Solar Power Comes to Pellon Tyres – Investing in the Future
Running a busy garage in Halifax has never been cheap. Over the years, I have seen fuel prices rise, business rates increase, insurance costs climb and, more recently, energy bills reach levels that would have been hard to imagine a few years ago.
As the owner of Pellon Tyres and Autocentre, I am always looking at ways to improve the business and keep costs under control without affecting the service we provide to our customers. Like many small businesses throughout Yorkshire, we have felt the impact of rising costs from every direction.
That is why I am pleased to say that we have recently taken a significant step forward by having a new solar power system installed at our Halifax depot.
The system is based around a SolaX solar installation and is designed to help reduce our electricity consumption from the grid. Like many business owners, I am hoping it will help bring our electricity bills down whilst also making the business a little greener for the future.
The Rising Cost of Running a Garage
Most people visiting a tyre and autocentre only see the customer-facing side of the business. They see tyres being fitted, MOT tests being carried out and vehicles being repaired.
What they don’t always see is the amount of electricity required to keep a modern garage operating.
We use tyre fitting machines, wheel balancers, vehicle lifts, air compressors, diagnostic equipment, computers, heating systems and lighting throughout the workshop.
Many of these systems operate throughout the working day.
Back in the early days of Pellon Tyres, things were much simpler. Garages relied far less on electronic equipment. Today’s vehicles are packed with technology, and garages must invest heavily in specialised equipment just to keep up.
As a result, electricity has become one of the major running costs for many independent garages.

Like many business owners, I spent a long time looking at the different options available before making a decision.
Solar technology has advanced enormously over the past decade.
Modern solar panels are more efficient than ever before, and battery storage systems allow excess electricity generated during the day to be stored and used later when needed.
The SolaX system appealed to us because it offers smart monitoring, efficient energy management and the ability to make the most of the electricity generated on site.
When the sun is shining over Halifax and Calderdale, the system can help power many of the electrical items we use every day.
Whilst Yorkshire is not exactly famous for endless sunshine, we actually receive far more usable daylight than many people realise.
Even on cloudy days, solar panels continue generating electricity.

The aim is to reduce our dependence on buying electricity from the grid and to provide some protection against future energy price increases.

However, generating some of our own power gives us a little more control over our future operating costs.
For a family business that has served Halifax motorists for many years, that is an important consideration.

At Pellon Tyres, we already recycle tyres responsibly and dispose of waste materials through approved channels.
Adding solar power is another small step towards reducing our environmental footprint.
It won’t solve every problem overnight, but every positive change helps.

Solar energy may seem like a modern invention, but the idea has actually been around for a surprisingly long time.

From the textile mills of the Industrial Revolution to modern engineering businesses, local people have always adapted to changing times.
Installing solar power at Pellon Tyres feels like another chapter in that tradition.
Keeping an Eye on the Future
One of the interesting aspects of the SolaX system is the ability to monitor energy production and consumption.
Modern technology allows us to see how much electricity is being generated and how much is being used throughout the day.
As someone who enjoys seeing how things work, I find it fascinating.
There is something satisfying about seeing the workshop running whilst knowing that some of the electricity is being produced by sunlight falling on our own roof.
Hoping for Lower Bills
Of course, if I am being honest, I will not complain if the electricity bills start getting smaller.
Like many small business owners, I sometimes wonder what new tax, levy or cost increase will arrive next.
Running a business has never been easy, and every saving helps.
If solar power allows us to reduce our overheads, that can only be good news for the future of the business and the customers we serve.

Pellon Tyres has always tried to move with the times.
Over the years we have invested in new tyre fitting equipment, modern wheel alignment systems, advanced vehicle diagnostics and improved workshop facilities.
The installation of our new SolaX solar system is simply another example of that commitment.
We remain proud to serve motorists throughout Halifax, Calderdale, Brighouse, Elland and the surrounding areas.
Hopefully the Yorkshire weather will do its part and provide plenty of sunshine in the months ahead.
After all, every unit of electricity generated by the sun is one less we have to buy from the supplier.
And in today’s world, that has to be a good thing.
