Diesel Cars-Do they Need More Engine Servicing-VW now in the limelight?

Do Diesel Cars Need More Engine Servicing

Here in the UK part of the European Union, we now see that Diesel Cars make up about half of the new cars that are sold. Over the past years diesel cars have become far more popular, mainly because of their lower running costs due to better fuel consumption and therefore lower running costs, especially in mainland Europe, in France for example diesel fuel (gazoil) is much cheaper than petrol (essence), but here in the UK it is the other way round, but diesel engines will give you more miles to the gallon, so it is still more economical to run Diesel Cars.

A slight drawback to me though is that the diesel cars should have a couple of services a year. Apart from a main service I think that they also need a second engine service. Lack of servicing can cause several problems for you diesel cars, especially if you only do low mileages and at lower speeds.

Diesel Cars

A diesel particulate filter used on many Diesel Cars

If the oil and filters are not change at regular periods then the fuel filter could get blocked causing blocked diesel injectors and the car will not run properly, this is now becoming more common for garages to deal with. Also the filter will eventually clog up and starve the engine of fuel. When the fuel is not correctly burned on firing then excess fuel will enter the engine and mix with the engine oil causing the engine parts to wear prematurely. So drivers who do not have their Diesel Cars serviced are really stacking up problems for the future.

A more serious problem that may occur with the diesel car is the advent of the “diesel particulate filter” or the DPF as it is known, which is in effect a catalytic converter for the diesel engine. The job of the DPF is to burn off at high temperature all the soot and carbon chemicals that are omitted from the diesel engine. These carbon particles are burned off at very high temperatures and the cleaner air is then released into the atmosphere.

Diesel cars need good runs out.

This is another reason why if you only drive short distances then you perhaps should buy a petrol (gasoline) car, because when you only drive a short distance, then the DPF does not complete a full cycle and the DPF then has to go through a process called “regeneration”. This is all part of drive for lower emissions technology and cleaner Diesel Cars .

The gist of this post is to have your  car serviced at regular intervals and if you only drive local, then do not buy  diesels. Problems with this type of  engine performance are now becoming more common, and things regarding emissions are going to get tougher with even lower emission targets coming in shortly.

To update this article , it is now thought that Diesel Cars engines give off far more harmful gases than originally thought, and the older models will be phased out quicker. In fact cities like Paris in France will ban older diesel vehicles in the near future and they are now putting the price of derv up to above the price of petrol.

White Jaguar XF estate calls in for a new tyre

Post updated  11/2/2014

Luckily for us the White Jaguar XF had the blowout just outside the depot and had new tyre fitted

We all need a bit of luck in business, every little helps. This Saturday morning (21/9/2013) turned out to be a very busy day. In fact we were heading for a record Saturday mornings takings. I usually go in on a Saturday to help with running about jobs, and I always take my camera, in case anything good happens, for example a nice looking car, or a classic car comes in for a battery fitting or a new set of tyres. There is always something interesting to photo and this Saturday was no exception.White Jaguar XF

The first thing that I liked was a lovely white Land Rover Discovery, for a new set of 255/55R19 Pirelli Scorpion tyres fitting. The Discovery 4 was in immaculate condition and I could not resist taking some pictures for my blog. This car has been made to carry heavy loads and is powered by a 3 litre inter-cooled turbo diesel engine, it has an eight speed automatic gearbox and is a car to be proud of. For more information about the Discovery 4…http://www.landrover.com/

The next car that came in this morning was the White Jaguar XF with a tyre blowout.

The car was owned by a local businessman from the village of Sowerby which is near Halifax. He was passing Pellon Tyres when he felt his car moving to the centre of the road, he had an instant deflation in his rear drivers side tyre, luckily for us he was right outside our tyre depot and limped in with his White Jaguar XF. Like the Discovery this was a lovely car and I had to take a couple of pictures for this blog.

The car was a White Jaguar XF estate car Know as the “Sports brake”, in white and was fitted on 245/45R18 Pirelli P-Zero tyres, we had a tyre in a fitted it to the Jaguar and the guy was off, simple! In my opinion this is a wonderful car and a pleasure to work on.

Exhausts Changed-to meet new European Union Emission Laws

Exhausts Changed

Exhausts systems also cost much more than 10 years ago

I can honestly say that I have lived during the most radical changes ever made to cars, due to the new rules about “global warming” and emissions from cars. Back in time when we had Vauxhall Vivas Cavaliers, Chrysler Horizons old type Minis and Ford Cortinas life in the garage was much easier and certainly more stable.

The exhaust systems on those cars would stay the same year after year. So much so that we could order systems in the hundreds at a time and kept a large stock, that we would always sell. In fact we could order exhausts systems by the container load and they would all be sold, (happy days).

"<yoastmark

Then the computer came along and car manufacturers could very quickly change car models, they became very flexible changing parts on different models at will.

This included systems. We were finding that Exhausts.  Like other parts would be left on the shelf unsold. Hence,we were becoming very reluctant at keeping exhausts on the shelves. Without, getting stuck with them.Consequently, at this time exhaust wholesalers began to spring up.As a result, and in a short period of time. We decided not to keep an exhaust stock at all. So, and leave it to the wholesalers. In fact. The last stock that we kept in was from Bosal Exhausts. Probably, (the best Exhausts in the World) and that was in the late nineties.

Exhausts Changed

The next thing to affect Exhausts were Vehicle Emissions controls. These were introduced by the British Government. Thus, requiring that cars had to be fitted with “Catalytic Converters.” These cats as we know them. Therefore, are fitted between the car’s engine onto the exhaust pipe system. The gas from the engine is filtered through the cat. Into a very fine filter system. Made from ceramics to withstand the high temperature. The cat has also some precious metals to help filter out the particulates. (this is why the cats are so expensive).

Some car models have a direct fitting cat to the engine. Thus, the engine sends out waste gasses. That are filtered by the cat. As a result, then the cleaner gases pass through the rest of the system. The Exhausts Changed boxes contain a fiberglass type material. Naturally,  that has an extra filter effect but will also muffle the sound that the gases make when leaving the engine. We all know how noisy a car is when the exhaust breaks.

Exhausts systems are better made these days

exhausts

bmw mini back box a modern type exhaust

Some cars have two or even three boxes depending on the size of the engine and car. Here in the UK we do not change the exhaust until it actually breaks, and the we have it replaced and in my opinion this is the best thing to do. Even the worst looking rusty old Car Exhausts  can last for years and it is no use changing your exhaust just because it looks rusty and old, replace it when it breaks, unless it fails the MOT test. The main part to fail on the test will be the cat, if it fails the test the cat will need replacing.

To summarise Cheap Exhaust systems are far better made these and certainly last much longer, cats are also well made and will only fail if the ceramic cone gets damaged or if you go through flooded water, this usually affects the engine management system and your engine light could be illuminated on your dash, triggered off by your cars computer and a replacement will be needed.

Nissan Micra passed MOT TEST- after much Welding to hold the car together again?

Nissan Micra passed MOT TEST

Nissan Micra passed MOT TEST

A young couple with a new baby brought their car to us a Nissan Micra.Hence  for the MOT test. This was about the third year running that the car had been tested. Thus, by us and believe me the car was not getting any younger (like us all). The biggest problem with this Micra was the “rust”. Because, oh boy was it rusty.

We had advised the corrosion on its last MOT test in 2011. But nothing had been done and the rust had got worse.Especially with all the rain that we have had here in Halifax West Yorkshire. The young couple that owned the car. Were like us all “cash strapped” .Therefore, could not afford to buy another car. So like all “kind hearted” garage owners I did them an affordable deal. So that their car would pass the MOT test and last them at least another year.

Our top man at these type of repairs was our old mechanic Andy Mawdsley. It took Andy one and a half days to do the body fabrication and the other little jobs that needed doing to get the car through the test. Our main worry was the cars “cross member”, which is a piece of the body work that connects the two front wings together and stabilisers the whole car. The part was totally unavailable from Nissan or all the replacement part specialists.

Nissan Micra passed MOT TEST

Passed MOT test with flying colours?

Our last resort was good old E-bay. We found a company that produce obsolete Nissan parts and we had a cross member by the next day (wonderful). The Nissan was all finished and the Nissan Micra passed MOT TEST with flying colours. The young couple were happy with the job and the price and we were proud to help them, with a bit of luck we may have customers for life.

M-O-T Testing Advice- For Diesel Engine Car Owners

Updated 12th May 2014

M-O-T Testing Advice;Pellon tyre and Autocentre offer advice for M.O.T testing for diesel owners.

M-O-T Testing Advice says. That the  first thing to do before having your diesel engined car in for a test. Is to read a free leaflet from VOSA, that is available from your local M.O.T centre.
This DVLA Rules leaflet. Will show the M-O-T Testing Advice to do and look out for during the “diesel smoke testing” part of the test.
This part of the test is very important. It helps the environment by testing the smoke emissions given out by your car. This helps to minimize the pollution and the fuel efficiency of your car. The test also checks that your car engine is working correctly. Therefore, so reduces waste, “the black smoke that you see coming from a

M-O-T Testing Advice

diesel engine”.
The important M-O-T Testing Advice when introducing a diesel car to the M.O.T test. Is to make sure that the car is well maintained at all times.Because,a regular oil and filter changes are always a good thing on diesel engine cars.
You must have your cam belt monitored. Also changed at the recommended periods,(most good garages will help you and advise you about your camshaft replacement periods). Here at Pellon Autocentre we advice every car presented with a service. This helps our customers plan ahead. For this reason, and not suffer the problem of a broken belt and a possible damaged engine.

Before your diesel M.O.T test

Prior to your test, it is advisable to give your car a short run , this will warm your engine and therefore produce less smoke during the test, some people also put a diesel additive into the car before the diesel test.It is important that you do not mess with the governor settings as these are set to help your car engine run efficiently. When the time comes to do the smoke test the tester will check the oil temperature, this is to ensure that the engine is warm enough to carry out the test.

The tester will then proceed to accelerate the engine until the engines governor kicks in, he will do this up to a maximum of six times. This often scares customers who are watching the test, but the tester will not hold the engine at full speed for any long length of time.
This part of the M-O-T Testing Advice is very important.” If your car has been properly maintained the test should not cause any damage to your engine”, if you are not sure of the condition of your car engine you should tell the tester before he continues with this part of the test. M.O.T Testers are not responsible for the condition of your engine prior to the test it is your responsibility.
I hope that this part of the test explains more to you and is informative, Pellon Autocentre carry out M.O.T testing in Halifax.
