Bald Tyre Problems-More defective TYRES causing accidents

Bald Tyre Problems

Bald Tyre Problems; illegal tyres causing more crashes

For my sins. I decided to join an online social business site called Linkedin. Of course, I am now glad that I did. Hence, we get some good feedback from the groups that I am in. One group that I joined

Bald Tyre Problem

Bald Tyre Problem; This bald tyre was on a TAXI?

is a tyre-related group. Therefore, I get some interesting things relating to the Bald Tyre Problems. Thus, that are involved in auto accidents. This guy is in America. naturally, the same things relate to us here in the UK.

He says that many of the accidents. Therefore, he has brought in for investigation are tyre related. We often see crashes on our Motorways. Consequently, never get to see what has caused them. In his case.He sees the cars when he tows them to his garage. So for the police and investigators to check the cars out. He can see that the cars have clear  defects that were more than likely the cause of the crash.

Many accidents are caused by illegal tyres, when-when they are  getting near to the end of their  life, it will pick up more sharp objects as they would with a decent amount of tread on, most wheels that come to us for punctures are almost bald, there is no resistance to objects when the  tread is so low. Continental tyres have started to stop their sipes (that is small slits in the tread that dissipate the water) at 3 mm that’s double the legal limit here in the UK. This has meant that to be completely safe you should replace Continentals and other similar top brands at 3mm to be safe.

 Bald Tyre Problems

One of the main reasons that motorists are taking more risks with their tyres and road safety is because of the recession, people are avoiding buying new tyres and risking their lives

tyres

Tyres like these that were just removed from a Mercedes SUV can end up in the second-hand tyre market, we damage the sidewalls to stop this happening.

(and others)

There has been a record amount of convictions for tyre-related incidents (illegal tyres), with over 10,000 convictions in 2010 (I do not have the 2011 figures yet). But they will probably worse.

Many tyres are failed in MOT tests but tyres on the MOT test are a “grey area” and many testers are put on an “advisory”. This means that the customer is just warned that he needs to change some tyres, but they never seem to get changed until months later.

Illegal tyres carry a maximum fine of £2500 and 3 penalty points for each one

The UK tyre law states that. A car driven on the road. Must have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre.Hence, around its entire circumference. Surely even purchasing cheap tyres. It would be better than driving on illegal tyres. Hence, and facing such a large fine?

Your tyres also need to be checked for damage. Splits, cuts or cracks in the side wall can be very dangerous and cause serious problems. Blow-outs can be caused be any of these, however, the most common reason for a tyre to blow is the lack of the correct tyre pressure. When a tyre is underinflated it will bounce along the road, especially when the vehicle is travelling at speed or overloaded. Low pressure causes the tyre become overheated especially at high speed say on a motorway. Hence, when the tyre reaches a high temperature it may explode. In rare circumstances. Then it could even burst into flames. So the moral of all this is to have your tyres checked at regular intervals and don’t leave it too late.

Online Battery Sales-Vintage truck find on “Leisure Batteries” Delivery run

Online Battery Sales

Online Battery Sales; Surprise vintage car and truck photos taken while delivering some leisure batteries in Bordon.

This time, of the year.Hence, is very busy due to the amount of  leisure batteries that we sell in Online Battery Sales. So as soon as the caravan season starts in March. Then, we are inundated with orders for leisure batteries. Thus,  from all over the country.

We also sell many golf batteries and UPS batteries. As a result,  delivered  by couriers. This time of year. We have customers. That will buy more than one battery some buy up to three or four. Last

Online Battery Sales

Second vintage truck in the same garage when delivering some leisure batteries.

the week we sold twenty to thirty batteries in an area of Southern England. So I decided to do the delivery myself. Because these leisure batteries are very heavy weighing 23 kilos each.Sometimes get broken by the couriers if there is more than one.

I loaded the Online Battery Sales. Of course, with my sat-nav. I set off South at 4.30 am the next morning. Hence, the first six deliveries went well. But I got stuck on the seventh. The customer had bought two 100 amp Lucas leisure batteries. I went up and down the road in a town called Bordon, but could not find the address for the delivery of the batteries. I looked up and down the road, asked people in the local, but to no avail. Finally, I noticed a large house at the side of the road and decided to call in and ask. This was going to my final attempt, if I couldn’t find it now I would return back to Yorkshire and send it by courier, but I hate to give in.

 Online Battery Sales

I called in at the house and found that the back garden opened up into a huge parking area, with some tipper trucks parked up. The company were called Williams of Bordon Ltd, I got out of my van and poked my nose into a large garage (looking for a person) where they repaired their trucks and to my surprise saw some wonderful vintage trucks parked up in a line. A gentleman came out of an office building and I explained my position to him,(I also ran out of credits on my antiquated mobile phone). The people were very kind and helpful and the lady in the office rang my customer for the directions and

a very kind guy then showed me where the customer who wanted the Online Battery Sales, leisure batteries lived (I was only 200 yards away). They also allowed me to take a few pictures of their vintage car and trucks, that I have put on this blog.

I would like to thank the very kind people for their help it was most refreshing to see them helping a total stranger.

Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres-A tyre for the sporting car and driving enthusiast

Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres

Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres; launch a new bread of “sports TYRES”

Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres

Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres; Dunlop tyres vintage sign

This new tyre from Dunlop tyres has been specially designed. Hence, for the “driving enthusiast”. Dunlop has had a long heritage and standing in the field of motor sports. This new tyre is no exception. The new tyre. Naturally, has been developed to give much-improved road holding. Especially, for the driver who likes to live close to the edge. Therefore, with much-improved road holding due to the addition of racing technology.Plus, 120 years of racing experience built into the new Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres

This tyre gives much-improved grip. As a result, in both wet and dry road surfaces. This is due to the increased contact area of the road. Because of the tyres huge outer shoulder block area. The new Dunlop Sports Maxx Tyres. Also, boasts two large centre grooves. So, that enable the tyres to dissipate water quickly. Thus, and resist aquaplaning. Keeping the tyre firmly in touch with the road surface in very wet weather. The water is pushed away from the centre grooves via through a set of lateral grooves and away from the tyre.

This new tyre is clearly aimed at the “Ultra High Performance” (UHP) tyre market. The new tyre will be available in 17 and 18-inch tyre sizes and will cater for high-performance car brands such as Audi, Mercedes, Porsche, BMW and Maserati’s. Early Radial Car Tyres-Which were the First Radial Car Tyres in the 1960’s

 Post Updated 26th Dec 2013

Early Radial Car Tyres;  car tyres my  beginnings and the tyre law

My very first job in the auto trade was as an apprentice mechanic in a small Yorkshire garage. I only spent four years there and after having an argument with my

Early Radial Car Tyres

Early Radial Car Tyres; The Goodyear G800 will be one of the early tyres remembered by my older readers, but, unfortunately, the tyre was very noisy because of the block tread pattern and did not give very good mileage.

boss we decided to part companies. The best thing to come out of my old job was the fact that I became interested in tyres. Very strange you may think but that’s the truth. I had to repair all the punctured tyres and fit new tyres using a tyre lever, a very difficult thing to do until I got the knack of it.

Most punctures in those days were to tyre inner tubes. Most Early Radial Car Tyres in those days were fitted with tubes and tyres were used right up to the tyre becoming completely bald and beyond. There were no tyre laws in my early days this would come later on in my career.

I was now at home under my mother’s feet looking for, a new job. To my surprise, a vacancy for a tyre fitter appeared in the local paper. My mother rushed me off to the tyre centre within minutes of the advertisement appearing. The then manager a guy called Brian Pitchforth interviewed me and was very impressed that I could take off car wheels and fit and repair tyres by hand using tyre levers.

I received a polite letter saying that I had got the job. My mother was more pleased than me because I would be no longer under her feet and she would have my board money coming in again. I started work the week after and soon got settled into the job. I truly loved my new job and settled into my new role as tyre fitter.

This was to be the begging of my lifetime love for the tyre industry and was to set me up to run my own business in years to come.

The company was called The Tyre House, a local company soon to be bought out by the ever-expanding Dunlop retail outlet called Brigg’ s Tyres. Briggs were a group of tyre companies and were soon to merge with another group called Marsham Tyres, this was later to become National Tyres a wholly owned company of Dunlop Tyres.

In those days, the major tyre manufacturers were hell bent on buying out any tyre distributor to consolidate their share of the tyre market. This was due to the

ever increasing market place as cars were becoming affordable to more and more people as jobs became more plentiful. Therefore more people needed Early Radial Car Tyres,

The first radial tyres came out and I was promoted to office manager

for my enthusiasm and it was beginning to get easier promotions in a large company such as Dunlop. I eventually left National Tyres and moved to Goodyear Wolverhampton and a  Goodyear owned company in Leeds to try my hand with giant earth mover tyres, but will never forget the friends I met some of whom were friends for life and my first job in the tyre industry.

Contact 5 CONTINENTAL TYRES-Sees the introduction of anew premium tyre.

Post Updated 23rd Dec 2013

End of March sees the launch of the Continental tyres Premium Contact 5contact 5,Continental tyres ready for Daytona races

The press from all the leading motoring journals met In  Barcelona for the launch of the New premium Contact 5 tyres. This new tyre is designed for all types of cars from small

Continental have and will always be one the Worlds front tyre companies, in tyre development the new Contisport 5 is no exception to this rule.

family saloons to the luxury end of the market.

Continental tyres are constantly improving their products, along with the other leading tyre manufacturers. This is to keep in step with the ever changing designs created by modern car makers, especially in Germany and Japan. The new premium Contact 5 is a few steps further on in development from the sports Contact 5. The new premium Contact 5 boasts much better braking distances in both wet and dry road conditions and has the same rolling resistance as the eco contact 5,making these tyres a whole lot better than there predecessors’.

The new tyres come with a few added benefits to add to better contact with the road during braking. They have what they call a 3D edge. The new design also includes a new type of shoulder zone, which reduces energy loss along the shoulder zone. All these extra features give the new tyres a lower fuel consumption, helping the motorist to reduce their fuel costs, it is expected that this could be as much as 12%, a good saving.

Continental tyres have also designed a more flexible side-wall to give increased comfort for the car drivers and with the addition of whisper bars the tyre is much quieter compared with the other tyres in Continentals extensive range.

Once again I must praise Continental for another wonderful tyre product, another step thanks keeps them in number one spot as the Worlds finest tyre maker. Please click the link a learn more on Continental tyres web site...www.continental-tyres.co.uk/passenger

Marine Batteries-delivered to customers moored on boats in Hull Marina and Norfolk

Marine Batteries

Marine Batteries; lovely Summers day to deliver boat batteries to a boat

This spring has been one of the sunniest on record.Especially, here in the UK. Hence, we in West Yorkshire have seen wall to wall sunshine for the past three weeks.

marine batteries

The image shows, a bank of Marine Batteries that are to be found in the boat power supply.

We took a phone call.of course, from a guy who owned a sailing boat. Which is moored in the Marina in Hull, East Yorkshire. He wanted to buy some AGM marine batteries for his ship. As expected, he needed them urgently. because he was about to sail the next day. Thus, had to catch the first tide out to sea,(all strange stuff to a land lover like me).

I rang him back with the price of the batteries,

Hull Marina in the height of Summer is a beautiful place to visit and is one of the Hull Attractions. I think that sometimes I am very lucky to visit such wonderful places when I am out and about delivering batteries to our online customers.

He haggled a bit, but we agreed on a price and off I went that afternoon down the M62 motorway to Hull. The day was a beautiful sunny day and a pleasure to be out and about. I arrived in Hull and parked up at the Marina hotel car park, met the guy with the boat. We exchanged his money for the Marine Batteries, and off he went a happy man with his Marine Batteries, to sail away into the sunset “as the song goes”

Marine Batteries

I had a walk around the marina a took a couple of pictures for my blog, a great day was had, and we ended up with a happy customer. We have also started delivering our 12 Volt Battery (AGM marine batteries) to Norfolk where there are many boat owners. Some of the rivers are enormous, and the ships can sail well inland. I must admit though that this also gives us a problem in finding the remote areas where the boat owners live; we get there in the end.

Dual Mass Flywheels- a pain in the neck ? Riginally to smooth out diesel engined cars heavy clutches

Dual Mass Flywheels

Dual Mass Flywheels-A recent DMF that we have fitted

difficult kinds of jobs.

One of the main problems we are finding at the moment is the number of cars that are having clutch problems. This is no real problem to us and we take it in our stride, but the most frightening thing that is becoming prevalent is the increasing number of cars that are requiring Dual Mass Flywheels.

What are dual mass flywheels

In the old days we had a simple clutch plate mechanism that would cost perhaps £200 to £300 to repair, from a small to a large car, now thanks to modern technology we have clutch and flywheels that are part of the same unit. The problem is that you can diagnose a faulty clutch but not a DMF Problems (dual mass flywheel). This seems to affect all makes of vehicles we have fitted them on VWs and Toyota’s this week alone, also on Mercedes.

The idea came out to accommodate the modern demands of the lightweight diesel engines, modern motorists demand their diesel engine runs just as smooth as a petrol engine, also giving better fuel consumption. The DMF acts like a damper between the engine and the gearbox to give a smoother ride when changing gears on a manual transmission system.

Basically, there are two types of DMF. One is made up of a primary and secondary flywheel containing springs and cushions. There is a ring between the outer and the inner flywheel that allows them to slip, this is to stop any damage to the transmission when any torque loads exceed the pressure of the vehicles rating of the transmission.

Dual Mass Flywheels

Of course, the ring is the weak spot and can wear out when too much continual engine loads are applied. We find that this could be the reason that problems seem to occur mostly in people carriers.

Of course, the second type has planetary gearing. Specially made for vehicles with low-revving engines. Hence, that give out stronger vibrations when doing low revs. This type should give much smoother gear changes on diesel engines, similar to the same performance as a petrol engine, also giving a better fuel consumption.

I hope that this is informative and that you don’t need one replacing, but if you do look forward to a big garage bill DMF Failure.

Recycling Car Batteries- Lead Acid batteries are 95% recycled an excellent record

Recycling Car Batteries

Recycling Car Batteries is the way forward

There is no doubt that one of most successful outcomes of the “green revolution” is the fact that we recycle almost all our old car batteries, this also includes truck batteries and other lead acid battery products.

Because of the nature of lead acid batteries. Hence, they come under the control of waste regulations. Therefore, this means that companies that sell and supply batteries. Thus, have to hold a “waste transfer note” and are regulated by the relevant authorities. As a result, I believe that this is standard practice across the developed World. We transport the old car batteries to our local Recycling Car Batteries Waste facility.

Recycling Car Batteries

For this reason, this is in Leeds (UK). They then transfer them in larger quantities hence, to the Recycling Car Batteries facility. Naturally to a  battery company such as Exide batteries. Who then, carry out the process. Thus, of turning the old batteries into brand new car batteries. All this is completed, in one continuous process.

The car batteries are first washed and purged of the old acid. They then completely crush the whole batteries and begin to separate all the broken parts, this includes the plastic casings and lead plates, all the time this is going along a conveyor belt to the next stage.

The parts are all separated and fall into relevant containers. Naturally, Is of mixed colours. Hence, the process is mixed with new black plastic. All the new batteries have black casings; this is why most Car Batteries Online are now a black The lead is also remixed with a quantity of new lead. Hence, to make the Recycling Car Batteries lead plates. And a new car battery is born from the Recycling Car Batteries that went in at the beginning of the process.

Recycling Car Batteries

This quest for re-cycling is a great success story for a greener product so much so that an American company has bought out on of Britains largest battery suppliers just to get its hands on the scrap batteries.

Sleepy Drivers-DO Not Drive If You Are SLEEPY ? pull over and have a snooze-Pellon Tyres

Sleepy Drivers

Sleepy Drivers

Dont drive whilst you are sleepy warns Pellon tyres

Many of my customers at Pellon tyres complain that they can not get enough sleep. All I see all day is people yawning. Some of my customers have actually fallen asleep in our reception,

Sleepy Drivers

This road sign should be universal?

when coming in to buy tyres. This leads me to a new report out that a study shows that drivers with a lack of sleep are causing a great danger. This is to other motorists and it is  due to this lack of sleep that is causing dangerous situations for themselves and other drivers. Especially on our very busy roads.

In the USA they have a “Drowsy Drivers Prevention Week”, which is held some time in November. This helps bring out awareness about the problem. Indeed a recent survey has found that nearly all drivers that were questioned have felt like having a sleep while behind the steering wheel. Some time or another causing a serious threat to other drivers.

take a power sleep

I can confess to be one of them. I often have to deliver tyres during the day and often feel drowsy. I pull over if I can and take in some fresh air or have a coffee, they even advise us to try take a power nap where possible.

Once again in America it was found that one in 8 serious road crashes. This involved a drivers that fell asleep at the wheel thus causing the accident and other drivers horrific injuries. Men were found to suffer from drowsiness more than women. Whilst the other dangerous group were the under 24 year olds, many admitted dropping off to sleep at the wheel and drifting across other lanes of the road.

We at Pellon tyres in Halifax West Yorkshire

Think that it is important to get at least 7 hours sleep. If you feel drowsy pull in where possible and try to take a power nap . Try do drink some coffee or tea to get some caffeine into your system, or indeed the special caffeine tablets you can get from a chemist. Avoid driving at night and when daytime driving take 2 hour breaks when on a long journey.

Sleepy Drivers; Finally take another driver to talk to if possible, this will help break the boredom and split up your journey thus reducing the risk of sleepiness and possibly an accident.

We at Pellon tyres hope this blog is helpful advice, keep checking your tyres and you can buy online at www.pellontyres.co.uk at internet prices.

Michelin Tyres Success Story- the great Success Story of the renowned French tyre company

Michelin Tyres Success Story

Michelin Tyres Success Story

Eric Roberts 24-7-2011.

Part 2; The great Michelin Tyres X radial car tyre was “born.”

The next significant milestone for Michelin was the introduction of carbon black in the rubber compound mixture, this not only gave them their black colour but changed the chemical

Michelin Tyres Success Story

Michelin Tyres Success Story; Michelin man sat in a Paris book shop window

The combination of the compound which resulted in the greater longevity in their life. This change happened in around 1917 and in 1919 came the introduction of parallel textile cords this would be known as the “comfort” tyre a few years later and was to become the first low pressure one. Later in 1935 yet other improvements were made, and the “Super-comfort” tyre was born. This procedure enabled tyres to work at even lower pressures for a more comfortable ride; these were the first of their kind in the world. These improvements were of great benefit to Michelin tyres, leading to their next great innovation.

The next great Michelin innovation was to become a World leader and set a standard for the rest of the tyre manufacturers to try and follow. Known to be the Michelin X tyre.

Michelin part owned the then ailing French carmaker Citroen and developed the tyre partly for the new Citroen 2CV. The Worlds first radial was born, the plies that ran from bead to bead were of a textile material, but the tread belt that ran radial around the tyre bead of steel. The French tyre maker could not believe what it had created. Indeed, cross plays the Michelin “X” gave better handling, better cornering, better braking. Michelins were giving double the mileage compared across-ply” tyre.   They gave a much lower fuel consumption and because of the flexible and resilient side walls gave much-improved comfort to the ride of the car, a truly “great invention”.

Michelin Tyres Success Story

Steel belted tyres were the World standard and was creating interest from European car makers. So much so that Lancia became the first car manufacturers to use the Michelin on their Aurelia model. The pattern was soon to be followed by Mercedes and on their 2CV models.

While this was all happening in Europe, the Americans were pursuing a different tyre strategy, but this is in part three. Arthur W Savage was the first man to invent and patent the radial, but when his patent ran out Michelin were the first to pick it up and develop into the “X”. His American contemporaries were not interested in the radial tyre, so the innovation went to Europe and Michelin.
