Car Servicing Choice : Dealer or independent?

Motoring

It’s a question most owners of cars that are still under warranty are often confronted with: “Dealer servicing can be very expensive, independent operators can be less so.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Independent or Main Dealer for Car Servicing Choice ?

To me this is a no brainer. But I would say that wouldn’t I?  This has been a long standing argument. Probably always will be. In both sectors of the car servicing market we have good and bad garages. The main dealers do seem to come and go quicker than the independent garages. Probably because they are under the wings of the Car manufacturers that they are the franchise for.

Car Servicing Choice

Here in Halifax alone we have had several franchise garages.Hence, that have closed down recently. Some have re-opened as they connect with other car manufacturing companies.

For example the Skoda garage becomes the Fiat dealership and so on. So,it happens all the time. Some of them don’t appear to last a year or two. Thus, before they either close down or change hands. Of course, that’s the picture here in the UK. Also, I suspect the same will apply to the States.

On the other hand the smaller Independent garage seem to “tough it out”. Providing they are honest and keep a good business. Consequently they will always survive.

Although I have noticed that there are a few more smaller auto centres. Subsequently, here in the North of England are up “for sale”. Mainly because the owners are retiring ,”so it say’s in the adds”. In my opinion it may be because they are under a bit of pressure at the moment, due to the economy, I am not sure.

The larger independent garages are joining national groups, to give them a more corporate image. For example I am a Unipart Car Care Centre, and our garages are vetted for quality and workman ship practices with the emphasis on fair prices for the motorists and a better Car Servicing Choice . This gives me satisfaction that I am a local business. So as well as a Car Garage.

Keeping my eyes on local competition and trends, whilst at the same time we have nationwide corporate image, sort of “best of both worlds”. To me this formula is a winner and at the moment we are very busy, so the proof is in the pudding, we can give good service and a good Car Servicing Choice to our customers, where the franchised dealers will always struggle to compete on price and service.

MOT Test Combined with Car Servicing

Unlike an MOT test, servicing is not a legal requirement for your vehicle. However, you will probably find that regular servicing can help to keep everything.

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

We all must be responsible for our cars servicing and MOT test

Sometimes I find it a great shame. Incredibly,  that we in the motor trade. Insistently, have to keep harping on about servicing your cars. One of the main excuses in recent times! Of course, has been the recession. Recently, car drivers just haven’t had any spare cash to spend on their vehicles. Consequently, we have all seen people just putting £10’s worth of fuel into their cars at the filling station? Ridiculous, but true !

In my opinion I think that these people should have some kind of a budget. A sort of “piggy bank” and save to have their vehicle serviced. Including any mechanical work required when it goes in for its annual MOT test. Incidentally it is estimated that 4.7 million miss their mot testing date. I am sure that drivers either just flaunt the law or are not aware that driving your

mot test

car without a valid MOT test certificate is an offense reference section 47 of the 1988 Road Traffic Act.

More reading… http://www.mybrief.com/drivingoffences.asp?type=29&p=No%20M.O.T

Also driving without an MOT test will make your insurance invalid and you may receive a fine of up to £1000. Is it really worth it, when you can have an MOT test and a service for most average family saloons for around £150? If you are not sure where you can go for your vehicle serviced you should go online and look for your nearest Unipart Car Care Centre (UCCC), they will offer you excellent service at a fair price.

Once you have had your MOT test and service you should be safer for another year, although I recommend that you have an engine oil and filter change in between the tests to be on the safe side. Also do not forget check your levels at regular periods, say once a week and top them up when required.

Here we are now at the back end of 2014, nearing Christmas time and the price of fuel has plummeted. The only problem is that the price of oil and petrol is not following as fast. The experts say that it may take a little longer for this to take place, but i was just wondering if services on cars wold be also coming down. I am not so sure , but i suspect so.

Peugeot 406- Brakes- Not checked for Two Years? have you checked yours recently?

Peugeot 406 not serviced for over two years and has a brakes issue.

Car owners sometimes make my “blood boil”. This particular motorist had decided to have his Peugeot 406 serviced and did not realise that the car had not had a service for well over two years, he insisted that the car had a service in 2012 when it was in for the MOT test, but when we looked it up on our computer system, it was in fact 2011 when it was last serviced. He swore us down that it was only last year and there must be a fault on our computer system.

However he left the Peugeot 406 with us and we proceeded with the service and changed all the oils and relevant filters, the oil was thick and black and there was not much of it and the filters were totally clogged up, we think that in another few months the engine would probably have blown up, due to lack of maintenance.Peugeot 406

The car was in for an annual MOT test in 2012 and it passed ,but the car had not been serviced as the customer had thought, however he would have known this because his invoice was only for £39.90,the price of the MOT test. Ryan my head mechanic then removed the wheels to check out the brakes as the car had a “ low efficiency reading”,on the rolling road brake tester.

Peugeot 406 brakes discs were just solid rust.

On inspection the front brakes needed a set of brake pads and the discs cleaning up. The rear discs on the Peugeot 406 were completely rusted solid and in a real mess. The rear Car Brake Pads and Disc Brakes had to be completely replaced because they were in such bad condition. In Ryan’s opinion this work would not have been needed if the Peugeot 406 had been serviced at more regular intervals. Car owners do not understand that their car is a machine made from millions of small parts and they need regular servicing and attention, it is not just a money thing it is all about safety.

I wonder how many people would travel by airplane if they thought that they had not been serviced for ages (not many).

Luckily modern cars are now equipped with electronic assistance’s to warn the driver about any pending problems, they warn you if your pads are getting low, a brake warning light will light up on the dash. Modern braking systems also have electronic assistance’s, known as (EBS) and have other additional braking aids such as Anti-lock brake system (ABS) and electronic stability program (ESP) Traction control system(TCS) and also electronic brake-force distribution (EBD).

These systems are now becoming common features on today’s modern cars and are all designed to aid the driver when braking in different weather and bad situations that may occur. When you have to brake on an icy road or an uneven surface the electronic assistance will apply the correct pressure on the front and rear brakes at the right time to avoid the car from skidding out of control.

In my opinion this is all very good but the car owners should take the basic steps of making sure that their brakes ore in good condition by having the car serviced at a reputable service centre or at least have their Car Brakes serviced. . If you do not know one in your area look online for your nearest Unipart Car Care Centre, Peugeot 406 brakes

Car Safety Servicing-CAR OWNERS Must Keep Up With it For SAFETY REASONS?

Car servicing will ensure your car is safer to drive.

Car Safety Servicing

These tyres were removed from a BMW that had not had Car Safety Servicing for two years

Please let me go through some basics about your car. Your car no matter what make or type and no matter how much it cost or how much it’s worth, is a highly sophisticated machine, made up from millions of different parts, so that it can take the occupants from A to B in the “safest” possible way.

I use the word”safest,” because at the end of the day that’s what your car is all about, moving us all around, without breaking down or crashing into other car users, because the steering wheel fell off ?or the brakes failed, this is what happens when not Car Safety Servicing at regular intervals.

If you look at the top ten reasons why cars crash in the UK, you will not see mechanical failure as a reason, but if you look at this next link you will see that mechanical failure does not make the “top ten”, but is very close and should be taken into account…

“Not making the list but very important to mention is “Mechanical Failure”. While many car accidents occur due to mechanical failure, the vast majority of mechanical failure accidents are due to poor vehicle maintenance. Car design malfunction account for a very small percentage. Many car owners fail to read their owners manuals which results in poor Car Safety Servicing. They skip important chores such as regular oil changes, brake maintenance, Servicing a Car, tyre inspection and proper tyre inflation, as well as topping up important fluid levels. Keeping these points in mind can make you a better driver, prevent you thousands of pounds or dollars in repair fees or most importantly save your life. Simply put, Stay alert to stay alive”…http://mintinfo.hubpages.com/hub/Top-10-causes-of-Car-Accidents

Car servicing helps ensure that your tyres and tyre pressures are safe.

MOT Testing stations a usually reliable sign that you can trust the garage

According to the website www.safemotorways.co.uk a staggering 164 crashes were caused by under inflated tyres in the last 5 years, and a tyre pressure campaign carried out by the very prestigious  company Michelin across Europe showed that the UK ranked 25th out of 27 countries, the only two to fair worst were Greece and Latvia, this really shows how bad as a country we are when caring for our cars. This survey was done in 2008, but in my opinion and due to the recession things have not improved, this is because of the number of completely “bald”, tyres that we are removing from our customers cars.

Although tyres are a very important part of Car Safety Servicing, many other mechanical parts are also very important the obvious ones are your brakes and the steering. It is all these things that will be picked up by your garage when having your car serviced and on your cars MOT test, (in the UK).

The “LANCHESTER” was designed by Mr George Lanchester. Who created an upmarket version of the” BSA ten” from around 1933. They also developed a model of car known as theRoadrider”. Before the beginning of the second World War. Lanchester was later bought out by “BSA”. Hence, the owners of Daimler and the Lanchesters were made to take second place to the new Daimler models. Sadly in 1956. Because the last model of the Lanchester known as the sprite was phased out.
