Sparkling CUPRA Gets a Full Four-Wheel Alignment at Pellon Tyres Halifax

Tuesday saw a particularly smart visitor arrive at Pellon Tyre & Autocentre here in Halifax – a sparkling clean CUPRA.
The car was clearly well looked after, but its owner had spotted something that no motorist really wants to see – uneven tyre wear.
Uneven or premature tyre wear can have several causes, but incorrect wheel alignment is certainly one of the things we need to investigate.
The customer had done the right thing by noticing the problem before simply replacing the tyres and carrying on as normal.
So we put the CUPRA onto our four-wheel alignment equipment, with Adam carrying out the work.
And the before-and-after pictures tell the story nicely.

What Does Four-Wheel Alignment Actually Do? Cupra 4 Wheel Alignment
Some motorists still think wheel alignment simply means adjusting the front wheels until the steering wheel sits straight.
Modern four-wheel alignment is much more sophisticated than that.
The purpose is to accurately measure the geometry of the vehicle’s wheels and suspension and compare those measurements with the specifications laid down for that particular make and model.
Every vehicle is different.
A little family hatchback doesn’t necessarily have the same geometry settings as a performance-orientated CUPRA.
That’s why our computerised alignment equipment contains vehicle-specific information.
Once Adam selects the correct vehicle details, the equipment tells us the manufacturer’s specified tolerances against which the actual measurements can be compared.
That’s an important point.
We aren’t guessing where the wheels should be pointing.
We are measuring them.

Red Before – Green Afterwards
The photographs taken during this CUPRA job demonstrate the process particularly well.
On the alignment screen, red figures indicate measurements that are outside the required tolerance.
Once Adam has carried out the necessary adjustments and the readings come within the correct specified range, they change to green.
So customers can actually see what has happened.
Before the work – red readings.
After the corrections – green readings.
It’s one of those occasions where a picture really does explain the job better than a thousand technical words.

How Is Four-Wheel Alignment Carried Out? Cupra 4 Wheel Alignment
The car is positioned correctly on the alignment ramp, and measuring equipment is attached to or referenced from each wheel.
The system then establishes the position and direction of the wheels with great accuracy.
Measurements can include toe, camber and caster, depending upon the vehicle and the adjustments provided by its suspension design.
The computer compares these measurements with the correct specifications for that particular CUPRA model.
Adam can then see exactly which measurements are within tolerance and which require attention.
Where adjustment is available, steering and suspension components are carefully altered to bring the geometry back within specification.
Measurements are then taken again.
This process continues until the adjustable settings are where they should be.
Finally, the readings are checked once more.
That’s where those green figures become very satisfying!

What Is a Toe?
One of the most common alignment measurements is called toe.
Imagine standing above the car and looking down at the wheels.
Ideally, the wheels need to point in the direction intended by the vehicle manufacturer.
If the fronts of the wheels point slightly towards each other, that’s known as toe-in.
If they point slightly away from each other, that’s toe-out.
We’re talking about relatively small measurements.
However, over thousands of miles, even a relatively small error can contribute to substantial tyre wear.
Instead of the tyre rolling cleanly along the road, incorrect toe can cause it to scrub slightly as the vehicle travels.
Eventually the tread pays the price.
What Is Camber? Cupra 4 Wheel Alignment
Camber is another important measurement.
This time imagine looking at the wheel from directly in front of the car.
Camber describes how much the wheel tilts inward or outward from vertical.
Modern suspension systems are designed with carefully calculated camber characteristics because they affect how the tyre contacts the road, particularly when the vehicle is cornering.
Incorrect camber can also contribute to uneven wear across the tyre.
And What About Caster?
Caster relates to the angle of the steering axis when viewed from the side of the vehicle.
It plays an important role in steering stability and the tendency of the steering to return towards the straight-ahead position after turning.
Not every alignment angle can be adjusted on every vehicle.
That’s why proper measurement is important.
Sometimes an unusual reading can also point towards worn or damaged suspension components rather than simply something needing adjustment.
Why Does Wheel Alignment Change? Cupra 4 Wheel Alignment
There are plenty of reasons.
Suspension components naturally wear as vehicles get older.
Steering or suspension repairs can also alter geometry, which is why alignment is often worth checking after certain components have been replaced.
Then, of course, there are potholes on many Yorkshire roads.
We know all about those here in Yorkshire!
A hard impact with a pothole or kerb can potentially disturb the vehicle’s alignment.
And around Halifax and Calderdale, our cars certainly don’t have an easy life.
We have hills, bends, rough surfaces, sunken drain covers and plenty of roads that have taken a hammering over the years.
Anybody regularly travelling around Halifax, Sowerby Bridge, Elland, Queensbury, Northowram and the surrounding Calderdale countryside will know exactly what I mean.
Sometimes avoiding one pothole simply seems to put you in line for the next one!
Uneven Tyre Wear Is Trying to Tell You Something
Tyres can be very good messengers.
The problem is that we don’t always listen to them.
If one side of a tyre is wearing noticeably faster than the other, something may be wrong.
Sometimes the outside of the tyre looks perfectly acceptable while the inside edge is wearing badly.
That’s why we always encourage motorists to look across as much of the tyre tread as they safely can rather than simply glancing at the outside edge.
The owner of this CUPRA had noticed a tyre-wear problem and acted upon it.
That potentially saves money because there’s little point fitting expensive new tyres if an alignment problem is simply going to start wearing those out as well.
CUPRA – From SEAT Performance Badge to a Brand of Its Own: Cupra 4 Wheel Alignment
The CUPRA story is an interesting one.
Older motorists will probably remember CUPRA originally appearing on sporty versions of SEAT cars.
The name itself came from Cup Racing.
During the 1990s and 2000s, cars such as the Ibiza Cupra and Leon Cupra helped establish the name amongst drivers wanting something sportier and more exciting than the standard model.
For years, seeing the Cupra badge on the back of a SEAT meant you were looking at one of the performance versions.
But things were about to change considerably.
CUPRA Becomes Its Own Brand
In 2018, CUPRA was officially launched as a separate brand.
It remained part of the wider SEAT and Volkswagen Group family, but CUPRA began developing its own identity rather than simply being the performance badge attached to a SEAT.
The CUPRA Ateca became the first model launched under the standalone CUPRA identity.
Then came a car that really established what the new brand was about – the CUPRA Formentor.
Unlike earlier CUPRA models that had close SEAT equivalents, the Formentor was developed specifically as a CUPRA.
Its sharp styling helped the brand become instantly recognisable on British roads.
The range subsequently expanded further, including the CUPRA Born, bringing full electric power into the family.
CUPRA has managed to find an interesting position in the UK market – sporty-looking cars with plenty of technology but without necessarily carrying the price tag of some traditional premium performance marques.
Modern Cars Need Accurate Geometry: Cupra 4 Wheel Alignment
The CUPRA in our Halifax workshop demonstrates why modern alignment equipment has become so important.
Cars have changed enormously since my early days in the tyre trade.
Wheels have become larger.
Tyres have become wider and lower in profile.
Suspension systems have become increasingly sophisticated.
And motorists quite rightly expect their cars to handle, steer and brake extremely well.
But all that clever engineering relies on the wheels and tyres operating at the angles intended by the vehicle designers.
When the geometry is wrong, tyre wear can increase and the car may not behave exactly as intended.
Good Tyres Deserve Good Alignment
I’ve always believed there’s little point spending good money on quality tyres and then allowing incorrect alignment to wear them away.
It’s a bit like buying a good pair of shoes and then walking everywhere with one foot pointing sideways!
Eventually something is going to wear out.
For motorists around Halifax and Calderdale, having the alignment checked can be particularly worthwhile if you’ve hit a substantial pothole, had steering or suspension work carried out, noticed uneven tyre wear or feel that the steering isn’t quite as it used to be.
Sometimes everything will be perfectly fine.
And if it is, we’ll tell you.
That’s always been our way at Pellon.
Red to Green – Job Done: Cupra 4 Wheel Alignment
This particular CUPRA was a nice example of what modern four-wheel alignment is all about.
The customer noticed unusual tyre wear.
Adam put the car onto our alignment equipment.
The computer compared the measurements with the correct tolerances for the vehicle.
The initial readings showed the problem areas in red.
Adam made the appropriate adjustments.
The final measurements came back green.
That’s exactly what we want to see.
After all my years in the tyre trade, I still find something satisfying about watching those red readings move back into the green.
Perhaps that’s just the old tyre man in me!
The sparkling CUPRA could then leave our Halifax workshop with its alignment corrected and hopefully with a much happier future ahead for its tyres.
Another interesting car, another proper job and another day at Pellon Tyre & Autocentre here in Halifax, in the heart of my beloved Yorkshire.
