Used car tyres? Are Drivers Really Worried Which TYRES they Fit to Their Cars?

Used car tyres

Which TYRES  should they Fit On Their Cars? Not Used car tyres

Along the line. I have written many articles about the use of Used car tyres. Some have been posted to LinkedIn. Hence,  I have received many different replies. Consequently, from other garage and tyre shop owners across the World. This information gives me some feedback. Also, a bigger picture of what other people in the same industry are feeling. Thus, about an individual subject, including the use of part worn, or Used car tyres. Here in the UK Tyre Industry. Some tyre shops are in fact sympathetic towards the car users.

In other words. They can only buy what they can afford to buy. This is the reason that there are thousands of small. What I call bucket shops.Hence, springing up all over the UK.

Used car tyres

Used car tyres compared to a new tyre

Also opening around the many car washes. That are also opening up on old petrol station sites. Also, on any demolished building site. I have no qualms about this. In fact. Most of my family go to these places for their cars washing; they are cheap and fast and do a good job.

Used car tyres

These car washes are also the places that have started to sell second-hand cars and Used car tyres. Going back to the car wash situation, I have noticed that many of these businesses just let their dirty water go down the nearest drain, without any treatment or filtering. We all know that we have environmental responsibilities when dealing with such things, but I cannot help feeling that these car washes are breaking the law, by just dumping the dirty water plus the chemicals down the drain and I assume into the nearest river causing pollution to the environment. I do not want to dwell on this too much because I think that it is the responsibility of the local authority and assume that these businesses are working legally I have attached an interesting link about this… https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/290144/pmho0307bmdx-e-e.pdf

My main point about the same type of companies selling Used car tyres. You must have noticed that the car wash people can stack up old car tyres on the same premises. Going back a couple of years. Thus, the environment agency cracked down. Therefore, on any legitimate tyre business or garage. That stacked up their old tyres. Visible to the public. Because of this, I and many others went out and bought a container to store the scrap tyres in, so that they could not be seen and were hidden away.

Used car tyres

It was all about being a responsible tyre depot owner and the environment. We still do this today all our scrap tyres are stored away out of site, but what about this car wash centres and partly used tyre shops. They appear to be working under a different law and rules to the rest of us. I see old tyres just piled up for weeks on end on the open show to passers-by, This is another thing that the environment agency seem to have passed by and forgotten about. Any company that disposes of the waste tyre must operate in the “duty of care act”. This is explained in the attached link… https://www.gov.uk/government/policies/reducing-and-managing-waste/supporting-pages/disposing-of-tyres

Used car tyres

This links me to my main point, and that is that I now believe that because some people need a car but cannot afford to buy cheap new tyres, then they have to buy Used car tyres. We all know.that organisations such as the great Tyresafe.org have worked out that Used car tyres are more expensive in the long run, but the fact is that there were 6 million part worn tyres sold last year that did not meet the basic safety standards. This fact comes from some recent research by the Liverpool Victoria Insurance company.

According to TyreSafe UK, a staggering 23 million Used car tyres have been fitted to cars since 2009 and a quarter of those did not come under the legal requirements and that 1.5 million

Used car tyres

Used car tyres pile like this one are illegal

drivers were driving their cars with potentially dangerous tyres, and probably not even knowing of the threat to themselves and other road users.

One of the most worrying things is that most drivers do not even know anything about part worn tyres. Consequently, that part worn tyres come under any regulations or laws. Thus, think that the businesses who sell them these tyres, know what they are doing. But the evidence that I have seen on some of the tyres that have been fitted, clearly show that these people just do not care what they provide to their customer’s cars.

Tyres equipped with bad cuts and the fitted wrong way round

Here at Pellon tyres in Halifax, we get many part worn tyre clients who come to us with problems after they have fitted part worn tyres. We see tyres with sidewall cuts and damaged beads. The common one is for directional tyres that are fitted the wrong way round, with the direction arrows pointing to the rear, the wrong way round. Also, we see the wrong sizes mounted on the same axle and different constructions fitted to the same axle. I am not saying that all tyre shops that fit part worn tyres do this, but I think that many do.

The problem is that the customers believe that the tyre shop should know what they are doing and just leave it up to them. As I have said earlier some motorists are under financial pressures, but they must look out for the dealers who are knowingly selling illegal part worn tyres. A sign should be to look at what the place looks like, if it looks a dump then they will probably selling rubbish. Indeed I have noticed that some reputable tyre dealers have started to sell part worn tyres because they have had to do this to compete. I suspect that if you do have to buy a part worn tyre, then these would be the safer place to buy them?

Tyre Safety Child Care

 Tyre Safety Child Care

Children can clock up around three hours a week in the car with their parents** and around 96 hours per year with grandparents at the wheel***. Friends, childminders and guardians may also be regularly transporting kids of all ages to nursery, school, clubs, parties and other activities.

Worryingly, more than one in four carers may be driving with illegal or poorly maintained tyres*.

The Home Safely on Safe Tyres campaign highlights the importance of tyres in keeping drivers and their young passengers safe while on the roads. It also emphasises to all drivers entrusted with child care that it is their responsibility to check the condition of their car’s tyres.

With the message ‘Child care –

Tyre care’ the posters, leaflets and animation advise how drivers can carry out general tyre maintenance themselves. Alternatively, drivers can ask a tyre professional to ensure their tyres’ air pressure, condition and tread depth are safe and legal.

Stuart Jackson, Chairman of TyreSafe, said: “With child care responsibilities spread among different people, many of whom will be driving their young charges to and fro, it’s important that everyone in that care network regularly makes sure their car’s tyres are safe.

“Car tyres are the only part of the car in contact with the road, which makes their maintenance essential for road safety. Whether you are a parent, grandparent or guardian, checking your tyres once a month is crucial for keeping yourself and your passengers safe on the road. Let’s make sure we get them home safely on safe tyres.

From single depot businesses like my own company. So, to the giant tyre manufacturers such as Falken tyres from Japan. Tyresafe was originally founded in 2006 and in that period road related deaths resulting in tyre related accidents have fallen by 30%, a great achievement from the Tyresafe safety campaigns across the years.

In fact Tyresafe have now been able to attract other types of organisations and not just garages and tyre outlets, but such people as car manufacturers and local councils along with the emergency services have now joined the cause.

The Falken tyres director that is charge of Ireland and the UK recently explained that tyre safety was at the core of all that the Falken tyres company stood for and firmly believes that activities such as the tyre safety study that was recently carried out a t a primary school had made a real positive difference to society and this combined with the tyre safety objectives in the future will be beneficial to both companies, which is exactly my own sentiments and the reason why my own company joined Tyresafe.

Tyresafe Campaign about part worn tyres; are just not worth the money ?

eric roberts‘s insight:

Pellon tyres are a member of Tyresafe and are concerned about part worn tyres

For all tyre safety matters this is the web-site to look at . So inwardly digest what they are saying.

Before buying Part worn tyres you must look at what they have to say?. To prove a point, the Tyresafe Campaign . By buying sample part worn tyre products from all over the country. Thus, working out the real worth of part worn tyres . Hence,  the facts are startling. As a result, you should not be buying these tyres. Unfortunately, not only could they be dangerous . But” pound for pound” they are not worth the money . Consequently, that you will pay out for them .

What constitutes a part worn tyre to be sold legally?

Many local council trading standards officers . Are pursuing part worn tyre outlets . Frequently, prosecuting the ones that are breaking the law. Not least Warwickshire County Council. Part worn tyres must be checked for cuts, bulges, exposed tyre cords . So, should have no foreign bodies embedded in them . Such as nails and screws. For this reason, they should be clearly marked as part worn tyres. Including, with a minimum tread depth of 2 mm all round. Before they can be sold.

Trading standards officers often pretend to be genuine customers and go round buying part worn tyres, to be tested. Janet Faulkner, Head of Warwickshire Trading Standards Service said:

Tyresafe Partworn Campaign

“Whilst all the tyres we purchased passed the tread depth test, only one was stamped as ‘part-worn’ and two failed because of tread separation or slow pressure loss, neither of which would be obvious to a consumer straight away. Our advice is that it’s always safest to buy brand new tyres, but if you are buying part-worn, make sure the tyre has been tested, check the tread depth, look out for lumps and bumps and keep an eye on the tyre pressure”

For this reason, we have had many of our own customers . Who have paid up to half the price of a cheap new tyre . Than for a part worn. Thus, only to find out that the tyre has only lasted them for a couple of weeks. Complete false economy? This The Tyresafe Campaign is most welcome?

Consequently, Pellon tyres are very proud to be members of “Tyresafe. org”. A huge part of the UK Tyre Industry . Therefore, in my opinion they are the number one organisation. Especially, here in the UK. As a result, for the promotion of CAR TYRE SAFETY. Together with, all the safety aspects concerning the Tyre Safety Regulations.Hence, that can possibly be ascertained from tyres and safety on our roads.

A visit to their web-site is a must for all motorists. Undoubtedly, for great advice about everything to do with tyres here in the UK. Even more, all the website content is constantly refreshed. Therefore, to give constant updates about trucks, vans  and car tyres. Furthermore, the latest video about a family of crash test dummies. Called the “McIntyre’s”. Explains about what motorists should do. Thus, to check their tyres at regular intervals. Also, how to check the pressures correctly, this is clear and precise CAR TYRE SAFETY advice to all motorists and is a must to watch.

More reading from Tyresafe …

“Correct pressure, adequate tread depth and tyres which are in a good condition are vital to your CAR TYRE SAFETY on the road. Taking just a few minutes to regularly check these items can ensure you arrive at your destination safely. What’s more, these checks are essential to ensure you stay on the right side of the law and avoid fines of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points for each illegal tyre” http://www.tyresafe.org/tyre-safety/meet-the-mcintyres
