All-terrain Tyres

Then, let’s have a conversation about all-terrain tyres, particularly when you’re installing them on your four-wheel-drive vehicle or one of those Land Rovers that are known for their durability. Given that the weather in the United Kingdom can be just as unpredictable as a cricket match, this is a subject that is very close to our hearts.

In the first place, let’s talk about all-terrain tyres.

These tyres are like the Swiss Army knife of tyres, don’t you think? This is the ideal solution for individuals who have a desire to engage in some off-roading activities on the weekends but are required to make a trip to the nearby shop in Halifax during the week.

They are an excellent compromise between the chunky, rough mud tyres and the smoother road tyres. They are a wonderful compromise. You could think of it as being similar to owning a pair of boots that are just as comfortable while you are walking through the town centre of Halifax as they are when you are hiking near Ogden Water.

All-terrain tyres are a perfect match for four-wheel-drive vehicles and rugged Land Rovers.

They are a perfect complement for both of these vehicles. These cars are designed to embark on exciting journeys, and if you equip them with the appropriate tyres, they can effortlessly transport you from the cobblestone streets of Pellon to the rocky moors without causing you to blink an eye.

They provide improved grip and stability on uneven ground, which is a blessing when you are facing the Yorkshire countryside or even just dealing with the hazardous roads during our famed British winters. They are a godsend.

But off-road capabilities aren’t the only thing that matters.

The adaptability of all-terrain tyres is one of the many advantages they offer. In addition, they are designed to perform well on asphalt, which means that you will have a smooth ride without the droning noise that you get from tyres that are more aggressive. You can think of it as having a pair of wellies that you can wear to the pub; it is not only functional but also does not appear out of place.

At Pellon Tyres, we have seen a good number of 4x4s and Land Rovers

And if there is one thing that we know for certain, it is that having the appropriate tyres is what makes all the difference. The peace of mind that comes with having all-terrain tyres is something that can be experienced whether you are traversing the rough trails of the Pennines or simply going on a school run.

In addition to being long-lasting, they provide excellent traction in rainy circumstances and perform admirably on the road.

Nevertheless, keep in mind that they are masters of all trades. While they are capable of doing most things, they are not as specialised as tyres that are designed specifically for off-road or road use. Additionally, if you intend to engage in some real rock climbing or mudding, you might want to consider purchasing something that is a little bit more durable.

On the other hand, if you spend most of your time driving on the highway, you could find that a highway tyre is more suitable for your needs.

In conclusion, all-terrain tyres are an excellent option for us in the United Kingdom

whether you drive a Land Rover or a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The unpredictability of our weather and the diversity of our landscape are no match for them. You should also visit a local garage, such as Pellon Tyres, whenever you have any questions or concerns.

While we are at it, we might even inform you about the most recent happenings in Halifax. We are always up for a conversation about the greatest possibilities for your motor, and we are always willing to talk about them. Keep yourself safe on those roads, and have fun making the trip!

There are many different types and makes of 4×4 and SUV vehicles on today’s roads, and so explaining which tyres to use for various vehicle makes becomes nigh impossible.

For this purpose, I am going to use the Land Rover for my explanation of all-terrain tyres.

All-terrain tyres are for the driver, who may do both on-road and off-road driving. Many of the SUV’s come with a standard summer tyre. But the type of tyre that most people associate this kind of vehicle with is a more rugged one.

This is where the all-terrain tyres come into their own. A good example that I came across recently was at an agricultural show in Halifax, where my tyre business is based. The cars are all parked in a grassy area adjacent to the showground. I suspect that you now know what I am about to say because many drivers have experienced this for themselves.

The day started out to be sunny

but in the afternoon, heavy thundery showers were peppering the Halifax area. One shower turned into a torrential deluge, sending spectators and exhibitors to the shelter of the marques. The fun came when the visitors started to drift to the car park and then home. To my surprise, most small family cars did alright, apart from a little skidding.

However, to my surprise, the cars that were suffering and getting stuck were the SUV’s .There were also some female drivers. The one I helped with was a BMW with brand new Continental summer tyres fitted. The car was useless and skidded all over the place.

All-terrain Tyres

Halifax is not what you could call a rural area. The terrain is hilly, with many small, steep, bendy lanes and “B” roads. We also have a successful Land Rover dealer in the area, and so it is a perfect scenario to fit a set of all-terrain tyres. These are the tyres you want if you are driving on a mix of road surfaces. You can go from tarmac roads straight onto dirt and farm and forest roads with high confidence of not losing traction.

The ratio of on/off road capability is most often about 60/40.

The one tyre that I would recommend based on my years of experience is the General Grabber AT. These all-terrain tyres are ideal for Land Rover owners and any other type of vehicle. The General Grabber tyres also carry the “snowflake” symbol, which means they are also ideal for bad winter weather and snow.

Fit these tyres, and you will be the person who gets to work on time, or can you pull off the grass at an agricultural show?

Range Rover Discovery Tyres in Halifax – Built for Yorkshire Roads

Yesterday we had an older Range Rover Discovery arrive at Pellon Tyre & Autocentre in Halifax, booked in for four new tyres. After a chat about driving habits and budget, the customer chose Landsail LS588 SUV tyres — a well-proven economy tyre that offers good performance without the premium price.

The tyres were fitted, everything checked over, and the Discovery drove away ready for Yorkshire roads again. Best of all, the customer left happy, knowing they’d got a safe, sensible set of tyres and still had a bit of extra money left towards Christmas.

It also got us talking, as it often does, about why the Range Rover Discovery remains such a popular vehicle across Halifax and the surrounding Yorkshire towns.

A Vehicle That Suits Yorkshire Life: Discovery fits Landsail Tyres

The Range Rover Discovery has always been well suited to life in the North. Since it first appeared back in the late 1980s, it’s earned a reputation for being tough, practical and comfortable — a combination that works perfectly on Yorkshire roads.

Around Halifax, Hebden Bridge, Ripponden, Sowerby Bridge, Elland and Brighouse, driving conditions can change quickly. One minute you’re climbing a steep hill, the next you’re navigating a tight bend or a wet stretch of road under trees. Add in winter frost, rain, and the odd snowfall on higher ground, and it’s easy to see why many drivers favour a solid SUV or 4×4.

The Discovery’s higher driving position, stable handling and strong build make it a reassuring vehicle to drive in these conditions. It’s popular with families, tradespeople, and anyone who wants a bit of extra confidence when the weather turns.

Why Tyres Matter More on a Discovery: Discovery fits Landsail Tyres

A Range Rover Discovery is heavier than most cars, and that extra weight puts more demand on the tyres. Pulling away uphill, braking on wet roads, and cornering through bends all rely heavily on good-quality tyres.

Worn or incorrect tyres can quickly affect:

  • Grip on steep Halifax hills
  • Braking distances in wet weather
  • Ride comfort and road noise
  • Overall safety

That’s why choosing the right tyres — with the correct size, load rating and speed rating — is especially important on a vehicle like this.

Driving Around Halifax and the Pennines

Local drivers know that Halifax isn’t flat. From climbing up towards Mixenden and Ogden, crossing Scammonden, or heading out into the Pennines, the roads can be demanding on both vehicle and tyres.

Good tyres make a real difference to confidence, especially when:

  • Pulling away on steep inclines
  • Driving on wet or greasy road surfaces
  • Braking downhill

Many of our customers also use their vehicles for days out or short breaks across Yorkshire. Coastal trips are especially popular once spring arrives, with places like Flamborough and Thornwick Bay being firm favourites.

Halifax to the Isle of Arran – A Customer Who Never Forgot Pellon Tyres

Every now and again something happens at the garage that reminds me why I’ve loved this trade for so long. We’re used to customers popping in from Sowerby Bridge, Elland or perhaps the odd one from Leeds who works in Halifax – but this week brought a surprise that really made my day.

Early on Monday morning, the phone rang. My manager, Debbie, answered, expecting the usual run of winter tyres and MOT bookings. Instead, the chap on the other end started by saying:

“I used to live in Halifax… about thirteen years ago… but I’m phoning you from the Isle of Arran.”

Now, the Isle of Arran isn’t exactly round the corner. It’s a beautiful Scottish island, rugged, hilly, windswept and totally different from our Yorkshire valleys. But despite being miles away, this customer remembered Pellon Tyres as the place he trusted most for honest advice and fair prices.

You can’t buy loyalty like that.

Choosing the Right Tyres for Island Life: Halifax to the Isle of Arran

He went on to explain that he now works outdoors on the island, often in fields and on rough terrain, and drives a Toyota Land Cruiser — the ideal vehicle for that kind of lifestyle. The only problem was finding the right tyres for such varied conditions.

Local prices on Arran were steep, and the choice wasn’t great. So he did what many people do: he rang his old trusted garage back in Halifax for advice.

After a proper chat with the lads in the office and going through all the options, he settled on the Toyo Open Country A/T 265/65R17—a cracking all-terrain tyre that’s perfect for the mix of fields, farm tracks and steep island roads. Not a full-blown winter tyre, but with enough bite and strength to cope with the rugged landscape.

A proper working tyre for a proper working vehicle.

And While He Was At It… Another Set for His Other Car! Halifax to the Isle of Arran

A couple of days later, he rang back again—not only did he want the Toyos for the Land Cruiser, but he also wanted a pair of Yokohama Geolandar 225/55R18 for his other car.

Why? Simple:

Even with the delivery cost, our price was cheaper than buying tyres on the island.

Times may change, electric cars may come and go, but one thing stays the same: Yorkshire folk (even the ones who’ve migrated north of Hadrian’s Wall!) never forget where they get good value for money.

A Little Bit of Halifax on a Scottish Island: Halifax to the Isle of Arran

I love stories like this because they show what proper, old-fashioned customer service can lead to. This chap hasn’t lived in Halifax for more than a decade, but he still remembered the friendly welcome, fair pricing and honest advice he got when he used us years ago.

We always say that tyres aren’t just black round things — they’re a lifeline. They keep you safe whether you’re coming down the steep cobbles of Halifax Old Town, trundling up the A629 to Keighley, or crossing a misty moor track on the Isle of Arran.

And it’s good to know that our little garage on Pellon Lane is still the place people turn to… even if they now live on a remote island surrounded by seals, cliffs and the wild Atlantic!

Ford Ranger Pickup Gets 265/60×18 General Tyres and Wheel Alignment at Pellon Tyres

At Pellon Tyres in Halifax, we love it when something a bit different rolls into the workshop. The other day, we had a cracked Ford Ranger pickup truck booked in for four new 265/60×18 General tyres and a full four-wheel alignment. A large pickup truck exudes sophistication, and the Ranger is among the top models available.

The Ford Ranger has an intriguing story here in the UK. For years, it was more of a niche vehicle – a rugged little truck that farmers, builders, and utility companies would use because they needed something tough. It wasn’t what you’d call a family car. But things changed around 2011 when Ford decided to go big with the Ranger. They completely redesigned it, giving it a chunkier, more modern look, and packed it with features you’d expect in a comfortable SUV. Suddenly, it wasn’t just a workhorse – it was a vehicle you could happily drive every day, with heated seats, air con, and all the gadgets.

265/60x18 General Grabber Tyres

That relaunch turned the Ranger into a bit of a lifestyle vehicle. 265/60×18 General Grabber Tyres

These days, you see them towing caravans to the Yorkshire coast, heading up to the Dales for a weekend of camping, or just cruising around town looking the part. The Ranger Wildtrak and Raptor models in particular are really popular with people who want something a bit different from the usual SUV. And let’s face it – they look fantastic parked outside your house!

But for a vehicle that size, tyres are everything. A pickup is heavy, especially when it’s carrying tools, bikes, or even a trailer on the back. You need tyres that can cope with weight, grip well in all conditions, and last a decent amount of time. That’s why our customer went for General Tyres.

General is a brand we trust and have recommended for years. Founded in 1915 in the USA, they have a long history of producing strong, reliable tyres, and their 4×4 range is unmatched. The most popular of their range is the General Grabber series. The Grabber AT3 is an all-terrain tyre that’s perfect for pickups, like the Ranger. It gives a great balance between on-road comfort and off-road grip. Whether you’re on the motorway, a muddy farm track, or a snow-covered lane up in the Pennines, the Grabber AT3 won’t let you down.

For customers who spend most of their time on the road, 265/60×18 General Grabber Tyres

There’s also the Grabber HTS60, a highway terrain tyre with a smoother, quieter ride and excellent wet-weather performance. Either way, General tyres are a brilliant choice for keeping big 4x4s safe and stable.

Once we fitted the new 265/60×18 tyres, we performed a full four-wheel alignment. This step is crucial for pickups and 4x4s, as their suspension geometry can easily deviate, particularly if they have been bouncing over potholes, building sites, or farm tracks. Poor alignment doesn’t just make the steering feel off; it wears out your tyres much quicker, costing you more money in the long run.

By the time we’d finished, the Ford Ranger looked fantastic with its new tyres. 265/60×18 General Grabber Tyres

The steering was nice and straight. The customer drove away happy, knowing he’d get plenty of miles out of the new set and better fuel economy thanks to the correct alignment.

So, if you drive a Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi L200, Toyota Hilux, or any other pickup or 4×4, and you’re thinking about new tyres, why not give us a call? We stock a wide range of General Grabber tyres and other quality brands to suit your needs, and we always recommend a wheel alignment to protect your investment.

Driving a pickup is all about enjoying the freedom to go anywhere – and the right tyres make sure you can do just that, safely and confidently, whatever the Yorkshire weather throws at you.

Heavy-Duty Tyres for the Ford Ranger – A Tough Choice for a Tough Truck

Last week, we were presented with a Ford Ranger that needed four brand new tyres. These big workhorses are a familiar sight on UK roads now, and it got me thinking about how important the right choice of tyres is for vehicles like these. After all, the Ford Ranger isn’t just a run-around – it’s a proper pickup that often has to cope with carrying heavy loads, towing trailers, or tackling muddy tracks and building sites.

A Short History of the Ford Ranger in the UK Ford Ranger for 4 New Tyres

The Ford Ranger has been around in one form or another since the early 1980s, though we didn’t see it here in Britain until much later. Ford originally developed the Ranger as a small pick-up for the American market, and it quickly became a best-seller over there.

It wasn’t until 1998 that the Ranger arrived officially in the UK, replacing the old Ford Courier. Straightaway, it found its place with builders, farmers, and outdoor enthusiasts who needed a vehicle that was more versatile than a van but still practical for day-to-day driving. Over the years, the Ranger has grown in size, comfort, and capability.

The real breakthrough came in 2012 when Ford launched a completely new Ranger that was designed to compete with the likes of the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, and Mitsubishi L200. Suddenly, it wasn’t just a working truck – it became a lifestyle vehicle too. With modern tech, car-like interiors, and a bold look, the Ranger appealed to everyone from tradespeople to families wanting a vehicle that could tow a caravan or a horsebox with ease.

Today, the Ford Ranger is one of the UK’s best-selling pick-ups. It’s been voted International Pick-Up of the Year more than once, and Ford even teamed up with Volkswagen recently to share the platform with the new VW Amarok. That’s how good it’s become – even rivals want a piece of the action.

Tyres That Work as Hard as the Ranger Ford Ranger for 4 New Tyres

Because of the Ranger’s versatility, tyre choice is critical. A heavy-duty pickup like this demands tyres that can handle weight, torque, and sometimes extremely tough conditions. Not all Rangers are used the same way, so the right tyre depends on the job at hand.

  1. Highway Terrain (H/T) Tyres
These tyres are great if the Ranger is primarily used for on-road driving. They’re designed for comfort, lower road noise, and excellent grip in both wet and dry conditions. Many Ranger drivers who use their trucks as everyday vehicles stick with these because they balance performance with durability.

  2. All-Terrain (A/T) Tyres
This is the go-to choice for many. All-terrain tyres combine excellent road performance with the ability to navigate gravel tracks, muddy fields, and construction sites. They usually have a stronger tread pattern than highway tyres, which means they have more grip off-road without being too noisy on tarmac.

  3. Mud-Terrain (M/T) Tyres
If the Ranger spends most of its life off-road, then mud-terrain tyres are the answer. These have aggressive tread patterns with deep blocks to dig into mud, sand, and loose ground. The trade-off is they’re noisier on the road and don’t last as long when used on tarmac, but if you’re a farmer or working on rough ground daily, they’re worth it.

  4. Load Ratings and Strength
With a truck like the Ranger, it’s not just about tread pattern – the tyre’s construction matters too. Heavy-duty tyres come with reinforced sidewalls and higher load ratings. That means they can carry the weight without overheating or wearing too quickly. Always check the load index when buying new tyres for a pickup, especially if towing or carrying heavy loads is part of the job.

The Right Fit for the Job Ford Ranger for 4 New Tyres

When this Ranger rolled into our garage, the customer wanted tyres that could handle both daily driving and occasional off-road work. We recommended a set of premium all-terrain tyres—strong enough for the tougher jobs but still comfortable and quiet for highway driving.

The Ford Ranger has grown into one of the UK’s most trusted pick-ups, and with the right set of tyres, it’ll keep working hard for years to come. Whether it’s hauling materials, towing, or just cruising the roads of Halifax, the right tyre choice makes all the difference.

Customers are still not sure which 4×4 Tyres by General to choose

This article is a follow-up to one that I did a few years ago. Owners of 4×4 vehicles who are unsure of which tyres to fit to their vehicles are one of the issues we face at Pellon Tyres.

Off-road tyres are designed for use on rough, uneven terrain, such as trails, muddy roads, and other surfaces that are not paved. They typically have a more aggressive tread pattern and are made from a more durable compound than tyres designed for use on paved roads.

Hilly areas are the best place to spot 4×4 Tyres by General vehicles.

Here in Halifax, United Kingdom, we are in a very hilly area made up of the surrounding Pennine hills. As a result, 4×4 tyres are among our best sellers. Consequently, we do sell many different brands of 4×4 tyres.

The treads on off-road tyres are designed to provide traction on a variety of surfaces, including dirt, mud, gravel, and rocks. They also have sidewalls that are stiffer to give more support and stability when driving on rough terrain. Off-road tyres are commonly used on vehicles such as trucks, SUVs, and ATVs.

Every tyre a manufacturer makes is designed with specific strengths in mind.

How well it works with these strengths depends on how it was built, what materials were used, and what technologies were used during design and testing. 4×4 tyres by definition, introduce even more variables than these into the mixing pot.

We recommend a 50/50 or 40/60 tread ratio between a standard summer tyre and a rugged off-road tyre for our area. To make it a little easier to select the right one, a good place to start is to think about what you intend to use your 4×4 for. Many people used to say the Land Rover was just a status car, while others, such as farmers, needed Land-rovers for more practical uses, so a different tyre application was needed.

If you intend to use your vehicle off-road, you must first determine how difficult the terrain will be and how much time you will spend on it. Farmers would be doing far more off-road work, necessitating a much heavier tread pattern on the tyres.

6 Best 4×4 tyres in United Kingdom (not in order of quality or choice)

  1. Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure: These tyres are designed for off-road performance and feature an aggressive tread pattern and durable construction.
  2. BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2: These tyres are specifically designed for muddy conditions and feature an aggressive tread pattern and strong sidewalls.
  3. Bridgestone Dueler A/T REVO 3: These all-terrain tyres are designed for a smooth ride on and off the road and have a long tread life.
  4. Cooper Discoverer STT Pro: These tyres are designed for off-road performance and feature a durable construction and aggressive tread pattern.
  5. Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015: These all-terrain tyres are designed for a smooth ride on and off the road and have a long tread life.
  6. Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus: These tyres are designed for a variety of off-road conditions and feature a durable construction and aggressive tread pattern.

It’s important to note that the best tyre for your 4×4 will depend on your specific needs and driving conditions. It’s always a good idea to do your own research and consider factors such as tread life, off-road performance, and road noise when choosing the right tyres for your vehicle.

Off Road Grading Index for 4×4 Tyres by General

To help our customers, we use a very good visual guide called an “off-road grading index,” or ORGI for short, and then grade all the 4×4 tyres accordingly on our stock list so that we can tell customers exactly which tyre is best for them.

The ORGI guide assigns every 4X4 Off Road tyres we feature an off-road competency rating between 1 & 10. From here, it is possible to disregard certain tyres as unsuitable and narrow the field of selection.

It works of an easy-to-understand scale from 1 to 10 depending on how tough you want your tyre to be, and is an excellent grading system. I hope this will be of help to all my customers who own 4×4 and SUV vehicles and want General 4×4 tyres.
