038 Car battery is still very popular after all these years

It does not seem that long ago. That I was fitting the 038 Car battery onto new models of cars. Hence, at the small garage that I worked at in Batley,West Yorkshire here in the UK.

Although the majority of cars that we worked on. Were British Leyland , we also repaired other makes of car. So, just as we do in today’s modern garages. Consequently, we also fitted our own tyres and Discount Car Batteries in those days. Because, these were the pre- quick fit days. As a result, the motorists came to us for a puncture repair or a new tyre. Where as today you would probably take the puncture to a specialised tyre depot. Not the local garage.

This also applied to car batteries, if one failed we would fit the battery ourselves, this was my job as I was classed as the junior and was given all the small jobs around the garage including doing puncture repairs and sweeping up. The most popular cars that we serviced were the smaller cars such as the original Minis, Maxis and other smaller cars such as Rovers and Riley’s almost all were fitted with an 038 Car battery. We also repaired other makes which included Hillman’s and Triumph’s. One of my favourites was the Hillman Imp although they were always in the garage having repairs done to them, they had some inherent faults and also rusted badly.

One thing in common the 038 battery

All these cars had one thing in common, they nearly all were fitted with a Type 038 Car battery  , especially the later models. This was to be one of the most popular batteries ever and in my opinion it still is today. These cars are now classed as classic cars and we still sell a tremendous amount of these batteries.

Later on in the 1970,s this battery was used on many of the Vauxhall cars such as the Vauxhall Viva and a new higher amperage battery came out for some of the bigger engined cars the 015 battery. This 015 battery is exactly the same size as the 038 battery but has more power and the 038 Car battery  is often replaced by the 015 when a new battery is required. Other popular cars to have this battery fitted was the new range of Triumphs, such as the Spitfires and the Dolomites and Toledo’s most of which were fitted with an 038 Car battery or a 015 battery.

Many of these cars have still survived and are lovingly restored by their owners. In Summer you can often spot these cars out for run on a nice sunny day. We recently supplied an 038 Car battery to the owner of Triumph Dolomite and I took a picture of the Numax battery sitting next to the engine, in the battery compartment. One of the other most popular cars that we supply batteries for are on the Triumph Spitfire. In my opinion this is still one of best looking cars on the road today.

6 VOLT Classic Car Batteries for your vintage car

Of course, I always try to keep up to date with my blog ! so, updating and re-writing is common practice for me. naturally this post is no exception and perhaps this is a good thing. Because new legislation about battery acid is making life a bit more difficult. In brief, these batteries are what we call “dry charged”. meaning that the battery is emptied of the acid and sent to the customer in a dry state plus an acid pack.

Fundamentally, the law now forbids us to send out any form of acid packs. So, we now have to take each sale as they come ! meaning that we deliver them in a fully charged state in our own transport. Consequently, we can only do this when we have a few more deliveries in the same area. Hence it probably, will not be a next day delivery. All in all, we have not found a way round this problem as screw top batteries are difficult to seal with a vacuum.

if there is ant machine out there that could seal and vacuum a battery then please let me know !

The dream of owning a classic car

So, owning a classic or antique car is a dream shared by some men and women. Cruising down the high street on a lovely sunny day in an old or vintage car not only turns heads but it makes you feel great knowing that you’ve invested in something that will hold its value.Classic Car Batteries

Cars like this Rolls-Royce Wraith are fitted with Classic Car Batteries 6 volt batteries, some are converted to 12 Volt Battery systems but in general the vintage car owners prefer to keep the cars the way they were originally.
Of course, many car enthusiasts decide to restore their antique car that they’ve purchased. Generally speaking, many go to specialists. of course who will restore the car for them at a price. Significantly, such a company in the Halifax area of Yorkshire, UK, is Horsfields of Halifax.

Customers, know that even though it involves many hours of time and hard work. So, the end result is well worth the effort, and like the car in this image, an “eye catcher” is born.

Where do we get the parts ?

Firstly, things to do if you are planning to  restore an classic car, Especially if its a weekend job ! is to find out where you’ll go to find parts required. Of course, most people do know where they will get the parts. But to start a restoration job it may be best practice to have some information. In effect, about where to get parts from.

Most enthusiasts will probably have visited many of the vintage car shows. Of course, that are staged throughout the year. Vintage car parts can be difficult to find. Generally you would not be able to walk into your local spare parts supply store and buy the part.

Instead you will have to do a bit of research. Finding out where the antique car parts you need can be purchased. Of course, this can be done by buying specialist magazines. Significantly though the latest trend for buying car parts is on the internet. Including buying your tyres and your batteriesClassic Car Batteries .

The first place to look these days to research vintage car parts is on the internet

Although specialist magazines are still popular in the UK. Specifically, giving you web-site addresses where you can find the parts that you re requiring. Just go to a search engine and type in “vintage car parts” followed by which ever town you live in. Subsequently, by typing up your battery part number. Of course, you can also do the same if you are looking for Classic Car Batteries for your new project.

With amazing accuracy, many different results will come up. Giving you a local source for your parts. Consequently, there are several web sites that work with their customers to find the old car parts they need for renovation . Simply request a part and the company will locate the required parts for you. Just the same as if you want a modern day car part (nothing new) .

There are also companies who only specialize in vintage car parts.

They collect a vast collection of varied vintage parts. Looking like a breakers yard. So, and offering them to their customers through their website or store front.

Of course, there may be additional charges for shipping. But if you’ve been having trouble locating a specific part. Hence, this can be the best way of buying what you want. This also applies to Classic Car Batteries. Many battery companies now sell 6 volt Classic Car Batteries along side all the other modern day car batteries.

Classic Car Batteries

Typical smaller type scrap yard

Sometimes you can find a treasure in an unexpected place. Auto wreckers (scrap or breakers yards) often have some antique vintage cars in their yards. These are cars that were not restored and they reached a bad condition . Fortunately, they are now being used strictly for parts. Surprisingly, it is wonderful what different parts that you can pick up from one of these yards.
More modern auto salvage companies keep a very good computer record of their stocks. Covering all the car models that are on their site. So making it relatively simple to call them and inquire about the part. Naturally, citing the type of classic or antique car that you have. Of course not forgetting that you will probably need the log book and chassis number. Particularly, of your soon to be restored car. Expressly, this helps the breakers find you the correct part and wastes you less time.

6 volt Classic Car Batteries need to be new

Before you venture out to a scrap yard them remember ! Some of the large scrap car yards do not allow you to just wonder around. Smaller auto wreckers prefer their customers to actually visit their location. So, to look over the vehicles themselves. Of course, it will be a good idea to take along some tools. Remember only buy new vintage tyres and Classic 096 Car Batteries, so that you can be sure of the condition. So, many owners of second hand cars suffer from flats batteries in the first three months of ownership.

When buying your battery online. In my opinion stick to some golden rules. So, really cheap batteries may not have the amps that they are supposed to have. To avoid this then I recommend that you buy a reputable make of battery. Of course, I do recommend the makes that we sell. But they are all tried and tested. Brands suck as ApolloPower, Bosch, Varta, Lucas and Banner batteries are all tried and tested. Thanks !
