What I’ve Learned About Running a Successful Garage Business
People often ask me what the secret is to running a successful garage business.
The truth is that there is no secret formula.
Over the years I have seen many garages come and go. Some arrived with huge investments, fancy premises and expensive equipment, only to disappear a few years later. Others started with very little and gradually built a strong reputation that kept customers coming back year after year.
Having owned and operated Pellon Tyre and Autocentre in Halifax since 1989, I have learned a few valuable lessons along the way.
Some of them learned the hard way.

Anyone thinking about starting a garage business is usually waiting for the perfect moment.
The problem is that there never is one.
When I look back over the years, there has always been something to worry about.
Interest rates rise.
Fuel prices increase.
Energy bills go through the roof.
Parts become difficult to obtain.
The economy slows down.
Yet good businesses continue to survive.
The important thing is to be prepared and to keep your feet firmly on the ground.
Good Staff Are Worth Their Weight in Gold
If there is one lesson that stands above all others, it is this:
Look after your staff.
Over the years I have been fortunate enough to employ some excellent people.
Many have stayed with the business for years and in some cases decades.
Good mechanics are not easy to find.
Good MOT testers are not easy to find.
Good tyre fitters are not easy to find.
When you find them, treat them well.
I have always believed that if staff are respected and looked after, they will take pride in their work and look after the customers.
Customers quickly notice when a business has a happy workforce.
Likewise, they notice when staff are unhappy.
A successful garage is built on people, not just equipment.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is garage owners trying to stand still.
The motor trade changes constantly.
Modern vehicles are far more sophisticated than the cars I worked on as a young mechanic.
Today’s workshops need the following:
- Modern diagnostic equipment
- Wheel alignment systems
- TPMS equipment
- Air conditioning service machines
- Digital MOT equipment
At Pellon Tyres we continue to invest whenever possible.
Most recently we upgraded our MOT testing equipment with modern systems supplied by Boston Equipment.
The latest brake tester even communicates directly with VOSA.
Equipment is expensive, but failing to invest can be even more expensive. It always surprises me when a customer turns up for a wheel alignment and we find out that he has just had steering and suspension parts fitted at another garage. But the garage didnt have any tracking equipment; what a shambles.
Look After the Pennies
My late parents often used to say the following:
“Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves.”
I still believe that today.
Running a business successfully is not always about how much money comes in.
It is often about how much money goes out.
I have always tried to run the business sensibly.
That doesn’t mean being mean.
It means being careful.
Before buying something, ask yourself:
Do I really need it?
Will it improve the business?
Will it improve customer service?
Will it pay for itself?
Those simple questions have saved me a lot of money over the years.
Build Strong Relationships With Your Bank
One thing that has helped me enormously is maintaining a good relationship with my bank.
I have dealt with the same bank for around fifty years.
That sort of relationship cannot be built overnight.
Banks get plenty of criticism, but I have always found that if you deal fairly with them and keep them informed, they are much more willing to help when times become difficult.
Every business experiences challenges.
The important thing is having trusted people around you when those challenges arrive.

The same applies to leasing companies and suppliers.
Over the years I have worked with the same leasing company for many years.
They understand my business and I understand theirs.
That relationship has allowed us to invest in equipment and grow the business without putting unnecessary strain on cash flow.
Trust takes years to build but can be invaluable during difficult periods.
Customers Are Your Bread and Butter
This is probably the most important lesson of all.
Customers pay the bills.
Without customers there is no business.
Every customer who walks through the door should be treated with respect.
It does not matter whether they are buying four premium tyres or simply asking for a free tyre pressure check.
They deserve the same courtesy.
At Pellon Tyres we have always tried to explain things honestly.
If a vehicle needs repairs, we explain why.
If a vehicle does not need repairs, we tell the customer that as well.
That honesty has helped us build trust throughout Halifax, Calderdale and the surrounding areas.
Many of our customers have been coming to us for decades.
That is something I am very proud of.
Technology Has Changed the Industry
When I first entered the tyre trade, paperwork was everywhere.
Today, computers control almost every aspect of the business.
Digital invoicing.
Online bookings.
Electronic MOT records.
Diagnostic systems.
Websites and social media.
Every garage owner needs to embrace technology whilst still maintaining good old-fashioned customer service.
The businesses that combine both tend to be the ones that thrive.
The Importance of Reputation
Advertising can bring customers through the door.
Reputation brings them back.
A good reputation takes years to build and only minutes to damage.
That is why every job matters.
Whether it is a simple puncture repair or a major mechanical repair, the aim should always be the same:
Do the job properly.

Looking back over nearly four decades at Pellon Tyres and more than sixty years in the motor trade, I can honestly say that success is not built on luck.
It is built on good people, careful financial management, continuous investment and treating customers fairly.
The motor trade has changed beyond recognition since I first started.
Yet the fundamentals remain exactly the same.
Look after your staff.
Look after your customers.
Look after your finances.
And never stop learning.
