Air Conditioning Problems in Halifax – Keeping Your Car Cool This Summer

At Pellon Tyre and Autocentre, this time of year always brings a steady flow of air conditioning problems. When we get a warm Yorkshire summer, drivers quickly realise just how important a properly working air con system really is.

These days, most modern cars come with air conditioning fitted as standard. Whether you’re driving locally around Halifax or heading further afield on holiday into Europe, having a cool and comfortable cabin makes all the difference.

🚗 Why Air Conditioning Systems Fail

Over the years, I’ve seen many different faults, but one of the most common causes is surprisingly simple:

👉 The system isn’t used enough

Many drivers switch their air conditioning off during the winter months and then expect it to work perfectly when the warm weather arrives. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

In many situations:

  • The system will need a re-gas
  • Seals may dry out
  • Rubber components can deteriorate

Air conditioning systems rely on regular use to keep everything lubricated. When they’re left idle, components such as O-rings and hoses can dry out and fail.

❄️ Cool Air But Not Cold? Air Conditioning Problems

A very common complaint we hear is the following:

👉 “The air is cool, but it’s not cold enough.”

This usually happens when:

  • The fan is on full
  • The air conditioning is running
  • But the cabin just won’t properly cool down

If you’ve ever driven on a warm day and couldn’t get comfortable, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

🔧 What We Check First

When a vehicle comes into our Halifax workshop with air conditioning problems, we follow a step-by-step process.

First, we check:

  • That the cooling fans are operating correctly
  • The condition of the air conditioning condenser (located at the front of the vehicle)

You’d be surprised what we find:

  • Leaves
  • Dirt
  • Insects

All of these can block airflow and reduce performance.

🌬️ Cabin Filter Matters Too: Air Conditioning Problems

We also check the pollen filter (cabin filter).

If this is clogged:

  • Airflow is restricted
  • Cooling performance drops

In many cases, simply replacing a blocked filter can make a noticeable difference.

⚙️ How the System Works (Simple Explanation)

The air conditioning system works by:

  • Removing heat from inside the car
  • Transferring it outside through the condenser
  • Circulating refrigerant under pressure

The condenser acts like a heat exchanger. Air passes over it, removing heat from the refrigerant, which then cools down and cycles back through the system.

When everything is working properly, the result is:
👉 A nice cold cabin, even on the warmest days

🚙 Real Example – VW Golf Air Conditioning Problem

We recently had a Volkswagen Golf 2010 come into the workshop with this exact issue.

The customer reported:

  • Air was cool, but not properly cold

After connecting our air conditioning service machine, we quickly identified a problem.

👉 The system was leaking from the condenser

On inspection, we found that the vehicle had previously suffered a minor front-end bump, which had damaged the condenser.

This is quite common nowadays, as the condenser sits at the front of the vehicle and can easily be affected by:

  • Stone damage
  • Minor collisions

🔧 The Repair: Air Conditioning Problems

In this case, the solution was straightforward:

Once completed, the customer left with the following:
👉 A properly working air conditioning system and a cool, comfortable car again 👍

👍 Keeping Your Air Conditioning in Good Condition

To avoid problems, we always recommend:

  • Use your air conditioning all year round
  • Run it at least once a week (even in winter)
  • Have it checked regularly

This helps keep seals lubricated and prevents costly repairs later on.

Eric Roberts says:

Of course, the air conditioners found in the car work.

similarly to the air conditioners used at present in offices and houses. In simple words, the air conditioning system of a car is the smaller unit of window air conditioning systems found in many homes.

Although they come out with the same end result. So, the mechanism of a car air conditioning system is quite different from that of conventional domestic air conditioning units. The car system, in my opinion, is a little more complicated.  The car system takes the warm air from out of the vehicle’s cab and recycles the air. Hence, through the car’s air-con system. Returning the air to the cab as cold air.

Auto Air Conditioning: Not for DIY motorists

The system is really a heat exchange unit fitted under the car’s bonnet. Therefore, the air-con system can be very complicated to repair by a DIY motorist. So if you have certain problems in the car air conditioning system, then you need to visit your local car service centre. Such as Pellon Tyre and Auto Centre in Halifax, UK.

In order to understand how the car air conditioning system operates,

Then, it is required for you to know some of the various parts of the air-con unit. Although systems slightly differ, So in this system, there are two types of valves. There are expansion and dryer valves, which are required for the correct functioning of the air-con system. The function of expansion valves is to regulate the internal temperature of air and also control the refrigerant flow inside the system.

This also reminds me that air-con systems are serviced by specialised equipment. Subsequently, our operators have to attend a course and be certified to use the specialist machines that we use.

Auto-Air Conditioning-Leaking gas is the main problem

In general, though, if your air-con system is giving you certain problems. So, call a local garage. Of course, most of the problems that we encounter are not simple to rectify. I recommend that drivers have an annual air-con service. Possibly at the same time as your car’s full service. Leakages take out all the gas present inside the air conditioner unit. This is probably the most common problem that we encounter. Of course, with the passage of time, the system becomes useless.

This attached video gives an excellent description of how the auto air conditioning system works in most models of car.

One of the things we’ve noticed here at Pellon Tyres in Halifax is how the type of air-conditioning fluid (or refrigerant) your car uses can make a big difference in cost and compatibility. Older cars often used a refrigerant called R‑134a, which was the standard for many years and is still serviceable — but it comes with a higher global warming potential. FixMyCar+4FORVIA HELLA+4blog.atseuromaster.co.uk+4 More recent cars (especially those from about 2014 onwards) use the newer R‑1234yf refrigerant, which is far more eco-friendly (much lower GWP) but is also more expensive to buy and service. wheelbasegarage.com+2Freonwell+2

The reason for the cost difference? Several factors: the newer fluid is produced in smaller volumes, requires specialist handling and equipment due to different safety and sealing requirements, and it is mandated under newer legislation. Freonwell+1 What this means locally in the Calderdale area is that when someone books an air-con regas, we always check which fluid their car’s system is designed for — using the wrong type isn’t just ineffective, it could lead to leaks, poor cooling or even damage.
