Brake servicing in Halifax UK;Regular brakes servicing is very important

Brake servicing in Halifax UK

Brakes and tyres are the most important most important parts to look after on your car . We should have our brakes checked at regular intervals, either on the cars routine service schedule or a stand alone brake service.

The most common time we find for brake failure is on the MOT test. We find that when this happens the brakes are in pretty poor condition.Brake servicing in Halifax UK is imperative for our local motorists. Most motorists though ignore my advice, and do not know that they have a problem with their brakes until they hear the grinding of metal to metal as their pads wear out and touch the metal brake discs, making the all too familiar horrible grinding noise. Please remember to have your brakes checked at regular intervals, this saves a big bill later when one problem runs to another, and could become very expensive.

Another problem the motorist has is that there Car Brakes wear out very slowly. I am talking in particular about things like brake hoses and brake cylinder rubbers. Both these items are made of a rubber based material and eventually they will rot away by the brake fluid. This rotting away would be noticed by our mechanics when having a Brake servicing in Halifax UK, on a routine service or MOT test as the leaking of the fluid is easily detectable. This can be very dangerous when the hose goes, as your brake fluid will be lost and with it your inability to stop the car.

As said above, brakes including the “metal pipes” that carry the brake fluid round the brake system are not checked out, there is a possibility that they may leak causing brake failure.

BMW mini 2 having its brakes checked out, Brake servicing in Halifax UK alerted the owner of this particular car had to have new discs and pads all the way round, because of lack of servicing.

Luckily for us in the UK we have the MOT test on an annual basis and the test will pick up many faults, but it is a very wise motorist that has their Disc Brakes brakes serviced at regular intervals.

Motorists are wise to have a brakes service carried out after Winter time. Winter is the time that you will use the brakes twice as much as in Summer time, because of motoring in very bad conditions. Another reason to have a brakes service is if you live in a hilly area, obviously you will be using the brakes much more when going down steep hills and taking sharp bends, probably using the brakes twice as much as on regular flat roads such as in Linconshire.

“Unipart2 replacement parts for your brakes servicing

Your brake pads usually need changing when there is about 25% of the pads left on and callipers have a system of measurements to determine how thick they are and whether or not they may need changing. Autodata gives us the correct thickness the pads should be before being replaced.

We here at Pellonautocentre offer a free brake check or can carry out a Brake servicing in Halifax UK for £29.90. If any brake work is required we can offer our customers a courtesy car, or give them a lift and back .We can offer online booking for MOT TESTS

We only use “Unipart” or “main dealer” quality parts with a warranty that covers all the mainland UK.

MOT Testing Number Plates

MOT Testing Number Plates; This blog is part of a series written by Eric Roberts of Pellon Autocentre Halifax UK to advise motorists about the number plate regulations that affect your MOT Test.

This advice comes as part of the Road Vehicle Regulations, (Display of Registration Marks)2001.MOT regulations. Consquently, the new regulations  https://www.gov.uk/browse/driving/number-plate (2001) state that the car must first of all , “have number plates fitted”, this must be that the background colour and words and lettering comply with the regulations. The words and letters should easily readable and in good condition.
The letters and numbers must be correctly spaced. The character font should be of the correct type .The number plate should match the one in your log book, and should comply with British Standard AU 145d.
Your plate should also display the name and postcode of the company that made up the plate for you. Official number plate sizes should be the following-If you have a Euro symbol on the plate the character width should be reduced from 57mm to 50mm. To conform to MOT Rules.

The Euro-symbol must have the letters “GB” under the European flag if a plain number plate is used the vehicle must use a separate “GB” sticker when driving in another European country. Furthermore, private number plates must have the letters and numbers correctly separated apart and not clustered together to make up a name.

MOT Testing Horror

Unfortunately, this type story is only too common. I wrote a similar article about a Renault Megane that came into our MOT station in Halifax UK . Drivers will go to all sorts of lengths to try and get their vehicle through the MOT test. Another day we failed a car on having bad sills. The sills looked in good condition but failed the test when the sills were prodded by the tester finger.  From the outside the sills were freshly painted over with under-seal and looked in good condition. However when our tester noticed a small area of rust at one end of the sills. Some of the under-seal had fallen of. Presumably when the car was driven to the testing station.

The sills are a very important part of any car and are subject to rusting and rot. These particular sills were further investigated by the tester and were found to be stuffed with newspapers. The car failed the test and later returned with new sills fitted. As a foot note to that. The dates on the newspapers were from just two weeks before the test date. In my opinion this was just an attempt to try and fool the tester into passing the MOT test. Of course, it did not work?

MOT Testing Horror-Check out Matters of testing blog

Most testing stations carry out the MOT test to the book. This is the only way that we can keep our roads safe. I like to look at the “matters of testing” blog. As a result they show many of things such as rusty and broken cars presented for an MOT test.

Some motorists may think that the ministry of transport (VOSA) are in a money making  racket. Because you have to take your car to be MOT tested every year to pass a roadworthy test. But they do not see that having those MOT tests, . Actually help prevent accidents and cut down on road deaths by keeping badly maintained vehicles off the road.

By carrying out an MOT test every year on vehicles that have been on the road for three years from their first registration, VOSA has successfully managed to lower the number of unsatisfactory cars on the road, making things safe for the rest of us.

MOT Test Safer Roads

MOT Test makes Safer Roads

So if you have had your car for at least three years then you need to find your nearest MOT test  station and have your car MOT tested. The easiest way is to book online, you can search for MOT Halifax if you need to find your nearest testing station if you live in the Calderdale area of West Yorkshire.

MOT Test Safer Roads-Any testing station?

It is possible to take it to any testing station to have it tested there.Consequently, you can be on your way home soon after you get a test completed. The only thing you need to know. Hence, is that they are a fully accredited testing station. Able to carry out a thorough and legal test. It is also important that they don’t let you get away with small mechanical faults. Of course that would affect  the road worthiness of your vehicle.

After all, this will defeat the whole purpose. Thus, of having the tests carried out in the first place. You want to make sure that your vehicle gets through the test as smooth as possible. As a result, there are many checks that need to be performed. During the MOT Test , your car has to meet the standard. So, for ,these checks. Consequently, you will be ready to go home in no time with a pass. The bodywork on your car needs to be in good condition. Therefore, no rusting or rotten holes. The fuel system, emissions tests and exhaust system. All needs to be good working order without any excessive CO2 than is required.

MOT Test Safer Roads-Your car could fly past the MOT test

Seat belts and seats must not be rotted and be able to keep you secured. Your brakes must still have enough pads left in them before the next brake check, and your tyres need enough tread to make sure you have the minimum legal requirements. . Make sure your lights and indicators are in good working order and your wipers must be in good condition to ensure they clear the windscreen when it is raining and the rubber blades are in good shape. Your steering and suspension need to be within regulation standards to make sure you are able to control the movement of the vehicle no loose worn parts. Your registration, plates and Vehicle identification need to be in good order as well. So look after your car and it should fly through the MOT Test Safer Roads.

MOT Test Fee-How “LOW” can “MOT TEST FEES GET” ?

mot test fee

Popular MOT Test sign seen throughout the UK

We have all seen the cheap “In recent times the price of an MOT Test Fee has dropped to enable garages to attract the cash strapped motorists. All sorts of deals have been advertised, even “FREE”, testing that is allowed under the DVLA MOT Rules” signs outside garages.

As the owner of an MOT test centre in Halifax, I am amazed at the number of garages giving away . The official mot test fee should be £54.85 (no vat), as stated on the www.gov.uk web-site.

This MOT Test Fee is only a recommended charge to be used by garages, based on the time and equipment that it should take to carry out the mot test according to VOSA the Government test agency here in the UK.

The Government totally regulate our testing stations, including visits by inspectors and also make sure that we have the correct equipment and that all our paperwork is in order, we have regular updates for testing procedures such as any mechanical updates or different specifications that may have to changed during a test. Our testers are also checked by the ministry guys, to make sure that they are carrying out the correct testing procedures. We have to provide a suitable reception and viewing room for the customers, and also use VOSA’s own computer system to register the test results and store all the other information about my garage and the cars that are entered into the system.

In other words in my opinion we are controlled by the Government, to ensure that the testing procedure is carried out correctly and within the law. If we stray form the correct procedures we are subject to all sorts of penalties, which would ultimately result in the closure of your MOT station. I am not moaning about all this, to the contrary. I think that the system is a very good system and is the envy of many countries, it is not perfect but then again nothing is in the World of garages.

The average hourly rate that we charge for mechanical work in the independent garage sector is said to be around the £40 per hour mark and in my opinion is a very fair price to charge. The Government maintain that because we here in the UK use the private sector to test cars that the MOT Test Fee is only a recommended fee and garages should charge what they want, the problem is that when they visit, they ask you what you charge in your garage and don’t seam to like it if you charge too small  MOT Test Fee,(that’s the impression that I get). But surly they are the ones that think the pricing should be controlled by the private sector.

mot test prices have dropped “big style”

In recent times the price of an MOT Test Fee has dropped to enable garages to attract the cash strapped motorists. All sorts of deals have been advertised, even “FREE”, testing that is allowed under the DVLA MOT Rules, has been seen up and down the country. This obviously a move to attract the motorist into you garage in hope that you may get some mechanical work from a test failure, nothing wrong with that,”you may say”. The problem is that we have all huge investments in these mot test stations and the price we are getting is far lower than the investment in staff and machinery. I understand that we all have to the good with the bad, but I now feel that it is time that the Government stepped in. They could do two things in my opinion. They could have a minimum priced paid for a test, based on the average hourly rate, say perhaps £40, or make the £54.85 in to a mandatory MOT Test Fee to all motorists, and not just a recommendation.

It will be interesting for some feedback from other garage owners with mot test stations here in the UK.

MOT testing Advice-Bad advice about MOT Testing from “Money Advice Websites”

Post updated  8/3/2014

MOT testing station owners must be sick of hearing this incorrect MOT testing Advice

I wonder how many garage and testing station owners have have tuned into their radios while driving about, only to hear the guy from one of those money web

MOT testing Advice

sites telling the public to go to the local council MOT  station for their car testing. When I hear this it makes me sick, I often wonder why the BBC allows these people to spout out rubbish. The radio show that I hear it most on is Jeremy Vine show on radio 2 at lunchtime, and comes under “money saving tips” MOT testing Advice.

British MOT testing sign as seen outside all testing stations

The guy comes on to say that it is cheaper to take your car to the local council  testing station, because they do not repair cars and it is not in their interest to fail a car. How strange? Are they then saying that we private testing stations only fail cars for our own gains, I wonder what proof they have to substantiate this claim. When I hear this guy saying about MOT testing Advice, these things it makes me very angry, there is no form of defense he just comes out with this rubbish and no figures to back his claims, and what is worse the BBC allow him to say these things.

If the guy gets his facts right and looks at the official figures he would find out that in fact the opposite is the truth and an MOT station in private hands is indeed more likely to pass a car than fail a car and not the other way round as this guy is suggesting. This is bad MOT testing Advice and an insult to me and thousands of other testing station owners.

Mot testing figures say other wise

We are all working under the same rules as set out by VOSA, the government body that controls the MOT testing criteria and all the information is computerized and collated the ministry. If you say that by having an MOT test at a private garage “for example, my own garage” then surely you are accusing me of bending the system (or fiddling) with wrong MOT testing Advice , and unless there is proof of this then it must be some kind of slander against other garages and  centers, or at least we should have some sort of defense against the remarks made by this guy. If you own a center please look at this link and send a complaining comment, you will see that they are promoting council MOT testing stations and making unproven claims about private testing stations failing cars for gain.

Broken Springs- How would you know if your car had a broken spring?

broken spring due to bad weather

Winter is a bad time for motorists to suffer broken springs

This is the time of year that many motorists experience their car having strange banging and rattling noises whilst driving along.

More reading...AA patrols have reported a big increase in the number of broken springs – in the year to February 2011 we saw more than 21,000 breakdowns related to spring failure.

Micra McPherson strut sowing the oil leak (dark part)

We are certain that the motorists are breaking their springs as the hit pot holes and pavements that are covered in ice or snow. It always seams to be this time of year when their suspension takes a pounding from the bad winter weather. We have also noticed that we have had more MOT test failures due the very same problem.

Some car owners do not notice that they have a broken spring until it comes to having their car tested on its annual MOT, but the damage is noticed most in winter. Once again we think it was caused by their car running into the kerb or some other raised object or hole, hidden by snow and ice, its easy done.

Broken spring is due to ice and snow and probably a kerb stone ?

So if you hear your car rattling or banging coming from your car it will probably be a Broken Spring on Car or shock absorber that you broke struggling home in the recent snow fall that we have just had.

The number of broken springs in January 2011 was 25% higher than in January 2010.  Figures from 2012 (the graph below shows, 2010, 2011, and 2012) show no signs of the problem going away… http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/car-servicing-repair/coil-springs-breaking.html

Many cars are presented to us for the MOT test with a broken spring and do not know a thing about it. The main damage is caused when the car goes down a pothole or mounts the kerb for some reason. If the Broken Springs are only broken at the bottom, then the driver very often does not hear any rattling or banging coming from his car, but when the spring breaks say halfway up then the noise will drive him or her mad.
