Early Radial Car Tyres-Which were the First Radial Car Tyres in the 1960’s

 Post Updated 26th Dec 2013

Early Radial Car Tyres;  car tyres my  beginnings and the tyre law

My very first job in the auto trade was as an apprentice mechanic in a small Yorkshire garage. I only spent four years there and after having an argument with my

boss we decided to part companies. The best thing to come out of my old job was the fact that I became interested in tyres. Very strange you may think but that’s the truth. I had to repair all the punctured tyres and fit new tyres using a tyre lever, a very difficult thing to do until I got the knack of it.

Most punctures in those days were to tyre inner tubes. Most Early Radial Car Tyres in those days were fitted with tubes and tyres were used right up to the tyre becoming completely bald and beyond. There were no tyre laws in my early days this would come later on in my career.

I was now at home under my mother’s feet looking for, a new job. To my surprise, a vacancy for a tyre fitter appeared in the local paper. My mother rushed me off to the tyre centre within minutes of the advertisement appearing. The then manager a guy called Brian Pitchforth interviewed me and was very impressed that I could take off car wheels and fit and repair tyres by hand using tyre levers.

I received a polite letter saying that I had got the job. My mother was more pleased than me because I would be no longer under her feet and she would have my board money coming in again. I started work the week after and soon got settled into the job. I truly loved my new job and settled into my new role as tyre fitter.

This was to be the begging of my lifetime love for the tyre industry and was to set me up to run my own business in years to come.

The company was called The Tyre House, a local company soon to be bought out by the ever-expanding Dunlop retail outlet called Brigg’ s Tyres. Briggs were a group of tyre companies and were soon to merge with another group called Marsham Tyres, this was later to become National Tyres a wholly owned company of Dunlop Tyres.

In those days, the major tyre manufacturers were hell bent on buying out any tyre distributor to consolidate their share of the tyre market. This was due to the

ever increasing market place as cars were becoming affordable to more and more people as jobs became more plentiful. Therefore more people needed Early Radial Car Tyres,

The first radial tyres came out and I was promoted to office manager

for my enthusiasm and it was beginning to get easier promotions in a large company such as Dunlop. I eventually left National Tyres and moved to Goodyear Wolverhampton and a  Goodyear owned company in Leeds to try my hand with giant earth mover tyres, but will never forget the friends I met some of whom were friends for life and my first job in the tyre industry.

About Eric Roberts

Hi I would like to introduce myself. I have worked in the Garage and tyre industry now for 40 years. I worked for a couple of national tyre companies before starting my first business. I now own a company here in the UK called Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre

, and I am a keen blogger about anything to do with cars and their related products that will help my business.

Clean Garage- It could be a matter of Survival for small Independent garages.

Franchise Dealer garages showed us the way to a Clean Garage

As an independent garage and tyre retailer. There is one thing that I admire about franchise and main dealer garages.Of course, that’s that they have always led the way. In the presentation and cleanliness of their premises. I suppose that you could well argue that selling a new or second-hand car. So,is different to selling tyres, or servicing cars. But you have got to admire their presentation and a Clean Garage in the eyes of the public. Admiring them for that.

Many of you who read this article will be from a franchise environment. Of course, it will be interesting to hear some feedback about where the ideas actually come from. Perhaps a lot of the ideas come from the car manufacturers that the garages sell the cars for. It appears that the bigger the manufacturer the better the decor and cleanliness seems to be.

We independents, especially the “one man band” operations. Thus, have always had to cope on our own and the state of the garages.Subsequently, always depended on the cleanliness and training of the owner or manager. In other words a scruffy owner. Would probably have a dirty old-fashioned garage.

Clean Garage

A nice Clean Garage reception is very important for today’s garage customers

I think in the 70’s here in the UK. We were guilty of bad housekeeping. Even the large chains. So, that were owned by the tyre manufacturer. Including, such as National tyres and Tyreservices. Consequently, were trading in the dark ages. Being no better than the one man band garages.

Once a new branch had opened. They were usually painted and decorated in the company’s logo. But after that it was all downhill. With the depot turning into the normal type dirty garage. Of course, it depended on the manager. Indeed some managers even gave the depot a lick of paint.Financing it from the petty cash. In general these large companies did not have a “repair and renewal budget”.Hence, to keep the Clean Garage up to scratch.

Clean Garage-Then came along the Kwikfit chain of garages.

In my opinion, “love them or hate them” Kwikfit came along and raised the standard. Tom Farmer the founder of the company visited the USA. Noticing the high standards that the American garages had climbed to. When he took over some of the old Firestone retail depots. Of course, to form Kwik Fit Exhausts. He brought the American way of tyre retailing to the UK. Everything was to a high standard and clean. His staff were clean and wore corporate clothing. Just like the main dealer franchise garages.

This to me was a great inspiration and to compete with Kwik Fit Tyres, we made sure that we kept our own garages “spic and span” maintaining cleanliness and the decor to the highest standards that we could afford.  The type of image that Kwikfit put out was replicated by many people who were then working in the tyres and garages businesses across the UK. We could see that once a customer had visited Kwikfit, then they weren’t going to go back to dirty old garages down a back street any more, “the Clean Garage standards were raised”, for good.

Garages today should have no excuses for looking shabby. We all have busy days or lousy wet weather when our floors look a mess, but that’s acceptable as long as we have a good old-fashioned “sweep up” at the end of the day. The other month, I had to call into a garage on my travels because I got caught short and needed the toilet, (my age), it was in Lancashire on my way to a Point-S meeting.

Clean Garage

The garage guys were very kind and let me use the toilet. My God? I wished I had not bothered the toilets were disgusting, they were filthy, the sink was cracked and the hot water did not work,”wow”, I thanked them and went on my way. We should all have well decorated clean toilets for our customers to use if nature calls. Our customers deserve high standards, they deserve a nice reception area to sit in, while they wait for their car to be repaired, they deserve a well decorated clean and tidy garage with nice clean well-dressed staff to repair their cars.

They deserve staff that wear protective gloves and use car mats and wing covers to keep their well-loved cars clean while they are in for repair or a service. If they do not get all this then you will be a looser, especially that now we have many female customers calling in to our garages and tyre centres.

Don’t forget that the franchise garages are now offering cheap tyres sold to them by the wholesalers, and cut price servicing, so we must pull our “fingers out” and keep up Clean Garage high standards to compete in the future.

Talbot Express Camper Van- turns up with a broken EXHAUST MANIFOLD parts Difficult to Find?

We located a second hand exhaust manifold for this Talbot Express

When this vehicle pulled in, the name reminded me of a car that I bought in 1979. I had forgotten the name “Talbot Express” ever existed, but it brought back great memories of my early days as a young mechanic.

Talbot Express

Commer van conversion

I attended the local college in the nearby town of Batley here in West Yorkshire, as an apprentice mechanic, studying to pass my mechanics exam. All the guys in my class worked for different garages from all the Towns in the area. As you can imagine over the course some of us became great friends. One of them worked as an apprentice mechanic at a “Rootes Group Garage”. He worked on models from Hillman the Hunter and the more famous Hillman imp, a competitor for the BMC Minis that were very popular then. He also worked on Humber,Singers,Talbots and Commer vans.

He told me that Talbot was bringing out a new model called the “Horizon”. I was in the market for a new car at the time, and so went on a test drive. So was very impressed and struck a good deal with the salesman, buying a new Light green car. Thinking this car was wonderful and my girlfriend at the time (soon to be my wife) and I toured Europe in the car without any problems what so ever. I believe we had the car for ten years before selling it.

The Talbot express auto sleeper that came in for the exhaust manifold fitting was a 1986 model and in pretty good condition. They were made between 1981 and 1993 and were sold in the UK only as Talbots. The same model was sold in other parts of Europe under other marques, they were also known as the Alfa Romeo AR6, and in France the Peugeot J5 and the Citroen C25, and they were the last of any Talbot model to be sold in the UK.

Exhaust manifold was fixed and then an  added bonus of an immaculately restored Commer van conversion

In the same day we also had an added bonus of Commer Van converted into a motor home. The van was in for an MOT test and a few other jobs doing, but I could not resist taking some pictures for the Pellon Tyre blog. The model we had in was a 1974 model but they dropped the “Commer” name a couple of years later in 1976.

Motorcycle Battery Charging-Dont Forget to Charge yours in Winter ?

Post Updated 7th Jan 2014

Motorcycle Battery Charging;Your motorcycle battery should not be neglected

This is the time of year that motorbike owners will be storing their motorbikes away for winter, so dont forget about your Motorcycle Battery Charging . Some motorbike riders will opt to carry on riding theirs even in the winter to get to work on, specially in towns and cities where the roads are gritted and cleared of slush and snow pretty quickly.

In most of the country though bikers will store their bikes and use other forms of transport, for safety reasons. Also the dark nights come into the equation. It is less safe to ride motor cycles on the long winter dark nights than it is in summertime. Car drivers are the danger here, sometimes they just do not see bikers in the bad light?.

The over whelming number of bikers though, store away their motorbikes in the winter period. One very important thing to think about, is what to do with your Motorcycle Battery Charging. Believe it or not thousands of bikers just leave their Motorbike Battery stood over the winter period without any form of charging or maintenance. The bike will generally be stored in a cold shed or garage . Cold weather has a very large impact on your batteries which can even freeze in a very cold winter, we were amazed a couple of year ago when the temperature dropped to minus 10 degrees just how many car and motorcycle batteries actually froze up. These batteries failed of course and this is what happens to one that is left un-charged in the winter months.Motorcycle Battery Charging

How to store your motorcycle battery

When you store your bike it is best to disconnect your battery and give it a good charge with a small battery charger, a 12 volt 4 amp charger should be good enough for a 12 volt one. You should then check the battery at least once a month and recharge it when possible, also check the acid levels. By doing this you ensure that when the spring comes and it is time to get the bike out again, then your bike will start first time and be in a healthy state. It is surprising how many bikers have to buy a new one at the beginning of a new season. Another good gadget now out on the market is an intelligent charger. This is known as a “connect and forget” these are by “CTEK” and also “NUMAX” and are a good investment to keep your car or Motorcycle Battery Charging in tip top condition whatever the winter throws at us…

“CTEK chargers are the smartest chargers in the World, designed and developed in Sweden. They are highly versatile, easy to use, compact  chargers and proven award winners*. All the products manufactured by CTEK are tested and then constructed to the highest standards, which are far in excess of those required by the top product testing agencies such as the independent testing and certification agency, TÜV Rheinland Group”… http://www.ctekchargers.co.uk/

Waste Battery Recycling;Dispose of your old batteries safely

This post is about Battery Recycling. Hence, the right thing to do when disposing of your old battery. Therefore, it does not really matter which type of battery that you are disposing of. But for now I really mean your old

golf, scooter, mobility, ups and car batteries. What most people do not know is that these types of battery are re-processed and go for Waste Battery Recycling . Almost all these batteries can be made into brand new ones. If you buy your battery from the internet.

Then you will probably have to dispose of the old one yourself. Perhaps, if you are a disabled person you should ask a relative or friend to dispose of the old battery for you. We find that for some reason our customers want to save their old battery. But they deteriorate even further.

Especially, with age and really should be got rid of. You will find that your old batteries. Will be accepted at your nearest council Waste Battery Recycling plant or licensed scrap metal dealer. Either, you or a friend can take them to the tip. Because they will be taken care of and then  be reprocessed into new ones. Job done!www.batteriesontheweb.co.uk

“While it can be easy to just consider throwing your old battery into the trash, its actually against the law. Most of the UK requires that Waste Battery Recycling should be done through a safe means of disposal. Usually this means taking them back to the store where you purchased them, or finding another available waste disposal.

Currently less than 25% of used ones are returned using a safe disposal method, which does actually harm the environment through landfills and other trash disposal”. Andalay High Performance Solar Power Systems … Currently less than 25% of used batteries are returned using a safe disposal method, which does actually harm the environment through landfills and other trash disposal
At the moment 95% of waste battery products are re-processed into new ones. These are from the ones that safely make it to the re-processing plant. Some are discarded or just dumped, but the battery re-processing rates are in fact getting higher and higher, which is a great attribute to the industry, from cradle to grave so to speak.
