Peugeot Van Broken Coil Spring and Worn Wheel Bearing – Another Busy Start at Pellon Tyres

It has been another busy start to the week here at Pellon Tyre and Autocentre in Halifax, with a good mixture of the everyday mechanical problems that we see coming through our workshop doors.

One of the first jobs of the week was a Peugeot van that had developed a rather worrying rattling and banging noise.

As most experienced drivers will know, strange noises from underneath a vehicle are rarely something that should be ignored. Sometimes it can be something relatively minor, but on other occasions it can be a warning that an important suspension or running component is starting to fail.

The customer did the sensible thing and brought the van into us at Pellon Tyres for an inspection.

Our mechanic Ethan was given the job of checking the vehicle over and finding out exactly where the noises were coming from.

After getting the Peugeot van safely into the workshop and carrying out a thorough inspection, Ethan soon discovered that there wasn’t just one problem.

There were actually two separate faults.

The van had suffered a broken coil spring, while one of the wheel bearings had also become badly worn.

Either problem can create unwanted noises from underneath a vehicle, so having the two faults together certainly explained the customer’s complaints.

Peugeot vans are an extremely familiar sight on British roads.

Over the years the French manufacturer has built up a strong presence in the UK commercial vehicle market, with vans being used by everyone from builders and electricians to plumbers, delivery drivers and small independent businesses.

Peugeot actually has a very long history of producing commercial vehicles. Its early utility vehicles can be traced right back to the late 1800s, long before any of us would have recognised the modern van that we see today.

In more recent times British drivers will probably be most familiar with three main Peugeot commercial vehicle names – the Partner, Expert and Boxer.

The Partner is the smaller van of the family and is particularly popular with tradespeople who need something practical without wanting a huge vehicle.

The Expert sits in the middle and offers considerably more carrying capacity while still being manageable around towns and cities.

Then there is the Boxer, the large Peugeot van that has become a familiar sight with delivery companies and trades that need plenty of carrying space.

Peugeot’s commercial vehicle range has therefore covered just about every requirement, from a local tradesman carrying a few tools around Halifax to businesses moving much heavier loads around Yorkshire and further afield.

Vans Have a Harder Life Than Many Cars

One thing that we have learned after all our years in the garage trade is that vans can have a pretty hard life.

Many of them are working vehicles.

They can be carrying tools, equipment, building materials, and all sorts of other loads during the working week.

Then add the state of some of our roads around Halifax, Calderdale, and West Yorkshire, and suspension components certainly have their work cut out.

Anyone who drives regularly around Halifax will know exactly what I mean.

We have steep hills, twisting roads, speed humps, and, unfortunately, plenty of potholes and broken road surfaces.

Drive out towards places such as Sowerby Bridge, Elland, Brighouse, Queensbury or the surrounding Calderdale villages, and a van’s suspension can be working almost continuously.

Eventually something has to give.

A vehicle’s coil springs are an extremely important part of its suspension.

They support the weight of the vehicle while allowing the wheels and suspension to move up and down as the vehicle travels over uneven surfaces.

Every time you drive over a bump, pothole, or speed hump, the spring compresses and then expands again.

Think how many thousands—or even millions—of times this happens during the life of a vehicle.

Eventually metal fatigue can begin to take its toll.

Another big enemy of coil springs is corrosion.

Here in Yorkshire our winters can be wet, cold, and occasionally snowy. When temperatures drop, the roads are treated with salt and grit.

This is obviously necessary for road safety, especially around the steep hills of Halifax, but salty water and road grime can attack suspension components underneath a vehicle.

Coil springs are normally protected by a coating. However, once this coating becomes chipped or damaged, corrosion can start attacking the exposed metal.

Over time the spring becomes weaker.

Then one particularly nasty pothole can sometimes be enough to finish the job.

Halifax Potholes Don’t Help!

I have written many times before about potholes because we see the consequences of them regularly at Pellon Tyres.

A pothole doesn’t just damage tyres.

A heavy impact can potentially affect wheels, wheel alignment, shock absorbers, suspension arms, springs and other components.

Sometimes drivers don’t even remember hitting a particular pothole.

The damage can be cumulative.

Hundreds of smaller impacts over several years can contribute to wear, especially on a working van that spends every day travelling around our local roads.

A broken spring will often announce itself with a clunking, rattling or banging sound, particularly when travelling over uneven surfaces.

Occasionally the vehicle may also sit slightly lower on one corner.

Whatever the symptoms, it is always worth having the vehicle checked.

While inspecting the Peugeot, Ethan also discovered that one of the wheel bearings was badly worn.

Wheel bearings are another component that most drivers never really think about – until one starts making a noise.

They allow the wheels to rotate smoothly while supporting considerable loads.

Modern wheel bearings are designed to last a long time, but they certainly aren’t indestructible.

Age and mileage are obvious factors, but vehicle weight, road conditions and impacts can all contribute towards eventual wear.

Again, vans can place considerably more demands on their wheel bearings than lightly used cars.

A tradesman’s van might spend its entire working life carrying tools and equipment. Add thousands of miles travelling over Britain’s road network, and eventually the bearings can wear.

What Does a Worn Wheel Bearing Sound Like? Peugeot Van for Mechanical Repairs

One of the classic signs of a worn wheel bearing is a humming, rumbling or droning noise that becomes louder as road speed increases.

Sometimes the noise changes as the vehicle turns because the load on the bearing changes.

However, customers don’t always describe noises in exactly the same way.

One person’s “rumbling” is another person’s “grinding”, which is why we prefer to inspect the vehicle rather than trying to diagnose problems purely from a description.

That’s what garages are for!

Once we get the vehicle onto the ramp, our technicians can inspect everything properly and find the actual cause.

Two Problems Found – But Only the Necessary Work Carried Out

This Peugeot van was a good example of why a proper inspection matters.

The customer originally came in because of a rattling and banging noise.

Ethan found the broken spring but continued checking the vehicle and also discovered the worn wheel bearing.

Once the faults had been identified, the customer was informed and given one of our usual fair prices, using the best quality replacement parts that were available to us on the day.

The customer agreed to the work, and we were able to get on with the repair.

For somebody who relies on a van for their livelihood, getting it repaired properly and back on the road can be extremely important.

I have always believed in using good-quality replacement parts wherever possible.

Of course, customers want a competitive price – we all do.

However, there is little point fitting the cheapest suspension or bearing components available if they don’t provide good service afterwards.

This is especially important with working vans.

A commercial vehicle may cover many thousands of miles every year, often while carrying considerable weight.

Consequently, we always try to strike the right balance between quality and a fair price.

It’s a philosophy that has served us well since we started Pellon Tyres back in 1989.

Independent Garages Still Have an Important Role

Jobs like this also demonstrate why independent garages remain such an important part of local communities.

The customer didn’t need a complicated diagnosis or a huge main-dealer operation.

He needed somebody to listen to the problem, inspect the vehicle properly, explain what was wrong and give him a fair price for putting it right.

That’s exactly what we did.

Ethan diagnosed the broken coil spring and worn wheel bearing; we explained the situation to the customer and, after receiving permission, carried out the necessary repairs.

Simple as that.

No unnecessary work and no surprises.

Peugeot vans have been helping British tradespeople and businesses for generations, and today’s Partner, Expert and Boxer models continue that tradition.

Like every vehicle, though, they need looking after.

Our roads around Halifax and Calderdale can be particularly demanding on suspension components, especially when you combine potholes, steep hills, winter salt and the extra weight that many working vans carry.

So if your car or van suddenly develops a rattle, knock, bang, grinding or humming noise, don’t simply turn the radio up and hope that it disappears!

Sometimes these noises are the first warning of a worn or broken component.

This particular Peugeot van turned out to have both a broken coil spring and a worn wheel bearing, and fortunately the customer brought it to us before things became any worse.
