Tyre Pressure Knowledge-What if I don’t know my tyre pressures?

Tyre Pressure Knowledge

This is one of the questions that is asked by some of my customers. Here at Pellon Tyres in Halifax Yorkshire UK. Apart from the internet. Vehicle car manufacturers often place the tyre pressures in three locations of the car.

Here are the three places:

  • Inside the driver’s door on the door frame
  • Inside the petrol-diesel cap
  • In the vehicle manual

If you are in the Halifax area then we will always help you.  Supplying the tyre pressures for your particular car model.

We recommend though that you keep your own tyre pressure gauge. Hence, as part of your cars tool kit. They are only small tool items and can even be kept with your locking wheel nuts under the dash. Gauges are on offer at most car accessories stores. Including from Michelin and on the road safety organizations web sites. Here in the UK we have the AA and the RAC.

Tyre Pressure Knowledge-Some helpful tips

I can also give you drivers a few simple tips that you should remember about tyre pressures and inflating your tyres.

  1. Always keep your valve caps in a safe place when inflating and checking your tyre pressures.  If the caps are cracked or broken. Then replace them with new ones.
  2. Try not to damage the thread on your tyre valves. Some valves are Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) and if damaged are expensive to replace. So do not force the tyre pressure gauge or the air-line. ,So,onto the tyres valve and damage the thread.
  3. Always check the tyre pressures when the tyres are cool. Preferably before you start a journey. Heat builds up in the tyres and they will give the wrong tyre pressure reading.
  4. Check each tyre more than once. Ensuring that you have a good fit between the tyres valve and the pressure gauge.

Any good tyre centre will check your tyre valves for you free of charge. Including us at Pellon Tyres here in Yorkshire UK. This should also be done FREE of charge.

Check-Tyres Pressures even before a short trip

It is very important that your car’s tyres should have just the correct amount of air pressure. This to some people will not seem to be a big deal, but, remember that your tyres are extremely important when it comes to the importance of the cars total performance. Cars are now becoming more powerful and faster, withtyre companiesand car companies working hand in hand to create more environmentally friendly products, including greener tyres that are much lighter and more responsive to changes in the air pressure that you put in your tyres.Pirelli tyres have brought out a new range of green tyres

According to car experts, and car manuals your car’s tyres should have the right amount of pressure because the air inside the tyre is the only thing between you, your car, and the road surface. If you do have under inflated or over inflated tyres, you will be experiencing many rattles and shakes as you drive along on various types of road surfaces. Under inflated tyres also cause your car to swerve when cornering and give a certain feeling of unease when driving along, your car will move from side to side when on a straight road, and over steer on bends, an uncomfortable feeling in general. Tyres that are over inflated will have a very hard ride, and you will feel every single bump and pot hole that you drive over.
Another fact about tyres is that when they are over inflated or under inflated, is that your car will use much more fuel, especially on the larger models of cars such as BMW or Mercedes. When your cars tyre pressures are at the correct reading as stipulated by the car manufacturers, then your car will be completely safe and use the correct amount of fuel, remember what I said about tyres becoming greener?.

When checking your tyres pressures,

Make sure that you do it when your tyres have cooled down. Bear in mind that tyres get more inflated when they are warm and the air inside the tyre expands.

You should first remove the cap from the valve on the wheel that you are checking the tyre pressure on. Put in and fit the tyre gauge hard into the valve and then take a look at the reading. Most motorists know how to inflate there own tyres but if in doubt you can visit your local Unipart Car Care Centre (UCCC)where trained staff will do the job for you free of charge.
