There to stop your car !

Your brake pads are one of the most important part of your cars braking system. Because, they are the component that makes contact to the discs. Applying, the pressure and friction to your cars brake discs. Of course, this is the pressure and friction that is applied to the brake discs.

Slowing and stopping your vehicle. Once your brakes are applied. At this instance, the pressure from the master cylinder stops the wheels from turning and your vehicle stops. The role of How Brake Pads Work is really very simple, but the construction of the brake pads is not.

Did you know that Brake pads were once made out of asbestos !

So, asbestos was used to make brake pads. Especially, in my younger days when I was an apprentice mechanic. But because of the cancer causing materials in the pads. Urgently, then new compounds had to be developed. Nowadays brake pads are made from a mixture of different compounds. Including, metallic shavings or non-metallic, organic materials. Depending on the manufacturers own compound mixes.

The brake pads are compressed onto your brake discs when you press the brake pedal. The discs are fitted directly to the wheel hubs and the axle, on applying the brake pads friction is forced upon the disc causing the wheels to slow and then stop depending on the pressure applied to the pedal. The discs work in unison with the brake pads in order to stop your vehicle.

When will I need new brake pads or discs?

There are many different warning signs that your vehicle will give you before your brakes may reach the point of potential failure or extensive repair. The first thing to say is that you should always have your car regularly serviced, including your braking system. This will stop problems before they occur.

Here’s some other things that you should look out for.

Watch out for your brake warning light coming on when you are driving?

Check or have your garage check your brake fluid level?
Do you hear a grinding sound or a squealing sound when you apply the brake pedal?
Any feeling of a vibration or some sponginess in the brake pedal when it is pressed?
Does your vehicle steer or pull to one side when you apply your brakes?

All these symptoms are the most common signs that are a potential brake system hazard ! Problems and they should be looked at immediately. Of course, they have the potential to cause a lethal accident. Brakes are there to stop your car and they should not be treated lightly. In a word, if you have them inspected at regular intervals you will reduce the chances of future safety problems.

Brake servicing in Halifax UK-Tips about BRAKES SERVICING for better car safety

Post Updated 20th Dec 2013

Brake servicing in Halifax UK;Regular brakes servicing is very important

Brake servicing in Halifax UK

Brakes and tyres are the most important most important parts to look after on your car . We should have our brakes checked at regular intervals, either on the cars routine service schedule or a stand alone brake service.

The most common time we find for brake failure is on the MOT test. We find that when this happens the brakes are in pretty poor condition.Brake servicing in Halifax UK is imperative for our local motorists. Most motorists though ignore my advice, and do not know that they have a problem with their brakes until they hear the grinding of metal to metal as their pads wear out and touch the metal brake discs, making the all too familiar horrible grinding noise. Please remember to have your brakes checked at regular intervals, this saves a big bill later when one problem runs to another, and could become very expensive.

Another problem the motorist has is that there Car Brakes wear out very slowly. I am talking in particular about things like brake hoses and brake cylinder rubbers. Both these items are made of a rubber based material and eventually they will rot away by the brake fluid. This rotting away would be noticed by our mechanics when having a Brake servicing in Halifax UK, on a routine service or MOT test as the leaking of the fluid is easily detectable. This can be very dangerous when the hose goes, as your brake fluid will be lost and with it your inability to stop the car.

As said above, brakes including the “metal pipes” that carry the brake fluid round the brake system are not checked out, there is a possibility that they may leak causing brake failure.

BMW mini 2 having its brakes checked out, Brake servicing in Halifax UK alerted the owner of this particular car had to have new discs and pads all the way round, because of lack of servicing.

Luckily for us in the UK we have the MOT test on an annual basis and the test will pick up many faults, but it is a very wise motorist that has their Disc Brakes brakes serviced at regular intervals.

Motorists are wise to have a brakes service carried out after Winter time. Winter is the time that you will use the brakes twice as much as in Summer time, because of motoring in very bad conditions. Another reason to have a brakes service is if you live in a hilly area, obviously you will be using the brakes much more when going down steep hills and taking sharp bends, probably using the brakes twice as much as on regular flat roads such as in Linconshire.

“Unipart2 replacement parts for your brakes servicing

Your brake pads usually need changing when there is about 25% of the pads left on and callipers have a system of measurements to determine how thick they are and whether or not they may need changing. Autodata gives us the correct thickness the pads should be before being replaced.

We here at Pellonautocentre offer a free brake check or can carry out a Brake servicing in Halifax UK for £29.90. If any brake work is required we can offer our customers a courtesy car, or give them a lift and back .We can offer online booking for MOT TESTS

We only use “Unipart” or “main dealer” quality parts with a warranty that covers all the mainland UK.

SQUEAKING BRAKES- What can cause rattling and noisy brake sounds?

SQUEAKING BRAKES

Most motorists have suffered from Squeaking brakes but what is it??

Some cars develop the SQUEAKING BRAKES problem. Thus, during normal motoring. Therefore, sometimes this is will occur when new brake pads have recently been fitted.

Squeaking brakes

Excellent new discs on this BMW cured the Squeaking brakes problem

The first thing we do at Pellon Autocentre. Is to remove all the wheels for close inspection. If the brakes have not been serviced recently we inspect each set of brakes.Hence, to look for any problems with the wear of the pads or shoes. We then check the other parts.Naturally, for incorrect fitting or for any damage that may have taken place. Sometimes the customer has had cheap ones fitted. Thus, causing dust to clog up the pads and become noisy or squeaky.

If nothing visible can be found, we would install new pads, only using the pads that are recommended for that model of car and the highest quality. Indeed because of the Squeaking Brakes Pads problem in the first instance we would use the original equipment pads from the main dealers. We at Pellon are a Unipart Service Centre and so use Unipart brake parts, and although these parts are of the highest quality, there are occasions then it is necessary to use the original equipment parts for excellent customer service this usually solves the problem especially for problem pads such as premature wear or indeed Squeaking brakes.

SQUEAKING BRAKES

If the problem persists, we may have to look at fitting pads with a higher carbon content although this is most unusual. Another issue could be the brake shims that fit between the pads and the callipers. The squeaky brakes problem can be cured by removing the shims and clean them thoroughly before giving them a coating of brake grease and then refitting them to the car; this job should be done at regular services so as not to cause future problems.

This will cure a noise often caused by the Car Brakes pads vibrating against the calliper during braking; this is usually heard by the driver as a squeak

We at Pellon consider you brakes as critical; any work carried out on the brakes should only be performed by professionals. We often find that when Disc Brakes are done by the DIY motorists things like brake squeaks often occur.
