Solar panels on car roofs a great idea but not a new idea

So, in my opinion this idea from Ford motor company is one of the biggest step forwards yet. Especially, in the quest for the electric cars! Enabling, them to cover more mileage.

Significantly, this car could be run on solar energy from Solar Panels . Even when the car is running about ! Consequently, the batteries will also be charged. Developments like this will be a big step in the right direction ! So, I can envisage all EV’s and all electric cars will have this technology. Incorporated in the cars electric system. Aiding charging.

This is not the first time that solar panels have been used to power cars

 

So, I believe that it will be the first time that a major car manufacturer. Has incorporated solar panels onto an actual model.

Consequently, a guy called Ed Passerini ! Was probably the first man to invent the first solar powered car ! Way back in 1977. After building several smaller prototype cars. He eventually built the solar car known as Bluebird.

More recently in 1983 two Australian’s, Hans Tholstrup and racing driver, Larry Perkins . Managed to drive a solar powered car from Perth to Sydney. Totaling 2566 miles a great achievement ! The vehicle was called the “Achiever”. Equipped with a solar cell panel fitted to the roof. Hence,that charged 2 x 12 volt lead acid leisure batteries.

So the charged batteries were to be used for use when the Sun was behind clouds or even in darkness. Many of today’s Solar Panels and solar energy equipment had not even been invented back then, so the electrics they used were pretty basic. They had an electric motor to drive the car with a basic type gearbox that could only have the gears changed when the vehicle was stopped. The acceleration was done by either using 24 volts or 12 volts, the 24 volt was the fastest option, depending on the amount of battery storage.

Other recent tries at utilizing solar energy were carried out by the larger auto companies such as Ford, using them in the headlights.

Solar power is now getting more popular, even here in the UK. You have only to drive around to see that many homes have now got solar panels on the roofs of their houses.

started to write this article. So, about the growing threat that is coming from the huge increase in solar panel use. Growth of Solar City the country’s largest installer of PV solar panels. Consequently, combined with the ambitions of American car maker Tesla Motors,.Who’s intentions are to build a massive battery building plant. So to help bring down the cost of building the car batteries that are used to power their electric cars.

It is now thought that these types of Solar Batteries. Are to be used to store the power that is produced by the solar panels. This type of system is used at the moment. By thousands of homes in America. Especially in remote areas where it is not possible to connect to the national electricity grid. Using in built-up areas in our cities and towns.

If this is the case here in the UK, then I see no problem with a similar system in the States, especially for town and city dwellers.

 

The possibility of huge amounts of electricity being produced in the future opens up other arguments, such as why should we build more fossil fuel power plants or indeed nuclear, when it will be possible to store the electricity in massive battery storage plants. Surely we are swiftly approaching the time for all the parties involved to get their heads together and smell the coffee.

It does not take much figuring out, that here am I on a sunny march day watching my solar panels meter clicking over and reducing my electric bill, times this by millions and the income of the utility companies will collapse. This is only possible because of the technology that is speeding along at the rate of knots.

This brought me to my earlier thought. Here in the UK, we do use solar panels, but we have limited amount of actual sun power, because of the tilt of the Earth the sun is very low in winter and therefore not at the right angle to supply rooftop solar panels with enough energy. The spring and summertime are fine and we can get the regular strong sun to make solar panels a viable proposition.

To me, this would be a great challenge for the European Union. It is not rocket science to see that the Southern European countries have much more sunshine hours than the richer

Northern Hemisphere countries such as Germany and the UK. Therefore would it not make economic sense for the Southern countries to produce the electricity from giant banks of solar panels, such as the ones in the deserts of America and the Northern countries.
