Just another reason why it is important to have your battery checked. Hence, at regular intervals such as service times. Including a check on your cars charging system. Of course a battery test is usually free of charge at your local independent garage Naturally, you can find your nearest centre online, by clicking the link.

By testing your 063 Car battery at regular intervals. So, you should avoid having a flat battery. Specially, when this always happens at perhaps a crucial time or an inconvenient place. Subsequently, your Car battery always goes flat where you don’t want it to. Perhaps, say in the supermarket car park. Particularly, when you have an appointment with the doctor. So a regular battery check should avoid all of this.

When buying a new 063 Car battery. 063 Car battery Online

Always importantly check out the specifications on the new battery that you require. Although, the part number may be the same !Then the number of amps may not be the same. For an example newer car models now have much more electrical components built into them.

Requiring much more power from the same size battery.

The 063 battery came out years ago and was sold with a capacity of 35 amps. As a result was fitted onto early Vauxhall Nova’s and Corsas as well as early “British Leyland” cars. Such as the BMC 1978 Mini that I used to ownReplacing the very common 038 battery which was very popular at that time. In brief, the 063 Car battery was made more compact. Fitting into the smaller car models of the day more easily.

However as time went on and emissions became an issue. Cars were increasingly fitted out with more electrics and emissions control computers (ECU’s) . So the amps were increased to 44 amps. Of course on on exactly the same battery casing size, the 063 Car battery.

063 car battery now up to 44 amps. 063 Car battery Online

The up to date 063 Car battery is still the most popular car battery on the market in the small to medium size car market, but the difference is in the power. The power output is now up to 44 amps almost twice the capacity of the earlier 35 amp battery. This is a very important point when buying an 063 battery! Make sure that you have ordered the right capacity of your battery.

All you have to do is to replace the battery with the exact same car battery. 063 Car battery Online

Of course the same one that you have on the car. So, do not let people kid you that they are all the same ? They are not. Modern cars now charge and dis-charge at a higher voltage. In short, it is important that you get the right battery for the job. The new higher capacity Varta 063 heavy duty 52 amp car battery is now available online .

So this post was writte by me in 2019. Going forward to 2024 this battery is still extremely popular.

How a clutch works

As the owner of an independent garage, we service and repair many makes of cars and vans. Because of this, it also depends on which main dealer garages are in your area. Therefore, if you have a Ford garage in the area, then you are very likely to have a good number of Ford cars visiting your garage. especially after the warranty period.
This also applies to my garage here in Halifax, UK. Subsequently, we repair many cars in the Peugeot, Range Rover, and Vauxhall car models. This is because when the warranty period expires, drivers prefer to bring their cars to my garage.
Halifax is a small town.

Unlike our Huddersfield neighbours, who most likely have main dealers for every make of car,. However, we are extremely thankful for the local businesses that we already have. As a result, it has kept my family fed for the past twenty-six years.

Back to the Peugeot partner van problem?

I should actually say “vans.” One particular day, we received phone calls from the owners of two separate vans; both were Peugeot Partner vans. At first, I thought that it was two calls about the same van. Nonetheless, it was discovered that the vans were different but had a similar problem?
Consequently, both drivers were male.

John had a Peugeot Partner van with a noisy clutch pedal. Peugeot Partner Van Clutch problem

As a result, the first call was from a driver in the Halifax area. John was the name of this van’s owner. John had a problem with the clutch pedal. To be more specific, he stated that the clutch pedal became squeaky and creaky around the clutch upper extents.

I asked if the van drove okay. John said, “It did, and he could still change in the early stages of the problem.” However, the problem began to get progressively worse. Particularly when the van was idling or running at low revs. John also said that the van gave out a squealing, high-pitched sound. This sent out alarm bells. Consequently, I recommended that he bring the van to us for a mechanic to examine.

Peugeot partner vans a 1.6 2003 petrol model – Peugeot Partner Van Clutch problem

When the van finally arrived, one of my mechanics diagnosed the van as having a problem with a noisy bearing. Without doubt, the high-pitched squealing sound was a sign of a clutch bearing that was on its way out.
As a result of our diagnosis, the guy left his van.

We split and stripped down the gearbox to allow us to examine the clutch. Sure enough, the clutch bearing was very black due to overheating. thus requiring replacement.
After speaking with the customer, John, we suggested that he also have a new clutch plate and cover installed. Because the old clutch did not have much life left,. John gave us permission, the job was completed, and the van was as good as new.

Second Peugeot partner vans clutch problem a diesel van

As we were repairing the first van, the second owner of a partner van called us for help. The second guy was called Ron. Ron had been doing a delivery in the Hinckley area of Leicestershire. This time, Ron knew that the problem was his clutch. On account of this, his van let out some loud squealing, and then the clutch pedal lost any play. Ron could not get any gear, and the van came to a stop at a road junction.
The first thing for me was to ask Ron if he was a member of any of the motor vehicle rescue organisations. Believe it or not, his membership in the AA had expired. Because Ron was stuck without any gear and in trouble, I promised to help him from Halifax.

Peugeot partner vans clutch problem towed back to Halifax, UK- Peugeot Partner Van Clutch problem

My first “call to port” was with the AA. for the reason that he was a past member. Thus, the AA said they would help, but it was going to cost him £420 for recovery and a year of membership. After contacting other breakdown companies, the AA was going to be the cheapest.
Once I had the facts together, I contacted Ron in Hinckley. Because he was completely stuck in a hard place, he agreed to pay the money. Consequently, the partner van was towed to Sheffield and then from Sheffield to Halifax. because the drivers can only cover so many miles.
The next day, we repaired the van and installed a new clutch assembly. Ron’s van was as good as new, but the lesson is to make sure that you are a member of one of the national or European breakdown schemes. This would have saved Ron at least £420.

Insane MOT Test Proposals

MOT Proposals Idiotic-IAAF says MOT proposals are “fraught with danger”

MOT Proposals Idiotic

MOT Proposals Idiotic

The thing I do not understand is who or what actually brought this request in the first place. Of course some lobby group from somewhere have asked for a four year gap before an MOT test can be carried out on new cars. Or is this some watered down proposal from the EU?

We all know that brakes and tyres are not going to last the four years. Hence, before they require an MOT test. At present the time is three years which is most adequate. As a result, this protest report from the IAAF highlights some of the points against the new proposals.

So bringing this post into 2020 then I believe these proposals have now been scrapped. We are now in the process of leaving the European Union. Of course this will all be looked at in the future by the UK department of transport!

Falken Winter Tyres 2024 Update

The Japanese business Sumitomo Rubber Industries, which has been a leader in the tyre industry for more than a century, introduced the first falken tyre in 1983. As a result, Falken Tyres is now the fifth-largest tyre producer in the world. Falken Tyre offers a wide variety of tyres and uses cutting-edge technology from the competitive world of professional motorsports to make sure all of their tyres are in advance of current worldwide trends.

The Falken Tyre brand stands out from more established tyre manufacturers thanks to its involvement in motorsports and high-intensity events like the Red Bull Air Race. Falken Tyre is a youthful, innovative, and enthusiastic company.

Falken Winter Tyres-Scotland a Winter tyres Haven-Falken Winter Tyres 2024 Update

It is not rocket science to know that the further north we go in the British Isles, the colder it gets. Winters have become second nature to people living in Scotland, and this is the time of year that the Scots get ready for the inclement weather that will be heading their way. I have visited this beautiful country in all the seasons of the year, and you can guarantee that if you travel in late autumn through early spring, you will encounter snow.

Scotland has recently enjoyed very good snowfalls in its mountain ranges.

You must visit their website, especially the one I am most familiar with, the “Cairngorms,” to appreciate the winter wonderland and great skiing conditions that you can enjoy there.

Apart from all your skiing equipment, there is one thing you must not forget. Before travelling to Scotland in the winter, you should install Falken winter tyres on your vehicle. Or you should have a set fitted if you live in Scotland. Even if you are visiting the lower mountain ranges of Scotland, you are advised to buy a set of skis. You could be caught out at any time during the colder weather after the late autumn frosts.

Now, let’s talk about keeping your motor running smoothly- Falken Winter Tyres 2024 Update

especially when the frost starts biting. First up, give your car battery a once-over. Pop into any decent car battery service place – they’ll usually do a quick, free check for you, no fuss. With today’s cars packed with electronics like air conditioning and fancy management systems, a robust battery is more crucial than ever.

But here’s the real game changer – Falken Winter Tyres. You know how it is around here; even a bit of rain can turn the roads slippery, never mind the snow. If your tyres are as bald as a coot, you’re asking for trouble. These Falken beauties are a must, especially for the bigger cars and SUVs. Think BMWs, Mercedes, the works.

Winter tyres are now becoming a necessity for Northern England

Motorists living in Northern England are now starting to become familiar with the same climate problems that they experience in Scotland. Anyone can now get caught out in a snowstorm during late autumn and the whole of winter.

Most of Northern England is in hilly districts, from the Pennines and peaks of Derbyshire to the North Yorkshire moors and the mountains of the Lake District. This means that motorists in these areas require better grip on their cars. Car owners need at least a good normal summer tread pattern, but what they really need is one with a lot of tread. However, this won’t help when it starts to snow, and if you don’t have Falken Winter Tyres on your car, you’ll get stuck even in flat areas.

Winter Tyres will last for about three winters-Falken Winter Tyres 2024 Update

Of course, as long as you switch back to your summer tyres in the spring,. Naturally, this service is carried out by many local tyre companies, such as Pellon Tyre Centre in Halifax, West Yorkshire. Consequently, when you buy your winter boots, they will store them for you and re-fit the summer ones. Of course, once the threat of further bad weather has passed,. Nonetheless, the first time you need them fitted, they are free. followed by a small charge for re-fitting the following spring.

Nevertheless, this has been a large success in the past three years. Moreover, we are looking forward to seeing our repeat business in the years to come. Many of our previous customers tell us about getting stuck in the snow. They were able to avoid trouble because they had chosen the correct product for their vehicle.

Lady customers, now make up about 60% of our total customer base. Of course, this has built up over the years. Of course, it is no coincidence that we have also built our social media base over the past few years.
As a result, I believe that our attempts to give our best customer service are reaping results. I am certain that our female customers are more willing to spread the word, especially on Facebook.

This short article is about one of our lady customers

and her Peugeot 206 clutch problems. Hence, the lady’s name is Susan. Susan and her family are good customers of ours.
Indeed, Susan telephoned us about six or seven months ago. In fact, she was on her holidays, somewhere in Devon or Cornwall.

Consequently, she was driving along and noticed that there was a click or knocking sound when she depressed her clutch. In order to help her, I recommended that she pull into the next safest place and call us back.

As a result, the clutch failed altogether

Luckily, just before she reached a supermarket parking lot,. Without doubt, I surmised that her clutch had gone. Susan was five or six hours away from Halifax. So I had to arrange for another garage, the Unipart Car Care Centre (UCCC), to repair her Peugeot 206 clutch.
Being a member of UCCC helps us repair our customers’ cars when travelling across the UK. especially when they are so far away. However, Susan’s car was promptly collected and repaired at a reasonable price.

To update to 2023, we are no longer members of the defunct Unipart car care centres.

Peugeot 206 Clutch

However, fast forward six months, and Susan was hearing a similar noise when pressing the clutch pedal. Hence, her car was a Peugeot 206 1.4 with a petrol engine. Because of her concern, she left the car with us so we could take a look at it.
Our first job was to strip down the clutch to check other garages’ workmanship.

This particular model has a hydraulic clutch.

However, we noticed that the clutch release bearing, looked very black and burned. This is due to the bearing overheating.
When we looked at the car more closely, we saw that it needed a new clutch release bearing. The slave and master cylinders looked OK, but we bled them out just to be sure.
after building the clutch assembly back up again.

Then we road tested the car, and everything was fine.

As a result of our being a UCCC, we did not charge the lady the full price. She was very happy with this, and I am sure that we would have gotten yet another great review on social media.

County Court Bailiff Scams-Garages Beware !

County Court Bailiff Scams

County Court Bailiff Scams

By the time this horrific scam attempt was over, I was completely exhausted. Some days I think that I am getting too old for this sort of thing, and this would be one of those days. So, it’s now the day after, and I am composed enough to write this blog post. So, to warn other garage owners and businesses about our own lucky escape,. It started after lunch with a phone call from my Halifax Autocentre manager, Debby.

Deb was a little shocked at the phone call

that she had just received. Just like any rational person would! was panicking about the situation. So, the caller stated that he was from a company of bailiffs and was about to send his staff in to recover goods to the value of an outstanding debt. just over £3000! He left Deb’s name and number to call for more information.

I proceeded to call the number immediately. I was told that it was for a debt dating back to 2017 from a company handling Google AdWords. At this stage, I won’t mention any names! But we will be pleased to help others in the event of an attempt to commit a similar fraud against them.

The website looked genuine. County Court Bailiff Scams

Somehow the scammers had the name of my wife, which was used as their original contact with the Google AdWords company. My wife is a very clever lady, and she insisted that no such deal had been struck under any circumstances. I’ll admit that I was genuinely flapping at this point and didn’t know where to turn.

However, I made another phone call to the scammer, who claimed to be from the bailiffs. So, this time, the guy was very polite and offered me a way out of the problem. Eventually, he gave me the phone number and case number of a guy professing to be a member of the Northampton County Court Bailiffs staff.

The guy was very helpful and also sounded genuine. County Court Bailiff Scams

However, things did not seem to stack up. My wife and Deb began a little digging, and they were now suspicious about the information we had been given. The court person was very polite and said that to stop the bailiffs from entering the garage premises, we could pay the court £2330, and this would then go to a local tribunal in our own  area of  Halifax.

My main concern was that he said he’d send me information on how to pay the money online, and the bailiffs would be stopped! Meanwhile, it was looking like this was a scam as my wife and Deb dug out more information.

It turned out that the scammers were using the genuine names of officials. County Court Bailiff Scams

Even the phone numbers that were used were false but appeared genuine. Also, the names they used were those of genuine court and bailiff officials. As a company, we at Pellon Autocentre have a 100% clean record and have never failed to pay anyone for anything . I think now that that could be why we were targeted. The scammers knew that we would panic and possibly pay the money over the phone.

Deb and my wife’s research, however, prevented us from falling for this very clever scam. I am writing this post the following day and have since recovered from the shock! I’m ready to see what else being in business in 2021 can throw at me and the family business. Updated 2024.

Dunlop Tyres Motorsport: in Birmingham closes, ending a long history

Dunlop Tyres Motorsport

Dunlop Tyres Motorsport
Dunlop Tyres Motorsport

Dunlop Tyres Motorsport

Dunlop tyres Motorsport division was a memorable visit for me in the 60s

This narrative of the Dunlop Motorsport tyre division’s meteoric ascent and fall is as riveting as a fresh set of tyres on a rainy road, so let’s get into it!

The Glorious Days and Lowly Origins

Dunlop, a name that conjures images of tyres everywhere, wasn’t your average tyre manufacturer, either. Time travel back to the late 1800s in Britain is where the story starts. Fort Dunlop, in Birmingham, was the site of the miracle. The Dunlop tyre empire was founded at this famous site, and boy, were they prolific tyre manufacturers!

Dunlop wasn’t merely competing; they were utterly destroying it in the motorsports world. All the way from the Isle of Man TT to the Le Mans 24 Hours, these guys were in it. Round and black tyres weren’t enough for these technological wonders; they could race through the worst terrain at dizzying speeds. The drivers had no idea what they required until they were told!

The Age of Grace-Dunlop Tyres Motorsport

Fort Dunlop stood as a monument to the engineering brilliance and pioneering spirit of the British people, more than simply a factory. During its prime, it was a beehive of creativity and activity. They were producing racing tyres that were unparalleled in quality. Also, many local families relied on the jobs it created for their daily needs.

Dunlop Motorsport’s heyday was legendary. The winning cars in every race were using their tyres. Everything they touched seemed to magically transform into gold. Why wouldn’t drivers swear by Dunlop tyres? Having a dependable barrier between you and the asphalt is essential while travelling down a track at absurd speeds.

A Reduction in

However, a melancholy section is inevitable in any good story. Problems started to arise for the once-mighty Fort Dunlop. The tyre industry was evolving into a battleground for multinational behemoths. Both prices and competition were on the rise. Our cherished tyre division quickly found itself in a precarious situation.

The Dunlop Motorsport division’s demise was gradual. Competition wasn’t the only factor; new rules for motorsport, advancements in technology, and other market forces also played a role. It’s as if all these trendy new bars are stealing customers away from your beloved watering hole.

A New Chapter Begins-Dunlop Tyres Motorsport

Eventually, the inevitable happened. Many people’s hearts broke when the Dunlop Motorsport division at Fort Dunlop shut down. Not only did a factory close its doors, but an entire period did as well. Birmingham was losing a piece of its history and a piece of British motorsport as it faded away.

However, history is something that truly endures. Remembering the thunderous engines, the aroma of burning rubber, and the jubilant throng is how Dunlop Motorsport will be remembered. It’s an inspiring tale about overcoming adversity and embracing change.

Embracing the Present while Looking Ahead

Now that I’ve finished explaining everything, I want us to pause and think about Fort Dunlop, not as a place of business or a structure, but as a representation of an era when British industry was at the forefront of motorsport. The rest is anybody’s guess. Perhaps, given the current state of affairs, a fresh chapter in the Dunlop saga will be written, culminating in a resurrection. Indeed, in the ever-changing realm of tyres, like in real life, surprises abound!

An account of the tenacity, ingenuity, and, yes, change that is the Dunlop Motorsport tyre division’s ascent and collapse. Stories like these serve as a constant reminder of the unwavering determination of the individuals responsible for these monumental undertakings. They also highlight the fact that in cities like Birmingham, history is not confined to books; it is etched into the same pavement we traverse on a daily basis.

So, the Dunlop Tyres Motorsport division always brings back great memories for me

. In the 1960s, a local racing driver called Paul Craven wanted us to obtain some Dunlop racing slicks for his racing car (i think it was F2 racing but I am not sure)

Of course. Paul was the wealthy son of a company that made building breeze blocks. Importantly, it was made out of waste from the local coal-fired power station (now demolished).

In those days, I worked for the local National Tyres in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, UK, and I was chosen to go to the  sports division in Birmingham, West Midlands. This was in pre-motorway days, and the journey would have been about four hours.

We did not have Sat-Nav then, but I finally found the giant  tyre factory. In those days, we did not ever travel far away from our small tyre depot. So I was very excited.

The guys at the factory were very helpful and showed me around the racing division, the rally tyres, and the F1 tyres, and of course, the ones that I had to collect were loaded onto my van, and off I went back north. It was a great day out.

The  factory was now becoming old and was systemically dismantled over the coming years, and the tyres were made in other parts of the world; only the racing division remained.

Falken Winter Tyres: when the snow arrives in 2024

Falken Winter Tyres

Falken Winter Tyres
Falken Winter Tyres

Falken Winter Tyres

So, in the past, it would have been simple to just call the boss and take the day off. correspondingly, or pretend to be ill. But now, in these difficult economic times, when jobs are scarce, you must get to work. Whatever the weather has in store for us,.

It is now a truth that we begin work earlier as well. As a result, they have shorter lunch breaks. In reality, I arrive at work one hour earlier. In addition, I’ll take a ten-minute pause to eat my sandwich. This is due to the fact that none of us want to miss any business. As a result, in these tough times, this also rubs off on our workers.

They, too, want to arrive at work on time. People nowadays do not wish to take sick days. because of the stress we are all under. As a result, in order to keep our businesses functioning, especially in the auto industry, we must ensure that they are not the ones who become trapped in inclement weather. As a result, you may be late or maybe miss work entirely.

Check your car battery and Falken Winter tyres.

True, the first thing to do when winter hits is to check your car’s battery. Any reputable car battery service shop will perform a complimentary battery and alternator test. Trustworthy people run the majority of businesses. As a result, if the battery is fine, they will notify you.

As a result, the entire test only takes around five minutes. As a result, an appointment is frequently not necessary. A free test will be performed so that you may just drop in at lunchtime (if you have one).

This is more significant than it was previously. because a 12-volt battery (vehicle battery) has a lot more electrics to contend with. especially on newer vehicles as opposed to older vehicles. Such amenities include air conditioning, automatic windows, and onboard electronic management systems. As a result, the battery has a lot more to deal with.

Winter Tyres Falken

The second most critical thing is to make sure your car has proper winter tyres. If your car has bald tyres, braking distances (stopping distances) are dramatically increased. Even on rainy days outside. They are completely useless in snowy situations. Nonetheless, individuals are driving around with bald tyres on their vehicles. a threat to everyone. Winter tyres: For the best results, use winter tyres.

Winter tyres are also required for SUVs and larger vehicles.

We have fitted thousands of these winter tyres in Halifax alone over the last four years. As a result, customers who have used them are now spreading the word. As a result, they told their friends and neighbours about the benefits of this fantastic product.

They are also available for high-end vehicles like BMWs and Mercedes. Winter tyres are required for all vehicles, including SUVs and people carriers, so invest in them for your own and your family’s safety.

Taking time off work due to illness or injury is simply not an option in these uncertain times, is it? No matter the weather (or, more commonly, the snow and ice), we must all persevere in order to keep our jobs.

Everyone is getting a head start and taking shorter lunch breaks.

I typically sneak in a ten-minute snack while waiting for the rest of Halifax to wake up, generally around one hour beforehand. Surely we would not want to miss out on any potential revenue? We managers aren’t the only ones taking a hit; our employees are anxious to avoid tardiness and the dreaded sick day as much as we are.

Keeping your vehicle in top shape is essential

but it becomes much more important when the frost begins to bite. Check the condition of your car battery first. Just take your vehicle to any reputable auto battery repair shop, and they will gladly do a fast and free inspection. These days, a strong battery is more important than ever because modern cars are loaded with technology like air conditioning and complex control systems.

Falken winter tyres, though, are the true revolutionary factor.

The roads here are notoriously treacherous in all weather, so you should probably just ignore the snow. Tyres that are completely flat are a certain recipe for disaster. These stunning Falken wheels are an absolute necessity, particularly for larger vehicles and SUVs. Picture luxury vehicles like BMWs and Mercedes, and so on.

Falken winter tyres have been steadily trickling onto Halifax’s streets for the last many years. The comments have been absolutely astounding; word is getting around like a chippy on a Friday! Consider purchasing a set to ensure your protection and the safety of your loved ones. Remember, we’re fighting not only for the weather but also for the survival of our livelihoods.

Hybrid Car Servicing: Pellon Autocentre in Halifax

Hybrid Car Servicing

Hybrid Car Servicing

Of course, some people think that “hybrid “cars” have an edge over conventional cars. Therefore, it is more expensive than the latter. Unlike normal cars, hybrid cars do not need much maintenance, or do they need some of their components changed?

because of the many advantages.

Thus, over conventional cars, hybrid cars have gained a lot of popularity in a very short period of time. Hybrid cars, as the name suggests. operate on a one-of-a-kind combination of a gas-powered internal combustion engine. including the clean energy of an electric motor.

While most hybrid vehicles run on gasoline, there are some hybrid car models that use alternative fuels. Hence, such fuels as diesel, ethanol, and fuel derived from plant materials.

Like standard petrol engined cars, hybrid models have different characteristics and different parts.

One of the Ford hybrid models has a special air filter. This is for the battery pack cooling system. As a result, the battery filter is located on the drivers’ side at the rear edge of the cargo area side glass. This filter should be replaced every 10,000 miles. Some models have different filter changing times, but this will be in the service manual.

The fuel engine of a hybrid car requires similar maintenance as the engine of a normal car. Depending on the type of hybrid you have, oil changes should be made every 5,000–10,000 miles. Another advantage of hybrid vehicles is their regenerative braking system.

So the brake pads in hybrids last longer than those of an ordinary car.

Because they do not wear out easily, the pads last longer and do not need changing as often as on a normal car.

Another appealing feature of the hybrid is that, unlike other electric vehicles, it has a gasoline engine. Then you do not have to plug into the wall to recharge the batteries. Because the electric motor of the hybrid car acts as a generator when the car is cruising or when brakes are applied, keep in mind that a battery will last much longer if it is never completely charged or completely drained.

Hybrid Car Servicing

Unlike normal cars, hybrid cars need less maintenance. especially on their component parts. Most car dealers offer suitable warranties on battery packs, including the emission parts of a hybrid car. Therefore, you can get the servicing done by professional mechanics at your local auto centre. so at a reasonable cost.

Thus, contrary to common belief, hybrid cars need less maintenance than your standard petrol engined model. However, due to modern design and engineering breakthroughs, all cars, whatever type they are, would require less maintenance. This seems to be great for DIY motorists. But the equipment needed to reset the computers and service and diagnostic lights is expensive.

Fortunately, for the small and medium garage sector

We do keep up with the ever-changing need for new diagnostic tools and equipment. The only grey area that I can see is the battery problem. A small lead-acid battery powers the lighting systems and other accessories on the petrol engine. Of course, this is because of the cost. A Li-On battery would be hundreds of times the price of a similar lead-acid battery. Multiply this by the number of cars produced, and you have your answer.

Hybrid Car Servicing

The lead acid that is most commonly used is the 054 part number. The main drive battery is a different animal? Some companies allow the customer to lease the battery. However, this has its drawbacks. As a result, the driver may be locked into a three-year contract. I believe the cost to be about an extra £60 to £70  a month on top of the cost of the car.

Also, the Li-On battery could be bought outright for just under the £5,000 mark.

The threat of abolishing petrol and diesel-engined cars

will only strengthen our resolve to learn and to carry on fighting for our rights to repair these vehicles. As a result, the small garage industry will learn and equip itself in order to serve the public.

Hence, in a fair and shrewd manner, by not ripping off the public. as some other sectors of the garage industry have done in the past. especially when new technology comes along.

Varta Batteries Driven BMW

Varta Batteries Driven BMW powered 1602e was BMW’s first EV, and grand-daddy to the i8. Here’s its strange story

This was a surprise to me when i read about it?

So, I knew that battery driven cars are nothing new. But have never heard of BMW getting involved, and using Varta Batteries . Of course scientists are now developing the electric cars . Driven by a different type of battery. But, BMW apparently used the only technology available! The good old lead acid battery and Varta ones to boot.

Electric cars driven by batteries are nothing new?

Consequently, many car manufacturers have tried to produce the electric cars. Going back to the 1800’s. One of the efforts came from Ferdinand Porsche, the guy who started the Porsche car company.

So, he developed an electric car known as the P1 as far back as 1898. Consequently, he also developed what could have been the first hybrid in the world a car that was powered by a gasoline engine and a battery.

Thomas Edison also thought that electric cars were going to be the future and was always trying to improve a better batter to drive cars. Edison teamed up with Henry Ford to try to create lower cost electricity. Bur it was Ford who scuppered Edison’s plans by bringing out the model T, which would run on a petrol engine and not battery driven.

The cost of the cars driven on a gas engine was half the price of a battery driven model.

The gas engine cars out sold the battery cars and this was amplified even more when the starter motor was invented and it became far easier to start a car by pressing a button, than by hand cranking the engine to start the car.

Petrol became more popular! As oil was discovered in more and more of the American States. This meant that the new roads that were been built. Of course, all across the States and were serviced by petrol filling stations . All across the country! Giving the gas powered engine an even bigger advantage to the consumers. Who were buying these more affordable cars in droves. A new freedom had arisen ! People were wanting to explore the new road networks that were opening up all over America.

Petrol shortages spark interest in  electric vehicles driven by batteries

Nothing much happened in battery development for years. Bringing me up to the time when I became interested in cars. Working as an apprentice mechanic.Of course, here in Yorkshire UK, my home county.

The 1960’s and 1970’s the world was shook by the Arab Oil Embargo (1973). Which worried the USA about importing oil. So, in 1976 they passed a law authorising the development of battery driven electric and hybrid vehicles. Specifically, nothing new here, what goes round comes round?

General motors developed an urban electric car, in 1973

So, the American Motor company developed an electric battery driven jeep. To be used by the American post office in 1975. Of course, things were starting to move . But the problem of distance traveled on one charge, was rearing its ugly head. The same old problem that we are getting in today’s Lithium-Ion battery power trains.

Interest in the electric car then slowed down. Significantly, there were no further developments to name. As a result, regarding battery powered cars. That was until the 1990’s came along and the desire for cleaner air and pollution controls, Increased the interest once again, about developing the battery driven electric car.

Governments were introducing clean air acts and implementing emission controls on the car manufacturers. Unknown to the public which includes myself, governments were throwing billions of dollars in the surge to develop a better battery that would drive the electric vehicle of the near future. Oil prices were rising after the relatively cheap price of gasoline in the 1990,s and a similar scenario to the 1970’s was now emerging.

The world needed electric cars powered by batteries again

The race was on between the huge car companies in different parts of the world. Toyota of Japan was the first car maker to make big inroads. Into the electric car and hybrid car developments. In 1997 they introduced the Prius. Which became the first mass produced hybrid car. So, a car with a petrol engine and a battery train. This to me is still the better option than the elusive all battery driven car. Toyota used a nickel metal hydride battery to power the Prius. So, as I stated earlier the gas prices were starting to rise, which made this car a very popular choice for consumers.

Honda had also produced their new hybrid in 1999

Expressly, the developments after that are another story. This article gives my readers a little insight of a period. Hence, before the development of the new technology batteries. Such as the popular Lithium-Ion batteries, that scientists are still trying to perfect to this day.
