Customer Thought It Was The Battery
🔋 Customer Thought It Was the Battery – It Turned Out to Be Something Else
It’s a job we see time and time again here at
Pellon Tyre and Autocentre — and it caught one customer out just the other day.
The car wouldn’t start, and straight away the customer said the following:
👉 “It’ll be the battery, won’t it?”
Now, to be fair, that’s what most people think — especially in colder weather or after a few short runs around town.
But in this case, it turned out to be something completely different.
🚗 The problem – car wouldn’t start: Customer Thought It Was The Battery
The customer had:
- Slow cranking
- Dashboard lights flickering
- Eventually, the car wouldn’t start at all
All signs that do point towards a flat battery.
But as we always say – it’s not worth guessing.
🔧 What we found in the workshop
After testing the battery properly, we found:
👉 The battery was actually in decent condition
That’s when we looked a bit deeper.
The real issue was:
- A failing alternator
- Not charging the battery properly while driving
So what was happening was the following:
- The battery was slowly draining
- Until eventually, it had nothing left to start the car
⚠️ Why this matters: Customer Thought It Was The Battery
This is where people can get caught out.
If we had just:
- Fitted a new battery
👉 The problem would have come straight back
Because the root cause hadn’t been fixed.
🔋 Battery vs alternator – what’s the difference?
In simple terms:
- Battery → starts the car
- Alternator → keeps the battery charged while driving
If the alternator fails, even a brand-new battery won’t last long.
🧠 Common signs it’s NOT just the battery
Watch out for:
- Battery going flat repeatedly
- Warning lights on the dash
- Electrical issues (dim lights, flickering)
- Car cutting out while driving
These often point to something deeper.
👍 The outcome: Customer Thought It Was The Battery
Once we replaced the faulty alternator and checked the system:
- The battery held its charge properly
- The car started first time
- Problem solved 👍
📍 Local advice for Halifax drivers
If your car struggles to start, don’t just assume it’s the battery.
We always recommend a proper check at
Pellon Tyre and Autocentre
It can save you:
- Time
- Money
- And a lot of frustration
🔋 What about hybrid cars? Customer Thought It Was The Battery
With hybrid vehicles, things work a bit differently.
They actually have:
- A high-voltage battery (drives the car electrically)
- A normal 12V battery (runs systems and starts the electronics)
Most starting issues are still linked to the 12V battery, just like a normal car.
⚠️ Hybrid problems we’re starting to see
At Pellon Tyre and Autocentre, we’re seeing more hybrids coming in with the following:
- Flat 12V batteries
- Cars not “powering up” at all
- Warning messages on the dash
- Intermittent starting issues
And again — people often assume it’s just “the battery”.
🧠 The key difference
On a hybrid:
- There’s no traditional alternator like a petrol or diesel car
- The 12V battery is charged through the hybrid system instead
So if something isn’t right:
👉 it could be the 12V battery
👉 or it could be a fault in the charging system
👍 Important advice for hybrid owners
- Don’t assume it’s the main (big) battery — it rarely is
- Most faults are still down to the smaller 12V battery
- Proper testing is even more important than ever
🚗 In plain terms: Customer Thought It Was The Battery
Hybrid cars still suffer from “battery-type” problems —
But the cause isn’t always the same as a normal car.
👉 That’s why a proper check is essential before replacing anything.
🚗 Final thoughts
This was a simple case of the following:
👉 “Looks like a battery problem… but wasn’t.”
And it’s exactly why proper diagnosis matters.
If you’re unsure, it’s always better to get it checked rather than guess
