Centre-Less Wheel Balancing-Can be a pain in the neck for some Peugeot owners?

Centre-Less Wheel Balancing

Centre-Less Wheel Balancing

Here in Halifax we pride ourselves to be able to do all balancing including Centre-Less Wheel Balancing

Just a short article about the recent occurrence of certain alloys, on cars having NO wheel centres. These are known as requiring Centre-Less Wheel Balancing; this is because the wheel has no centre, just a solid piece of alloy.

The wheel will not fit onto a wheel balancing machine without a special adapter on which we bolt the wheel before we balance it and can be very time-consuming? It can be a very long job. Hence, often taking up to an hour to set the whole thing up and then carry out the balancing.  We, therefore, base the charge on an hourly rate, the same as we would for a mechanical job.

The customers that have this type of wheels fitted. Naturally, are not very pleased. Some of them think that we are pulling the wool over their eyes. Of course, that is until we show them the problem. Then, that is usually the end of the matter. But unless someone else can come up with a better solution, then this is the way that we have to do it.

Centre-Less Wheel Balancing

This does not usually prove a problem to the cars owner. But does become a problem when new tyres are fitted. So, and the wheels require balancing. Normal type wheels fit onto balancing machines through a spindle and the wheel is tightened on the balancer by means of the large locking nut , similar to the type of things used on Formula 1 cars to change a wheel.

The problem came when French car makers Peugeot and Citroen brought out new models. Including, a wheel that had No centres. Therefore, making the wheels impossible to balance.

However, this meant that the Dynamic Balancing machine manufacturers such as Hofmann UK had to make special attachments to their balancing machines that were able to balance these unusual centre-less wheels . This meant that the time to balance these Alloy Wheels more than doubled because of time it took to bolt the wheels onto the machine.

Some tyre dealers opted out of the new equipment needed for Centre-Less Wheel Balancing

Cracked Alloy Wheels-Now becoming a big problem? Can You Repair Damaged Alloy Wheels ?

Post Updated 2nd Jan 2014

Cracked Alloy Wheels;Yes you can repair alloy wheels

Cracked Alloy Wheels; Here at Pellon tyres we are witnessing many of our customers who are having problems with Cracked Alloy Wheels. One of the things that I have invested in, in recent times are new tyre fitting machines that make the fitting of tyres to alloy wheels much easier , with less chances of damaging or scratching the wheels. In fact we had a customer in last Saturday for a new tyre fitting in a new Bentley with wheels worth over £600 each. We actually did a puncture for him and a perfect job to boot, (no scratches thank Goodness).

Cracked Alloy Wheels

Cracked Alloy Wheels;very expensive Bentley alloy wheels(not for scratching)

For the past 6 or 7 years, car manufacturers have been replacing their standard steel wheels with larger alloy wheels to help them sell the new cars with “free added extras”. It is easy to see why alloy wheels have become so popular. Not only do they provide a better ride than steel wheels, but also they look much better and allow the manufacturers to make bigger and wider wheels to fit bigger and wider tyres. This trend has enabled manufacturers to give their new cars and SUVs, a better more attractive look. Another plus side is that alloy wheels are much lighter in weight than steel wheels and help in the quest for more fuel efficient greener cars.

Unfortunately, alloy wheels come with a down side,(although they are very strong they break easily with the weight of the heavy cars). While they do look great and run smoothly, they are also made of softer and less durable material than steel wheels. Some alloys also come in two or more parts as well, split wheels can make the problem worse. Alloys can be damaged easily, and replacement wheels can be very expensive, and in some cars you can not find a matching wheel and may have to buy 4 new wheels. Replacing  Cracked Alloy Wheels may be the safest but most expensive option to the problem, but why would you want to replace a wheel that is only slightly damaged, the bottom line is is that Cracked Alloy Wheels can be repaired, and a repair will always be the cheaper option other than a replacement wheel.

Many of our customers think that Cracked Alloy Wheels can simply be bent back into place with a hammer, but it isn’t that simple. Fortunately, we know a team of experts that are skilled at safely repairing a damaged wheel that will remove even unnoticeable cracks or other weak spots. The wheel is mounted on a special device, and heat, pressure and gentle vibrations are applied to the wheel making the alloy go back into place, without cracking. The wheel goes back to its original state once the repaired wheel cools. The wheel is then washed thoroughly, cleaning off all brake dust and dirty particles that may be trapped in the wheels minute cracks and crevices.

Can alloy wheels be welded ?

The simple answer is if the crack is not too big it can be welded by a specialist welder using special alloy welding equipment, it is something that we at Pellon tyres pass on to the experts. We do offer the service to our customers and most of them have the crack welded. We also offer a complete alloy wheels overhaul at a reasonable price, about half the price of buying new wheels and the effect is astounding in fact, they just look like new wheels when they are re-furbished.

A048 YOKOHAMA TYRES-A048 are a winner for Yokohama tyres

Post Updated 23rd Dec 2013

recently developed by Yokohama tyres to beat the tough conditions on such rallies and eventually help produce the winner, a great achievement for A048 YOKOHAMA TYRES.

Yokohama tyres are much involved in the field of motor sport and this is why they are amongst the Worlds leading tyre makers.

One of their latest feats was to supply the tyres to winning car driver Toshi Arai taking part in the Rallyof Scotland, driving his Subaru in the Production Cup category. Although this happened at the end of last year ,I have not yet had time to do a A048 YOKOHAMA TYRES tyres blog.

The weather on this rally was very changeable, with heavy rain and sunny spells for most of the race . This made the going on the gravel stages very slippery and tough and not very consistent. This caused many drivers to spin out of control and there were many crashes and competitors having to drop out. The main tyres used in this event were the gravel tyres the A053, this was recently developed by Yokohama tyres to beat the tough conditions on such rallies and eventually help produce the winner, a great achievement for A048 YOKOHAMA TYRES.

Here at Pellon tyres this week we helped a customer out of a dilemma, he had bought a set of new alloy wheels and Yokohama A048-R new tyres. These A048 YOKOHAMA TYRES are made by Yokohama to suit all motor sport needs. These tyres will give a superior control in both wet and dry driving conditions and are specially important to the amateur track day drivers. Any way this customer called out a mobile tyre fitter to fit his A048 YOKOHAMA TYRES but the fitter could not fit them as they were too difficult to fit.

We were able to fit his Yokohama tyres ?

He then brought his tyres and wheels to us at Pellon tyres for us to have a go. Alex and the other lads had to problems fitting and balancing the wheels they were truly professional. Our customer is going to use the wheels at a track day in Oulton Park, driving his wonderful Honda S 2000 sport car. We hope he has a great days racing and thank him for some pictures of his car for my blog.
