Honda CR-V Brake Problems – Another Busy Saturday at Pellon Tyres Halifax

Well, Saturday morning was certainly turning into brake day here at Pellon Tyre and Autocentre in Halifax!

We had already dealt with the Skoda Fabia that came in with squeaking brakes, followed by the Nissan Micra that needed new front discs and pads as well as exhaust repairs.

Then, as if somebody was trying to tell us something, the next vehicle through our doors with a braking problem was a very nice-looking Honda CR-V.

Fortunately, the owner was doing exactly the right thing.

There weren’t necessarily any dramatic grinding noises or warning lights. He simply wasn’t happy with the way the brakes were performing and wanted somebody to check them properly.

When it comes to brakes, I think that is always the sensible approach.

If something doesn’t feel right, have it checked.

Anybody who drives the same car regularly gets to know how it feels.

You know roughly how much pressure you normally put on the brake pedal. You know how quickly the car slows down, and you often notice small changes before they develop into something more serious.

Our Honda CR-V customer felt that the braking performance wasn’t as good as it should be.

Rather than waiting for things to get worse, he called into Pellon Tyres and asked us to take a look.

The CR-V was raised safely on one of our ramps, and Alex began his inspection.

Checking brakes properly involves more than simply having a quick look through the wheel.

Alex inspected the braking components and established that the Honda needed new front brake discs and brake pads.

The existing components had reached the stage where replacement was the sensible option.

As always, we spoke to the customer before carrying out any work.

We explained what Alex had found and gave him a price for replacing the front discs and pads.

The customer was happy with the price and gave us the go-ahead.

Why Brake Discs and Pads Often Need Replacing Together: Honda CR-V Brake Problems

Brake pads are designed to wear.

When you press the brake pedal, the pads are forced against the brake discs. The friction between the two surfaces slows the vehicle down.

Over thousands of miles, the friction material on the pads gradually wears away.

But the brake discs wear as well.

Every time the brakes are applied, a tiny amount of material can be worn from the surface of the disc. Over time, discs can become thinner, develop lips around their outer edges, become heavily scored or suffer from corrosion.

This is why we inspect both components.

Sometimes, as with the Skoda Fabia we had repaired earlier that Saturday morning, the discs are still perfectly serviceable, and only the pads need changing.

On other vehicles, such as this Honda CR-V, both the discs and pads have reached the point where replacement is necessary.

There’s no point guessing.

A Honda CR-V Is a Fair-Sized Vehicle

The Honda CR-V has been a very successful vehicle here in Britain.

Honda introduced the CR-V during the 1990s, when the idea of the modern family SUV was beginning to take off.

At the time, many traditional 4x4s were fairly agricultural vehicles. They were excellent for farms, rough tracks and towing but weren’t always the most comfortable vehicles for everyday family use.

The CR-V helped change that.

It combined the higher driving position and practicality people liked about a 4×4 with the comfort and driving characteristics of a normal road car.

That idea certainly caught on!

Today our roads are full of SUVs and crossovers, but the Honda CR-V was one of the vehicles that helped establish this type of car with British motorists.

Over the years it has earned a good reputation for practicality and Honda’s traditionally strong engineering.

We still see plenty of CR-Vs around Halifax and Calderdale.

There is another reason why I always take brake conditions seriously here in our part of Yorkshire.

We have hills everywhere!

Anyone living around Halifax will know exactly what I mean.

Drive out towards Queensbury and you’ve got serious climbs and descents. Head towards Wainstalls, Mount Tabor, Ogden, Hebden Bridge or Sowerby Bridge, and it’s much the same story.

Calderdale certainly wasn’t designed with easy motoring in mind!

A vehicle coming down one of our long Yorkshire hills relies heavily on its braking system.

The heavier the vehicle, the more energy the brakes have to deal with when slowing it down.

A family SUV such as a Honda CR-V is naturally a bigger and heavier vehicle than a little city car.

That doesn’t mean its brakes should wear unusually quickly – they are designed for the vehicle – but it does emphasise why keeping the braking system in good condition is so important.

Poor Brake Performance Shouldn’t Be Ignored

One interesting thing about this particular job was that the owner didn’t wait for something dramatic to happen.

He simply noticed that the braking performance wasn’t right.

That is something worth remembering.

Brake problems don’t always announce themselves with a terrible grinding noise.

Sometimes the first indication can simply be that the car doesn’t seem to stop quite as sharply as it used to.

Other warning signs can include:

Squeaking or squealing when braking.
Grinding noises from the wheels.
Vibration through the brake pedal.
Steering wheel vibration when braking.
The car pulling towards one side.
A brake pedal that feels different from normal.
Increased stopping distance.
A brake warning light appearing on the dashboard.

It did make us smile when we looked back at the morning.

Next came the Nissan Micra.

That one required front discs and pads after having some cheap pads fitted elsewhere, along with repairs to its rusted exhaust.

Then along came our Honda CR-V, whose owner simply wasn’t happy with its braking performance.

Three different cars.

Three different customers.

Three different sets of circumstances.

But they all had one thing in common – brakes.

That’s the motor trade for you.

Some days seem to bring nothing but tyres.

Another day it might be exhausts.

Then you get a Saturday morning when half of Halifax seems to have decided to have its brakes checked!

Jobs like this are exactly why I believe good independent garages remain important to local communities.

People don’t necessarily want complicated explanations.

They want somebody they can trust to look at their car and tell them what’s wrong.

Our Honda customer knew his brakes didn’t feel right.

We agreed on a price.

The customer authorised the work.

And we repaired the car.

Simple as that.

Cars have certainly changed during that time.

We now have hybrids, electric vehicles, complicated electronics and all sorts of driver assistance systems that we could only have dreamed about years ago.
