Lead Acid Auto Batteries-will Not Store for very long without regular charging?

Lead Acid Auto Batteries

You must not store discharged Lead Acid Auto Batteries

Lead acid batteries were a great invention; they have been going strong for over 130 years. Although they may be under threat from today’s lithium-ion batteries, I believe that they hear to stay even much longer, with petrol and electric cars driving side by side. The lead acid batteries have supplied us with Cheap Batteries for the last 60 years, with mass production (mainly from the East and China) lowering the cost of motoring. Customers were able to buy batteries online through the internet.

The advanced battery has been durable and dependable when it is also used correctly. The discharge rate is amongst the lowest in the world and is capable of high discharge rates while

Lead Acid Batteries

Lead Acid Batteries-Smart chargers are now more affordable to buy to keep your battery in tip-top condition throughout the winter period.

Delivering bursts of energy that are capable of starting your car engine on a cold morning.

The big problem occurs when you store your lead acid battery in a “DISCHARGED CONDITION”. The 12 Volt Battery will never re-charge again. The battery has a limited number of fully discharged cycles and will only take a couple of deep discharges. The electrolyte in the battery can easily spill, causing environmental damage if spilt.

We have a customer in Lancashire in the UK who has been using cheap car batteries to start large electric generators that are transported, on site. The batteries have been used to start the generators and charged by an alternator when it is running similar to the way a car works.

But when the batteries are left unused

But when the batteries are left stood and unused. Hence, for perhaps 2 or 3 months. Therefore, allows the batteries to discharge totally.Eventually, deteriorate until they can no longer be used. Thus,    the company then wanted to change the batteries under warranty?. This problem will also happen to a battery that is left unused, in a car for long periods. As a result, without been charged. Therefore, the lead-acid car battery has to to be charged fully, at all times.

Then be tested at regular intervals. Hence, to maintain the charge otherwise, the battery will quickly deteriorate and fail. Even in the warranty period. This procedure also applies to other uses of lead acid batteries. Including, AGM golf batteries, motorcycle batteries and Leisure Batteries all of which, should all be fully charged . These days you can buy a smart charger that will keep your battery in a good state of charge over the winter period, or any other time when the battery is dormant.

Wonderful Triumph Car- Spotted when Delivering Batteries to a Customer in kent UK

Wonderful Triumph Car

Wonderful Triumph Car; I always look out now for vintage cars when out delivering my batteries

Now that our internet car batteries site has taken off, I am always on the lookout for a beautiful well kept old cars or other transport related items to use on my blog. I have been surprised at the things that I see driving around the UK. Either delivering or sorting people’s battery problems out. We trade on the internet this takes me all over the country.  I have now developed an interest in vintage cars and their history of course along with other exciting motor things that I may come across.

Wonderful Triumph Car

Triumph Roadster(covered in morning mist)

The latest cars I came across were in a car park in Folkstone Kent. The cars were 1948 Triumph Roadsters because there were two I presume that they were going to some show. These cars were probably running on Six Volt Black Rubber Casing, later cars started using 12 Volt Battery similar to what we use today.

These cars were primarily 1776 cc overhead valve engines with a single SO carburetor. They had a three-speed gearbox which was column change and could reach a maximum speed of around 80 mph.

Wonderful Triumph Car

wonderful triumph roadster

The car was only a three seater and had a detachable roof that could be removed on a sunny day.

Triumph as a company was bought by Sir John Black owner of Standard Motor Co and was interested in promoting the Triumph brand as an upmarket car to compete with the Jaguars. The Roadster was the first car built under the Standard name, in their factory in Coventry England.

In my opinion they certainly did a good job and the car still looks a great car today.

The black batteries used in these old cars can still be bought

About Eric Roberts

Hi I would like to introduce myself. I have worked in the Garage and tyre industry now for 40 years. I worked for a couple of national tyre companies before starting my first business. I now own a company here in the UK called Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre, and I am a keen blogger about anything to do with cars and their related products that will help my business.

Deep Cycle Batteries-This type of battery can be used to start your car.

Deep Cycle Batteries

Deep Cycle Batteries; You need more amps than a starter battery

Deep Cycle Batteries. This is a sort of question in reverse. Most people try to use car or leisure batteries.Hence, to fit their scooters or golf trolleys. But it is possible to use an AGM (Absorbed Glass Matting) type to start a car. Thus, this blog is aimed mainly at the motorhome/camper type customer. Therefore, that are unsure of the kind to fit. This type of battery is sealed and so can be installed on its side if required. Indeed some car makers.Of course, now provide a type of AGM Deep Cycle Batteries one to the interior of the car. Some of the Mazda range are fitted with a sealed one inside the car. Indeed underneath the driver’s seat. Because in the case of spillage during an accident.

Deep Cycle Batteries

Optima Red Top battery-Deep Cycle Batteries

The general rule when fitting an AGM  to a car is to increase the number of amps. Because of the cranking amps in a regular car battery. Are higher than those in an AGM battery. The general rule is. To fit a battery with about 20 to 25% more power in amps than a regular car starter battery. Genuine AGM deep cycle batteries are available in “Optima batteries”, from www.batteriesontheweb.co.uk

Deep Cycle Batteries

The modern car engine with electronic ignition and fuel injection does not need as much power to crank up the engine as the older cars; this means that modern engines do not require as large a cranking amps as they used to and therefore is much less important as it used to be. However, vehicles including leisure vehicles are now fitted with power guzzling electric appliances that are more suited to using deep cycle batteries. Do not forget that the deep cycle can be totally drained and then re-charged and recover fully, but a car battery may not fully recover if totally discharged.

It will not hurt to fit Deep Cycle Batteries as a starter provided you up the amps.

If in doubt many companies now make a type of crossover battery called a leisure battery in different amps depending on how big the vehicle and amount of power the battery requires, this kind of battery is available online in Tungstone batteries and Lucas brands online at www.batteriesontheweb.co.uk. Another kind of car now uses the AGM battery, known as the Start-stop system. These cars are now getting very popular because they automatically stop and start when the car comes to a stop, this saves energy and pollution, and by 2016 a significant number of cars will be fitted with this system, using AGM batteries.

Battery Life-How Long Should Your Battery Last a few tips to look at

Battery Life

Battery Life; Deep cycle battery

The most obvious reason as to why and how long a 12 Volt Battery will last. Is the amount of usage that it will get. Also, other things that affect the longevity of a battery. Thus, are temperature and how the charge is maintained. They need to be kept at the correct temperature. Therefore, here in Northern Europe, we use batteries with a higher amp-age because of our cold climate and in the warmer regions of the World we need a lower amperage because the warmth does not need as much power to start the car. If they are used the wrong way round, then failure will-will be the result.

Battery Life

Battery Life; Battery construction

If a Battery Life suffers from severe overcharging. Then the Battery Life will not last a very long time. I have known overcharged batteries are only lasting a year or two, where a battery that has been charged at the correct charging rate may last up to eight years, we find that Japanese cars have the best electrical systems because of the quality of the electrical components that are of excellent quality. There can be a downside in the strength of the batteries coming here on cars from the Eastern countries, because of the warmer climates in these countries, cars can be fitted with a lower cold cranking amp battery.

Also one of the biggest mistakes that golfers make is to load a Gel with a regular type car charger. This does not work.Hence, is a common mistake when buying one for golf or mobility  you must keep to the correct charger for the right type of battery, this is the main reason for customers thinking that they have a faulty one here at www.batteriesontheweb.co.uk

Maintenance Free batteries-are now becoming the normal fitment on most cars and trucks

This is a short article about maintenance free batteries

The phrase maintenance free batteries is only partly correct.  What are Maintenance Free Battery vs Conventional  Cheap Car batteries , use up some of the water in their diluted mixture of sulphuric acid electrolyte during there every day cycle of charging and discharging. The electrolyte process turns into a gas mixture of oxygen and hydrogen and escapes from the battery. WE then add water to keep the battery topped up.

Maintenance Free batteries

Lucas Maintenance free batteries

Maintenance free batteries known as MF batteries use a different type of lead alloy. They use calcium alloy of lead and not a lead antimony alloy. This reduces the gassing therefore stops the need to keep topping up your battery. Indeed means that you have no need to top up your battery during the normal life of your  Battery.
The only problem can occur in exceptionally high temperatures where the Maintenance free batteries may boil but the newer types of MF battery now have pressure relief valves that come into operation when the pressure may get too high. For further reading…http://uk.ask.com/question/what-is-a-maintenance-free-battery

Altogether these Maintenance free batteries are becoming the normal standard for modern vehicle standards and are worth buying instead of cheap batteries.

Car batteries remained much the same, the only thing that changed was the different terminals and physical sizes of the batteries, battery plates, became a new mix of alloys and lead alloys and companies the likes of Lucas batteries became the first to introduce practically sealed batteries that were maintenance free, there were no screw tops on the battery for the driver to check the acid level.

Also there was the evolution of the cars. Many cars were now coming out on more sophisticated electrical systems. Which required car batteries with more power. We found that a difference in the old type battery and the new type of battery was that the new types of battery did not give you much time after failure, one morning the battery light would come on in your car and you would need a new battery, there and then; you do not have the time any more. It is very important to remember ,that the Maintenance free batteries must be stood up in the upright position. The battery caps do not unscrew and so the battery is classed as sealed. But it is important to remember that the battery is not leak proof.

Leisure Marine Batteries-New Style “Marine Batteries”-Sealed lead Acid and Deep Cycle.

Leisure Marine Batteries

Leisure Marine Batteries

Most Leisure Marine Batteries are now hybrids

So, most Leisure Marine Batteries that we buy today are “hybrids”. Consequently, they are a cross between the regular starter and the Deep Cycle Battery. Importantly, this new type of marine Battery is now of a high standard. AGM marine batteries are of course completely sealed. The batteries are fitted with special valves that release pressure that may build up. Especially, in the battery when it is overheating.

The Marines cells are made of a lead-sponge material . For this reason, this is usually made of thicker material than the lead sponge in a starter battery. This type of marine leisure batteries is used on smaller craft. Thus, that are used for pleasure boating. For this reason, for longer sailings especially for ocean-going vessels. Therefore, I think that the AGM,true deep-cycle batteries should be utilised.

Leisure Marine Batteries

Leisure Marine Batteries-Boat batteries wired up for marine batteries

We at  BatteriesOnTheWeb also sell marine ones with twin negative and twin positive posts. Enabling the boat owner to join other electrical items together. Of course, such as other electrical accessories.

Marine batteries are displayed in (Marine cranking amps) also known as MCA.

Marine batteries have calcium/calcium plates requiring no maintenance.

As I have stated. It ‘s hard to tell the difference between the two types of batteries. Because in general if it looks like a car type with the caps on the top to allow you to check the electrolyte levels, then it will be a standard car one. These batteries are marine batteries

The rest of the materials used such as the oxides and separator materials. For this reason, gives a much higher capacity.

These batteries are available online in Lucas and Pennine-Kingpower from www.batteriesontheweb.co.uk

eric roberts‘s insight:

Lithium-Ion Electric car batteries

This is news to me but possibly good news, I wonder if in the future the battery market will be like it is today. With many manufacturers selling to many dealers as a World wide

Nissan Leaf Batteries

Hydrogen cells are one of the competitors to the Nissan Leaf Batteries lithium-Ion cars of the future

market, or will the car makers try to keep the cheapest car batteries to themselves.

Certainly according to this report the customers want to buy their own Nissan Leaf Batteries and source them at the best price when they need replacing, at the moment i can not think past the post and can not imagine what the size of the battery market will be  when the cars become second and third hand.

At the moment we have a vibrant battery market, with many companies large and small having a share in the market ,but will this always be the case ?. Lithium-Ion batteries are now looking like the battery that will be used as the Nissan Leaf Batteries , along with other technologies, such as Hydrogen fuel calls. Another big development is with the Start-Stop car battery. You may ask How Does Stop Start Work?. This operates on the what you could call standard type vehicles and works by the cars engine being switched off when the car stop and re-starting when the car starts again saving fuel in the process. These batteries are 12 Volt Battery technology and are lead acid batteries and AGM batteries, this is because of the higher charging cycles that are available with different materials used in the making of the plates.
