FORD KUGA-Malfunction Light is a common problem, but was Solved.

FORD KUGA

FORD KUGA Malfunction Light

Another busy day at Pellonautocentre here in Halifax. Hence, started with another car problem to solve. Albeit not appearing to be that difficult. So the car in question was a black 2009 2ltr TDC1 Ford Kuga.

ford kuga malfunction light

The dreaded Ford Kuga Engine malfunction warning light

Of course, a model that was conceived from a little known, Losis X concept car. As a result, it was a Martin Smith the Ford design chief . Consequently, who is attributed to the shape features . Thus, of an aggressive and sharp styling of this new model. The original concept was for the car to be classed as a crossover. A trend that most of the other leading car companies followed. But nowadays they all seem to blend in with the smaller 4X4 ‘s such as the Freelander’s and the Honda CR-v’s.

The car that we were attending to has a Peugeot 2litre Diesel engine fitted. Which nowadays is a popular thing to do amongst the car manufacturers. Hence,to share technology and even engines. So it seems? As a result, this car is available in two or four wheel drive. Our customers car was a two wheel drive version. In my opinion the car was not particularly made for four wheel driving. Therefore, more suitable for the school run. Including drivers who like to be a little higher up than a normal car.

One thing we have noticed about the Ford Kuga . Frequently, is the lack of power when pulling away . Feeling a little nervous at some roundabouts. Apparently, this is common on some of these crossover cars. As a result, our customer has had this car back to Ford . For all sorts of problems . Even when the car was still under warranty. Including a faulty gearbox. Now preferring to bring their car in to us for servicing and repairs. Hence the visit today.

Why does the Ford Kuga malfunction light come on?

The Ford Kuga Had being driving locally about Halifax. When the “Engine malfunction light” came on . Making the car go into “Limp mode”. Of course, this can happen. Especially, when the engine management system thinks that the engine oil has been DE-graded . For some  Reasons the “Malfunction Indicator Light” comes on. As a result, the customer then limped into us . Hence, to have the car looked at. After a bit of investigating our

ford kuga

Black Ford Kuga with engine malfunction problem

chief mechanics Ryan Linton discovered that this was a fairly common fault. Consequently, an oil and filter change was what was needed.

We changed the oil and filter and reset the engine .With our engine management tool, to reset the light and take it out of safe mode. Looking at some of the Used Ford Kuga on Ford Cars forums this is a common fault, but my advice is if this happens to you, take the car to an independent garage and ask for a price for doing the job. We charged this customer £50 for all the work doing but I cannot help feeling that Ford may charge for the malfunction light re-setting and the oil and filter change.

If you own a Ford Kuga and this happens to you and the car only lets you do 30 mph, then limp into your favorite garage and get an oil and filter change before resetting the warning light. If this does not work then the Ford garage may be the next port of call?

Here is a recent reply from an unhappy FORD KUGA customer with electrical problems-

Hi I’ve had electrical problems with my 09! kuga it was the electrical control box with the fuses in under the glove box it pulls down to access it . Garage opened it up and it was wet and corroded . I purchased a new box and had it programmed on a computer and it was all good again . Now six weeks later it’s happened again . Took it back to garage and it’s wet and corroded again .

The mechanic rang ford and they said we should have bought a new loom with it even though they never advised us of this when we purchased the new control box . Evidently ford know about this problem yet refuse to acknowledge the faulty loom etc . This also happens on the fiesta focus and now even the new ford vans . My auto electrician told me that now they shrink wrap the loom where it enters the box so ford obviously are aware of this problem yet refuse to help customers .

They said if they had done the work they would have continued to find the fault but as they only supplied the box it wasn’t down to them . I see loads of people on the net with all sorts of electrical problems and I’m sure if you all check your control box it will be wet and corroded it always effects the wipers . But the car goes bonkers all sorts of faults like alarm going off heater fan coming on etc etc . They need to put their hands up to this as now they expect me to buy another box and a new loom which they say is enviable !!! Even though I just paid £9000 for the car . It’s shameful we need to threaten them with trading standards and watch dog . Which is what I will be doing now . Please share

Peugeot 107-Calls In for a Fan Belt Fitting

Lady driver with a Peugeot 107 Calls In for a Fan Belt Fitting

So, this little car from Peugeot is a favorite little about town car. Incidentally, and is the same car as the Citroen C1 and the Toyota Aygo. The particular model of the 107 that we had brought into us  with many problems.

Peugeot 107,fan belt

Old damaged water pump that caused the fan belt to break

Had a 1.0 liter three cylinder engine fitted. With a brake horse power of 68! Which is really enough for about town driving. But when I have road tested them in hilly Halifax! Subsequently, then they are lacking in power.  Having to change right down to second gear. To negotiate a fairly moderate hill. Generally though, the little car is nippy around town and is a favorite with lady drivers. In fact our customer with the problems was a lady driver.

She in fact loves her little Peugeot 107. So, and loves the way that the car handles. Especially, when parking and maneuvering, with an excellent turning circle. She did however think that the car does bang and rattle a little. Significantly, when driving over bumpy roads, the suspension is a little hard and some of our other customers have had suspension problems, but like the rest of the country we have been plagued with numerous potholes here in the Halifax area of Yorkshire.

But in general this does not deter the customers from buying these charming little She in fact loves her little Peugeot 107 and loves the way that the car handles when parking and maneuvering, with an excellent turning circle cars, that as I say are more suitable for driving about town, I suppose it is similar to the a modern version of the old Peugeot 106, which had similar characteristics in a bygone driving era.

However; back to the lady with the broken fan belt.

The lady presented us with Peugeot 107 Petrol engine 2007 model, which she thought that she had a broken fan belt. When we examined the car we found that fan belt had indeed come off, but this had been caused by the water pump having a seized up bearing and was also leaking water.

To correct the problem the with her little Peugeot 107 and loves the way that the car handles when parking and maneuvering, with an excellent turning circle had to have a new water pump and fan belt. This type of water pump comes complete with its own bearings and is a relatively easy job to replace. The

Peugeot 107,water pump and fan belt

New water pump complete with a new fan belt

whole job took about one hour from start to finish and the lady was able to have a coffee and relax in our reception watching the Commonwealth Games on the receptions TV.

Peugeot 107,water pump

New water pump fitted in place

In my opinion this one of the big advantages of owning an independent garage, we are able to repair cars with such problems, while the customers can wait in the pleasant surroundings of a well-equipped reception area.

This of course stems back to the days when we were more commonly known as kwick-fit centres, fitting things like brakes , exhaust systems and tyres while the customer waited for the job doing.

We of course still do this but cars have become much more sophisticated and the repair times have become much longer, so on some jobs the traditional booking in the car system has to be used, because of the time it may take to carry out the work.

It could cost you up to 10 times the price as it does here in the UK. In France. A friend of mine , (who lives there). Always waits until he visits the UK to have his Air-Con Service. Also buys tyres and batteries, because of the price difference.Especially, between here and the other European countries.

Just out of interest. The first air con- system for a car was invented back in 1939 by Packard, in America and was the first to be fitted in the factory in 1940. The first refrigerant originally used was highly damaging to the atmosphere, and a safer gas was later used in the 1960s.

Air-Con Service

Here at Pellonautocentre in Halifax GB. We have many customers that have an annual Air-Con service. This ensures that their car performs properly all the year round. It ensures that  their  system works without a hitch. This will clean out all the dirt and germs that have built up in the course of time. It will also recharge the gas as necessary. The other option would be to leave yours on until there is a drop in the  temperature and performance.

This way will leave a risk of leaving yours on  until there is a problem, the problem may arise with the result in a bigger repair and service bill. Either way, in between summers, you do still need to think about your air conditioning system, we recommend that you leave yours on all through the autumn and winter, this stops the gas pressure from falling. Most of the public do not know that you should leave the Air-Con on all year round, but I do understand that the cars now coming out with smaller and greener engines will use more fuel with the Air-Con Service in cooler weather. Any bad smells coming from your air- con system should be checked at your nearest Autocentre for a Car Service, if you do not know of one in your area look online for your nearest Unipart Car Care Centre, where you will get free advice on what to do with your car  Air-Con System.

Dual Mass Flywheel-changed to Solid Flywheel on Peugeot 307

Dual Mass Flywheel

Peugeot 307 Dual Mass Flywheel change? Or was it

Dual Mass Flywheel

New Dual Mass Flywheel fitted in place

If you are the owner of a Peugeot 307. Then if you’re DMF( dual mass flywheel) starts to play up on you. Thus, you may like to know. That an alternative solid flywheel and clutch is available. Hence, as a cheaper replacement.

We at Pellonautocentre here in Halifax UK recently did just that. Consequently, one of our customers asked us to road test his car. Because he suspected that his clutch was on the way out. As a result, sure enough it had gone.Unfortunately, when we checked the clutch out. The car had a Dual Mass Flywheel clutch fitted.

He brought in the car and we split the gearbox to get to the clutch.Sure enough it was fitted with a Dual Mass Flywheel. It comes as a big shock to the hard up customers. Thus, that these expensive clutches are fitted to a regular type family saloon. For this reason, we knew that some of these Dual Mass Flywheel units could be replaced. By a standard solid flywheel and clutch. So, we made a few inquiries. Sure enough there was a normal replacement for this model. Peugeot 307 takes a normal solid flywheel and clutch. Consequently, not the- dual mass flywheel -originally fitted

Dual Mass Flywheel

We gave the customer the choice. However, I think the fact that it was going to cost him much less for the solid flywheel. Swung it in the solid flywheels favour. The standard one was fitted. Finally, the job was completed. Afterwards, the customer went away a bit better off and very happy.

After looking into this a little bit further. Mainly into Peugeot forums on the internet. I discovered that most forum contributors. Subsequently, say that it is all-right to carry out this conversion with only a couple saying to stick to the original Dual Mass Flywheel system, it is a case of “pay your money and take your chance”.

To show you how a Dual Mass Flywheel Failure works I have added a link to a good you-tube video please take a look…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfNjARZc5Wo

Dual Mass Flywheels were invented to smooth out gear changes on diesel cars, I think this was originally in Germany by BMW in association with LUK clutches.

Dual Mass Flywheel-Lady with RAV4 complained that her car would not pull very well

On the same day we had a lady motorist turn up complaining that her Toyota RAV4 would not pull very well and there was a rattling noise coming from underneath her car these were typical Dual Mass Flywheel Symptoms .

We put the car on a ramp (lift) and sure enough the car had a broken Dual Mass Flywheel. Because the car was not performing well with a suspected Dual Mass Flywheel Failure, the lady decided not to go for a cheaper replacement and we went on to fit a new LUK full DMF replacement. The car and the lady owner went away a happy customer knowing that we had cured her Toyota RAV4 Problems. This just shows two sides of the story, one guy wanted a cheaper job doing on his Peugeot 307 and the Lady wanted the correct replacement for her RAV4, it is always good to give the customer the choice.

Check Your Levels-Top 5 simple maintenance tips everyone should know- Unipart car care centres

Check Your Levels

Look after your car Check Your Levels in this Easter hot weather

This is very good and important advice to every motorist. So, to get your car through this Easter hot weather! Without causing any damage to the engine, brakes or indeed anything else.

Check Your Levels

avoid a blowout like this CHECK your tyres and Check Your Levels

Make sure you Check Your Levels. Including, water levels, your engine oil (Make sure that you top it up using the correct grade). If you are not sure do ! do not just use any old engine oil. Ask your local service centre to sell you the correct grade of oil for your car.

Consequently, you will most probably have Synthetic Engine Oil in your car. But if you are not so sure what to use then refer to your Engine Oil Guide. We have computer software. So, that tell you the grades for all the cars and will advise you accordingly.

Watch out for the traditional traffic hot-spots, such as the roads to the coast and set off early if you must travel in the heat, it will not do your car any good held up in slow traffic for hours on end and the kids and the dog in the back wont thank you for it neither, try and go for a quieter route and avoid all the traffic.

Make sure that your Air-Con is working and do not be tempted to lower your windows the temperature in the UK is expected to be in the 30s C this weekend, so the air coming into the car will be very hot and uncomfortable, keep the windows closed and let the Air-Con cool you down.

Make sure that you check your tyres as well as Check Your Levels before setting off.

Your tyres are made by a heat process and the hotter the air and the roads, the more likely that a tyre could blow out , we have all seen the large strips of tyre tread on the side of a motorway,(mainly from lorries) but this can happen to cheap car tyres that have been badly repaired as in some part worn tyres, so do not get caught out and buy good quality new tyres, this is a good investment in safety for your family!

Believe me this will happen, we get many customers that will turn up to my depot on a Monday morning with a blown out tyre, that could have been prevented before hand. The biggest cause is that the tyres were run under pressure, or under inflated . This only makes things worse when the weather is going to hot, so please check your tyres and your tyre pressure, and please

Check Your Levels,engine oil

Very important to Check Your Levels especially the oil level

remember that cheap new car tyres are far better than part worn tyres, you just do not know where part worn tyres have been before you bought them.

More safety information to read about your car in the heat

“Make sure you Check Your Levels and the  washer fluid is topped up. If you are going on a long journey the last thing you want is to run out of washer fluid, especially if the weather is bad. You don’t want to be stopping off for bottles of water to clean away the dirt from your windscreen. Check out our great video” Topping Up A Windscreen Washer Bottle’.

W e can’t re-iterate how important it is to check your tyre pressure. If your tyres are incorrectly inflated it has an impact on fuel economy and tyre wear. Add or remove air as needed to keep your tyres performing at their safest. View our great video” ‘How To Check Your Tyres’.

Hope you have a great time in this sunny weather, now in the past.
