sitting at the side of the road on Christmas Day waiting for recovery.

One of yesterday’s visitors was a tidy white VW Golf that pulled in for our free tyre check. A quick look from Dale showed what the owner probably already suspected – two tyres were past their best and needed replacing. After a chat in reception, she decided on a pair of quality budget Mezzini tyres, a sensible choice for a car that’s doing everyday runs around Halifax, school runs, work commutes and the odd Christmas shopping trip to the Piece Hall markets. The VW Golf – A Proper UK Favourite, Still Going Strong in Halifax: VW-Golf-for-Mazzini-Tyres

The Volkswagen Golf has been part of British motoring life since the mid-1970s. Launched in 1974, it more or less set the template for the modern family hatchback and has stayed near the top of the sales charts ever since. JCT600+1

Over eight generations, more than 37 million Golfs have been sold worldwide, and it’s still one of Europe’s most popular cars. VW Press From the early Mk1s to the latest Mk8s, they’ve built a reputation for being solid, practical and just that bit nicer to drive than many rivals.

Around Halifax you see them everywhere:

  • Young drivers in older Golfs heading over the tops towards Hebden Bridge.

  • Families in newer Golfs doing the school run and supermarket trips.

  • Commuters using them for daily runs along the A629 and into town.

It’s one of those cars that just works on our steep roads and tight side streets – not too big, not too small, and happy enough tackling a frosty morning up towards Queensbury or a wet run through town to the Piece Hall Christmas Market.

Free Tyre Checks – Just pull in and we’ll have a look. VW-Golf-for-Mazzini-Tyres

This white VW Golf is a good example of how we like to work at Pellon Tyres. The customer didn’t have an appointment – she simply pulled in for a free tyre check. We popped the car on the ramp, checked all four tyres, and then talked through the options.

No pressure, no hard sell – just straightforward advice. Once she chose the Mezzini tyres, we:

  • Fitted and balanced the new tyres

  • Checked the other two for pressure and condition

  • Made sure everything was safe before she drove off

If you’re worried about your tyres as winter sets in, especially before long drives to see family or trips to the Halifax Christmas markets, you’re welcome to do the same. Just call in and we’ll check them while you wait. If they’re fine, we’ll say so. If they’re not, we’ll explain your options and prices clearly before doing any work.

For those considering options, the VW-Golf-for-Mezzeni-Tyres offers an excellent balance of quality and affordability.

Keeping Halifax Moving – Whatever the Weather: VW-Golf-for-Mazzini-Tyres

With the Pennine weather, salty winter roads and steep hills, tyres in Halifax have a tough life. That’s why we always remind customers:

  • Don’t ignore uneven wear or cracking on the sidewalls

  • Watch for the tread dropping close to the legal limit

  • Keep your pressures checked regularly, especially in cold snaps

Suzuki Vitara Gets a Fresh RoadX Tyre at Pellon Tyres, Halifax

It was another busy day at Pellon Tyre and Autocentre in Halifax when a splendid-looking metallic blue Suzuki Vitara pulled onto the forecourt. The owner, a friendly local customer from Elland, called in to have a tyre check done — just to make sure everything was safe and sound before a few family trips planned for the weekend.

Our technician Adam Dale carried out the inspection, as thorough as ever, checking pressures, tread depth, and the overall condition of each tyre. Adam’s one of those lads who doesn’t miss a trick — he’s got a good eye for spotting wear patterns or sidewall damage.

After a careful look, Adam found that three tyres were in great shape, but one was getting close to the legal limit and needed replacing. The customer, wanting good value without breaking the bank, decided to go for a RoadX tyre — a solid, budget-friendly option that we often recommend to customers who do mainly local driving around Halifax and West Yorkshire.

A Quick Tyre Check Can Save a Lot of Trouble: suzuki-vitara-roadx-tyres-halifax

We’re always happy when people call in for a tyre check before there’s a problem. So many drivers only notice their tyres when they’re flat — or worse, when they fail an MOT! Regular checks help spot small issues before they turn into something bigger.

At Pellon, we offer free tyre safety checks, and they’re well worth taking advantage of, especially with the changing seasons. Here in West Yorkshire, the mix of wet weather, steep hills, and uneven road surfaces can be tough on tyres. We’ve got everything from cobbled roads in Halifax town centre to bumpy lanes up around Mixenden and Greetland — all of which give your suspension and tyres a proper workout.

By keeping an eye on tread depth and pressure, you not only stay legal but also improve your fuel economy and braking performance — two things that every driver appreciates, especially with today’s fuel prices.

RoadX Tyres – A Smart Choice for Everyday Driving: suzuki-vitara-roadx-tyres-halifax

The customer chose a RoadX tyre, which is a brand we’re quite happy to recommend when someone wants decent quality at a fair price. They might not have the same prestige as Michelin or Continental, but they’re well made, reliable, and perfect for everyday use.

RoadX is actually owned by one of the world’s largest tyre manufacturers, and their products are designed using modern technology, offering a nice balance of grip, durability, and comfort. For cars like the Suzuki Vitara — used mainly for family runs, local shopping trips, and the odd motorway journey — they’re ideal.

We’ve fitted quite a few of them over the last couple of years for customers across Halifax, Brighouse, and Huddersfield, and the feedback has been spot on. They handle well in both wet and dry conditions and tend to wear evenly when properly maintained.

The Vitara’s owner was pleased to learn that the new RoadX tyre came with a good mileage expectancy and a quiet tread pattern, helping make every drive that bit smoother.

A Bit About the Suzuki Vitara – A True All-Rounder

The Suzuki Vitara has been a familiar sight on British roads since the late 1980s. It started out as a compact 4×4 with a bit of rugged character — perfect for drivers who wanted something smaller than a Land Rover but still capable of tackling country lanes and rough terrain.

Over the years, the Vitara has evolved into a stylish and comfortable compact SUV, ideal for modern family life. These days, it’s just as happy popping into Halifax for a bit of shopping as it is exploring the back roads of the Calder Valley or the hills around Mytholmroyd and Ripponden.

Suzuki’s reputation for reliability has made the Vitara a popular choice across West Yorkshire. It’s a well-built, practical car with a bit of flair — especially in that metallic blue! Drivers love the raised seating position, good visibility, and decent boot space for the school run or a weekend away to the coast.

We’ve looked after plenty of Vitaras over the years at Pellon, from the early 1990s models with their chunky 4WD setups to the modern ones packed with hybrid engines and clever safety tech.

Tyre Care Tips from the Team at Pellon: suzuki-vitara-roadx-tyres-halifax

Adam, who fitted the new RoadX tyre, always gives customers a bit of advice before sending them off. Here are a few of his top tips for keeping your tyres in good nick:

  • Check your tyre pressures every couple of weeks. Underinflated tyres wear out faster and can affect fuel economy.

  • Keep an eye on tread depth. The legal minimum is 1.6 mm, but we recommend replacing them at around 3 mm for the best grip in wet conditions.

  • Watch for uneven wear. This can be a sign of alignment issues — something we can easily check and correct at Pellon.

  • Rotate your tyres every 6,000–8,000 miles to help them wear evenly.

  • And, of course, pop in for a free check any time you’re unsure!

These small steps can make a big difference to how your car handles and how long your tyres last — especially when you’re tackling the hills and bends around Halifax!

Back on the Road – One Happy Customer: suzuki-vitara-roadx-tyres-halifax

Once Adam had the new RoadX tyre fitted and balanced and the pressures checked across all four wheels, the Suzuki Vitara was ready to go. The customer was delighted—they’d come in for a quick check and left with peace of mind, knowing their car was safe and ready for the road ahead.

It’s always nice to see the smile on a customer’s face when a job’s done right — and at Pellon Tyres, that’s what we pride ourselves on. Whether it’s a high-end sports car or a family SUV like this one, every vehicle gets the same care and attention.

Budget Tyres and Proper Wheel Alignment – Keeping Your VW Golf Rolling Smoothly in Halifax

At Pellon Tyres here in Halifax, we see all sorts of cars come through the doors – from shiny new SUVs to trusty old hatchbacks that have served their owners for years. Recently, we had a neat little VW Golf pop in for our free tyre check, something we offer to all our customers. It’s a quick but important job – tyres take a real battering on Halifax’s hilly roads and pothole-ridden streets, so it’s always worth keeping an eye on them.

This Golf’s tyres were well past their best. The tread was down to the legal limit on the fronts, and there was uneven wear showing on the outer edges – a sure sign that the wheel alignment was out of spec. After chatting with the customer, they decided to go for a pair of Comforser budget tyres – good value, safe, and perfect for everyday driving.

We fitted the new tyres, balanced the wheels (included in the price, of course), and gave the car a proper laser wheel alignment. The difference was night and day – smoother steering, better grip, and no more pulling to one side.

Budget Tyres – Sensible, Safe, and Great Value: VW Golf for Budget Tyres

There’s a bit of a myth floating around that “budget” means “bad”, but that’s far from true. Here at Pellon Tyres, we’ve tested plenty of budget tyre brands, and many offer excellent performance for their price.

Comforser tyres, for example, are one of our best-selling budget options. They’re well-made, reliable, and come in a range of sizes to fit everything from small hatchbacks to large vans. The tread design helps with wet-weather grip – a must in a place like Halifax, where it rains more often than not!

For local drivers who mainly stick to town runs, commuting, or trips up to the supermarket, a good quality budget tyre makes perfect sense. You get solid performance, decent fuel economy, and good braking ability – without breaking the bank.

Of course, if you’re doing high motorway mileage or need specialist performance tyres, then we’ll always recommend something like Michelin, Goodyear, or Bridgestone. But for everyday Halifax motoring, Comforser, GT Radial, and other budget-friendly brands do a cracking job.

Why Wheel Balancing Matters: VW Golf for Budget Tyres

Once those new tyres were on the Golf, we moved on to wheel balancing. It’s one of those behind-the-scenes jobs that makes a big difference to how your car feels.

When a tyre and wheel are fitted, even the smallest weight difference can cause an imbalance. At higher speeds, that imbalance can lead to vibration through the steering wheel, premature tyre wear, and even damage to suspension components if ignored.

At Pellon Tyres, we use high-precision digital balancing machines that detect even the tiniest imbalance. Once the weights are fitted and everything’s balanced perfectly, you’ll notice a smoother, quieter ride. It’s one of those things you might not think about – until you experience how much better your car drives afterwards.

And the best bit? Wheel balancing is included in the price of every tyre we fit.

Wheel Alignment – Vital on Halifax Roads: VW Golf for Budget Tyres

Next came the wheel alignment, or tracking, as many people call it. This is a must-do on cars that have uneven tyre wear or that don’t drive straight. Around Halifax, with its steep hills, potholes, and rough backroads, it’s common for alignment to drift out. A single clip of a kerb on Pellon Lane or Queens Road can be enough to knock things off balance.

We used our computerised laser alignment system to get the Golf’s tracking back to factory settings. Proper alignment means the tyres sit square on the road, steering response improves, and you save money by avoiding premature tyre wear.

It also helps fuel efficiency – if your wheels are slightly out, you’re effectively dragging the tyres, which takes more effort (and more fuel) to keep going. So, a bit of time spent on alignment can save you a fair bit in the long run.
