Sleepy Drivers-DO Not Drive If You Are SLEEPY ? pull over and have a snooze-Pellon Tyres

Sleepy Drivers

Sleepy Drivers

Dont drive whilst you are sleepy warns Pellon tyres

Many of my customers at Pellon tyres complain that they can not get enough sleep. All I see all day is people yawning. Some of my customers have actually fallen asleep in our reception,

Sleepy Drivers

This road sign should be universal?

when coming in to buy tyres. This leads me to a new report out that a study shows that drivers with a lack of sleep are causing a great danger. This is to other motorists and it is  due to this lack of sleep that is causing dangerous situations for themselves and other drivers. Especially on our very busy roads.

In the USA they have a “Drowsy Drivers Prevention Week”, which is held some time in November. This helps bring out awareness about the problem. Indeed a recent survey has found that nearly all drivers that were questioned have felt like having a sleep while behind the steering wheel. Some time or another causing a serious threat to other drivers.

take a power sleep

I can confess to be one of them. I often have to deliver tyres during the day and often feel drowsy. I pull over if I can and take in some fresh air or have a coffee, they even advise us to try take a power nap where possible.

Once again in America it was found that one in 8 serious road crashes. This involved a drivers that fell asleep at the wheel thus causing the accident and other drivers horrific injuries. Men were found to suffer from drowsiness more than women. Whilst the other dangerous group were the under 24 year olds, many admitted dropping off to sleep at the wheel and drifting across other lanes of the road.

We at Pellon tyres in Halifax West Yorkshire

Think that it is important to get at least 7 hours sleep. If you feel drowsy pull in where possible and try to take a power nap . Try do drink some coffee or tea to get some caffeine into your system, or indeed the special caffeine tablets you can get from a chemist. Avoid driving at night and when daytime driving take 2 hour breaks when on a long journey.

Sleepy Drivers; Finally take another driver to talk to if possible, this will help break the boredom and split up your journey thus reducing the risk of sleepiness and possibly an accident.

We at Pellon tyres hope this blog is helpful advice, keep checking your tyres and you can buy online at www.pellontyres.co.uk at internet prices.

Hi I would like to introduce myself. I have worked in the Garage and tyre and I am MD for online battery company www.batteriesontheweb.co.uk. I have worked for a couple for national tyre companies in my younger days, before starting my first business. I now own a garage and MOT testing centre, here in the UK called Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre, and I am a keen blogger about anything to do with cars and their related products that will help my business. We are members of Point-S and Motor-Codes and are also a Unipart Car Care Centre and of course Tyre-safe.

560×13 X-ply tyres-Vintage cross ply tyres fitted to these great looking MG cars

Old cars fitted with 560×13 x-ply tyres (takes me back)

560×13 X-ply tyres; On a recent trip to France, I came across some fantastic vintage cars and thought that they would be perfect for one of my blogs.

560x13 X-ply tyres

MG fitted with 560×13 X-ply tyres

The cars were fitted with 560×13 X-ply tyres and reminded me of the time when I was an apprentice mechanic. My first employment as a young mechanic was in a small industrial town in West Yorkshire called Batley. Batley in those days was a very busy mill town and was the home to some famous companies. The best-known company still trades in Batley and is called Fox,s biscuits.

The garage that I worked for was called Phillips Brothers, a small British Leyland garage that repaired most British cars such as MG, and other Leyland marques. As the new lad, I had to fix punctures and fit new tyres; this included the very popular 560×13 X-ply tyres. The tyre service in those days was pretty necessary. Indeed we had to use tyre levers as tyre machines were not available then.

The most standard tyres in those days were 560×13 X-ply tyres

and most were fitted to early M Gs and early Minis . Minis were on 520×10 tyres and then moved onto radial tyres. Foxs biscuits family lived nearby and were one of our best clients, they always bought the latest models out, but would often keep special cars, such as the MG s spotted on my travels which were MG TA and TB. These cars have now become classic vintage sports cars. They were first released in 1936, with a top speed of 78mph and 0-60 in 23 seconds, they could do 28 mile to the gallon and only 3000 were made. In 1939 the TB came out with a new 1250cc engine giving 54 brake horse power, but this model was affected by the breakout of war, leaving only 379 models made. Eric Roberts

4×4 SUV Tyres-Which Ones to Choose depending on where you drive?

4×4 drivers are getting far better at choosing the correct 4×4 SUV Tyres for their vehicles.

With the addition of SUV drivers, the market has become much more challenging on deciding which 4×4 SUV Tyres to buy and which time of year to change. This time of year we are approaching Winter time, and it would be advisable to buy 4×4 SUV Tyres with a stronger tread pattern to help cope with the weather ahead. Choosing the correct 4×4 SUV Tyres can be difficult. Different makers

4x4 SUV Tyres

Modern SUV vehicles like this one now fit 4×4 type winter tyres

make their tyre compounds using their technologies and materials and so each brand of tyres may differ.

When choosing the correct 4×4 SUV Tyres for the proper season, it would help if you consult a local tyre dealer.

Such a trader is Pellon tyres in Halifax West Yorkshire. If you have enough tyre knowledge, you may be confident in choosing your tyres. To help customers select the correct 4×4 SUV Tyres. Therefore, a “one to ten” graph has been designed to help sort out the type of tyre you are looking for, i.e., the difference between “off road tyres “ with a “rough, tough tread” and “On Road Tyres” with a more typical “road type” tyre. The standard selection for the best of both Worlds is a tyre with a four rating these tires are more suitable for road use, but will help tyre traction in “Winter situations”, or parking in a field. I hope this guide helps 4×4 tyres are available online at www.pellontyres.co.uk

Who just want to be able to get around the hilly terrain that the Pennines throws at us. Consequently, the General AT provides all types of users. Hence, with a solid grip and offers the users excellent handling when on and off the road situations.
  3. The AT tyres are built to highly durable standards. Thus protecting them from rock and stone damage. Consequently, both on the tread area and the sidewalls. Hence, in fact, I cannot remember seeing an AT with any of this type of damage. They usually wear out first. After a high mileage is recorded because of the compound used in this tyre to also give extra safety when driving on asphalt and off-road.
  4. The latest tyre to the grabber range is the AT2, which has been developed to provide a quieter ride and better wet road braking to cope with the popularity of the SUV vehicles, using this type of tyre in the winter time.

Michelin Tyres Dominant at “Renault Event” at Silverstone Race Track

Michelin Tyres Dominant

Michelin Tyres Dominant; Renault cars use Michelin tyres

Michelin Tyres Dominant

Michelin Tyres Dominant

Dave Smith of Pellon Tyres in Halifax West Yorkshire. Enjoyed a great day out at the Silverstone race track on Sunday. So, Dave took along his two children. Because although the car racing was good, there was also a funfair. Including, plenty of good eating places. Of course, Dave also took a few pictures for the Pellonautocentre blog, (a splendid idea, ).I thought.

Michelin takes a significant part in the Renault event.  Mainly I think because they are both French companies. It still shows though that the most well-known tyre company in the World. Consequently,  still take part in many events. In the past this has made them one of the best tyre products on today’s cars. Including, both production cars and racing cars tyres. I still can not praise them enough. So, in my early days of been a tyre dealer I hated Michelin tyres because their business plans never included the small guys.

Michelin Tyres Dominant; The parents of the modern tyre

All their efforts went to selling the tyre products to larger companies, however over the years I have slowly grown to like and indeed admire the enormous effort and resources that they have put in to help develop today’s modern tyres. We at Pellon sell Michelin tyres at competitive prices online at www.pellontyres.co.uk

Michelin racing tyres are dipping their feet in the world of motorsport again, by supplying tyres to other types of racing, including the FE Championships, which are, of course, the F1 version using electric cars.

“Michelin is back as the official tyre supplier in the STCC. Four classes will compete on the deck from the French manufacturer Michelin 2015 and will supply four levels in the STCC package. Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia goes alongside the sister class Swedish GT formula car class Formula Renault 1.6 and the main class STCC”, said a spokesman for the Scandinavian championship.

Bald tyres-Wet Roads -Bald tyres are just Accidents Waiting to Happen

Bald tyres-Wet Roads; More and More Bald tyres are not getting replaced in the Recession

Bald tyres-Wet Roads; Eric Roberts MD of  Pellon Tyre and Auto Centre in Halifax West Yorkshire, has never seen so many dangerous tyres that have been removed, from customers wheels in 40 years of running a tyre business.

We have all had to cut back in these difficult times but to cut back on buying a car tyre will put the vehicle owner and other motorists in great danger, especially with the weather turning wetter as we go towards September and Autumn and Winter approaches.

Bald tyres-Wet Roads

English: Bald tyres-Wet Roads; Two vehicle aquaplaning due to flash-flooding over Kooringal Road. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The combination of wet roads and bald tyres makes for an accident waiting to happen. The name for this is AQUAPLANING; This is when your tyre is separated from the road surface by a thin layer of water. Therefore, your tyre does not grip.

Because of the absence of tread on the tyre. Then the car can go in any direction when the brakes are applied. Hence, this is the cause of many motorway crashes.Of course,  you may have also seen F1 cars during a race. Because in dry weather conditions, the racing cars are equipped with bald tyres (called slicks). Accordingly, when the weather turns wet, the cars are replaced with tyres that have a tread pattern. Thus the same principals apply for the regular car owner. Therefore, it is highly dangerous to drive on a “BALD” tyre,  and also illegal.

Not only “BALD” tyres? But tyres down to the “STEEL BELT.”

A more pessimistic scenario has recently developed. We are now removing tyres from customers cars. That have gone past the “BALD” stage. Hence,  down to the “STEEL BELT”. As a result, this is now a sombre position to be in. We at Pellon tyres stress that you should have your tyres checked at regular intervals. You may be putting your families, and other drivers live’s at risk. Thus, driving about on tyres in this state.

BMW Runflat tyres-“How they Work” they really are a great safety feature.

BMW Runflat tyres  are now a common feature on today’s modern cars. This advice is given by Pellon tyres of Halifax West Yorkshire.

Higher safety levels with BMW Runflat tyres

Here at Pellon tyres we sell all types of car tyres. Of course, including the BMW Runflat tyres. Thus, found on many of today’s BMW and Mini cars. The usual thing that happens when confronted with having to buy

BMW Runflat tyres

The difference between a runflat tyre and a normal tyre

replacement runflat tyres. of course,is the moaning customer complaining about the cost. This is from people who have bought second or third hand cars.Accordingly, such as BMW minis or older BMW’s and Mercedes saloons.

I suppose you can’t really blame them in these days of recession. Of course, the idea of BMW Runflat tyres was to give the car added safety features.Because, that’s what these tyres do. So it’s understandable that the price of the tyre is more expensive. Because the tyre has more materials in during their manufacture. As a result, with research and development costs to recover.

The runflat tyres have special side walls that are made to take the weight or your can when driven on in a deflated state. (IN OTHER WORDS IF YOU HAVE A PUNCTURE, THE TYRE WILL NOT TEAR UP AND ALLOWS YOU TO GET HOME AT A LOWER SPEED).

If you have a puncture this will sometimes be detected by a tyre deflation warning light.(TPMS) Some drivers are not even aware that they have a puncture, only noticing later that the tyre “looks flat”.

BMW Runflat tyres

If you have a flat tyre do not travel long distances or at high speeds. You can check the correct speed from your local tyre dealer or tyre manufacturers, the usual limit is 50mph but check this out for yourself, check for the speed and distance, then you can travel home safely with the flat tyre. Check your runflat tyres regularly

It is important to check all tyres on a regular basis. Thus, preferably at least every week. This is especially important with runflat tyres. If you don’t have a TPMS system you will not notice that the tyre may be flat or at best have low pressure. When run on, “under inflated” tyres may cause the “inner tyre” to be damaged without detection. But this will be detected with regular pressure checks.

To sum up the BMW Runflat tyres are a great invention. But, I can foresee that all cars will have this safety feature in the future. You must expect to pay more for your runflat tyres because you are getting much more for your money and check your pressures at a regular interval at all times, remember you don’t have a spare wheel.

Kumho tyres offer an excellent runflat tyre.

“MICHELIN TYRES” the great Success Story.(Then came Pirelli Tyres)

MICHELIN TYRES

The Michelin X tyre was developed from an idea and then an invention by American named Arthur W Savage. Tyre companies in America were not interested in the idea of radial tyres. Other tyre companies were still developing the bias belted tyre for use on their large “gas guzzling”cars. But when Savage visited Europe he received a warm welcome and his invention was well received.

Pirelli

Early MGBs were fitted with 165×14 Pirelli Cinturato textile radials

and indeed taken up by

Michelin tyres.

The rest of story is in my previous blogs. The next tyre company to try to emulate the great French tyre company was Pirelli tyres of Italy.

Part 3; Catch Up Time first “Pirelli Tyres”

Pirelli tyres were one of the first European tyre companies. Thus, to try catch up with them and in 1951 introduced the now famous Pirelli Cinturato tyre. Michelin Tyres UK  had tried to protect the copy write of the radial tyre.

The Pirelli Cinturato was first made of “Rayon cords”. Thereby, better known as a textile radial. The original tyre came out as the Cinturato CF57 and quickly became a favourite of many top car makers especially in Italy. Companies the like of Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati were all fitted with Pirelli tyres.

Pirelli tyres and sports cars became a great combination. Pirelli still use the cinturato symbol on its tyres. Such as the Pirelli Cinturato P7 Plus and were always looking over their shoulders at Michelin tyres .

MICHELIN TYREs

The two tyre companies became great rivals. Pirelli tried to increase their size by merging with other tyre companies. They tried merging with Dunlop and Continental but increased its capacity by buying Armstrong tyres of America .Pirelli tyres were also fitting original equipment tyres to marques such as Aston Martin and Jaguar giving their product a very high profile image. The first time that i came across the famous Cinturato tyres  were fitted to the MGB cars in the mid sixties.

The main problems were on the early Jaguars, i remember having to take these cars to the Dunlop depot in Leeds where a Dunlop technician would have to skim some rubber off the tread area to make the tyre round enough to balance them on a regular wheel balancer.

Pellon Tyre and Autocentre offer car and van servicing and repairs to all makes of vehicles.

Pirelli tyres are now available from www.pellonautocentre.com/tyres.htm online with free fitting in the Calderdale area of West Yorkshire.
