Anti-lock Braking System

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)-Another great explanatory video about how ABS works.

Anti-lock Braking System

Anti-lock Braking System

This article is about your anti-lock braking system. Thus, ABS fitted onto your car is an additional safety feature. Hence, this is now found on many modern cars. Your cars ABS system. For this reason, is designed to help prevent your wheels from locking. Especially, during heavy braking situations, such as cornering on a wet or snowy road. Thus, your ABS will  prevent your car from skidding or Aquaplaning. Your ABS system is made up of the ABS module, and has sensors fitted on each of your wheels. As a result, these sensors detect your wheel speed.hence, this will send a message to the ABS module. This reacts by rapidly pumping the brakes when detected. Especially when the car is skidding and has lost the traction on a wet or icy road.

If your car is not fitted with an ABS system, then a lost of traction due to loss of traction. This could be caused by skidding, or aquaplaning on wet roads.  When you have to apply your brakes, then without ABS you could lose control of the car. As a result, your ABS system on your vehicle will give you plenty of warning signs when there is any problems with ABS system.

I think it is important for the driver to be aware of the warning signs. By knowing about the problems and correcting them, then you are more likely to be able to address the problem, should a problem occur. As I have said previously, ABS works by detecting individual wheel-lock and momentarily releasing the brakes on that particular wheel. Hence, by cutting out the amount of brake fluid. Which is supplied to the wheel via the master cylinder. Therefore to allow the wheel to regain traction and then carry on driving on in safety.

Tyre braking-Wet Roads

Tyre braking-Wet Roads-Another Important Safety Video from TyreSafe.org

Tyre braking-Wet Roads

Tyre braking-Wet Roads

This is another great video from Tyresafe.org. Naturally, in my opinion, Tyresafe are the number one tyre safety organisation here in the UK. Tyre testing is the only way that we can show the public about tyre safety. Especially, on wet roads with tyres that are almost bald. Tyres are track tested time and time again. Fortunately, it does sink in, with some drivers.

The results of this tyre testing is overwhelming. We see this time after time. Of course, it all depends on whether drivers actually look at these videos, or not. I suspect, though, that many drivers will indeed take a look at these type of videos. One of the big problems that have raised its ugly head in recent times, is the rise again of the part-worn tyres. This problem has arisen by the need to save money. The people that  buy these products are on the younger spectrum of our drivers.

I can understand, that young people with a tight budget, think that they are saving money. We had a young driver in the other Saturday. She had been buying part worn tyres for £20 each. Naturally, she thought she was saving money. The tyres were only lasting her a couple of weeks. For this reason, she decided to invest in new tyres. She finally realised that it was false economy and just a short-term fix to buy part worn tyres.

Tyresafe did do an article about this. You can see this on  http://www.tyresafe.org/tyre-safety/part-worn-tyres/

The film dramatically depicts the difference in braking distances between a car equipped with new tyres and another with tread depth below the legal limit of 1.6mm in wet conditions. While watching on their Smartphone, viewers can turn their heads to see all the action in front, to the side, above or even behind them, giving an immersive – and literally impactful – experience.

Brake Servicing Halifax UK-A Look into How Important It Is To You and Your Car.

Brake Servicing Halifax UK

Brake Servicing Halifax UK-We all should a regular brakes service carried out on our cars

"<yoastmark

Along with tyres, the most important thing to look after on your cars are the brakes. We should all have our brakes checked at regular intervals, either on the cars routine service schedule or a stand alone Brake Servicing Halifax UK.

Most motorists though ignore my advice and do not know that they have a problem with their brakes until they hear the dreaded grinding of metal to metal as their pads wear out and touch the metal brake discs, making the all too familiar horrible grinding noise.

One of the other problems that the motorist has is that your brakes wear out very gradually. I am talking in particular about things like brake hoses and brake cylinder rubbers. Both these items are made of a rubber based material and eventually they will be eaten away by the brake fluid. This eating away would notice by our mechanics on a routine service as the leaking of the fluid is readily detectable.

Brake Servicing Halifax UK

If the brakes including the metal pipes. Therefore, that carry the brake fluid round. Thus, are not checked out. Therefore, there is a possibility that they may leak causing brake failure. Luckily for us in the UK. We have a MOT test on an annual basis. As expected, the test does pick up many faults.

But it is a sagacious person that have their Brake Servicing Halifax UK at regular intervals. Motorists were particularly wise if they have a Disc Brakes service carried out after Winter time. Winter is the time that you will use the brakes twice as much as in Summertime, because of motoring on ice and snow. Another reason to have a brakes service is if you live in a hilly or mountainous area, apparently you will be using the brakes much more when going down steep inclines and taking sharp bends, probably using the Car Brakes twice as much as on regular flat roads such as in Norfolk.

We only use quality Unipart replacement part on our brakes servicing

Brake pads usually need changing when there is about 25% of the Car Brake Pads left on, and callipers have a system of measurements to determine how thin they are and whether or not they may need changing

We here at Pellonautocentre offer a free brake check or can carry out a brake service for £29.90. If any brake work is required, we can provide our customers with a courtesy car, or give them a lift and back.

We only use Unipart quality parts with a warranty that covers all the mainland UK.

How a clutch works

How a clutch works – internals of transmission and clutch assembly

How a clutch works

How a clutch works

This is a video showing how a slave cylinder, clutch and transmission work together to engage power from the engine and disengage power from the engine to the transmission. Filmed at the Toyota Commemorative museum of Industry and Technology near Nagoya, Japan. Clutches are what we call a “bread and butter” job. Hence, i thought that i would show a video to demonstrate the things that our technicians have to do when replacing the clutch.
We often have our customers ringing us. Consequently, they ask the question, “how can i tell if my clutch is going”. Therefore, I usually answer with the same explanation. You’ll know when the clutch is going. Because the biting point will happen with less pedal push, and the clutch will slip when the drive is under heavy load.

How a clutch works

When i car eventually arrives in the workshop. We start the car and dip the clutch pedal. Next step is to place the car into third gear. With the handbrake of, we then very slowly release the clutch. A good clutch will stall the engine.
if you carry out the same procedure with a slipping clutch. Then, the engine will probably judder, try to pull away and then the engine will stall. Sometimes, you will hear a rattle when you release the clutch pedal. This is a sign that the clutch plate will be broken up and needs replacing.
Another sign that your clutch is on the way out, is that there will be terrible smell, when the clutch pedal is released. This is a problem with death drivers. because, they cannot hear very well then they do not know that their clutch is slipping. The tell tale sign is the smell that the burning clutch plate gives off. We have one customer, who goes through a clutch a year,(good for business?).

How ABS (Anti-Lock Brakes)

How ABS (Anti-Lock Brakes) Work-A good look at this excellent video in the braking series.

How ABS (Anti-Lock Brakes)

How ABS (Anti-Lock Brakes)

The technology that we use.Hence, in ABS braking systems, is almost a hundred years old. The ABS systems were first used on aircraft. Accordingly, since the World War 2 period.
ABS was used on cars as early as the 1920’s. In my time as a garage owner in Halifax UK. I remember the first ABS systems coming out in the 1990’s. The system was developed to improve road safety. Of course, ABS also improved the cars handling. Especially, on wet roads when braking, then the ABS gives your car better control.
I always thought that the ABS system on cars, was very complicated to understand. However, the system is fairly simple to understand. If you are driving along and have to brake quickly. Then your car may go into a skid . The ABS control module sensor, picks up any slow down or a pause in the wheel turning.
Thus, it corrects the problem and helps the driver to steer out of trouble. In a normal type of skid(if there is such a thing). The cars steering control is lost, but continues in a straight line. This is also picked up by the ABS control sensor and pulses the brakes. This pulsing results in the driver being able to control the car out of the skid.

How ABS (Anti-Lock Brakes)

Most cars are equipped with a ABS control on each wheel. The car also has an ABS anti-lock control module and an electronic control unit. For normal braking the ABS system, applies the hydraulic pressure to all the four of the cars wheels. When a skid is detected, then the pressure pulses to each brake. The system is a little more complicated, but i think that this is a fair description.

A 3D video I wrote, storyboarded and directed. This video is posted elsewhere but I’m the originator of the work.

Recycling Tyres-Garden use-There are many ways to recycle tyres in the garden

Recycling Tyres

Recycling Tyres

Use tyres of the same size.

As a very keen gardener and the owner of a garage business, I am always looking for legal ways of using my old scrap. Tyres are now costing me £1 each for disposal and when you fit as many as we do in Halifax, West Yorkshire you can see that any other way of using the old ones will help the environment and also my bottom line.

Recycling Tyres

Tyres Recycling for flower tubs

There are several ways to use old ones for the garden, but this blog will be a “compost heap”.You can visit any Auto center near your location, and they will only be too willing to sort you out with the same size tyres that you will need to stack up for a compost heap.

Recycling Tyres

Recycling an old tyre for a bath for the kids

I experimented with a couple of sizes, my garden is quiet large, so I used a size 225/45/17, or you could go for 205/55/16, it all depends on your ability and state of health, but your dealer will only be too glad to give you the old tyres that you need. What I did then, was to lay down the first two one on the top of the other and then started filling them with your garden and house- hold waste,(excluding meat and animal waste). It is best using garden waste such as old veg leaves and other mature greenery, keep it organic.

If you live in Halifax, West Yorkshire Pellon Tyres will only is glad to sort you out with old tyres. Free of charge.

As the tyres fill up, you can just add another tyre on top and carry on to the desired height. When you have reached your limit you can cover the top to keep the rain out if you live in a wet part of your country or leave the top off, remember a compost heap built from old tyres must be kept moist to allow the composting to take place. The old tyres are made of the perfect material to retain the moisture you require for complete composting.

About Eric Roberts

Hi, I would like to introduce myself. I have worked in the Garage and tyre industry now for 40 years. I used to work for a couple of national tyre companies before starting my first business. I now own a company here in the UK called Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre, and I am a keen blogger about anything to do with cars and their related products that will help my business.

Stopping Your Car

Stopping Your Car-Science-ACDelco Be Certain-Why your car stops when braking.

Stopping Your Car

Stopping Your Car

Stopping Your Car- ACDelco present a science type experiment using a tyre. The guy in the video Adam Genei shows what could have with the wrong brakes fitted to your car. The tyre will swing with its own momentum. Thus, for about 26 minutes, become it finally comes to a stop.  Now, let’s relate that to your car and brakes. How much farther will it take your car to stop if you have cheap brake parts fitted? You probably don’t want to find out.

Therefore good quality brake parts are essential. here at Pellon Autocentre, in Halifax UK, we only use the best quality brake products. ACDelco are just one of the brake product makes out there in the market today. if we skimped on quality, then our reputation would be at stake. Hence, not only that but we understand how important your brakes are.

Also when you have your brakes checked out you know that we have years of trustworthiness under our belts. At Pellon we are generally always busy. For the reason, that we do a good job and our customers just keep on coming back. Consequently the brake parts that we use are of the best quality.

Stopping Your Car

Like Adam says in the video, it is important to fit the correct parts and parts that you know come from a good manufacturer. There are many of what I call fakes out there. For this reason always ask your garage about the make of the discs and pads that they are fitting. A good confident garage will have no hesitation in showing you the brand of the brake parts that they are going to fit. Only insist on the best?

By using the best, it might just give you better braking and a better stopping distance, in an emergency situation.

When you are in the market for new brakes, make sure you choose ACDelco brakes to make sure you get the stopping power you need. For more information, check out ACDelco.com or head to your nearest ACDelco Professional Service Center.

Bridgestone Air Free Tyres-Excellent for Puncture free Plant Hire vehicles.

Tokyo Motorshow unveils the new Bridgestone Air Free Tyres

Bridgestone Air Free Tyres-A brand new concept. Has appeared at the Toyota Motor  Show, Thus, a brand new tyre that does not need any air the Airless Tyre . The new tyre is made of totally different materials.Especially, to the  conventional tyres made of rubber compounds.

Bridgestone Air Free Tyres

Bridgestone Air Free Tyres-new Bridgestone concept tyre and wheel in one

For this reason, they are  made up of Thermo- plastic resins.Hence, this material is very flexible with great durability and is 100% recyclable.

The tyre (if we should call it that) will be free of punctures.Naturally, the run flat concept could be a thing of the past .

Although at this stage I am not sure. Therefore, to the extent that this product has been tested. My own theory. Is that it will be used for tripping around towns on little “green” energy saving cars. Michelin has also developed a similar concept tyres. Thus, called the Tweel as shown in the image.

Bridgestone tyres claim that the new resin that makes the tyres can be melted down and made into new tyres, therefore making the new product much less wasteful than the standard rubber tyres . Another great advantage is that the vehicle that has the tyres fitted will not have to carry a spare, the design means that the tyre can not be punctured,

another great feature by Bridgestone tyres.

Bridgestone tyres are a great innovative tyre company and I admire their attempts to make a better World.  Eric Roberts.

I think that this new design fits well into the need for change that allows this product to fit into a greener and environmental friendly World, but I don’t think it will be the end all of all our problems produced by the rubber tyre, but it is a good start, it will also put people out of work in the service industry, but we will have a cleaner Planet. Auto Air Conditioning Systems at a Glance

Auto Air Conditioning Systems at a Glance-A look at how your cars air-conditioning works

Auto Air Conditioning Systems at a Glance

Auto Air Conditioning Systems at a Glance

Many of us older drivers, will remember the days when air-conditioning, was only available on the top car brands. For this reason, i decided to put a few videos onto my blog. Naturally, most modern cars nowadays are now fitted with AC (air-conditioning). Most modern Autocentres, like Pellon Autocentre, here in Halifax. Accordingly, can now carry out repairs and re-charge many car models AC systems.

Therefore, Air Conditioning in cars came about in the 1940’s. The first ones were fairly basic. Hence moving forward to today’s vehicles, there is modern  technologies. As expected, such things as computerized automatic temperature control. Which allow you to set temperature that you want, automatically. For this reason, this has added a great deal of complexity to today’s modern vehicles air conditioning systems.

Furthermore, we now have tough environmental laws, that regulate car AC systems. Regulated things include, such things as recharging the  AC system with refrigerant. Another rule that regulates the AC system is the  evacuating and charging of the PAG oil needed by the compressor. Scientific studies have proved that there has been a damaging effect of the AC refrigerant to the Earths ozone layer.

Today’s modern garage now to have technicians. As expected, have to be certified on the use of refrigerants. Thus, can also repair your air conditioner system. As expected, we  purchased a special machine for  working and servicing on the cars with AC problems. So, as a motorist, basic knowledge of your air conditioning system is important knowledge to know. because it will give the driver more knowledge about the work that a garage has to carry out when repairing your AC. .

Modern AC or HVAC systems are composed of the following, COMPRESSOR, CONDENSER, EVAPORATOR, ORIFICE TUBE, EXPANSION VALVE, RECEIVER DRIER, or ACCUMULATOR.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems- TPMS systems will be fitted to most makes of cars in the future.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems

Tyre pressure monitoring systems will be the “Norm” for all cars

Electric Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems are fitted to many car models now. They warn the car driver when a tyre is deflating or flat. Thus, through a warning light on the cars dashboard. Check this link for further informationhttp://www.safercar.gov/Vehicle+Shoppers/Tires/Tires+Rating/TPMS

Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems

Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems; typical TPMS display

These devices are excellent and  save you money in the long run. The system ensures the driver that the tyres are correctly inflated . Thus, then you will find that they will wear much better. Therefore, many cars on our roads are driving about with ones that are very much under pressure, this causes them to wear badly and the car not to handle correctly in cornering and braking.

Also, a partly pressurised tyre is more subset able to picking up a nail or other object and causing a puncture or even a blow-out. On the other hand, yours may be over inflated causing the vehicle to roll about when travelling and also creating premature tyre wear due to the over inflation. Picked up with a Wireless Tyre Pressure Monitoring System fitted to your car.

Correctly inflated tyres.Hence, will also save you costs on your fuel bill. Thus, called “rolling resistance”. Because when your wheels are correct. Then you can save as much as 25% on your fuel bills. So any gadget such as a Tyre Pressure Monitors a tyre monitoring device is well worth it.

Tyre pressure monitoring systems can save your life

To sum this up. The system also ensures that you get better mileage out of your tyres and the vehicle uses less fuel and is, therefore, more economical to run.
