The reform was all about setting new rules to take into account the intensity of competition on the markets for the distribution of motor vehicles and spare parts. Also for the provision of repair and maintenance services. It covers cars, trucks and buses, and all types of garage small or large.

The Commission found that competition in the market for the sale of new vehicles is strong. In this light, the current sector-specific rules create an unnecessary straitjacket that prevents

car manufacturers from organising their distribution systems as they see fit. The European Commission has therefore aligned the rules applicable to motor vehicle distribution. This applies with those that apply to distribution agreements in other sectors but with a three-year transition period to allow dealers to adapt to the new measures.

Competition on the markets for repair and maintenance and for spare parts distribution is less intense. This is a risk to consumers who may be harmed by anti-competitive practices. This could push up Car Repair Costs when Servicing a Car. The garage Repair and maintenance industry is very important for consumers. Not only for reasons of safety and reliability. But also because repair bills account for 40% of the total cost to car owners. Unlike car prices, the cost of the average repair job and  servicing has actually risen over the past years.

Consumers are feeling the effect of rising repair bills. This also includes  servicing costs during the present crisis. They are more price-sensitive and drive older vehicles that require more regular maintenance. The EU Commission has put in place a tougher regime for these markets. They will make it easier to enforce the rules. Particular problematic issues include holding back technical information and not releasing spare parts, and refusing to honour warranties when consumers have their cars repaired at independent garage servicing facilities.

Independent garages and repairers such as Pellonautocentre are important because they give more choice to consumers. New rules will assure that garage servicing companies have access to technical information for models which are type-approved after 1 September 2009. By making a clear link with the 2007 car type-approvals Regulation. The EU Commission will ensure both consistency as regards access to technical information. For cars put in circulation before that date and allow the presentation of technical information to evolve and continue in line with technical progress.

The EU Commission remains committed to vigorously enforce the rules on access to technical information. This was demonstrated in four cases brought in 2007. This was to ensure that car manufacturers disclose the necessary information to independent repairers and garage servicing facilities. The EU Commission will constantly monitor the situation in the markets for motor vehicle and spare parts distribution, as well as in the market for the provision of repair and maintenance services including garage servicing companies. The EU Commission will also monitor the application of the Regulation, in cooperation with National Competition Authorities and stakeholders. Once again the UK garage and motor industry can continue to work hard and give the public the service and competitive pricing they deserve.

Your TYRE wear should be checked once a week

Most ladies are not sure about checking  there tyres for wear. Come to think of it , neither do most men. So.the easiest way is to call into your local tyre and auto centre. of course, they would be only too pleased to check them for you.

You must look for premature uneven tyre wear. This is usually the first sign of a problem with your steering geometry. Consequently, could even indicate a major problem with the cars steering and, or suspension. Naturally, the first sign is that you will see a bald area appearing at the inside or the outside of your front tyres.

So, if you do notice that the tyre is wearing off at one side. Of course, it is important that you have your wheel alignment checked and adjusted.

If your tyre is wearing at the centre then you are running you tyres with too much pressure. For this reason, this needs to be adjusted. With the attention to making sure that  the correct pressure used for your model of car. Some cars nowadays have fall our wheels aligned, this means that the cars rear as well as front wheels may need adjusting, this is particularly common on the modern SUV type vehicles and 4x4s. This regular visual checking will also save you money as a new tyre for these types of vehicles will cost you well over £120 these days ,.

The UK authorities that regulate garage services and repairs here in the UK.Thus, have at last come up with a better way to control bad practice throughout the UK motor industry.Many systems were implicated in trying to regulate garage services.Including, repairers and car sales outlets for un- lawful practices. But this did not stop dodgy traders from breaking the rules. We have all had to cut back in these difficult times but to cut back on buying a car tyre will put the vehicle owner and other motorists in great danger, especially with the weather turning wetter as we go towards September and Autumn and Winter approaches.

The combination of wet roads and bald tyres makes for an accident waiting to happen. The name for this is AQUAPLANING; This is when your tyre is separated from the road surface by a thin layer of water. Therefore, your tyre does not grip.

Because of the absence of tread on the tyre. Then the car can go in any direction when the brakes are applied. Hence, this is the cause of many motorway crashes.Of course,  you may have also seen F1 cars during a race. Because in dry weather conditions, the racing cars are equipped with bald tyres (called slicks). Accordingly, when the weather turns wet, the cars are replaced with tyres that have a tread pattern. Thus the same principals apply for the regular car owner. Therefore, it is highly dangerous to drive on a “BALD” tyre,  and also illegal.

A more pessimistic scenario has recently developed. We are now removing tyres from customers cars. That have gone past the “BALD” stage. Hence,  down to the “STEEL BELT”. Hi while I was on holiday in France recently I came across this wonderful, well kept Bentley in the car park of a French supermarket in a town called Ruffec. Its owner was a short very well dressed and dapper guy who really looked the kind of guy to drive such a car.

The car was fitted with a set of full side-wall white -wall tyres. A great sight that I have not seen for years. I could see if they were the real thing or just inserts. Most of all they really set the car off, I could have looked but I did not want to be too nosy in the middle of a supermarket car park.

The new Pirelli design leads to the creation of the Pirelli Cinturato. This tyre was created in the 1950s.Therefore, and was originally made from a textile belted construction. This tyre gave great comfort and road holding qualities but as for all textile construction tyres was a little low on mileage and could not compete with some of its rivals namely Michelin who were streets ahead with their steel belted X range of tyres.

Eric Roberts remembers fitting these Pirelli Cinturato tyres in the 1960 s. Eric, was a tyre fitter in Dewsbury. These tyres were mounted on Lancias and for some strange reason were fitted to some MGBs.

The earlier Pirelli Cinturato were used as original equipment on most Italian-made production cars such as the Alfas;

Eric remembers the first time he saw these tyres. They were very unusual at the time.Hence, but things were changing fast in the world of tyres. and we were not that surprised at what came along next”. Thus, the most common size been the 165×14. Pirelli now competes on the World stage with the steel belted radial fitted to modern cars.
