Yokohama Tyres investment-to give Pellon Tyres a 25 years Celebrations Facelift

Yokohama Tyres investment

Yokohama tyres are also interested in promoting the small tyre dealer

Yes that’s right in 2014 (not far off now!) I have been the proud owner of Pellon Tyre and Autocentre here in Halifax, West Yorkshire in the UK.I just can not believe where the time has gone, my kids are all grown up and we have been here for almost 25 years and loved every minute. As an independent tyre business and garage it has been a great time in the tyre industry, with many changes taking place.

In my opinion. Computerization of the business and the internet have had the greatest impact. So on the way that modern garages are run. It has been fascinating see the massive changes. In climate change that has entered into the world of auto’s.

Yokohama Tyres investment

Changing and re-shaping the way we think and the massive drive towards lower emissions. Now the development of the electric car. Consequently, and all the implications that will go with that.

I am pleased to say that as a small independent garage. We have taken the right roads. Still able to confirm that we are very busy. Despite all the competition from the huge national companies . So that are able to expand (and are able to get cash to enable them to do so). We as a small business can not get cash from the banks. Thus, a terrible state of affairs.

Car Tyre Prices have plummeted in recent times. So due to internet competition. Subsequently, we are still able to compete

due to our online tyre selector

Enter Yokohama tyres

This gave us better prices and also target rebates. This has enabled us to retain some of the margins that have been eroded by the internet competition and also makes me feel more secure going into the future. Another important part of dealing with the tyre manufacturers, is that they are willing to help with other aspects of the business, such as promotional work and display materials.

This is where Yokohama tyres online come into the picture. Apart from a great range of tyre products, Yokohama tyres are also interested in promoting the small tyre dealer with some Yokohama Tyres investment , they believe as I do that the local independent tyre dealer has a part to play in the big picture. So I was taken a back when they offered to re-design my depot frontage and reception.

This would also coincide with our 25 years anniversary next year, only a few months away in 2014. Yokohama tyres are a top class product and we at Pellon tyres feel honoured to sell their tyres and work in partnership along with the guys at Micheldever tyres. I have included some images of what the depot will look like when the work is completed.

This Yokohama Tyres investment facelift has added a great new facial look to our tyre shop. The Yokohama Tyres investment also included our reception area, which is now a much brighter place for our customers to relax in. Yokohama like most other tyre companies are having to adapt tyre designs to include the effect of climate change and weather conditions.

Nokian Tyres suffer Russians factory Shutdown !

Nokian Tyres suffer Russians

I am updating this article with a little sadness. Nokian tyres are in a sad state of affairs due to the embargo by the West for goods made in Russia. Of course, Nokian have a manufacturing plant in the cut off country. Thus making the production of car winter tyre grind to a halt.

Before the Russian attacks on the Ukraine the supply of winter tyre into the UK was halted when the British distributer of Nokian car tyres pulled out. Stating that to sell and make a profit had put the price on a Nokian winter tyre too high. This was a sad state of affairs for us as we had only been a certified Nokian dealer for one winter period.

As a result then our customers are having to change tyre brands. Nokian winter tyres were always amongst the best and proved it time and time again. Winning tyre performance competitions year after year. Unfortunately, this has now come to an end for the near future and possibly beyond . Naturally, depending on the length and out come of the Russian aggression.

All the following is the text from the original blog and so I have left it in place. For past and present references.

Original blog post

I am very proud to become the newest Winter Tyres dealer in Yorkshire. Nokian tyres are an excellent product. Especially, in the form of winters .Hence, when the mad rush for winters is on. Thus, we can normally only get them from Germany. As the winter progresses the price of these tyres goes up and up.

Nokian  Tyres have been around for a long time. Consequently, are produced in Finland and Russia. Two of the coldest and snowiest countries in the World. If they do not know how to make tyres then nobody does. For tyre companies to prove their products it is important that they enter their tyres in tests that are held independently by motor sport magazines. One of the most influential magazines in the world is the “Auto Bild” magazine , who hold regular tyre testing events on summer and winter tyres, these test are carried out with complete impartiality and the results can be completely trusted. The tyres were tested earlier this year and were tested with top ratings coming in as the top winter tyre in that size.

The tyre tested was the 205/55×16 tyres , the most common tyres in use today, and was described as with exceptional performance in snow with well balanced handling properties.

Great tyres for winter use

Nokian testimonials come thick and fast here are a few…

  • Chris, Canada
  • “I live in the Highlands of Scotland. Hence, drive a Subaru Impreza and since late September this year I have been using your W+ Nokian Winter Tyres. I am utterly amazed at how good they are. The weather and snow levels here right now are some of the worst I have ever witnessed. I feel way more in control and safer with your tyres on. The car is balanced moves predictably and inspires great confidence. I chose your tyres based on recommendations after doing a lot of research into many brands of winter tyres. They have exceeded my expectations, they are better than my old brand in the dry, are amazing in the wet and so far are shocking me how good they are in the snow. On all levels performance, price, safety and feel. These tyres have me loyal to your brand always now.  Thank you for keeping me safe and getting me back home to my family.”
  • Diarmid, Highlands of Scotland…
  • If you check on the Nokian web site you will see many more testimonials for these excellent winter tyres.

Finally Pellon Tyres are still Nokian dealers after their distributer re-shuffle in 2020.

Nokian winter tyres also came out very favorable in tyre tests carried out by “Auto Express” for further reading and test results…

Punctured Tyre-Lady Drove over 20 Miles on a flat TYRE ?

Punctured Tyre

Female Customer Drove over 20 mile on this Punctured Tyre ?

This is one of the strangest stories I have heard in the past two years. A lady customer called in to claim that she had a service done

to her Audi estate about a month ago, and the car was now acting very strangely. She said that when the car was going round the bend she could feel it swaying slightly, but it was steering perfectly normal on the straight roads. We asked her how long the car had been doing this and she said that for a couple of days or about twenty miles. We went to put the Audi on the ramp, but noticed the car was sloping to one side ?.

When we checked ,she had a tyre that was completely ripped off on one of the side walls.

This Punctured Tyre had in fact been driving with the same characters as Continental Run Flat Tyres, for more than twenty miles. The lady customer had not suspected anything because the car had not swerved violently or even veered from side to side, as you might expect from a big car such as the Audi estate.

The Punctured Tyre is the one shown in this blog and the ripped off side-wall can be easily seen. Credit should also be given to the Continental Sports Contact that took the battering, although not a run-flat it did remarkably well.

So to follow up on this ! Have you noticed all the old tyre treads and pieces of rubber tyre treads ! That are present on the side of the roads and motorways. Especially car tyre treads.

Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre offer car and van servicing and repairs to all makes of vehicles. We are members of Unipart Car Care centres. Giving a nationwide guarantee for all our work and parts. Of course ,we also sell run-flat tyres online such as the Bridgestone safeguard tyres. Of course, from our website www.pellonautocentre.com by using the tyre selector and choosing your tyre size. We offer courtesy cars to local motorists who need to go to work and leave their car with us for work doing. We are also an official MOT testing station and are members of Motor-codes, who carry out checks for high standard of equipment and workmanship.

Yokohama Tyres 19545×16-One of my Favourite cars- Citroen DS3- calls in for two new Yokohama Tyres

Yokohama Tyres 19545×16 have proved to be a good seller to the younger tyre market and that’s where we missed out in the past.

We started to sell Yokohama  about ten years ago but we found it a difficult product to sell. Yokohama as now were very big sellers of wheel and tyre packages, and it was a

thing that we found hard to sell here in Halifax, at the time we did not know that this particular product was one of the first things to be sold on the internet and the market for wheel units were bought by the younger drivers online from a company in Macclesfield selling cheap Yokohama Tyres 19545×16 and wheels online.

We then fell out with Yokohama tyres and concentrated on other tyre companies. This was before we joined Point-S. Point-S are an independent tyre dealer group here in the UK. And gave us the chance to buy directly from the tyre manufacturers for the first time in a few years.

This opened the door for Yokohama tyres again

And we started to deal with them for a second term. This time we were aware of the internet and could price up our tyres competitively. With special price structures we were able to sell this excellent product at very competitive prices and we are now able to offer our customers a good deal for an excellent product. Yokohama Tyres 19545×16 have proved to be a good seller to the younger tyre market and that’s where we missed out in the past.

This driver of this White Citroen DS3 specifically asked for Yokohama Tyres 19545×16 for his car and were definitely the tyre choice for the younger driver. I would also like to take this chance to thank Yokohama for the very professional manner that they showed when fitting my tyre depot with brand new signage and display materials.

Michelin Tyres Development-Set their Targets High as far back as the Thirties

It is no surprise to the older drivers amongst us that Michelin Tyres Development has always been at the forefront of tyre design

Ever since I started work as a junior tyre fitter all those years ago. So, I have marveled at the skill and professional work. That Michelin Tyres Development  have put into their products. Even going back before my time ! French tyre makers were at the top of tyre development.Subsequently, all the other tyre companies were playing catch-up.

Enter the first steel belted radial that started it all off for Michelin tyres.

This was to be the tyre that changed their history. Including the great American tyre makers of the time. Of course, this new tyre from Michelin tyres was to be a far cry from the cross ply. Significantly, made by most other European tyre companies . Including, the Bias-belted tyres that were been developed in the USA.

The new Michelin Tyres Development was to be known as the Michelin”X”. Consequently, first appearing in 1949 (a year after I was born). This tyre would revolutionize the tyre industry ! With a product that would last longer and prove better car handling. Especially, for the type of suspension that was used on European cars.

This tyre was to be fitted as original equipment to Lancia and Citroen cars and also to the Mercedes 190 SL models.

It took a good ten years before the other tyre makers started to catch Michelin Tyres Development up, all trying to copy the steel belted “X” tyre.

Compared to the cross-ply tyre the radial gave many advantages. They  gave a much better mileage and road holding, ( I must admit that when I was in my early tyre fitting days. I can remember drivers complaining about Michelin  being bad in wet weather ?). This also gave added bonus of lower fuel consumption, a great

bonus for some of those old gas guzzling cars.

This is also the same time that imported cars were coming into the UK cars such as the Citroen 2 CV and Renault Dauphins.

More reading…The Dauphine took over from the 4 CV in 1956, but not as a replacement. The name dauphine (heiress) was highly significant. Release was a major event on the motoring scene, and followed up by a successful career on French and export markets.

Dauphine played its successor’s role to the full, boasting all the latest features of the epoch, such as adjustable seats, heating, and an automatic gearbox. The finish was very smart, with a red and black steering wheel and matching seats. The dashboard layout was uncluttered, and the interior roomy.

Dauphine was a four-seater, with rear bench and two separate seats at the front. In January 1957, the US motoring weekly The Motor crowned it the “prettiest little four-seater in the world”. Sure, it was beautiful, elegant and shapely, totally in keeping with spirit of the 1960s.”…http://www.renault.com/en/vehicules/hier/pages/renault-dauphine.aspx

The Dauphin did not do too well in the “Cold Damp British climate”

So, soon had a bad reputation for bad rust. But it did come out on Michelin tyres, and I will never forget. Of course, the first time I had to remove one of these products  from the rim. The tyre just fell off the wheel it was so easy to do. A big improvement on the struggle we had when fitting Dunlops . In those days we only had a hand held tyre bead breaker and some tyre levers, balancing was carried out on a small “bubble” wheel  balancer which I still believe never really worked.

To conclude Michelin Tyres Development have never looked back and in the early days. Because of their better cornering they were used in the early motor-sport cars with great success.

Continental Tyre Advice-Continental tyres make new gadgets

Conti Car Tyres has been stepping up its line of products as it already delivers tyres which are equipped with a sensor that tells the user just how much…

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

New Tyre Advice just one of things to come?

Now that we will all be using TPMS systems in the future . So, it comes as no surprise that other gadgets will be developed. Naturally, to aid the motorist. Hence, in the constant drive for more road safety on our cars.

This new device from Continental will be no exception. Significantly, will tell the driver if the car is overloaded or not. Overloading is one of the main dangers associated with the cars handling. Of course, this can be very dangerous when cornering with an overloaded car.

No doubt there will be many more gadgets coming through in the years to come. Thus, to aid drivers probably on German cars such as the BMW’s and Mercs. Working in conjunction with the German tyre giant  Tyre Advice professionals . These devices will also become more common on vehicles such as caravans and motor-homes. Tyresafe Partworn Campaign-About the dangers of buying Part Worn Tyres-www.tyresafe.org

Tyresafe Partworn Campaign

Part Worn Tyres Are False Economy

Post updated  2/2/2014

Tyresafe Campaign about part worn tyres; are just not worth the money ?

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

Trading Standards

Pellon tyres are a member of Tyresafe and are concerned about part worn tyres

For all tyre safety matters this is the web-site to look at . So inwardly digest what they are saying.

Before buying Part worn tyres you must look at what they have to say?. To prove a point, the Tyresafe Campaign . By buying sample part worn tyre products from all over the country. Thus, working out the real worth of part worn tyres . Hence,  the facts are startling. As a result, you should not be buying these tyres. Unfortunately, not only could they be dangerous . But” pound for pound” they are not worth the money . Consequently, that you will pay out for them .

What constitutes a part worn tyre to be sold legally?

Many local council trading standards officers . Are pursuing part worn tyre outlets . Frequently, prosecuting the ones that are breaking the law. Not least Warwickshire County Council. Part worn tyres must be checked for cuts, bulges, exposed tyre cords . So, should have no foreign bodies embedded in them . Such as nails and screws. For this reason, they should be clearly marked as part worn tyres. Including, with a minimum tread depth of 2 mm all round. Before they can be sold.

Trading standards officers often pretend to be genuine customers and go round buying part worn tyres, to be tested. Janet Faulkner, Head of Warwickshire Trading Standards Service said:

Tyresafe Partworn Campaign

“Whilst all the tyres we purchased passed the tread depth test, only one was stamped as ‘part-worn’ and two failed because of tread separation or slow pressure loss, neither of which would be obvious to a consumer straight away. Our advice is that it’s always safest to buy brand new tyres, but if you are buying part-worn, make sure the tyre has been tested, check the tread depth, look out for lumps and bumps and keep an eye on the tyre pressure”

The first Bridgestone First to be made was the 195/65R15 H rated tyre.

The new rating is for grip on wet roads. As a result, the road noise, or lack thereof. This is measured in decibels.

Most importantly, to demonstrate how quiet the tyre is on various road surfaces. The new tyres are also very light in weight.

So, I will compliment the new EV cars that are now on the market. Bridgestone First AA Rated Tyre, have reduced the weight of the new tyre. Thus, to help reduce the weight of these new EV cars, naturally for greener performance and lower emissions. This is in line with all the major tyre companies.

Runflat Tyres Are-Safer-When a rapid tyre de-flation happens on your car

Runflat Tyres Are-Safer

6 reasons to use run flat tyres

  1. You can continue driving even if you get a flat tyre. Run-flat tyres have reinforced sidewalls that allow you to drive for a short distance (usually 50-80 miles) even if the tyre is completely flat. This can be particularly useful if you are driving in an area where you cannot easily change a tyre, such as on a highway or in a remote location.
  2. You won’t have to carry a spare tyre. Because run-flat tyres can be driven on even when they are flat, you don’t need to carry a spare tyre in your trunk. This can save you space and weight, and make it easier to pack your car for a trip.
  3. You won’t have to change a tyre in bad weather or a dangerous location. If you get a flat tyre in bad weather or on the side of the road in a dangerous location, you may be hesitant to change the tyre yourself. With run-flat tyres, you can simply drive to a safer location to get the tyre repaired or replaced.
  4. You won’t have to worry about getting stranded. If you get a flat tyre and don’t have a spare or the tools to change it, you could be stranded on the side of the road waiting for help to arrive. With run-flat tyres, you can at least drive to a nearby service station or garage to get the tyre repaired or replaced.
  5. You can still drive at high speeds. Some run-flat tyres are designed to be driven at high speeds even when they are flat, so you won’t have to slow down if you get a flat tyre on the highway.
  6. They can improve vehicle handling. Run-flat tyres are designed to maintain their shape even when they are flat, which can help to improve vehicle handling and stability. This can be particularly useful if you are driving in emergency situations or in challenging road conditions.

So what do run flat tyres actually do ?

In general, many of my customers complain. Especially, when they have to buy their first replacement runflat tyres. Customers simply do not understand how these tyres have evolved during the past 10 years of car design. Consequently, its all linked with green house gasses and your cars emissions.

Runflat tyres are safer and also help to reduce the overall weight of your car. Of course, this is done by not having a spare wheel, jack, or wheel brace. So, this reduces the overall weight of the car, thus making it more fuel efficient.

No spare wheel reduces weight

Also, the fact that you do not have a spare wheel gives you more space in the boot and, as stated, a lighter load. Runflat tyres are also made with fewer materials than standard tyres. which also makes them more environmentally friendly.

As far as tyre performance is concerned the BMW Run Flat Tyres are just the same as the conventional tyres. Providing all of the advantages of modern performance tyres. Predominantly, the main difference is that your car has a puncture while you are out driving.

Then the runflat tyre will not deflate, giving your car normal handling and cornering. therefore reducing the risk of an accident with other road users. So, in other words, run-flat tyres are safer. This is especially important if you were in the fast lane of the highway when the puncture occurred.

Your normal tyre would instantly deflate, making your car very unstable and possibly causing a bad accident. In fact, figures show that tyres cause a large percentage of motor related accidents, and the run flat tyres are a big improvement on the accident figures, enabling the driver to keep a straight line when a puncture occurs in one of the run-flats.

These new runflat tyres systems were originally created to keep drivers safe

because punctures and blowouts can be dangerous. The vast majority of fatal road accidents are caused by drunk drivers. Apart from safety, a flat tyre can be a real inconvenience. adding time, cost, and sometimes embarrassment to your journey. Changing a tyre is fairly straightforward.

But it often occurs at the most inopportune moment. Frighteningly, getting stuck on the side of a motorway. Especially in the pouring rain with noisy kids in the back seat, this is really no fun at all! And trying to change a tyre on the hard shoulder can be dangerous in itself, or even impossible if you are disabled or elderly, in fact many drivers have to call out the rescue services to change the wheel for them,

But the drivers with runflat tyres and tpms systems do not have to put up with this

Of course, once the tyre warning light comes on in the cab, they can safely tootle home or carry on with their journey (all be it at 50 mph, which is the recommended speed once you have a flat on your runflat tyres).

Runflat Tyres Are-Safer; Any vehicle fitted with runflat tyres

should also include a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) this will show you whether you tyre pressure has been lost, this is because without this the loss of pressure in your tyres will not be noticed

Of course, runflat tyres are designed to maintain driving speed, handling, and smoothness. particularly when a puncture occurs. Indeed, even when driving on a motorway. A TPMS is essential to alert the driver to a loss in tyre pressure. To be sure, it will indeed become part of the MOT test in the near future. Your TPMS works from either a sensor in your wheel, which is usually a special valve, or from the car’s ABS braking system.

Almost all of the world’s leading tyre companies Continental and Goodyear, among others, manufacture runflat tyres, including Bridgestone Run Flat Tyres. Cheap tyres can be bought online, but I recommend that you stick with the brand that you have on your car at the moment, or, as a good, cheaper alternative, we recommend General  tyres.

Since first writing this post, the the runflat tyre has increased in the popularity

However, the public still begrudgingly pays for them. As a result, these tyres are now standard equipment on smaller car models. So, the problem starts when the cars become second-hand and start to need new tyres.

Fortunately,  runflat tyres are now available in “budget tyre” brands. One of the most popular tyre sizes is 205/55R16. Of course, this is also a runflat tyre size as well as a conventional radial tyre size. Significantly, this size is available in several brands. including the 205/55R16 WINMAX EURUS63 91V RFT at £67 fitted. Chinese tyre manufacturer Jinyu also make the Jinyu YU63 economy runflat tyre range.

So these advancements have helped with the motoring expenses of the less well-off drivers with smaller cars.

There is no doubt in my mind now, that these runflat tyres are safer. especially when driving on our overcrowded highway system. A poor motorist had a tyre blowout on the M6 just a few weeks ago. I know because I was caught up in the massive tailback.

As a result, a lady driver with a very flat tyre was caught in the fast lane with a tyre blowout. She looked terrified as the traffic began to back up and during the vehicles’ recovery. So I couldn’t help but think that if she had runflat tyres, she might have been able to limp the car off the highway and home. at 50 MPH. To put it simply, these Runflat Tyres Are-Safer and get drivers home safely.
