Toyo tyres

Toyo have always been one of my favorite tyre companies to deal with. Most of the time over the past 30 years Toyo have been a big supplier of small independent tyre companies such as my own company here in Halifax UK. But like most other tyre companies toyo decided to go down the tyre wholesaler route , to sell their products, thus cutting out us retailers, we also had an option to buy direct, but the tyres became available to anyone to sell and toyo became just another cheap car tyre on the market. The outcome is that retailers stopped sellintoyo tyres  .

Naturally, going onto to sell other similar products, such as General Tyres. We now use Yokohama tyres and Apollo tyres in there place, although Toyo are still a good product and if their policy ever changed, i would take them on board again,”what goes around, comes around” as the saying goes.

Toyo tyres are today still supporting the F1600 race series with their tyre products. Zacharie Robichon is still a prominent contestant.

Punctured Tyre-Lady Drove over 20 Miles on a flat TYRE ?

Complete side wall ripped off ?

Female Customer Drove over 20 mile on this Punctured Tyre ?

This is one of the strangest stories I have heard in the past two years. A lady customer called in to claim that she had a service done

Punctured Tyre

This Continental tyre although shredded to bits was driven on by a lady customer for twenty miles?wow

to her Audi estate about a month ago, and the car was now acting very strangely. She said that when the car was going round the bend she could feel it swaying slightly, but it was steering perfectly normal on the straight roads. We asked her how long the car had been doing this and she said that for a couple of days or about twenty miles. We went to put the Audi on the ramp, but noticed the car was sloping to one side ?.

When we checked ,she had a tyre that was completely ripped off on one of the side walls.

This Punctured Tyre had in fact been driving with the same characters as Continental Run Flat Tyres, for more than twenty miles. The lady customer had not suspected anything because the car had not swerved violently or even veered from side to side, as you might expect from a big car such as the Audi estate.

The Punctured Tyre is the one shown in this blog and the ripped off side-wall can be easily seen. Credit should also be given to the Continental Sports Contact that took the battering, although not a run-flat it did remarkably well.

So to follow up on this ! Have you noticed all the old tyre treads and pieces of rubber tyre treads ! That are present on the side of the roads and motorways. Especially car tyre treads.

Michelin Tweel Tyre Development- Similar to Tyre Used on Citroën Hybrid Air

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

Michelin Tweel Tyre Development

When I first saw this post i thought that the prototype Michelin tyre called the Michelin Tweel Tyre. Consequently which had been developed for real time use.  But looking at this I think not.

The new tyre is tall and narrow 165/50 x 18 will be the size used. This will make the tyre much more dynamic with far less rolling resistance. So, it will be like going back in time 50 years to Michelin’s first radials. They would have been 125 x 400 milimetric size (tall and thin). You know what they say “what comes round goes round”.

It was back in 2005 when the French tyre company first announced the arrival of the Michelin Tweel Tyre . To me it just looks like a light weight solid fork truck wheel with a wheel that has a solid rubber welded to the wheel on the outside. It could also be said to look like the old fashioned horse cart wheel, with the spokes fixed to a hub that is connected to the axle. The spokes then fit to the outer wheel, which is fitted with a rubber band.

The difference is in the materials that Michelin Tweel have used.

The same as the cart wheel. Traditionally, a solid inner hub mounts to the axle. Similar to a normal spokes alloy wheel. From this is another set of spokes that connect to the outer rim, the same as a cart wheel. These spokes are incredibly strong and are the things that replace the air pressure in a conventional tyre. The outer part of the Michelin Tweel Tyre rim is connected with a band of rubber with a tread pattern.

The second spokes that absorb all the impacts and bumps and respond to the cars steering are made from polyurethane and are incredibly strong. The French Company say that these spokes can be made of different strength and tensions, to enable the Michelin Tweel Tyre to be fitted to different vehicles of different weights and physical size, to help improve the handling, much in the same way as a conventional tyre and wheel assembly does at the moment. As I have said earlier in my article these Michelin Tweel Tyre do look like a mixture of the old cart wheels and modern alloy wheels and tyres and in my opinion area very clever concept.

Michelin have said that the Tweels have been tried and tested on an Audi A4

Naturally, giving the car much more lateral stiffness than the conventional wheel and tyre set up. In my opinion Michelin are a massive tyre company and I cannot see them giving up their core business, to make things like this, but I do think that the Tweel may be part of a big mix of technologies in the future.

Michelin Tyres Development-Set their Targets High as far back as the Thirties

It is no surprise to the older drivers amongst us that Michelin Tyres Development has always been at the forefront of tyre design

Michelin Tyres Development

This early Citroen ran on the Michelin Tyres Development XAS tyres

Ever since I started work as a junior tyre fitter all those years ago. So, I have marveled at the skill and professional work that Michelin Tyres Development  have put into their products. Even going back before my time ! French tyre makers were at the top of tyre development.Subsequently, all the other tyre companies were playing catch-up.

Enter the first steel belted radial that started it all off for Michelin tyres.

This was to be the tyre that changed their history. Including the great American tyre makers of the time. Of course, this new tyre from Michelin tyres was to be a far cry from the cross ply. Significantly, made by most other European tyre companies . Including, the Bias-belted tyres that were been developed in the USA.

The new Michelin Tyres Development was to be known as the Michelin”X”. Consequently, first appearing in 1949 (a year after I was born). This tyre would revolutionize the tyre industry ! With a product that would last longer and prove better car handling. Especially, for the type of suspension that was used on European cars.

This tyre was to be fitted as original equipment to Lancia and Citroen cars and also to the Mercedes 190 SL models.

It took a good ten years before the other tyre makers started to catch Michelin Tyres Development up, all trying to copy the steel belted “X” tyre.

Compared to the cross-ply tyre the radial gave many advantages. They  gave a much better mileage and road holding, ( I must admit that when I was in my early tyre fitting days, I can remember drivers complaining about Michelin  being bad in wet weather ?), This also gave added bonus of lower fuel consumption, a great

Michelin Tyres Development

The original Michelin Tyres Development x tyres

bonus for some of those old gas guzzling cars.

This is also the same time that imported cars were coming into the UK cars such as the Citroen 2 CV and Renault Dauphins.

More reading... “The Dauphine took over from the 4 CV in 1956, but not as a replacement. The name dauphine (heiress) was highly significant. Release was a major event on the motoring scene, and followed up by a successful career on French and export markets.

Dauphine played its successor’s role to the full, boasting all the latest features of the epoch, such as adjustable seats, heating, and an automatic gearbox. The finish was very smart, with a red and black steering wheel and matching seats. The dashboard layout was uncluttered, and the interior roomy.

Dauphine was a four-seater, with rear bench and two separate seats at the front. In January 1957, the US motoring weekly The Motor crowned it the “prettiest little four-seater in the world”. Sure, it was beautiful, elegant and shapely, totally in keeping with spirit of the 1960s.”…http://www.renault.com/en/vehicules/hier/pages/renault-dauphine.aspx

The Dauphin did not do too well in the “Cold Damp British climate”

So, soon had a bad reputation for bad rust, but it did come out on Michelin tyres, and I will never forget the first time I had to remove one of these products  from the rim. The tyre just fell off the wheel it was so easy to do, a big improvement on the struggle we had when fitting Dunlops . In those days we only had a hand held tyre bead breaker and some tyre levers, balancing was carried out on a small “bubble” wheel  balancer which I still believe never really worked.

To conclude Michelin Tyres Development have never looked back and in the early days because of their better cornering they were used in the early motor-sport cars with great success.

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

Terrific Tyres Prove The Point ?

This is a great time of my life to be involved in the motor industry. Hardly a day goes by without some sort of new invention or improvements to the products that are been developed and no more so than in the tyre industry. All these developments are in my opinion due to to improvements in computer designs helping tyre developers to create new products out of new materials to help with the relentless charge towards lowering greenhouse gasses.

These new EfficientGrip Fuel Savers were tested by Autocar Magazineusing

Significantly, using a Citroen Picasso as the test car. Including, using the Goodyear Fuel Savers Efficient Grip tyres. Consequently, the test were carried out over a long period of time. Of course, using normal driving conditions on normal roads and not on test tracks. So, to enable a true and realistic result. The Picasso was a bog standard car and came up with a saving of 2% over the total period of testing. Naturally, a significant achievement from Goodyear Fuel Savers. Reducing both fuel consumption and reducing greenhouse gasses.

Other tyre companies developing new products

Most companies in this sector are developing newer products that are more beneficial to the environment.Michelin and Continental are both producing greener products with far better rolling resistance figures, helping the vehicles go further with less resistance between the tyre and the road thus reducing fuel consumption.

Continental Tyre Advice- That Warn You Of Vehicle Overloading your car tyres.

Continental Tyre Advice

Conti Car Tyres has been stepping up its line of products as it already delivers tyres which are equipped with a sensor that tells the user just how much…

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

New Tyre Advice just one of things to come?

Now that we will all be using TPMS systems in the future . So, it comes as no surprise that other gadgets will be developed.Naturally, to aid the motorist. Hence, in the constant drive for more road safety on our cars.

This new device from Conti will be no exception. Significantly, will tell the driver if the car is overloaded or not. Overloading is one of the main dangers associated with the cars handling. Of course, this can be very dangerous when cornering with an overloaded car.

No doubt there will be many more gadgets coming through in the years to come. Thus, to aid drivers probably on German cars such as the BMW’s and Mercs. Working in conjunction with the German tyre giant  Tyre Advice professionals . These devices will also become more common on vehicles such as caravans and motor-homes. So, as they will warn the driver of any loss of air pressure, thus resulting in a safer journey.

Wheel balancing Facts-Car Drivers are still not sure What WHEEL BALANCING IS ?

Wheel balancing Facts

Wheel balancing Facts; in the beginning?

Wheel balancing Facts When I first started working in the tyre trade. Then, wheel balancing was not as important . Especially, on the old x ply tyres on slowly driven cars. Hence, as it is on today’s fast cars driving on the fast highways. For this reason, we used to spend hours trying to balance Jaguar wheels. Thus, on old “spirit level” wheel balancers. In times gone by the Jaguar was about the fastest British car out . Consequently, Jaguars came out on Dunlop tyres . This was a textile radial the size was Er70Vr x15.

The problem was that Dunlop could not get the tyre to balance correctly. Therefore, all the tyres had to go back to Dunlop to be skimmed on a special machine. Thus, to make the tyres circumference what you may call “round”. As I have said, a special machine had to be made to perform this. For this reason, all Jaguar wheels were done in this way.
Nowadays we used very sophisticated machinery. Exclusively, to perform the wheel balancing. Moreover, these machines are computerised and very accurate. Pinpointing the exact place where the weight should be attached.

It is now very rare that a wheel would need re-balancing. Even more, once the new tyre was fitted and the wheel balancing was done. For this reason, we have all experienced the  vibration of their wheels. Especially, wheels that say, looses a weight. Balancing,  also causes problems with your suspension and steering parts. Apart from annoying the driver. Therefore, it is important that you get the wheels balanced again. Preferably, as soon as possible.

Wheel balancing “wobble” is very distinctive

The vibration or wobble caused by an out of balance wheel is easy to identify. Your car will drive normally until a certain speed is reached , balancing Facts say 50 mph and start to vibrate through your hands on the steering wheel, the car will normally drive through this to say 60 mph and then feel perfectly normal, this is your wheels that are out of balance.

Sometimes the facts state that vibration comes through your seat, this is usually your rear wheels that are out of balance, most other things that can vibrate on your car such as faulty brakes, will be a more violent vibration and will start at low speeds and be very noisy , if this happens stop your car a seek some advice from a skilled engineer or your nearest Auto-centre.
To summarise  balancing Facts can cause your tyres to wear prematurely and also feels uncomfortable when driving any good Tyre centre will correct the problem in half an hour and have you on your way in no time.

Caravan Tyre Checking-May has arrived and brought warm sunshine to the UK Tyre Checking time again

Caravan Tyre Checking

Caravan Tyre Checking-Good Information about the Correct Tyre Procedures.

Your caravan tyre pressures should always be checked and adjusted when the tyres are cold before the caravan season and before every journey.

In fact, Eric Roberts owner of Pellon Tyre and Auto Centre in West Yorkshire. Recommends that owner of a trailer and Touring Caravans should remove the entire wheel or wheels and tyres and take them to their favourite garage or auto centre and have them checked by a professional member of the team, this will ensure the safest possible outcome.

Therefore, and checked for internal cuts and damage. This is most important as unseen damage can become a nightmare scenario when going down a motorway at sixty mile per hour and losing complete control due to tyre failure.

The tyre dealer will then check the outside of the for damage to the tread area and the sidewalls for cuts and cracks

Cracks start to form around the rim area. Hence, due to the tyres been stood in the Sun.Thus, for long hours during the Summer months. Eventually, the carbon black, that is used in the manufacture of the tyre. For this reason, begins to break down. Naturally, small but deep cracks start to form around the rim area.Eventually join up to create a very dangerous hazard. Indeed this is one of the most common cause for tyre blowouts on your caravan or Car Trailers.

Any tyres with cracks and cuts should be scrapped and replaced with a new tyre .Finally, if everything is fine, the pressures and tyre valves should be checked to the correct loading for your caravan and trailer.

Caravan Tyre Checking

Caravan Tyre Checking-having his tyres checked before spring

Another important Caravan Tyre Checking point. Is to have the vehicle loading checked on your tyres. Thus,to make sure that the tyres conform to your caravan or trailers recommended weight carrying capacity. Some of the larger heavier vehicles. Require more heavy duty tyres. Thus, to take the additional loading; your tyre dealer will advise you on the correct fitments by recommending you fit stronger ply rated tyres.

Finally, to sum up. You should have your Caravan Tyres Checked by an expert. So try to stick to new tyres if possible. Load your vehicle and trailing vehicle evenly. Thus, to give a more even weight distribution across the axle. Therefore, make sure that your tyres have the correct load rating.Especially, for the loaded weight of your caravan or motorhome. Also, important to fix yourself up with a spare wheel. Hence, that has a tyre to match the ones you have on the vehicle. Most of this is common sense. But we still see piles of wood from crashed caravans on the side of our roads.Especially, in the summertime.

Part Worn Tyres Expensive – “You DO NOT SAVE YOU MONEY in the long run”

Post Updated 19th Dec 2013

Part Worn Tyres Expensive-Proof that part worn tyres work out more expensive in the long run

Most tyre experts and motoring organisations are very concerned about the amount of part worn tyres are now fitted here in the UK. The latest motoring organisation to voice their opinion is the very respectful Motorcodes, of which we at Pellon tyres are members (and proud to be so).

These Part Worn Tyres Expensive are generally imported from countries such as Germany, where tyres are generally removed at 3 mil. These Part Worn Tyres Expensive look fine from the outside but there is no saying what Part Worn Tyres Expensivedamage lies under the surface of the tread and could be very dangerous indeed. We are effectively buying old tyres from Germany, the tyres that the Germans throw away as no good any more, I cant believe that we would do such a thing. Part Worn Tyres Expensive also offer a danger to other motorists on the road, they put other drivers at risk because people think they are saving money.

In 1994 part worn tyres came under a law called the “Motor Vehicle Tyres Safety Regulations”, these regulations were to ensure that part worn tyres were properly tested and labelled as such, if people buy tyres that have been tested then this is deemed as ok and suitable for the use on roads, but the Part Worn Tyres Expensive we have come across do not appear to have any checks on them and no label. All part worn tyres must be labelled as such. They must have the words ‘PART- WORN’ marked in capital letters. This must be permanent and legible. (I think this is to give other road users the chance to get out of the way

Many more part worn tyres are now sold because of the economic recession. A recent excellent survey regarding how cheap a part worn tyre really is has been studied and written by a tyre industry expert Stuart Carr. I have posted a link to Stuarts blog and I hope you will click to see that

part worn tyres cost “MORE” than new tyres in the long run in real terms

To finalise any garage that are in Motorcodes will not endorse the sale of part worn tyres.
