But they do not see that having those MOT tests, . Actually help prevent accidents and cut down on road deaths by keeping badly maintained vehicles off the road.

By carrying out an MOT test every year on vehicles that have been on the road for three years from their first registration, VOSA has successfully managed to lower the number of unsatisfactory cars on the road, making things safe for the rest of us.

Wheel balancing Facts-Car Drivers are still not sure What WHEEL BALANCING IS ?

Wheel balancing Facts

Wheel balancing Facts; in the beginning?

Wheel balancing Facts When I first started working in the tyre trade. Then, wheel balancing was not as important . Especially, on the old x ply tyres on slowly driven cars. Hence, as it is on today’s fast cars driving on the fast highways. For this reason, we used to spend hours trying to balance Jaguar wheels. Thus, on old “spirit level” wheel balancers. In times gone by the Jaguar was about the fastest British car out . Consequently, Jaguars came out on Dunlop tyres . This was a textile radial the size was Er70Vr x15.

The problem was that Dunlop could not get the tyre to balance correctly. Therefore, all the tyres had to go back to Dunlop to be skimmed on a special machine. Thus, to make the tyres circumference what you may call “round”. As I have said, a special machine had to be made to perform this. For this reason, all Jaguar wheels were done in this way.
Nowadays we used very sophisticated machinery. Exclusively, to perform the wheel balancing. Moreover, these machines are computerised and very accurate. Pinpointing the exact place where the weight should be attached.

It is now very rare that a wheel would need re-balancing. Even more, once the new tyre was fitted and the wheel balancing was done. For this reason, we have all experienced the  vibration of their wheels. Especially, wheels that say, looses a weight. Balancing,  also causes problems with your suspension and steering parts. Apart from annoying the driver. Therefore, it is important that you get the wheels balanced again. Preferably, as soon as possible.

Wheel balancing “wobble” is very distinctive

The vibration or wobble caused by an out of balance wheel is easy to identify. Your car will drive normally until a certain speed is reached , balancing Facts say 50 mph and start to vibrate through your hands on the steering wheel, the car will normally drive through this to say 60 mph and then feel perfectly normal, this is your wheels that are out of balance.

Sometimes the facts state that vibration comes through your seat, this is usually your rear wheels that are out of balance, most other things that can vibrate on your car such as faulty brakes, will be a more violent vibration and will start at low speeds and be very noisy , if this happens stop your car a seek some advice from a skilled engineer or your nearest Auto-centre.
To summarise  balancing Facts can cause your tyres to wear prematurely and also feels uncomfortable when driving any good Tyre centre will correct the problem in half an hour and have you on your way in no time.

Basic Automotive care-and Other Important Car Care Tips

Basic Automotive care

Basic Automotive care;Owning a car or truck carries with it the responsibility of ownership.

If you want your vehicle to give you years of hassle-free service, it will be necessary to provide Basic Automotive care and routine maintenance and upkeep to keep it running well. Otherwise, your car could leave you stranded at the most inopportune moments. That is why it is important to buy cars from verified and quality car dealers such as Carzoos if you want to

Basic Automotive care

Basic Automotive care;Topping up your oil should be a regular maintenance job

avoid frequent repairs.

For starters, ensure your car has the proper amount of oil in it at all times, which is a Basic Automotive care . On the engine is a stick with a ring or handle on it with an oil can displayed on it. Check your oil routinely by removing the dipstick. The dipstick can be found as a handle along the top of the engine with an “oil can” picture. Remove the dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert into the tube and remove again to check the oil level. If it’s low, add a quart of oil to the engine, usually another cap that says “OIL” on it, most of the time it can be found on top of the engine itself. Your oil should be changed every 3500 to 5000 miles to keep your engine running efficiently.

Another Basic Automotive care, is Checking your coolant system, while cool, will also keep your car running great. The temperature gauge on your dash board will usually tell you if you have a cooling system problem. Most engines are designed to run below 210 degrees F, anything over that is considered overheating. You can add coolant or water to your system using the overflow tank in the engine compartment, but only when it’s cool. Beyond adding coolant, if you are experiencing engine overheating, go to your local mechanic. There are four possible causes of engine overheating-a bad water pump, a bad radiator, a bad thermostat or a ruptured hose along the cooling system path. The replacement of the water pump and radiator are expensive but it’s usually a once every 150,000 miles replacement. Some cars happen sooner, some happen later, but they all will have it happen.

Basic Automotive care

Tires are good for 40,000 to 50,000 miles before they need replacement. But checking the air pressure periodically is vital. Each tire will have a recommended pressure on the tyre itself. Purchase a tire gauge at the local auto parts store or big box store and check your tyre pressure. Most convenience stores have an air pressure machine that will allow you to fill your tyres for a fee, once again an important piece of Basic Automotive care . You can also swing by a local tire shop or garage and most will check your air pressure for free. When your tires begin to lose their tread or become bald, it’s time to purchase new tires. Once you have purchased these tires, have a maintenance plan in place to rotate and re-balance every 10,000 miles or so. This will ensure the longest life from your tires.

Basic Automotive care

Basic Automotive care

Brakes are also an important part of Basic Automotive care . While you cannot routinely maintain your brakes, you can prevent unneeded repairs by taking your car to an automotive shop when you first hear that brake squeal. That squeal is the brake wear indicators telling you that your brake pads need to be replaced. If you continue to wait and ignore the brake wear indicators, you will have the additional cost of replacing the rotors(discs)as well. If identified early enough, your rotors can be placed on a machine and resurfaced instead of having to be replaced.

Basic Automotive care

These are just a few Basic Automotive care parts of the routine maintenance items you can check for yourself to keep your car in good working order. Finding a mechanic you can trust is also an important factor as well. Seek out recommendations from friends and colleagues for a quality mechanic to help guide you through your car maintenance issues.

Uniroyal Tyres- Now under the same banner as Continental and General Tyres

Uniroyal Tyres

Uniroyal tyres in Leeds , UK

My first dealings with the Uniroyal and General tyres brand was in the late sixties. Hence, Uniroyal Tyres had joined into a partnership with Englebert tyres. Of Liege in Belgium. Belgium seemed like a million miles away in the sixties.Of course, we had seen some experience with the Englebert brand.Because of the singer Englebert Humperdinck.Who was always in the music charts in those days. So, we used to call these tyres after the singer.uniroyal tyres

After the amalgamation. The brand became Uniroyal Englebert Deutschland AG. Thus, this came about in 1963. After a few years using that name. Then the brand became just Uniroyal in 1966.Hence, the year when England won the World cup at soccer.Naturally, well remembered by us oldies.

Uniroyal tyres carried on trading well into the 1970’s.Consequently, when they were sold to Continental tyres in 1979. Who began to make the tyres in its different European factories. As a result, including Scotland here in the UK.

One of the most advertised tyre products. Was in fact Uniroyal. We probably all remember the TV adds with an Orangutan. Thus, holding up an umbrella in the rain. For this reason, naming the tyre “The rain tyre”. Because, it was good in the wet weather. This name has still stuck.Hence, with the Uniroyal tyre brand. Naturally, and indeed we at Pellon tyres in Halifax UK are still selling this famous tyre. Which is still remaining a popular tyre brand for our customers.

The tyre brand that helped Uniroyal tyres to become a household name was the “Rally 180”

Also known as the rain tyre.Because of the umbrella symbol on the side wall. In 1991 Uniroyal tyres were the first company to bring out a directional tread design . The RTT-1 tyre. This design was copied by many other tyre companies. Therefore, proved to be very successful for motorists .

Winter tyres were also becoming more popular, with more and more European motorists driving to the ski slopes and Uniroyal did not miss out on an opportunity, bringing out the MS plus 44 winter tyre. This winter tyre became a test winner in many of the motoring magazine tyre tests, and consequently became very popular in the main ski countries such as France and Germany.

In 2007 Uniroyal brought out the “Rally 550” tyre which became a “Best buy”in many of the consumer magazines of the time and in 2008 Uniroyal tyres introduced the very good “Uniroyal Rainsport 2” updated by the Uniroyal Rain Sport 3 that we sell today.

Cracked Alloy Wheels-Now becoming a big problem? Can You Repair Damaged Alloy Wheels ?

Post Updated 2nd Jan 2014

Cracked Alloy Wheels;Yes you can repair alloy wheels

Cracked Alloy Wheels; Here at Pellon tyres we are witnessing many of our customers who are having problems with Cracked Alloy Wheels. One of the things that I have invested in, in recent times are new tyre fitting machines that make the fitting of tyres to alloy wheels much easier , with less chances of damaging or scratching the wheels. In fact we had a customer in last Saturday for a new tyre fitting in a new Bentley with wheels worth over £600 each. We actually did a puncture for him and a perfect job to boot, (no scratches thank Goodness).

Cracked Alloy Wheels

Cracked Alloy Wheels;very expensive Bentley alloy wheels(not for scratching)

For the past 6 or 7 years, car manufacturers have been replacing their standard steel wheels with larger alloy wheels to help them sell the new cars with “free added extras”. It is easy to see why alloy wheels have become so popular. Not only do they provide a better ride than steel wheels, but also they look much better and allow the manufacturers to make bigger and wider wheels to fit bigger and wider tyres. This trend has enabled manufacturers to give their new cars and SUVs, a better more attractive look. Another plus side is that alloy wheels are much lighter in weight than steel wheels and help in the quest for more fuel efficient greener cars.

Unfortunately, alloy wheels come with a down side,(although they are very strong they break easily with the weight of the heavy cars). While they do look great and run smoothly, they are also made of softer and less durable material than steel wheels. Some alloys also come in two or more parts as well, split wheels can make the problem worse. Alloys can be damaged easily, and replacement wheels can be very expensive, and in some cars you can not find a matching wheel and may have to buy 4 new wheels. Replacing  Cracked Alloy Wheels may be the safest but most expensive option to the problem, but why would you want to replace a wheel that is only slightly damaged, the bottom line is is that Cracked Alloy Wheels can be repaired, and a repair will always be the cheaper option other than a replacement wheel.

Many of our customers think that Cracked Alloy Wheels can simply be bent back into place with a hammer, but it isn’t that simple. Fortunately, we know a team of experts that are skilled at safely repairing a damaged wheel that will remove even unnoticeable cracks or other weak spots. The wheel is mounted on a special device, and heat, pressure and gentle vibrations are applied to the wheel making the alloy go back into place, without cracking. The wheel goes back to its original state once the repaired wheel cools. The wheel is then washed thoroughly, cleaning off all brake dust and dirty particles that may be trapped in the wheels minute cracks and crevices.

Cracked Alloy Wheels

Cracked Alloy Wheels;A “crack” common on some BMW alloy wheels

Can alloy wheels be welded ?

The simple answer is if the crack is not too big it can be welded by a specialist welder using special alloy welding equipment, it is something that we at Pellon tyres pass on to the experts. We do offer the service to our customers and most of them have the crack welded. We also offer a complete alloy wheels overhaul at a reasonable price, about half the price of buying new wheels and the effect is astounding in fact, they just look like new wheels when they are re-furbished.

Check-Tyres Pressures before that journey-Easter Holidays are coming up ?

Check-Tyres Pressures

Post Updated 1st Jan 2014

Check-Tyres Pressures even before a short trip

It is very important that your car’s tyres should have just the correct amount of air pressure. This to some people will not seem to be a big deal, but, remember that your tyres are extremely important when it comes to the importance of the cars total performance. Cars are now becoming more powerful and faster, withtyre companiesand car companies working hand in hand to create more environmentally friendly products, including greener tyres that are much lighter and more responsive to changes in the air pressure that you put in your tyres.Pirelli tyres have brought out a new range of green tyres

According to car experts, and car manuals your car’s tyres should have the right amount of pressure because the air inside the tyre is the only thing between you, your car, and the road surface. If you do have under inflated or over inflated tyres, you will be experiencing many rattles and shakes as you drive along on various types of road surfaces. Under inflated tyres also cause your car to swerve when cornering and give a certain feeling of unease when driving along, your car will move from side to side when on a straight road, and over steer on bends, an uncomfortable feeling in general. Tyres that are over inflated will have a very hard ride, and you will feel every single bump and pot hole that you drive over.
Another fact about tyres is that when they are over inflated or under inflated, is that your car will use much more fuel, especially on the larger models of cars such as BMW or Mercedes. When your cars tyre pressures are at the correct reading as stipulated by the car manufacturers, then your car will be completely safe and use the correct amount of fuel, remember what I said about tyres becoming greener?.

When checking your tyres pressures,

Check-Tyres Pressures

Check-Tyres Pressures;Lady checking her tyre pressures

Make sure that you do it when your tyres have cooled down. Bear in mind that tyres get more inflated when they are warm and the air inside the tyre expands.

You should first remove the cap from the valve on the wheel that you are checking the tyre pressure on. Put in and fit the tyre gauge hard into the valve and then take a look at the reading. Most motorists know how to inflate there own tyres but if in doubt you can visit your local Unipart Car Care Centre (UCCC)where trained staff will do the job for you free of charge.

Goodyear Tyres Early Days-How things were In the nineties.

Goodyear Tyres Early Days

Goodyear Tyres Early Days- no longer number one in 1990.

So, in 1990 the French company Michelin tyres. Bought out another tyre company called BF Goodrich tyres of America. This was a good acquisition for Michelin because Goodrich had previously merged with Uniroyal tyres. So making a massive tyre manufacturing conglomerate.

of course, in Goodyear tyres early days. Consequently, Firestone tyres and General tyres had suffered declining sales volumes. Subsequently, at the hand of Goodyear tyres dominance. Especially, in the radial tyre market. Firestone were taken over by Bridgestone tyres of Japan.

GOODYEAR TYRES Early Days

The famous Goodyear Eagle emblem

General  were bought out by Continental  of Germany.

Due these amalgamations. These bigger companies had now grown into the same size as Goodyear tyres. So,  having an impact on Goodyears sales. Goodyear, had their fingers in other non-tyre ventures. Including the “All American Pipeline”. This company was producing operational losses and was costing Goodyear over $3 billion of debt. However, Goodyear tyres were slow to react and make changes . Resulting in the appointment of a Mr C Gault as chairman of the company.

Goodyear tyres were now suffering. Consequently, between 1989 and 1991 they shed over 12000 jobs, 10% of its workforce. Redundancies came mainly from the white collar section of the workforce. The giant tyre company also set about restructuring its factories with some closures and others being modified, this reconstruction of the company was estimated to save Goodyear tyres over $250 million a year in savings.

Goodyear tyres believed adamantly in the research and development programs

Of course, they kept up the spending on new tyre development. Something that GOODYEAR TYRES  were very passionate about. The company started to bring out new products on the back of these new developments. Passionately, new tyres began to emerge. First ones been the The Goodyear Eagle GT and the Eagle GA. I remember these tyre well, they were modeled for the more luxury cars in the early nineties. These new products helped Goodyear tyres to regain the market share that they lost to the Michelin group and in 1992 they restructured their debts to a more manageable amount of around $1.5 billion.

Another great new tyre to come out of Goodyear tyres in the early nineties

Of course, was the “Aqua tread”, which was an all season tyre sold around the World and will be remembered by older drivers. The new tyre was launched simultaneously across the globe. I remember attending the Goodyear tyres launch on their test track in Luxembourg and the tyre became a huge success.GOODYEAR TYRES Early Days

car servicing Halifax

Car Servicing Halifax-There are different types of car maintenance?

Car Servicing Halifax

Cars are just pieces of machinery and need Car Servicing Halifax

Car Servicing Halifax

Car Servicing Halifax

Modern cars, are just like any other piece of machinery. Require regular maintenance. So, if your car is neglected. Consequently, it will become worn and tired and will eventually stop working . Through experience and in my opinion this is what will happen.

This is why regular servicing is very important. Carried out regularly will ensure that your car performs at the optimum level for much longer. Not all car owners can afford to take their car to the garage for Servicing and  repairing.Because of the skill and knowledge of the service mechanics. So, your local auto-centre in Halifax . Naturally, is best place to have  servicing carried out.

Levels of Car Services

Firstly, this is just a breakdown of the types of servicing . To be sure, that you may encounter at your local auto-centre. Most safety conscious drivers. Hence, will book their vehicle in for a service at least once a year. This is generally the case with most drivers that care for their cars and also care about road safety.

As a standard rule, most auto-centres that service your car have four types of services to choose from. These are (in order of the number of checks carried out):

1- engine service (oil and filter change) known as a Bronze service.

2- medium service Silver service.

3- full service Gold service.

4- full service + MOT test Platinum service.

Depending on the type of your vehicle and how much you use it, it is worth checking what is involved in each kind of these services.

Especially if you like most of us are concerned about the money situation. This is because each service has a scale of things that are carried out and it may be that you could only afford to have an engine service and not the large Gold service. In my opinion this would be better than not having your car serviced at all, and letting your car degenerate.

The most basic maintenance plan is the oil and filter change (engine service). This service changes your oil and oil filter, also checking basic safety things such as your tyres, lights and a visual check of the brakes.

car servicing Halifax

car servicing Halifax

If you use your car a lot throughout the year, you may consider booking your vehicle in for an medium car servicing Halifax, say every six months you can do this between your annual full service (gold service)

The next service is the silver service which will include somewhere in the region of 25-35 safety checks on your car, components such as brake fluid, handbrake travel, steering and suspension will be examined and reported on, if any further problems arrive.

The most comprehensive service an auto-centre offers is usually the Full Service (gold service). This is recommended by garages as an annual check-up, the gold car servicing Halifax will go through almost everything in a car using our special check list.

With well over 50 checks, a Gold Service will ensure that your car performs to optimum levels

This should last the car right after the year following your service. The gold service is often carried out with an MOT to make a platinum service.

Not only do these car servicing Halifax options act as fantastic preventative measures that will help to keep your car safe, but when you have booked your car in for a service the mechanics that carry out the work might spot things which could affect your MOT.

If small issues are found, these can be fixed before they turn into big problems that cost you far more money. Servicing a Car

Booking an MOT and car Servicing Online

Some people encounter problems when working long hours and you just cannot get to phone ? well if you live in the Halifax area or the Elland and Brighouse area, not forgetting Hebden Bridge or Sowerby Bridge, then you can now book online for your MOT and car servicing. This is an easy way to book your MOT and service.

Goodyear Tyre Leaders- Over the Years one of the Worlds Best Tyre Manufacturers

Goodyear Tyre Leaders

Goodyear Tyre Leaders Many changes over the years

Of course, over the past many years that I have been in the tyre industry. Goodyear tyres have always been at the fore front of tyre development and tyre technology. So, the company was started in the USA. Chiefly, after many years of tyre development. Goodyear Tyres were well established in the motoring world . Of course, this is when I started to take an interest in the tyre industry. Suddenly, after I became a failed mechanic (another story).Goodyear Tyre Leaders

In the beginning, I started working for a company by the name of “Tyreservices”. Which was a wholly owned subsidiary of Goodyear. It was hoped that Goodyear Tyre could run Tyreservices as a type of dealership. Replicating, the kind of tyre business that Goodyear did in the USA.

Unfortunately, this venture did not work out. Primarily, because in my opinion the British tyre market was was much smaller than the American market. So,to survive tyre retailers had to sell multi-brands to keep up with  the hot competition.

Goodyear were a premium brand

Of course, Goodyear tyre prices were kept highly inflated to try maximise profits. However, Goodyear owned a company called “Kelly Springfield Tyres”who had their own sales force. Consequently, who, operated separately from the Goodyear sales force.

Enabling branch managers like myself to sell Kelly but advertise them as cheap Goodyear tyres with free fitting . This ploy worked very well, all parties were happy. Kelly tyres were made of exactly the same rubber and produced in the same factory as Goodyear Tyre Leaders. This move to sell Kelly helped different branches to compete in their area, selling the Goodyear Car Tyres product but in the form of Kelly tyres.

We also got the chance to offer three grades of Goodyear tyres when they bought “Lee Tyres”, this became the third brand to be sold in the Goodyear name. The problem came when we entered another recession and all our sales dropped due to the lack of money from consumers (the same as it is at the moment). All the three Goodyear Tyre Leaders owned tyre companies began to argue with each other as the fight to sell tyres became tougher. The Goodyear brand became more difficult to sell . So, the sales of the cheap tyre went up. Because that’s all our customers could afford.

Goodyear tyres pay me for a cruise

We at the Huddersfield branch were doing extremely well selling Kelly tyres and I was often visited by the higher Goodyear Tyre Leaders management team to convert my sales to their products. One guy called John Evison was always trying to get the Tyreservices management to pursued me to buy their tyres, but I was a rising star in Tyreservices eyes as I had taken the Huddersfield branch into a £30,000 profit situation from a previous 5 years of losses, happy days ?. This by the way took me on a Caribbean cruise at the expense of Goodyear tyres and a great trip it was.
