Recycling Car Batteries- Lead Acid batteries are 95% recycled an excellent record

Recycling Car Batteries

Recycling Car Batteries is the way forward

There is no doubt that one of most successful outcomes of the “green revolution” is the fact that we recycle almost all our old car batteries, this also includes truck batteries and other lead acid battery products.

Because of the nature of lead acid batteries. Hence, they come under the control of waste regulations. Therefore, this means that companies that sell and supply batteries. Thus, have to hold a “waste transfer note” and are regulated by the relevant authorities. As a result, I believe that this is standard practice across the developed World. We transport the old car batteries to our local Recycling Car Batteries Waste facility.

Recycling Car Batteries

For this reason, this is in Leeds (UK). They then transfer them in larger quantities hence, to the Recycling Car Batteries facility. Naturally to a  battery company such as Exide batteries. Who then, carry out the process. Thus, of turning the old batteries into brand new car batteries. All this is completed, in one continuous process.

The car batteries are first washed and purged of the old acid. They then completely crush the whole batteries and begin to separate all the broken parts, this includes the plastic casings and lead plates, all the time this is going along a conveyor belt to the next stage.

The parts are all separated and fall into relevant containers. Naturally, Is of mixed colours. Hence, the process is mixed with new black plastic. All the new batteries have black casings; this is why most Car Batteries Online are now a black The lead is also remixed with a quantity of new lead. Hence, to make the Recycling Car Batteries lead plates. And a new car battery is born from the Recycling Car Batteries that went in at the beginning of the process.

Recycling Car Batteries

This quest for re-cycling is a great success story for a greener product so much so that an American company has bought out on of Britains largest battery suppliers just to get its hands on the scrap batteries.

Sleepy Drivers-DO Not Drive If You Are SLEEPY ? pull over and have a snooze-Pellon Tyres

Sleepy Drivers

Sleepy Drivers

Dont drive whilst you are sleepy warns Pellon tyres

Many of my customers at Pellon tyres complain that they can not get enough sleep. All I see all day is people yawning. Some of my customers have actually fallen asleep in our reception,

Sleepy Drivers

This road sign should be universal?

when coming in to buy tyres. This leads me to a new report out that a study shows that drivers with a lack of sleep are causing a great danger. This is to other motorists and it is  due to this lack of sleep that is causing dangerous situations for themselves and other drivers. Especially on our very busy roads.

In the USA they have a “Drowsy Drivers Prevention Week”, which is held some time in November. This helps bring out awareness about the problem. Indeed a recent survey has found that nearly all drivers that were questioned have felt like having a sleep while behind the steering wheel. Some time or another causing a serious threat to other drivers.

take a power sleep

I can confess to be one of them. I often have to deliver tyres during the day and often feel drowsy. I pull over if I can and take in some fresh air or have a coffee, they even advise us to try take a power nap where possible.

Once again in America it was found that one in 8 serious road crashes. This involved a drivers that fell asleep at the wheel thus causing the accident and other drivers horrific injuries. Men were found to suffer from drowsiness more than women. Whilst the other dangerous group were the under 24 year olds, many admitted dropping off to sleep at the wheel and drifting across other lanes of the road.

We at Pellon tyres in Halifax West Yorkshire

Think that it is important to get at least 7 hours sleep. If you feel drowsy pull in where possible and try to take a power nap . Try do drink some coffee or tea to get some caffeine into your system, or indeed the special caffeine tablets you can get from a chemist. Avoid driving at night and when daytime driving take 2 hour breaks when on a long journey.

Sleepy Drivers; Finally take another driver to talk to if possible, this will help break the boredom and split up your journey thus reducing the risk of sleepiness and possibly an accident.

We at Pellon tyres hope this blog is helpful advice, keep checking your tyres and you can buy online at www.pellontyres.co.uk at internet prices.

Michelin Tyres Success Story- the great Success Story of the renowned French tyre company

Michelin Tyres Success Story

Michelin Tyres Success Story

Eric Roberts 24-7-2011.

Part 2; The great Michelin Tyres X radial car tyre was “born.”

The next significant milestone for Michelin was the introduction of carbon black in the rubber compound mixture, this not only gave them their black colour but changed the chemical

Michelin Tyres Success Story

Michelin Tyres Success Story; Michelin man sat in a Paris book shop window

The combination of the compound which resulted in the greater longevity in their life. This change happened in around 1917 and in 1919 came the introduction of parallel textile cords this would be known as the “comfort” tyre a few years later and was to become the first low pressure one. Later in 1935 yet other improvements were made, and the “Super-comfort” tyre was born. This procedure enabled tyres to work at even lower pressures for a more comfortable ride; these were the first of their kind in the world. These improvements were of great benefit to Michelin tyres, leading to their next great innovation.

The next great Michelin innovation was to become a World leader and set a standard for the rest of the tyre manufacturers to try and follow. Known to be the Michelin X tyre.

Michelin part owned the then ailing French carmaker Citroen and developed the tyre partly for the new Citroen 2CV. The Worlds first radial was born, the plies that ran from bead to bead were of a textile material, but the tread belt that ran radial around the tyre bead of steel. The French tyre maker could not believe what it had created. Indeed, cross plays the Michelin “X” gave better handling, better cornering, better braking. Michelins were giving double the mileage compared across-ply” tyre.   They gave a much lower fuel consumption and because of the flexible and resilient side walls gave much-improved comfort to the ride of the car, a truly “great invention”.

Michelin Tyres Success Story

Steel belted tyres were the World standard and was creating interest from European car makers. So much so that Lancia became the first car manufacturers to use the Michelin on their Aurelia model. The pattern was soon to be followed by Mercedes and on their 2CV models.

While this was all happening in Europe, the Americans were pursuing a different tyre strategy, but this is in part three. Arthur W Savage was the first man to invent and patent the radial, but when his patent ran out Michelin were the first to pick it up and develop into the “X”. His American contemporaries were not interested in the radial tyre, so the innovation went to Europe and Michelin.

Solar Energy Batteries- May Vie With U.S. Oil Boom as Energy Changer

Solar Energy Batteries

Solar Energy Batteries

The rapid development of rooftop solar and

Solar Energy Batteries storage technology

could be as trans formative to the economy and modern life as the U.S. oil and gas boom, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said. (Batteries May Vie With U.S.

Eric Roberts’ insight: Solar batteries

The USA Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz has come out with a statement that I have been talking about for a couple of years now. In this article, he says that the USA could start to be getting independent of the national energy providers if the growth in solar Renewable Energy and other renewable resources can keep growing at the present rate.

In my opinion, the public in America. Of course, and other continents such as here in the UK. Have really grasped the nettle as far as going it alone with solar energy. The solar panels in this picture are situated in a small town in West Yorkshire UK.

Starting producing energy from the Sun as early as February. The electricity that is produced by these solar panels is sent straight to the electricity grid. Through a reverse meter and the electric company pays the house owner for the electricity that is provided.

In America there is a growing trend to store the electricity. Hence, that is collected from the panels. Into banks of Solar Energy Batteries. This is also useful in rural and more isolated areas. Where the batteries can store the electricity. As a result, for use at night by the house owners.

The most effective type of Solar Energy Batteries to use is AGM batteries.

These AGM batteries will cost more in the first instance. But will give better service due to the ability to have much greater charge and discharge cycles. Than say a normal lead-acid Car Batteries.

There are many DIY videos available. Showing, householders how to set up a Solar Energy Batteries system. One of them is Trojan AGM Battery. Subsequently, these batteries are very suited for the use with solar energy. So, anyone thinking of doing this should look at the Trojan AGM product.

Like the USA energy secretary Ernest Moriz. I too wonder how long off are we before we are producing more electricity. Say than the national providers and what happens then?.

Electric Car Servicing-Buying An Electric ‘Compliance Car’? Think Hard About-

electric car servicing

There are now more than a dozen plug-in electric cars for sale in the U.S., but not all electric cars are created equal.

Eric Roberts’ insight:

Electric car Servicing

This is an interesting article about the difficulty that the American motorists could experience when wanting to repair or service their electric battery operated cars.

It tells of the state of California giving the car manufacturers a quota for a number of vehicles, that they are to supply as compared to normal gasoline engined ones.

The problem is that the amount of electric car servicing garages are in short supply, especially Toyota.

Fundamentally, the question on my mind is “whatever happened to the Right to Repair Laws” ! Naturally, that are in operation in the United States and in the European Union. Significantly, this states that service garages should be given the access to  technical details. Including all the cars that car manufacturers are making.

So, why can’t the regular garages service these cars? In fact recently, I paid an expert on electric cars to brief my staff about the impending influx of electric cars. Special equipment is required  ! Because these vehicle are extremely dangerous ! Of course due to the possibility of electric shocks.

Because of certain restrictions then it has always been a strong suspicion of mine.

So, that this work will be kept away from the independent garage sector. Resentfully, Electric Car Servicing will not be open to us. In many ways they cannot be blamed for wanting to protect all their investment and development. However, every other product that has ever been produced. So, would have had to start out somewhere!

Accepting this is difficult for me and  this won’t stick with me. Consequently, we should all have a share in this market as we do today. I hope the EU are looking at this, so that they can legislate against the car makers protectionism ! Giving us all a in the garage business a fair deal. Thus allowing us to carry out Electric Car Servicing, alongside petrol engine car servicing.

Importantly, we can service the “Hybrid cars” and indeed do so.

Thomas Edison-An Early nickel-iron Battery was invented by no other than Thomas Edison

Early nickel-iron Batteries from Thomas Edison

Surprisingly, it was only recently when I was doing an article about something else. So that I came across an interesting fact. About the American inventor, no other than Thomas Edison. So, why I should  I have been surprised I did not know ! Because he invented some mind bending things . Of course, that we still use today. Thomas Edison Invention Light Bulb and the communications breakthrough of the first ever phonograph (a type of early record player).batteries, thomas edison

Thomas Edison was working on improvements to another invention. His  telegraph transmitter and he noticed that the tape of the telegraph machine. Could give him human type voices when he ran it at a fast speed.

This set his highly intelligent mind at play which resulted in the genius trying a stylus onto a tin foil cylinder and it played back the tune “Mary had a little lamb”. This discovery was to end up as the first machine to record sound and play it back, in other  words the World’s first type of record player, Batteries UK (although he used cylinders not discs). This made him famous all over the World and the devise was known as the “Phonograph”.

New battery invention !

The part of Thomas Edison Timeline . Of course, that interests me . So is the new type of storage battery that he invented. His invention could have been started off when he noticed that it was a struggle to start the engines in the cars of that period only using a cranking handle. I can remember when I was an apprentice mechanic in the late sixties; when a 12 Volt Battery went flat for some reason we had to use a cranking handle to try start the engine and it was very hard indeed.

More reading…http://inventors.about.com/cs/inventorsalphabet/a/electric_2.htm

New life for the nickel-iron batteries ;from Stanford University.

Thomas Edison came up with a new type of battery known as the nickel-iron battery and car ownership was open to everyone who could afford a car and not just the strong people who could crank an engine to start by using only muscle power. To bring you to my main point the old Edison invention may now be brought up to date by staff at Stanford University.

The nickel-iron batteries that are used today will be used mainly for storing the Suns energy from the use of wind turbines and solar panels. These modern type batteries have a much greater charging speed, but the scientists and students still, need to work on improvements to time that the batteries can actually store the electricity that is produced. In fact the batteries can be fully charged up in only a couple of minutes and it only takes ½ a minute to discharge its load.

There is still a great deal of work to be done. But this updated type of battery will be expected to be competition. Especially, to the Lithium-Ion batteries presently used on electric car production. The new version of the nickel-iron batteries. Could even be used to accelerate the charge rate to the lithium-ion battery. So, giving it a power boost to generate faster acceleration and regenerative braking.

Goodyear Vectra 4 Seasons-Winter tyres time is here again check out these Goodyears

Goodyear Vectra

Goodyear Vectra 4 Seasons Winter tyres fitted to Jeep Patriot This time of year we are starting to fit Winter tyres. In the month leading to winter, October/November is the time leading up to much colder weather here in the North of the UK. The days are getting shorter and the nights longer and colder.

Jeep Patriot having 4 new Goodyear Vectra 4 seasons tyres fitted

In the past three years. We have had worse weather than normal. With very heavy snow falls. Not as bad as some countries but enough to warrant drivers fitting winter and all season tyres to their cars. The trend in the past few years has been to fit winter tyres. Especially in the hillier district of Northern England. Our Scottish friends have been fitting Goodyear winter tyres for many years now, because they can be virtually certain of having some snow falls all throughout the winter months.

Here in England we have had a run of mild wet winters, I can even remember one year when roses were blooming at Christmas time. But for the time being we have been having much colder winters similar to Continental Europe when the wind has come from the East, from a very cold Russia. On the Saturday morning we had a particularly busy day fitting winter tyres to most cars that came in to my depot in Halifax UK. We also fitted a few different brands, which is always nice to see. Not all our customers go for cheap budget tyres, and some drivers prefer the leading brands.Winter Tyres Important

Saturday was a Pirelli  sales day, everything we sold seemed to be these two brands. One car that caught my eye was a Jeep Patriot, who was having an oil and filter change and four tyres fitted. The tyres were 215/60R17 Goodyear Vectra 4 seasons. These tyres are in fact what it says on the tin, they are not full blown winter tyres but are developed by Goodyear tyres as all the year round tyres.

Goodyear Vectra Winter Tyres-4 Seasons had a good write up from top German Car magazine Auto-Bild

This tyre has had good revues from the German Motor magazine Auto Bild they said that…”    “Top class all season tire. Well balanced and safe on snow, short braking distances on wet, high safety reserves on aquaplaning. Quiet and comfortable, low rolling resistance.” …http://www.autobild.de/

Checking the oil level after oil and filter change

The oil was changed and the tyres were fitted and the customer with the Jeep went on his way.

Car batteries Care-Caring for your batteries during the winter months

Car batteries Care

Car batteries Care during the winter months

The Rome Observer

(METRO) — Few things can be more frustrating than jumping into the driver’s seat on a frosty morning, turning the key in the ignition and failing to hear the engine roar to life.

Car batteries Care-Why do your Car Batteries fail in the Winter?

As silly as it may seem many drivers hardly use their cars. Hence, in the winter months. Indeed some drivers lock the cars away in the garage, (if they have one).

car batteries

This is where most scrap car batteries end up? but 95% of them are recycled a great achievement?

Nothing can be more stressful. As a result trying to start your car on a cold winters morning. Therefore, only to find that your car wont start. Of course, it is one of the saddest sounds that you as a driver will hear. When the battery just makes a slow grinding noise. Hence, made by the starter motor. As it tries to start up your car. Normally the engine just zips up. Hence, at the turn of the key and off you go. So but not this morning, it’s frosty and -2 C or bellow. Therefore, the car will not start up.

This is the scenario .That thousands of motorists a day will experience. Of course, a bit of knowledge goes a long way. Setting out a few facts can help the motorist understand. Consequently, a little more about their 12 Volt Battery car batteries. Including, how they respond to the climate. The two extremes of weather conditions, the cold and the heat will affect your car batteries performance.

Here in the UK we rarely experience excess heat, so I will concentrate on the cold.

In cold weather the chemical action in the battery will be slowed down and I have actually seen the battery liquid (sulphuric acid) frozen solid.

Car batteries Care-The corrosion on this battery must be removed

off keeping your car in a garage if possible, either in really cold weather or overnight. What happens is that although it may be cold in the garage, the heat from the engine when the car was run the day before, will act as a heater for the battery as the engine compartment will still retain the heat.

If the battery is over five years old then it should be replaced with a new battery, most car batteries will fail after the five year period, and this is what we have found over the years, also imported cars from the Far Eastern countries such as Japan, China and South Korea are imported with batteries that are lower specifications that the ones made for the European market, these batteries do not stand up to the cold weather and usually fail early on in the cars life.

The best thing that drivers can do is to have their car battery checked before the onset of winter and replace It if necessary, but in really severe cold as experienced in the USA recently, then the battery could still fail without further protection from the cold.

Car batteries Care-A few things to look out for when buying your new battery.

Make sure that it is the correct battery for the car and has the same power, the same number of amps and cold cranking amps. It will be all right to go bigger if it will fit the cars battery compartment as long as the battery has the same voltage, usually 12volts and 6volts on classic cars and vintage cars.

Here are a few more tips if the weather forecast is for really cold conditions. You can use a battery blanket, to cover the battery and stop it freezing. You could also use a trickle charger, because the battery will retain some heat as the battery is been charged up, and stop it from freezing. If your car is stored in the garage for a period of time then disconnect the battery and try to keep it on a trickle charger when the battery is in storage, you can buy cheap intelligent chargers now that will do this job.

Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles-Toyota to launch in US next year 2015- domain-B

Toyota to launch hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles in US next year domain-B Hydrogen-powered electric cars are moving in at a brisk pace as fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) that use hydrogen as fuel for their batteries will be in use in Northern America by 2015…

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

Toyota The new Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles will be able to get their electricity from an electrochemical between oxygen and hydrogen which will generate a current cars could be available earlier than thought.

The first British hydrogen filling station. Hence, for public to use ! Has now been opened in Swindon Wiltshire. Consequently, it is located at the giant Honda factory near South Marston. The new site will be open to the public. Although it is within the grounds of the Honda car factory.

This is the very first step. On the road towards attracting Hydrogen fuel-cell cars to the UK. So, the single pump will be able to fill The new Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. They will be able to get their electricity from an electrochemical between oxygen and hydrogen. Which will generate a current cars with a gas based hydrogen. Although any members of the public will have to pass a BOC safety course . Of course, before been able to fill their hydrogen cars.

The new Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles will be able to get their electricity from an electrochemical between oxygen and hydrogen which will generate a current. The only wastes that are omitted are water vapour and heat making the cars extremely environmental friendly.

The new cars from Toyota are expected to be in use in the USA by as near as 2015.

This is much earlier than thought before. In my opinion this technology will be a winner. Eventually the motorist will be able to travel just as far as a conventional gasoline cars. Without having to have the time consuming inconvenience. So, of having to charge up the battery for the return journey. That’s of course unless the present battery technology is not significantly modified.

Other car makers have also shown more than interest. The new Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles will be able to get their electricity from an electrochemical between oxygen and hydrogen which will generate a current. The new Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles will be able to get their electricity from an electrochemical between oxygen and hydrogen which will generate a current powered car.  Honda of course and Hyundai as well as Toyota, who’s hydrogen cars are expectedThe new Hydrogen fuel-cells to be able to a range of about 300 miles from a full tank and the fuel will only take three or four minutes to fill the tank.

The USA are at the forefront of supplying fuel.

The new Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles will be able to get their electricity. So, from an electrochemical between oxygen and hydrogen. Significantly, this will generate a string of filling stations. Naturally, with 68 stations stretching from San Diego to San Francisco, with a further 20 new filling stations to be built by 2015.

The new Toyota car is expected to be called the FV2. So, and will be made including all the latest IT technology. Making the car a real stunner. Another Toyota model will be known as the i-road . Which will be a three wheeler city car ! Of course, this car is well advanced and will be having trials in several cities. From Japan to France this year (2014)

Hankook Tyres  .Are based in South Korea and was founded in 1941 but then it was known as the Chosun tyre company. The company name that we know today as Hankook tyre was introduced in 1968.

The Hankook tyres company now sells its tyre products to many of the Worlds car manufacturers and is catching up with the leading tyre companies because of the quality of its tyre products and the quality of its tyres that are now known Worldwide. Hankook tyres are now the 7th largest tyre company in the World, and are now one of the fastest growing tyre companies.

One of the reasons has been the involvement in the field of motorsports, offering its tyre products for many motorsport racing events. Hankook  are proud to produce products high-quality and performance vehicles and not just for passenger cars but also for 4×4 vehicles and SUVs as well as for trucks. Some of the car makers that Hankook  supply are the massive car manufacturers such as Toyota, Ford and General Motors. This means that when a tyre company supply them for the original equipment cars, then they can look forward to a fair size chunk of the replacement tyre market in a couple of years when the first ones need replacing.

This is one of the reasons why Hankook  have set up distribution centres in many of the tyre market countries in the World including here in the UK. They have also built new manufacturing plants in China and the USA (Tennessee), they are shortly going to open a new $1 billion tyre manufacturing plant in Indonesia (West Java) to help cope with the huge estimated demand for its tyre products.
